How did you prevent cauliflower ears?
🤷♂️
I think what helped me the most “level up” was not focusing on the submission. My gym is primarily young guys (23 and under) these dudes are so hungry for submissions that they give up so much on accident going for it. I find out the more patient I am the easier it is to take advantage of them. I know this strategy works well against lower belts and not effective on better players, but for now it’s my game.
Ya, that's a huge problem I also see at my gym, definitely will keep that in mind
Idk nothing about that Gi shit but the general positions are definitely relate-able. Training NoGi for 5.5 years. You're an awesome fellow Zak
Thanks bro, really appreciate it!!
The fastest way to get a blue belt in Jiu Jitsu is to order one online.
great vid, im a yellow belt who just turned 16 and have ben training all my life and I'm getting my blue belt in December, what do you think is more important consistency or skill.
For you right now, developing your style, and building off of that, you know a lot now, it's time to put it all together💪

hey Zak, what would you recommend for me to do at home because I am not able to attend class consistently due to work, travel, and family. i have been unable to get to class and when i do get to class i dont feel like i get much practice because i am getting smashed in bottom position by larger people. I'm 150 and most people i roll with are heavy weights. I do have a grapping dummy I have been using to practice judo throws but would like to know how i can use it to improve my BJJ.
tbh with you, it's kinda hard to help you, going to a class is a must, is there anyway to go to earlier classes? Like 7am, or something?
“It’s gonna take time to get your boob out.” 😂 9:20
great video
" if i started jiu jitsu all over again, I'd learn Sambo" - a Dagestani, probably
Super solid points made in this video. Awesome content. 🔥
Here's another tip/trick from a seasoned grappler: former UFC fighter and high level grappler Frank Shamrock and John Danaher (both not related), have mention how to jack your learning and evolution curve: train with all ranks, train with all belt levels. 80% of your gain will come from guys who are weaker or as good as you. As soon as you roll with better guys than you, the % drop significantly. Not my words, but Danaher. The tougher, the rougher the roll, the lesser the gain technically. Too intense will arouse your survival instinct and shut your cognitive neurologic system.
How come blue belt after 12 years? Injury or changing gyms? Not insulting you or anything, I dont care much about belts. Just curious
The Blue belt is the first belt you get promoted to in the adult system in BJJ, and to get your blue belt, you have to be 16+, and I'm almost 17, and I was in the kids belt system for 11 years before 16, and then got my blue, so I started at 4.5. It's hard to explain to people sometimes, but I hope it now makes sense to you, thanks for the question!!
@@Zak19915 Ahhh I get it, completely forgot about the kid's system. Good work man you must be one of the best blue belts in your gym!
No amount of mindset is going to beat someone who is physically larger than you are. I've been studying bjj for almost a year or so now and its a myth from the gracies that we need to stop repeating.
Well I've been studying BJJ for 12 years, and I can say it is definitely possible
A year is nothing. You still know nothing in the grand scheme of things, and have no real basis for your opinion, which frankly, is wrong. If 160lb purple belts aren't demolishing 220lb white belts at your gym, something is very wrong. I will say that size; strength and athleticism matter a lot and can certainly make up for a small skill difference, and everyone who grapples should be looking to become a better athlete. If you're good at 160lb, you'll be better at 180lb (provided it's lean muscle, and you increase your gas tank and flexibility etc accordingly)
You said “almost a year” you haven’t even trained for 1 year😂.You know nothing about the sport.

Omd. Im 17yrs old teen from Finland and started bjj like 8 months ago almost and i just saw this video. This video saved my jiu jiutsu thinking and things i need to do to learn quick and level up my game. I never thought i will see this clear video about bjj basics i have been watching many videos and none of them clicked in my head expect this one. Thank you so much and God bless you Zak and greetings from Finland.
Thanks bro, this comment warms my heart, if you got any other questions on anything, you can always go to my Instagram, and dm me there, I'll give my best advice. Again, thanks!!
Love this vid! Could you do a video about the most common “transitions” to learn, especially for beginners?
Will do my best
9:21 It’s gonna take time to get your “boob” out 😂😂😂
As soon as you said submission baiting i liked the video. It is how i won my first gold medal in bjj.
That's awesome to hear, it is indeed a great mindset to have!!
Tell me more 😮
@@216kingDavid1 pretty simple white belt stuff, i was having trouble with triangles due to my build and just learned to bait them to quickly stack and pass to the side, exactly like he shows in this vid
Very good video

Great video, Where did you find your ligament therapy plan?

@Zak19915 that's cool, do you have any recommendations on knee ones BC I have a meniscus injury due to someone ripping a heelhook in the gi when I was 2 months in .
@@bblucat_ go to my instagram and dm me, and I can give you better advice than on yt comments
As soon as I started submitting all the belts a s a white belt (including blacks) I realized how irrelevant entire belt system is. So no one shopuld get a "blue belt blues". You still suck and just keep going but you can still submit black belts too so who cares just keep going,
Ya I get that, I went against a 200lb brown belt, and did really good against him, he even admitted it himself
Black belt was probably going easy ngl
good video, nice editing and solid advice! thank you bro, i hope you get a bigger audience, you deserve it

Good video, nice structure, good info, try and get some more humour in. But I couldn’t help but notice the lips didn’t quite sync up to the words at parts in this video, try the clap technique 💙
hey dont mind me asking 12 years and you are still a blue belt??
I was in the kids system for 11 Years, and then when I turned 16, I got Blue belt, there's no blue belt in the kids system

Yooooo
Started GJJ at 40 the beginning of the year but was a former D2 wrestler that got into Wrestling because the nearest BJJ instructor was a 4 1/2 hour drive and $125 a month that my parents couldn’t afford in the 80s. Happen to move near an old school Gym And decided to make the leap. Currently 12-0 in sub only comps and I feel the obsession coming on….
Why does this remind me of the Rocky Horror Picture Show?
Second day training neck kinda feel dizzy but im going to do them 5times a week till 1st 2025 im also bulking so lets hope i get a little bigger
Interesting video. Been in BJJ a longtime (early 2000s). Got my blue in 2004, so how am I still blue today. Lot of crosstraining and moving city to city. I should quit if I go by most people's standard right ? This is where most dont get it. They focus on the outward color belt, I can now roll with an average hobbyist bjj black belt and we both are 50/50. Its what matters to me more than earning the outward different higher belt. They say its hard to earn the purple. Not exactly. I know actual blues who have brown belt skill set level, cause they've exposed their game to brown on a regular basis. As for me, I'm seasoned and know my grappling, period. Another aspect that kills people who quit: lot of students only know BJJ. Sorry but BJJ alone isnt enough to get better at BJJ. I had freestyle and greco prior to BJJ. I know guys who are blue belts and a black belt judo background. I could go on and on, BJJ is a major league grappling sport, STOP KIDDIN YOURSELF. No one will tell you that its a youngman's game. O cool, jiujitsu is for everyone, of course, thats why lot are plagued with injuries, drop out or fail miserably at getting better. Dont kid yourself, its ayoung man sport, or its build for people with a solid grappling history. The major issue with this sport is that, unlike all other grappling arts I trained, BJJ mixes all belts and all skill set levels in one room, which is what eventually kills the spirits of lower caliber hobbyists. When I was freestyle and greco, the D1 guys would never, NEVER, neverrrrrrrrrrrr, train with the D2 or D3 guys. Its a no brainor. I cannot imagine sports where high level ones mix it up with regular hobbyists, imagine the drop out rate ? Hockey. Midget AAA training with AHL pro guys ? Midget guys leave the rink eventually.
I think you should have emphasized the point that there is a difference between competition jiu-jitsu and hobbyist jiu-jitsu when you discussed injuries. A lot of us plus 30 folks can still practice jiu-jitsu safely just with setting good boundaries and knowing our limits. Overall, good video though.
can I trust you, Zak? I’ll stay committed to it as long as I can trust you. So, can I?
Just at least try the things I say in the video, you can't expect jack shit when it comes to diet, maybe some things, but remember, the main lesson is just experiment, all I give is recommendations of diet tricks that have worked for me in the past, and still work for me, but for you, there's only one way to find out, but good luck to you bro
