Ableton Move Goes Metal - An Unexpected Jam
I haven't shared a new video in a while, because I'm working on something big. In the meantime, I wanted to do something different, so I made a post metal track on the Ableton Move using stock sounds. The Move does not have Amp, Cabinet or Pedal device, no multisamples for the Drum Rack either, so everything sounds a bit like General MIDI pushed through a distortion pedal, but this jam was too much fun not to share it with you!

wait, so is Move sending out gate and pitch at the same time to Lich?
Ableton Move only sends MIDI in or out, I'm using a module that converts USB MIDI In to CV/Gate.

@@helloemileYes, but not directly. Move sends MIDI. MIDI can send Note-On/Off messages with 127 values for chromatic pitch and pitch bend with a higher resolution. These are not the same as Pitch/Gate, but can be translated into that using a module.

Just wondering if these sets are all created solely with only the move device and/or recording audio/sampling into the device? Perhaps a breakdown of how you build on these sets would be a fantastic thing to watch
@@notalone4411 These are 100% presets, without any external samples. The drum is an acoustic Drum Rack, Low & Warm. Bass is Electric Bass Raw. The guitar is Guitar Lo-Fi with Saturator and a gentle Reverb. Pad is Dunkel Pad. The “trick” here is that you have to set the velocities right and that will create some human variation that makes the Move sound more human. This is cool!! My plan is to use move then to Ableton then back to push 3 for my live sets. I guess u don't have overall performance effects on the move? Say if u wanted to do a beat repeat or wash out effect like the fade to grey? Also is it possible to control fx via separate midi controller? I wonder maybe they left that out so it wounldnt contend with push 3
No performance effects or custom audio device racks at all unfortunately. These probably won’t be possible later either due to CPU constraints, but proper MIDI support is coming probably next year!
Great video. When in Ableton u can drag parts of the drum rack to a new track buts that's only In Ableton when you're happy with your move set.

Okay, can you not upload your own custom wavetable presets? The move does run wavetable, and i want my own custom wavetable presets so bad
Unfortunately not, Wavetable is not optimized for low CPU usage, so only the factory patches work currently.
This is dope. wish ableton had native support....
I think I read it somewhere that you can get it to run using Wine or proton, but I didn't want to waste an activation on that. 🐧

Have you tried mapping two controls to one rack macro? Does it work / transfer properly to move?
Exporting works as I already made several patches that work like this. I'll still need to load them onto the Move to test it out properly, but hopefully it will work just fine.

@@owlmuso Thank you! Yes, I do live improvisation couple times a year. Can’t wait until the Ableton Move gets proper MIDI support, so that I can use it as a desktop module with other gear.

I've started to play with the Note app (the Move is basically the hardware version of the app) and have found it hasn't got a sequencer? thats where the Move wins on work flow.. being able to quickly TR style sequence a beat is better and quicker than playing in then quantizing.
Totally. One thing where the Note is better than the Move (currently) is MIDI support. I can’t use my sequencers and controllers with Move at the moment.

If you set Drum Sampler as your default device for Drum Racks, dragging a sample directly on a drum rack pad should load it into Drum Sampler rather than Simpler 😉

Can’t you record volume automation and duck things manually using a knob?
Yes, that works for entire tracks. For Drum Rack pads I couldn’t find the way to automate the volume unfortunately.
Lots of ways to go around this, especially if you are stating in Live. Create multiple layered samples or better still, if you are in Live any way. Sample the tracks playing the exact effect you desire, then resample that and put the kick/bass/sidechain sample loop on a pad - job done. Still a workaround with 100% what you desire.
Thanks, that's good stuff if you don't mind sticking to loops! Sequencing the kick and bass variations is half the fun for me.

You could set another pad, with the same bass sample and outside of the choke group, and have it play the same sequence but at a lower volume. The kick will then suppress the higher volume sequence but leave the lower volume sequence playing. That would create ducking effect. Experiment with the volumes of both pads for the required result. 😀👍🏻
@@DavidDeLuge Sure, that also works! One reason why I prefer this is that velocity editing and copy-pasting notes is too tedious for long complex clips.
