Reel: The Yellow Tinker
I first heard this tune played by Baltimore accordion player Billy McComiskey, which he recorded with The Irish Tradition Brendan [Mulvihill (fiddle) and Andy O'Brien (guitar, vocals)] on "The Times We've Had" for Green Linnet in 1985. This reel was a favorite of my dad's and he would either request it or express his enthusiasm when Billy would play it. It's normally in the key of G mixolydian, but I've moved it up to A to suit the whistle a bit better.

Jig: Whelan's
Просмотров 1333 месяца назад
I learned Whelan's Jig from the playing of flute player Frank Claudy. It's a subtle and beautiful tune, grounded with many E rolls. Breandán Breathnach (1912-1985) published "Whelan's Jig" in his (Ceol Rince na h'Éireann The Dance Music of Ireland, Vol. I), 1963; No. 49, p. 20. Breathnach says that the the 'Whelan' in the title is Tommy Whelan, an east Galway flute player with the old Ballinaki...
Reel: The Congress Reel
Просмотров 973 месяца назад
It is said that this reel was composed in honor of the World Eucharistic Congress in Dublin, in 1932, or was popular around that time and the name became attached. Gerdie Commane, a concertina player from the Kilnamona area, has said that it was written by accordion player Joe Mills to commemorate the Dublin Congress. A version of "The Congress Reel" was published by Breandán Breathnach (1912-1...
Jig: Lark in the Morning
Просмотров 2813 месяца назад
This four-part jig is a classic Irish traditional jig and session tune. I learned it as a child playing sessions with my dad at J. Patrick's Pub in Baltimore. Dublin uileann piper, collector, and researcher Séamus Ennis (1919-1982) claimed that "Lark in the Morning" was derived from a similar five-part jig called "The Lark's March." You can hear Ennis play "The Lark's March" on his recording "F...

Chief O'Neill's Favorite (Hornpipe)
Просмотров 5236 месяцев назад
Francis O’Neill (1848-1936) was a flute-player and music collector whose day job was police chief of the Chicago Police Department. His collections and writings on Irish music and musicians are still printed and used today. Nicholas Carolan, founder of the Irish Traditional Music Archive, authored a book about O’Neill’s life and music: A Harvest Saved. Willie Clancy’s rendition of this hornpipe...
Garrett Barry's (Jig)
Просмотров 3626 месяцев назад
Garrett Barry (1847-1899) himself was an uilleann piper who lived during the Great Famine in Ireland which some historians place between 1845-1851. Garrett was born in Inagh, County Clare during the year known as “Black ‘47,” one of the worst years of the potato famine. Disease caused Garrett to lose his sight as a young boy. Willie Clancy’s father, Gilbert Clancy (a flute player), knew Garrett...
The Holly Bush (Reel)
Просмотров 3546 месяцев назад
The reel was composed by the Cork-born accordion player Finbarr Dwyer (1946-2014). It was a popular tune in the Baltimore sessions when I was growing up and my father’s favorite. He loved mixolydian mode and how the tune alternates between D and C chords. I learned it from Seán Óg Potts’s playing on The Drones and the Chanters, Volume 2. Potts’s playing on this recording features a wealth of do...
Corney is Coming (Reel)
Просмотров 4016 месяцев назад
I’m fairly sure that I learned "Corney is Coming" from Kieran O’Hare. Willie Clancy’s playing of this reel can be heard on The Pipering of Willie Clancy Vol. 1, track 18. It’s possible that the title refers to Cornelius O’Brien (1782-1857), landowner and member of Parliament in County Clare. It's quite an interesting reel that features what's called a "modal mixture" in which sometimes the C is...
Australian Waters (Jig)

"Australian Waters" (Jig) In 1996, Kieran O’Hare loaned me his copy of The Drones and the Chanters Volume 2 (released in 1994). I learned “Australian Waters” from Seán Óg Potts’s playing on this recording. In the 1990s, the internet was in its infancy, and not everyone had an email address. Recordings from Ireland had to either be imported to specialty record shops or purchased when we traveled...
Bímis Ag Ól (Jig)

"Bímís Ag Ól" (Jig) This jig is the melody of a song whose chorus in Irish starts Agus bímis ag ól ‘s ag ól is ag ól and translates to something like “And we drink and drink and drink.” I learned this tune from The Pipering of Willie Clancy released in 1983. The full track title is bímis ag ól is ag pógadh na mban and translates to something like “Let us be drinking and kissing the women.” Will...

Best hornpipe ever - plus you played it perfectly! I live in Chicago, like the Chief did.

Nice mug ;)
;-)
Amazing, thank you! ❤
Thanks for listening!
Sweet tune! Righteous!
Thanks!
Nice playing. What kind of whistle is that?
@@greadore Thanks! It’s a Copland.
Well played Eliot!
@@harlowpinson5678 thanks, sir!
Is this named in honor of the Portland based Box player?
Breathnach says that the the 'Whelan' in the title is Tommy Whelan, an east Galway flute player with the old Ballinakill Céilí Band, and a regionally influential musician.
Sounds great, Eliot, one of my favorite jigs.
I believe I came by it through your playing (or a transcription you once made) many years ago. You always had a way of finding the good ones and passing them along. Still do.
One of my favorites too! 🙂🎶
Sounds great man, brings me back to sitting around a campfire listening to you play
Those were good times!
Tasty
It is so fun to read along in the book. I think this may be the one for my beginner hands to start. 1:12
Ah, definitely! A really compelling old jig for pipers at all levels!
My book is coming today, and I am looking for to looking at this tune!
Thanks so much for your support, Thom! Hope you enjoy it the book!
Love this tune! Learned it years ago from a Martin Hayes recording. Great on pipes too especially when played so well. ❤.
Tá sé ar fheabhas ar fad.

Go raibh míle maith agat!
I'm a simple man. I see a new video from Elio, I click then immediately hit like.
Lovely tune. I ordered your book
It's not a complicated tune, but there's lovely balance to the phrase structure in the melody. Thanks--as always--for listening! I hope you enjoy the book! 🙂
Your channel is a great source for pipe friendly tunes to learn! Nice!
So glad to be able to share this tradition with you!
@@EliotGrassoMusic Yeah! Your style is also very similar to mine, i also do a lot of double taps and those quick 'bubbly' cuts before changing the note. I got that trick from the highland pipes.
@@EliotGrassoMusic Your chanter sounds really sweet, by the way
@@hendrixplek Gotta love those double cuts!
@@hendrixplek Thank you! Kirk Lynch made it for me back in the 1990s.
Love this set! Thanks for sharing.🥰
Powerful stuff as always, Eliot!
Thank you!
Fantastic! Thank you. 💯☘️🔥🥰
Eliot, any new projected time frame for your tune book release?
I'm planning for this month--I'll announce the drop date very soon! Thanks so much for your interest!
Super bien joué !
@@Jean88Lem merci bien!
I do want to learn this, eventually. 😁
Sure thing, Sue!
Perfect pace
Very nice!
Brilliant!
Regarding your tune speed question: I clock it at 120 to 121 bpm and would say from a Ceili dance perspective it is a nice speed and would work for a well called Contra dance, but would probably be more comfortable around 112-118 bpm for a Contra dance. However if you were at a session you lads best be warned it's too fast! :-)
Haha sounds to me like the speed is just right, not that I could play those tunes that quickly. Fastest version I’ve heard of any of that set was Finbar Furey’s Bucks of Oranmore on Prince of the Pipers. It’s a wild version of the tune
❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥
Go hAlainn ar fad.
Great tune and wonderful playing!
Thanks Ray!
Always been one of my favorite hornpipes. This one, and the two "Peacock's Feathers" hornpipes (one of which I learned form yourself).
fascinating history. Great playing!
Many thanks!
Gold
Great stuff!
Thanks so much!
I remember listening to Sean Og Potts play this tune and thinking, "I've got to learn this one." Now I'm going to have to revisit it on the flute.
Yeah! Keep an ear out for all those double cuts. It’s amazing to hear him play live.
I love your videos!
Thanks so much for listening!
Eliot, do you also play the Irish Flute?
I do indeed!
@@EliotGrassoMusic I think I've seen you play 20+ years ago at York Cabins. 788

Thanks for listening, John!
Phenomenal. Adding it to my "to-learn" list.
Man thanks, Phillip!
Frickin’ Eliot. Great great great
Thanks, Isaiah!
Last year I was trying to learn this from Willie’s playing off the Gold Ring collection. It’s track 4. I only ever really learned the first tune of that set, Connaught Heifers. I should give this one another go
Ah--Connaught Heifers is a great tune, too!
Beautiful music and performance!! Like 12.
