Hydro Foils are awesome but not everything needs to be turned into a competition. Talk about boring to watch. I think I’d rather watch golf and from me that’s sayin something
Golf is great to watch..!
How about a pump cross? 4 at the same time! It was way better live!
Another great benefit of the inflatable is the ' kitty and the balloon ' factor !!!! If a shark bites your inflatable it's going to remember it for as long as you do !!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🏄🏻♂️

Hi. Thanks for this video it was so interesting. I've enjoyed all of Gunnar's kite and wing foiling videos as I was learning foiling over the last few years, studying and learning from his techniques and reviews (thank you). And then for quite a while those types of videos stopped and given what was mentioned, now I understand why. So, if Gunnar reads this or you speak with him please pass on the best wishes and say - Never stop doing it standing up! Keep pushing and developing. Regards.
@@irf888 how nice..! I just forwarded it to him..! 🤙
Tried this experiment myself, same front wing (AFS 1800), same fuselage length but 2 different stabs 245 and 160 cm2. The smaller stab is slightly faster and glides a little more but the bigger stab pumps and accelerates better. So what is more important , gliding or pumping?
Probably also depends on the turns?
@@mattonfoil Yes but the AFS 1800 already turns really well so even more is not necessary. The bigger stab was very useful when dead starting at slow speed as it was much easier to accelerate. My technique is still a little rough ...
Pumpcross must be horrible for the ones behind, pumping behind someone is very hard the first have a huge advantage. Love pumpfoil tho, amazing it becomes a competitive thing
You re absolutely right… the better the riders, the less they were bothered by trailing someone…
and Rainers wings are fast too !!!
Super friendly guy! Always enjoy meeting Gunnar when I am on Fuerte…🙂
Awesome! I agree on Parawinging ;)
It is the future!
Great Interview! Thank you!
Thank you..!!!
hmm maybe they should do weight category the lighter you are the smaller the foil you can put and the faster you will be, it's never been taken in consideration i dont know why !
Actually, the two guys who won were around 80kgs
so cool.
Cool event! BTW 2nd in the women division was Viola Lippitsch, not Nia Suardiaz 😅
Oh, sh*** Sorry Viola!!!!

@@mattonfoil Hi. So glad you answered this question, thanks. What front wing and stabiliser was Balz using? It looked huge. Regards.

@@mattonfoilneed a slightly deeper pool next year? Although shallow water improves lift, due to hydro equivalent of ground-effect, correct?
Can an average guy parawing? An average guy won't even be able to find one to purchase for six months. Yet another example of the new pre-order / vaporware culture. Obsolete before you can even get it...
In Thun, they still have 3 on stock as of right now: mountainsurf-kiteshop.ch/product/ensis-parawing-roger/ Tell them you know about it from me :)
Hi you are mentioning a camera following while you were on the rocks? Thx Olivier
Well, yeah, it doesn't follow me around (except for Michi and his cam :)) but it records the whole 360 degrees and then you can choose where it should follow to stay in frame.... does that make sense?
Looking fun with the parawing! How is the wind in Neuchatel? is it worth a visit?
Definitely..! Plus you usually know a couple of days in advance, if there s wind or not.
Determination and persistence. Respect.
Thank you!
What wind strength would you say is the sweet spot for the 3m Roger? You mentioned 20kts is too much?
I wantes to say 25-35 is too much. Michi said, the perfect wind range is 18-25 knots…
It is possible, but not comfortable
@ Great! We get those conditions about 5 times a year over here :-) So I'm not sold on the para wing yet.
that really depends on the foil and especially the board size. With a smaller board you def need 23 knots to get on foil.
@ You‘re right of course. I should have noted I‘m on a downwind board and have the 2 big ART Pro foils from axis (1600 and 1300cm2), as well as slower foils that might lift even earlier.
Nice video, but please, never, absolutely never flip the board with the foil towards you. This is an absolute no go for obvious reasons. 🤙
Thank you! Makes sense! You may have noticed that I never let go of the foil so I was always in control! Is that hiw foiling ruined your life?
Hahaha luckily not! 😝 Yes, I noticed, but it doesn’t make any sense to do it this way, just push it over away from you. Also easier to not get it tangled with the lines of the pw or a leash or something else :)
True
😂

I went from Yvonand to Grandson (Lake Neuchâtel)
which neoprene suit (5mm ?) you used?
it said 7 on their website, but I'm not sure it is true...
Nice, you're giving me hope! How about a dockstart to parawing deployment if that's a possibility at your spot? I haven't seen it done yet.
@rawham.mcl did it: instagram.com/p/DE0C2rIOCUK/ (Balz did it too (in no wind))

Great interview! But many good questions to help understand how to cross train for pump-foiling were not asked. Also, this is the most technical guy i have seen and finally one person who always measures his heart rate and surely knows his VO2 max and relationship between vo2 max , endurance and how long can one pump. But you guys did not ask him about those things either. Would be awesome to bring him back and ask questions about what and how one need to cross train to improve pumping time and distance. How to pump with lower heart rate. (He said he pumps in 140-150 range! ) how to achieve that? Does he have his own RUclips, where we can ask? Or can you bring him back for a more technical discussion on his technique etc? Thank you guys. It was still a great interview! My mind is blown by him.
Hi Dmitry I will forward him those questions and post the answers in the comments! My opinion: Vo2 max is different from person to person and their fitness level. He said that for him, the precision is key so he doesn't go over that aerob level.
Hi might jump in the comment section himself :)
Hi Dmitry, good questions. As I mentioned in the podcast, my background is Inline-Speedskating that I have done many years competitive. That means that I do a lot of endurance training (cycling, jogging, crosscountry skiing, Ice-Skating, kayaking, sup etc.) but also specific and non specific technique training. Non specific means balance training (Slackline, Surfskating on the pumptrack etc.). You see, I never focused only in one sport, I wanted to have fun in other sports too, so it`s never boring. That my HR is around 140-150 of 190max (only without wetsuit) after 1 year of pumpfoiling, is the fact, that I have this endurance background. More and more other pumpers will grow up without my background and will be able to pump long disctances too, because pumpfoiling itself is a great training too, to increase VO2 max. As I mentioned in Gael`s youtube interview last year, my heart rate or my load is more or less equal (without wetsuit) as I if I would go roadcycling with 200 watts or 32km/h, or jogging with 4:30/km. But this is not for everybody the same, because pumping technique is very, very important too, to pump with less energy as possible. To improve the technique there are many good clips on yt and instagram (gael, ludovic, gwen etc.), and very important is to go on the water very often, so you will have this better feeling how much and when to make the push (feel the water). Feel free to ask me for deeper questions.
I have the same board and I had the same experience as you with the difference that I tried the paddle il on flat water…exhausting! Well done 💪 Anyhow the Indiana downwind 7’6 is a masterpiece in my opinion..one of the best board I ever had. Good luck with the pumping race @Boot 🤙
Guys buy FD and case solved !
Yeah, the problem is that is is forbidden to use FD in Switzerland... Plus... wouldn't you want to be independent? ah, and it is super expensive..! Do you have one though? Do you use it regularly?
✋I have one. in Canada they not allowed, but who will check when 0 degrees outside , I have no choice if I not have one it will take me to reach your level forever, here it safe me lots of time and I have learned more each time I’m outside, no spoilt session…
@ true!
You guys are an inspiration. i live in sunny and warm Cyprus where most of us think twice before going out on the water when it is 15 degrees...
Haha, I prefer that too!!!
I am impressed with your determination! Keep Foiling!!!
Thank you! I‘m really enjoying the process.
nice video💪. Ps: I'm glad that I've already done the cool sh...😀😉
What kind of strike do you do
What do you mean?
@ when learning to dw sup foil and do pop ups
With the paddle? I try to stay in the front of me with the strokes and jump up to make the foil rise… but honestly, it‘s more just trying not to fall…
Thanks Matt, I'm in the same stage so really nice to see others working hard through the same issues! Just ordered a kind of parawing for a little short cut;) but paddle up still is the gold standard...
Wich parawing will you get?
Hey Matt! I definitely had WAAAY less falls, once I stopped filming for a while. But then I also wanted to document my “journey”. The struggle is / was real for sure 😅…
Haha! I‘m actually happy to hear that it‘s not only my struggle..
Great video and progress! Thank you for sharing. I think your title should be can an average foiler learn to downwind in marginal conditions because I think if you spent a few days in ideal conditions such as Hood River you would get it for sure. looking forward to your parawing video
Thank you for your kind words!
Also: your title rolls off the tongue 😂
cool video, but first mistake dont was the footstraps, was to get the board too narrow, unestable and low flotability. . this video show exact what everybody will get and never will want to do another thing, only donwiwnd supfoil....... great!!!!
Thank you! Yeah, youre right! I just went with the board I had… :)
Standing up and climbing back on your board is SOOOO exhausting at the beginning of downwinding. Good job!
Thank you..!!! Love your content! Would you be up for a Podcast episode of my show?
@@mattonfoil Yeah sure thing.
I‘ll contact you end january.!!!
How about improving the paddle technique?
Sure! Do you have any tips? I went out with @jonashiller-u9h and he gave me some tips as well. Leaning on the paddle and paddling in the front.
@@mattonfoil Maybe the video angle is not great to see what you are doing with your paddle but it looks like a) the paddle does not go far enough, b) you are using your arms instead of the core, and c) you are not falling into your paddle . To save your shoulders try to engage the core and lean into the paddle. scoop far further past teh nose. you may turn your shoulders to get the paddle further out. the reason is also because the paddle power zone is not towards your feet but in the front. a friend scoops towards the nose, using very little energy, getting the board moving with little energy.
thank you so much..! Will practice that in the flat next time. ..!
