Enthusiastic Steve 43rd UKFM anniversary of legal CB radio a quick contact
Hello from Enthusiastic Steve, today marks the 43rd anniversary of the legalisation of CB radio here in the UK.
CB is as big now as it was back in the 80s and it is amazing what old equipment is still in use some 40 plus years later, all helping to keep the hobby alive.
I use my Wagner Homebase, quite a rare radio nowadays but fully working using a Pama microphone. I was fortunate as I turned the radio on 011Finland was calling in from Finland just outside Helsinki and we made a contact. a great way to start this anniversary day.
All the best Enthusiastic Steve

Hello from Enthusiastic Steve: Anyone who has used a CB radio from back in the 80's may recall this unusual and some say iconic microphone. I must have missed something. I got nothing out of this video.
Great video, very informative. I like the way you tested the different methods, and sending and receiving from different distances was really nice. And I'm sure it was a pain in the ass to edit this video as well, so good job. I don't care how old this video is thank you 👍🏽.
Thank you regards Steve
Practical mods Steve 👍
The K-40 & Sirio hands down they were even, for the money the K-40 all day long especially because of the build quality of the K-40 over the Sirio..
I have an A-99 with a 102" steel whip on the top element. I had to cut about 8-10"s off the top of the whip to get a flat SWR on 11 meters. It's a 1:2 on channel 1 and flat on Channel 40 to channel 80 on 27-Mhz.. Channel 20 is flat until you run like 200-watts into the antenna then it goes up to 1:2 match.. The steel whip seems to aid in TX and the ground plane kit seems to give the antenna better ears..
The A99 os a solid performer, some people add firestick 1/4 to the top, i believe it makes the antenna a 5/8th wave giving good low rf take off 👍
There is NO WAY that the coil in the Stryker mobile antenna is going to handle 10,000 watts on any key down lasting more than a few seconds! LOL That's a joke and an outright LIE! The signals are the same but the audio level on the Stryker is a bit lower in volume. A bit harder to hear the Stryker audio.. Dude, you did not mention the audio levels between the both?
@@johndyson4109 advertisers, you are right it would fry!!!!
There’s a current sensing circuit inside that battery pack that can be modified so that the logic can be tricked into keeping the output on.
thought a bloke called Jim made it lol
Mine came with a 12v Cig lighter socket so I can plug any 12v item in, I used one to run a mobile radio as a base for a week, charging when the radio wasn't needed.
I also after watching the Fred in the Shed and Stephen Legg videos I ordered a CRT SS 9900 radio. I ordered a second one after I had my first CRT SS 9900. There are still CB radio resellers stock that have them. But you need to be quick because nowadays the stocks are depleted because of the new Anytone AT 6666 Pro and Radioddity QT80.
Hey @StephenLegg İ have read the McKinley has a modulation problem. They say that the modulation is too low! Did you have that problem?
Not noticable, you can always boost levels with a power mic if you find it too low. The real problem is those who use converted amateur radios fo cb often set deviation wider. Thus a normal cb can sound a little quiet. A cb to cb the McKinley should sound great. Regards Steve
What about an illuminating rf sensing fairy for the top for fun ,😂...nice one steve 👍
@@cbrmac soon be that time to get the lights out again lol.
Interesting how the Duel band antenna works as not exactly on second harmonics...now a commercial mobile antenna would be something interesting 👍
@@cbrmac been saying to manufacturers that a proper white stick collinear with real gain would be good for the radio community but so far none have materialised.
@EnthusiastSteveM6WVV it would solve my 2+4 installation in my 4x4 .... maybe a project for you ? ... maybe....2 bananas 🤣🤣 👍
At the distance you were covering there will be little difference in signal received at the base unit you need to create more distance it is then the A-10 goes to work over the K40. An antenna I found to be better than the A-10 and K40 is the Sirio Bull Trucker 3000 mag mount at 50 miles the Sirio out-performs A-10 not by a great amount but still better. at 50 miles the K40 could not be heard. I have had my K40 since the 80's and it is still ready to be used I did have to replace the coax once using a higher quality cable. Currently I have two Trucks one car and an RV but have over 50 antennas to choose from. Someone here has been begging me to get rid of them. Same person says I have too many radios and guns as well. That person may be right but I'm not getting rid of anything lol.
@@rogerhancock8732 you certainly have a lot of antennas!!!!! You can never have too many. In the USA you have far more antenna designs than here in the UK. I use to like the ones where the base coil was like a snake, shame they never sold those here. All the best, and thank you for your comments, stay safe, enjoy the radios. Regards Steve
@@EnthusiastSteveM6WVV Thanks Steve. I have been acquiring these antennas since 1969 I actually have my father's first antenna and the first one I bought. I do not remember the name and model of my fathers, as for mine it was a clip on the rain gutter style hustler antenna. few weeks later it was replaced with a trunk lip mounted Hustler that was twice as tall don't have that one anymore. Right now I am traveling in my RV and have 7 antennas with me including a base/home model Sirio Gain Master 1/2 wave.

wow a wagner once regarded as one of the worse piles of crap to bear a uk27/81 badge! impressive i have only ever seen one in the metal and it was indeed (at the time) utterly hopeless in the crowded channels of the west midlands.
Yes most of the ukfm radios found it hard to deal with adjacent stations, but they work surprisingly well now fewer people on the air. 👍
@@EnthusiastSteveM6WVValways was a big issue back in late 70s channel rejection on many radios was terrible... nothing much to reject now Steve 😕
How do CBers make up their callsigns? Is there a convention as to how they're put together? It's a long time since I was on the air as "Shock Wave"!
Some get assigned by clubs. Some people make up their own. I find it a bit pretentious tbh….i still use my handle and I wish more people did
Its an unlicensed band so just call yourself what you like, my handle in the 70s 80s was Bigfoot, still use it from time to time, also a member of the local Yankee Foxtrot group and International Charlie Tango group, 26CT2064 the 26 prefix indicates UK origin, helpful when dx ing. Just enjoy the hobby and enjoy getting on air.
The only "structure" for CB callsigns tends to be <country><made up or club acronym> <serial number> the country codes are derived from the original "Alfa Tango" (italian CB club) prefixes - hence italy = 01. for more info on the <country> google "CB Divisions"

hi steve, ive been messing about with an sdr for a few weeks and loving it, bit of a steep learning curve for me, but just a quick question please, i been given a uniden bearcat scanner 125xlt, and its got no freqs in, thinking about doing a full freq search start freq will be 110.000 mhz right thru to 170.000 mhz, will get me all civillian aircraft mill freq cb radio mountain rescue and so on forgot to say that im new to scanners and sdr stuff thanks
@@magnu4205 search a band at a time. 118 to 136 for aircraft. That should give a good start. Keep going around and eventually you will find all the active channels. Use the LO button to temp lockout unwanted signals as it finds them to continue searching. This resets once the radio is turned off. Search ham bands for local activity also. I still find new channels local to me, you never know what you will hear. Happy hunting. Regards Steve

@@EnthusiastSteveM6WVV Hi , yeah i seen the vid when you put it out,, coz i wanted a K40, but if in dought, take a good mans word, thanks. steve.
Hang on, you are comparing a horizontal loop in your garden with a small mobile antenna on your car. Not sure this is a good comparison as it will depend upon propagation conditions and receive antenna conditions. Different transceivers without comparing what they are putting out as in power envelope and modulation, different feeders, different connectors (as in quality of construction and fitments) Way too many variables for this to be a valid test.
@@davewood4604 not really comparing the 2 but just trying to say you don't need to have a big antenna, some people do not have the space etc to get on and use the hf bands. Some people are put off as they belive without a larger antenna operating on hf is not possible. I just wanted to show a smaller more basic antenna can work and hopefully encourage those who don't think they can do hf to give it a try. Thank for your comments regards Steve

12:16 20W at 12V is 1.66A, and that's peak, rather than average on SSB
You are assuming 100% efficiency, the PSU/Radio/PA will be about 50% efficient It will draw about 3.5~3.8A

Yes, they are not a good connector above 3A or so. It would be better to connect to the jump pack output with an SB50. You could run a 100W rig then.
Good Video Steve

Enjoyed your review Steve ...liked to see the old radios ..I used to have the York 863 and the stalker 9 lol battery cut off ..just run a very small fan to add a bit of a load ? what was the cut off voltage on the battery? Just wondering has anyone tried fitting a SDR dongle directly to the antenna outside and running a USB cable into the house, would that help
Hi Steve, great video answered a lot questions for me being new to sdr and any other receiver actually, what coax would you recomend for RTL dongle on sdr console, i have been looking at M & P ultraflex 7 together with a discone HF antenna
With coax get the best you can afford, keep cable runs as shory as possible, water tight with tape all ends. Both you mentioned are good coax cables. At hf and vhf most coax types will work but when you get up into uhf better coax makes all the difference. Low loss and flexibil coax works best. Get set up and enjoy, regards Steve
