The debate, in 1967, had been proposed months earlier against a different professor who became unavailable on the day of the debate. The organizers scrambled to find any professor who would debate L...

Fifth Gear - Ferrari Enzo vs McLaren F1
One of the earliest videos on this platform that got me into cars, I was just around 7 to 8 years old at the time
I watched this video as a kid so many times, I am 28 years old now. Still love this video❤️
The recently published novel, Yonders, Illinois, dedicates a chapter to the Manteno State Hospital for the Insane, Lettvin was a psychiatrist there during a period when many lobotomies were performed. Knowing that and many terrible stories about that bedlam makes me see this debate as somewhat ironic.
MIT steering "non-essentials" in 2024, same message "drop out" be happier than ever: ruclips.net/video/25LUF8GmbFU/видео.html
Although I can imagine this comment not being understood. Jerry Lettvin is a profoundly sick man, just in the societal acceptable sickness that has passed as normality. I notice this in part in his declaration not to attack, yet laid out a litany of insults, such as when he insulted Leary's artistic choice in a manner reminiscent of the backwards insulting of a passive aggressive parent. His waking around and literal taking down to Leary while also turning his back on physically when making his harsher statements shows total disrespect. The use of dramatic rhetorical device, although achieving eristic success, did not advance truth in this debate at all. And with 15 minutes to prepare for this debate, its not a prepared strategy to achieve destruction, it's his most natural method of approaching argument! I can only imagine how he treats his students when they're disagreeable to him. Probably not well and conductive of the real enterprise of scientific thinking, the proposing and testing of a hypothesis, and the disproving of hypothesis and theory that advances a field. To be this unconscious is sick, while Leary proposes self-exploration with a catalyst of consciousness. The risk is clearly not the neurological, neither knew certainly, but with exposing the robotic and insane sickness of the unconscious society.
Is this voiced by AI? Sounds like it, but this video was uploaded 11 years ago.
Nope. Listen to other vids of DF reading. He always sounded like this.
The real reason these kids should be dropping out of MIT in '67 is that the place was a killing machine for the military.

... DFW's so incredibly intelligent but also incredibly cynical. That begs the question: can you be intelligent without being cynical? Can cynicism be ... just a phase, like emo?

Lettvin was filling in last minute for another professor, and took part in the debate with zero preparation. He was an utter genius, and a wonderful, funny, and empathetic human.
Now; in the future, pshycedelic drugs are one of the most important tools to improve your mind. If you have not expanded your counciousness with LSD yet, I recommend you do.
Timothy Leary was such a revolting individual who lead so many youngsters astray with his absolute nonsense!
Cambridge water does not come from Boston.
I was there sitting in the 2nd row. An historic debate about the pros and cons of LSD!
Make up your mind what row you were in.
Lettvin is still right.
12 step program.
I was sitting in the 3rd row for the MIT debate, now a part of counterculture history. It's embedded into my memory.
Apparently not so well embedded, as you say 2cd row just down below.

Did you get an opportunity to speak with Dr. Leary?
The Chelsea Standard (newspaper from Chelsea, MI), 23 Nov 1967: "N.E.T. Journal” stages a psychedelic showdown, complete with whirling lights and fantastic forms when Timothy Leary and Jerome Lettvin debate the effects of LSD on “LSD: Lettvin vs. Leary,'' Sunday, Nov. 26, 4:30 p.m. and Wednesday, Nov. 29, at 12 noon. Leary, former Harvard psychology professor and LSD prophet, urges the younger generation to "drop out all the way,” while Jerome Lettvin, MIT physiology professor, attacks Leary as “a vicious tool of the devil." Leary dramatizes his presentation through a combination of films and slides which render an observer's view of a “trip” and suggest the feeling of an actual LSD experience.
Wow!
friend of bill w
Close minded ignoramus vs. fried CIA gatekeeper. I like how Leary keeps calling it a sacrament. A sacrament is a monthly thing, or a few times a year, not four times a week.
It`s Jerome Lettvin
There have now been clinical trials showing that the '3 month hangover' story is absolute bs. This is such a blatant falsehood that I don't know how much credit I can give Lettvin for anything else he says. I do give him credit however for being quite the bully.
ummmm Leary is right about everything????? 🧐🧐🧐🧐🧐

Great debate, thanks 🙏
I appreciate what they both have to say here.

Thank you. 20 years+ ago I was listening to this on a cassette tape I got from the library. I recorded it and listened to it along with Terrence probably 100 times at least. Never thought I'd see the video. So many memories. Thanks again.
Letwin is a burnout hippie the other guy is a walking suicide commercial fuck off with this bullshit. Bunch of pretencious ass - lickers drop some acid and talk to yourself like a real man shut up. Safe travels ✈️✈️❤️
I think this is his weakest essay honestly.
Timothy Leary participated in a number of these debates at college campuses at around this time. I attended one at Penn State's Schwab Auditorium while I was a kid in high school.
Leary is so fried in this lecture he is nearly incoherent.
Which made him easy pickin's for Dr. Lettvin who, while a bit heavy-handed, demonstrated the lack of cogency in Dr. Leary's presentation.
McLaren F1 , THAT is a real car !! 🥰
This got recommended to me on the 11th
Alrighty
Dam this video is older than me
Before criticizing Lettvin like a dumbfuck, do the 'hard work' and look up his scientific career and research. The guy studied the brain and nervous system all his life. Came up for the debate without any prep mid-experiment from his lab. Wasted his time debating wannabes like Leary possibly to protect some impressionable young minds from horseshit.
This friend of mine tried +Aya for the first time 4 years ago, and almost lost his mind. Drugs do suck, sorry. Where´s the insight, the awareness?... Sheesh...
Paul has low IQ. Got it.
Ok, yeah that happens to a very small minority. Usually there are giant red flags that are totally ignored first.
It amazing how wrong they both actually are. Seems to me this represents both Extremes know then and now. Both equally credible facts that hold till this day.
"Tyranny Of Words" - Stuart Chase. Learn how to translate words of higher level of abstraction. Every high level of abstraction word translates as "Blah" which is not making fun of it but a semantic blank.
What is wrong ? :)
Beautiful contrast. Not without comparison to it being in black grey and white. The combining of these two people are the future. Not being a full blown hippy and not being a full blown white collar. Dialectic is important.

Terrence once said, instead of debating whether DMT is a useful tool or not for several years, take the time and experience it for several minutes.

Comparing LSD to lobotomy must be one of the most succinct and effective ways to communicate complete ignorance of the topic.
