The New York Power Authority (NYPA) and New York State Canal Corporation today announced the launch of the On the Canals Accessibility Education Program. This new initiative will work to establish inclusive recreational opportunities across the 524-mile New York State Canal system through a collaboration with Rochester Accessible Adventures.

Good on you for cleaning this up. It's a shame that people dump trash anywhere. I mean sometimes trash blows away out of a too full trash can or something, but a tire does not do that. Someone threw it there.

We have all sinned and fallen short of Gods glory. Don’t think you have? Let’s check with a few of the Ten Commandments! Have you ever stolen? (Even if it’s something really small or not worth much) Have you ever lied? Or have you ever looked with lust? Now, have you ever taken the Lords name in vain? If you’ve ever done any of those things, you would be either a liar, a thief, an adulterer,(for looking with lust), or a blasphemer(for taking Gods name in vain) or maybe even all of them. Therefore we have all sinned against God and therefore deserve death. (Romans 3:23 & 6:23)That’s why ~2000 years ago a Savior was sent, Jesus Christ to die for the sins of the world and then rose 3 days later. Through His sacrifice he paid the fine for our sins, and now we can be made new by accepting His free gift of Salvation. In order to accept this free gift, we must first repent. This is a change of mind about sin (from an embrace of sin to rejection of sin) and a turning to God. Once you repent, you can then turn to FAITH in the Savior.A person who has truly repented of their sin and exercised faith in Christ will give evidence of a changed life. Therefore, as a result of TRUE Salvation you’ll then produce good works and the fruit of Salvation. You aren’t saved by doing good works.But you can then produce good works once you are saved.
Where are the dry-docks located?
Google maps is your friend. (Hint: Some sections of the modern canal are labelled "Pools Brook" ... It is an artificial waterway) The Erie canal uses the Mohawk River, Pools Brook, Oneida Lake. The western portion of the modern canal uses a manmade waterway from Lock #23 (Brewerton, NY) westward through Buffalo. Some of Pools Brook was decomissioned after it was built. But the rest remains in use. There were actually three canals: " *Clinton's Ditch* " (original canal ... b. 1817 --> 1825) Man-made and some natural water features. "Enlarged"/"Improved" Erie canal .... Now called the " *Old Erie Canal* " (b. circa 1835 --> 1860's with upgrades as late as 1900) ... Totally man-made with natural features (and sometimes the original canal's channels) used as feeders for the (now) "Old Erie Canal" " *Barge Canal* " (b. 1903/05 -->1918) Combination of natural and man-made features. (It was managed by the Barge Canal Corporation until 2013. This was built for coal and (later) diesel fueled canal boats. These boats were already in use within the much smaller "Old Erie Canal" (Times change .... Right?) In *2014* the state renamed the canal corporation to *New York State Canal Corporation* , and returned all of the existing (in use) canals in the state to their original names. (" *Erie Canal* ", " *Champlain Canal* " , " *Oswego Canal* " and " *Cayuga-Seneca Canal* ") In addition the state created the " *Empire State Trail* "[1] for hiking and biking that runs along ghe existing canal AND the " *Canalway Erie-Canal Trail* "[2] that runs along the decomissioned Old Erie Canal (and what remains of Clinton's Ditch ... original canal) both trails intersect in some areas. There are rest and picnic areas along both canal trails. The Canalway Trail goes through villages and there are a series of museums along the way. Canals that were abandoned, that at one time joined the Erie Canal, also exist in some places and have historic markers as various places along the roads that run near where the canals existed. These were (to name the larger ones): *Black River Canal* (Rome,NY to Carthage, NY near Lake Ontario) *Chenago Canal* (Binghamton, NY to Utica, NY on the Erie Canal) and the *Genesee Valley Canal* (Rochester to Olean, --"with a branch from Mount Morris paralleling Canaseraga Creek to Dansville." - (Wiki) This is part of the " *Genesee Valley Greenway* "[3] and includes Letchworth State Park (Note: The trail south of Letchworth State Park is VERY strenuous -- Not for the casual walker!) There are several You Tubers that have uploaded portions of their trips through the canals as well as other You Tubers who have recorded their trips to decomissioned locks and portions of the now-abandoned Clinton's Ditch and Old Erie Canal (At times the two ran parallel to each other with Clinton's ditch being filled in later (unless it was used as a feeder or a natrual creek had been widened for Clinton's Ditch (the original canal was not very deep or wide) Wikipedia has articles (basic information) about all of the highlighted names in this reply. The state also has canal museums (I know of Lockport and Syracuse) The local counties, municipalities, also have websites that mention the call and give information about the hours of operation. Even if you are not able to travel on the canal, hike or bike the trails it is possible to drive to the various points along most of the trails and just take a short walk, see a lock etc. [Note the number of locks changed over the years I think Clinton's Ditch had 84 locks, Old Erie Canal had 60-something (63?) locks and the modern Erie has 35 locks] (with a federal-run lock on both terminals of the Erie Canal). Some of the decomissioned locks are on Google maps with a parking area for vistors. It is amazing what people did with just human and animal muscle power to dig and to man winches to build the canal. How wold this be constructed? directly on the ice or possibly rafting sections incase of ice melt? I remember living a block away from the canal in Fairport, sleigh dow the outer side of the bank and iceskating on the canal. but you had to be careful during periodic melting and freezing. this was back in the 60's.
I just biked this section today! The Canalway Trail is a fantastic resource and a blessing to all New Yorkers.

When transiting a lock is it customary to stop your engine or keep it running when the gates are closed?
Canals are great places to learn how to paddle a canoe or kayak, or even an inflatable boat, with no current to fight and not as much wind as on a lake. Great place to train your kids!
Unfortunately, all of these expensive "fantasy" projects will not ensure canal popularity or longevity more than a broader infrastructure improvement could achieve. Have any of you folks ever actually traveled the system and witnessed the failing structures , long overdue rehabs , overgrown embankments , and countless other baseline shortcomings that exist along this aged system? The supposed safety first mindset of the power authority , you might think, should take these basic aspects into account before creating more frivolous attractions that will only become more of a burden to maintain. One hates to rain on the parade but the canal system has been surviving on a minimalist , " band-aids until the next guy must deal with it " approach for too many decades. Create jobs and polish the gem we have , not create more eventual eyesores that lack staff and equipment to upkeep. P.S. , Long live the NYS Canal System. And a hearty thanks to all of the men and women who work so hard to maintain it.

I live on the canal. It was funny listening to people cry about this, especially when you knew their house was lower than the water.
A great idea Amelia, thank you so much for taking the time to propose and support your idea. We live locally and use the canal path for recreation and exercise often. We have been so disappointed with the recent changes. We went on a bike ride just 2 days ago and I was saying to my husband it's just not as nice as it used to be with all the trees cut down and the new material used to cover the path. The loss of trees reduce shade and relief from heat, which is a major loss. The new path material is bumpy and uncomfortable when on a bike. I often see bike riders on canal so I wonder why this material was chosen, as it would seem to discourage future use. A lot of money and work has been put into revitalizing communities along the canal path and it's frustrating to see the canal path becoming less desirable. I do not know Amelia but i agree, she is a rock star.

Absolutely GREAT video explaining everything about the Erie Canal Restoration work going on across the state. This work is all about safety while some group may feel differently. As an Erie Canal Neighbor it's a welcome relief that the NY Canal Corp is fixing the waterway to insure this national treasure is here for years to come.
