👏👏👏👏 Excelente!!! Felicitaciones por su trabajo . saludos Desde Argentina 😉👍
How do you remove glued on panels to be cleaned and reinstalled?
The front and back panels are attached with screws and can be removed easily. The thin panels within a frame of styles and rails are generally not removed but cleaned in place. Since everything is glued with hot hide glue, it could be removed if needed with heat and water -- but that's only if it's completely broken and must be replaced.
How much does a square melodeon of this period weigh? They look like the square piano counterpart but much much lighter.
The legs remove quite easily as doe the metal lyre for the pedals. The rest of the melodeon is about 100 pounds and easy to handle with 2 people (and fits in the back of an SUV).
Wonderful ! 😍 The oldest Marchant calculator I've ever seen. The constructor plates are truly beautiful.
Thanks for the video. I'm picking up my very first melodion tomorrow. It dates back to the 1860s. It looks similar to the one in this video. 😊
I just brought home the same instrument, serial number 3696, and am now shopping around for a qualified person to restore it for me. Mine is in similar condition as yours was.
Its beautiful
Nice little video. Glad you shared. Those old brass reeds sound much warmer and similar to brass wind instruments. At least over RUclips audio.
Sir can i put this reeds in Indian harmonium . I have from 1880 working fine but i am thinking to take reed from it and put it on harmonium reeds. I would love to if it can work on harmonium before I destroy the history. Thank you
Reeds are different sizes. I don't know anything about Indian Harmoniums, but I suspect that the reeds are different.
Great restoration and wonderful played on a phantastic instrument - I like the reedorgans from Estey 😍😍😍👍👍👍
This organ has beautiful casework. Typical mellow Karn sound 😎
Did you use a lubricant on any of the metal to metal or metal to wood moving parts? My organ still has the instructions on the lid and says to “fill the oiler with sewing machine oil” but whatever the oiler is is not obvious to me. Thanks!
On the gears, I used high quality clock oil. On rubbing metal to metal surfaces I used white lithium grease. Nothing on the metal parts that follow the pins on the cob.
Wow, I wish i had this organ !😂😅😊❤
Beautiful restoration!! I have an old reed organ. It's a Cornish company organ washington nj.
What a beautiful restoration--right down to the fabric on the treadles!

What's the music your are playing? It's beautiful
It's my arrangement of "My Shepherd Will Supply My Need" (an old tune called "Resignation" by Charles Callahan)
"My Shepard will supply my need, Jehova is his name. In pastures fresh he makes me feed Besides the living stream. He brings my wandering spirit back When I forsake his ways. He leads me for his Mercy's sake Down paths of truth and grace."

That was amazing undertaking. Incredible work. Where did you source the red pressboard for the vox humana? If you don't mind my asking.

@@billooms6507 Thanks!
I'm about to start restoring a 1895 Crown. Excited and nervous about it. Where did you get that sheet music you've played at the end? I love the New World Symphony and it sounded so good on the organ.
I arrange most of the music I play on the reed organ. Each instrument is different (different split points, etc.) so I find it works best to arrange for each instrument.
@@billooms6507 good point. Thanks.
I've just come across your videos and really interested in your renovations, great work. Many years ago I had a harmonium that I stupidly threw out because it didn't play properly; I was young, ignorant, broke, and didn't have the luxury of the internet. How I wish I had kept it for restoration. Can I ask a question please? I have a 1980's piano and one of the white (plastic ivory part) keys has separated from it's wood support. Neither part is damaged and I need to glue it back on. What type of glue would you recommend to fix it? Many thanks in advance
I use fish glue diluted 50:50 with water and then clamp it overnight. Clean up any excess with a wet cloth. Other glues might also work (you can probably find other options on the internet). Contact cement makes a mess -- don't use that.
@@billooms6507 Thank you for taking the time to respond to my question. I'll see what I can sort out, and thank you for the caution regarding contact adhesives.
Well done! Beautiful work!
You gave it a new life so it can be enjoyed again!
Very cool!
What a great job! I have great affection for Mason $ Hamlin instruments. This is wonderful to see...and hear
wow, excellent job. he`s a happy reed organ now.

You have an incredible knowledge. How did you learn all of that?
Nice richt and warm sound.
You are an absolute genius. What a puzzle of parts. I would have loved to be a mouse at your workshop. So I could have watched the entire process without disturbing you. 😊
Great craftsmanship 👌🏼 Now it looks and play so beautiful
That's wonderful! How is the air being generated?
Turning the crank handle will cause two small exhausters to alternate up and down. This pulls a vacuum on the air reservoir. So it is a suction operated reed organ.
@@billooms6507 Cool! Thanks. Suddenly it becomes clear to me why you had the valve assembly on a vacuum...
The design of this organ is definitely superior to my dominion one in a piano cabinet that's much larger despite being less capable and the octave coupler going the other direction in the bass section is annoying when you cross sections since you would only be able to use a single octave with the couplers in the bass section for there to be no inconsistencies but that's something I want to change during the restoration. Ever since I got two of the three ranks tuned on mine with the violin reeds in only the tenor and treble section all I have left besides one in the bass section that goes almost a whole semitone flat after tuning which I've pulled for now, I've gone back to playing mine every day until it'a time to completely tear it apart for a full restoration.

Great work! It's wonderful to have brought this precious instrument back to its original state. And the result is magnificent. Congratulation. Greetings from Italy.
👍....Thanks for saving yet another magnificent relic of the past from possible oblivion in landfill.
👍.....Lot's of work put into saving a magnificent dinosaur of the past. Unfortunately, there aren't many like you who are willing or knowledgeable enough to tackle such a detailed and tedious job resulting in lasting and enjoyable benefits. Excellent job of restoration! Another piece of history saved from the possible landfill death. Thank you. Well done!
Do you sell the organs you restore?
Yes, I sell some of them. At present my D. W. Karn chapel organ is available, a Mason & Hamlin melodeon, and a Prince Melodeon.
Great job with the restoration. Where do you buy bellows cloth?
There is a good list of sources for materials on the Facebook Reed Organ Tech group. Look in the "Files" section for the list.
Nice restoration! Look forward to the stop by stop video, curius what a 32 ft can ad to the music 🙂
It's nice for a low "solo" (think Leonard Cohen). Also it give the ability to have one sound above the split point, and another sound below the split point.
Amazing job, do you restore reed organs for a living or hobby and may I ask what the cost was for this specific restoration?
I do this as a hobby. The direct material cost (felt, leather, bellows cloth, etc) was a bit over $500 plus the purchase price, transportation, etc.. Labor was about 4 months time (although not full time).
Many congratulations on a superb restoration. You must surely derive immense satisfaction in playing the organ. I'm not that knowledgeable about these instruments, and am trying to come to terms with the concept of a 32' stop in the treble!!!
Hey man, I just found one of these old prince melodeons at a thrift store today. It’s in seemingly good condition. Im planning on restoring it but have no idea what to do. Was wondering if I could send you pictures of it and some advice on where to start ?
A good place to start is with the Reed Organ Society (reedsoc) and look for their in-depth article on Reed Organ Repair. Also, there is a Facebook group "Reed Organ Tech" that offers a lot of help.
A lot of work, but it all paid off handsomely! Would love to hear a stop-by-stop demonstration, and particularly the Full Organ with the Baritone 32' in the treble. This model of M&H is extremely rare here in the UK, and I imagine none too common in the north America either.
I'm going to do a stop-by-stop demo of my D. W. Karn organ, and then I'll do one of this instrument. To my knowledge, this is the only Style 118K in the ROS registry. The 118K is like an 86K with the addition of the Dolce Sub Bass and the Baritone 32ft in the treble.
I would like to ask if you do reed organ restorations for clients?
I would consider it if the instrument was worth the investment. The materials are fairly costly and the it may take several months of labor.
Great work! May I ask you the title of the song played at the end of the video? Thanks
Prelude in Classic Style by Gordon Young
Thank you very much! @@billooms6507
Excellent video, Bill. Thank you. We have one of these that was handed down through the family. It was restored at one time and the bellows repaired or replaced.. it looks playable except that the rods were lost over time. Would you happen to know details regarding their length and how they attach (I'm guessing there was a pin at the bottom). Wondering if a couple of dowels cut to the right length would do the trick.
Dowels should work OK. On mine, both have metal locating pins on the bottom, and the right one has a locating pin at the top. The one on the left has the wood tapered to a point that fits into a lever. Yours may be different.
