Knowmad Your Own Nomad
Добавлен 25 сен 2011
Hike your own hike, knowmad your own nomad.
What do you DO all day as a nomad?
One of the questions I am asked the most is, "What do you do all day as a nomad?" Here are some examples from a day in the life:
1) Meal prep
2) Working out
3) Leave it better than you found it
4) Ongoing process improvement
5) Entertainment

6 years a nomad -- an interview with Phyllis from Homes on Wheels Alliance -- HOWA

Phyllis is wrapping up her time as an assistant on the HOWA staff and ready to embark on her next phase of nomad adventure. She generously agreed to get in front of the camera and pass along the wisdom she has collected over the past six years since she launched as a newbie. Bon voyage, Phyllis, and see you down the road. 00:00:45 Orienting toward nomad life 00:03:22 Domicile 00:04:08 Choosing ...

Whether you are returning to the desert SW for the winter season, or you are wondering how to prepare for coming down to the RTRs for the first time, I've gathered some pointers to review for road-tested nomads and newbies alike. #vanlife #solofemalenomad #rvlife #quartzsite #pahrump
7 Things I Learned on My Practice Run in My New Rig
Просмотров 267Месяц назад
Nomads are constantly learning, whether they have been on the road for 5 days or 5 years. On this trip, I learned how to ask for help and create custom-fitted sheets for my cot-sized mattress, that campgrounnds can be OK places after Labor Day, that I can indeed parallel park this 21-foot beast, my stealth window coverings needed some work, the height of my rig and my parking garage limitations...
If you need a reminder of how important it is to choose how you live, here it is (& for me too)

Part 2 of how to avoid regrettable solar decisions. I tried to make this as basic as possible using watt hours as the common denominator, without needing to know any other electrical jargon to understand how solar set-ups function in nomad rigs. ❤❤I always find stuff to do❤❤
This will help a lot of people.
I found this fabric that blocks sunlight but haven’t used it yet.
I'd love to know how that works out for you.
I get down comforter and pillows from an outlet, flannel sheets. Wool blankets from the thrift shop. Super cheap for all. Thick fuzzy throws are great. People swear by the 12 v bed warmer but haven’t had that yet. For stealth, a decal for a cleaning biz. No one wants that stuff so they don’t break in.
I love my throws, synthetic and wool 😄
Whatever I want.
That's the goal
I know one thing I don’t do is get on RUclips and try to get money. I go to work 12 hours a day on my feet in a factory 15 minute breaks 1/2 hour lunch. That’s what I do normal people work every day Monday through Friday sometimes on Saturday 12 hours a day when I get home, I clean the house I do laundry. I mow the grass, I take the dog for a walk. I do the dishes mop the floor I clean out the refrigerator. I make the bed I do the laundry. I live by myself and I do it all for myself. I go grocery shopping. Don’t have time to sit on a RUclips channel asking for please subscribe so I can get money for your comments, that’s what normal people do. There’s a shock normal people work every day Monday through Friday and on the weekends they catch up on other shit they don’t have time they don’t have sleep. They don’t have RUclips channels that they sit in front of a camera all day on the butt …hard work requires energy and by the way, I turned 65 this year and I’ll be doing this until I’m dead
I worked in a factory, nearly lost my mind. You don’t say if you rent or have a mortgage. Living from a vehicle can lower the overhead of living. If you lived in my area, I could show you ways to make a decent living so you can save up for when you are working less. I’m also going to be working at something till I die. I just hope it’s more land-related.
@LilyGazou Thank you so much for your response here. You didn't have to do that, but it's such a fabulous example of possibilities a community-based mindset can envision, in contrast to what someone steeped in a competition mindset may offer instead. ❤ @lauriepolden6594 I feel for you and the frame of mind your situation has produced in you. Maybe it's your only option, maybe it's not. Maybe you are just being a troll and fabricating your entire comment. Regardless, isolation does things to humans. You've inspired me with a juicy topic for another video that really doesn't concern me if you or anyone else bothers to watch. I pursue this channel as an avenue of creative expression, and leaving breadcrumbs to help other people. If I were after the $$$, I'd be as much of a slave to posting content as you might be to earning money the way you describe. But I exercise the choice not to be. I don't want to live my life through a camera lens. It's not sustainable, as YTer after YTer attest when they switch to a new channel theme or simply stop posting. Godspeed and wishing you well.
There's no need to be condescending and just kind of rude . This woman is living her best life . She's an inspiration for so many of us . I admire her greatly . She's living the way she wants to . She's very well spoken , so much that I don't have a problem understanding what she's saying at all . Her voice is very soothing, and it helps to calm my nerves . I have a hard time listening to some ppl because their voices get on my nerves . I dont know why it's that way , but it is . There's absolutely nothing wrong with what she's doing in her life . I wish the best for her, and I hope you have some happiness as well .
Enjoyable video thank you.
You're very kind.
@@knowmadyourownnomad8194 I really enjoy your videos!!!!
I started binge watching your channel this morning after your interview with Phyllis from HOWA. After about 20 videos, I was amazed at how much you are a kindred spirit. At the moment, I am living at my homebase in Pensacola Florida. I have a 225 ft.² studio apartment, but I seriously long for a similar rig to yours and being able to go full-time on the road. I’ll be 70 in a couple of months, but I still hope to get a few years on the road as a nomad. You are a beautiful person and I appreciate the content so much!
Thank you for the kind words. Your experience living in the small space will serve you well for successfully living out of a vehicle. There may seem to be things in your way, but just do it 😄
The quotes are so inspiring and that sunset beyond beautiful. Life can be so good. Thank you for inspiring me ❣️
You're welcome, and thank you! You're right, life can be so, so good, I need the reminder too 😄
Thanks for picking up the trash. I do the same thing. I hate seeing it out in our public lands.
There's an endless supply, so lots of exercise available.
As a long-time nomad I stay so busy, and I often wonder where the day goes. What do other people do all day?
I wonder if people think they'll be bored out here 😄
@knowmadyourownnomad8194 people can be bored anywhere.
@@geogypsytraveler True that. 😔
What a fantastic video Friend!!! Yeah! What do you do??? LIVE, BREATHE, RELAX... as if those were not huge enough!!! 😂❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Exactly. Maybe that will be one of my next topics: that monkey on our backs about being "productive". It is of equal and possibly even more importance to live, breathe and relax. Cheers, hunny bunny!
@knowmadyourownnomad8194 EGGSACTLY!!! I want that video hunny bunny!!! 😍 🥰🤗
Your title question: I sleep and wake up early in the southwest desert cold season. Start propane heater around 4am. Work on my playlists online as my van warms up (Quartzsite has slow bandwidth between 6 & 9pm). After daylight, I prepare myself a 48oz green smoothie to enjoy up to noon. I'll make runs for fuel and groceries after dawn then work on my campsite. I always have plenty of work in front of me daily in #vanl8fe ! Sounds boring huh ? 👍 Rock on 🙂.
I see what you mean by your playlists: rock on 😄
Plastic may be the Achilles heel of industrial civilization
At least one Achilles heal; there are likely many.
Trouble is, it’s IN everything… including us AND our food chain 😢
@nz-nz What interests me more is why those who have taken the power to make the decisions about what goes into the water and the food, continue to make those decisions for the rest of us, and why we let them.
fantastic!!!!! Debbie you did amazing👏 and Phyllis keep living and loving and spreading kindness as you do.... Enjoy your next chapter and please keep me updated on your journey xoxo much love to you.
Thanks so much, I really appreciate it!
Phyllis holds a special place in my heart❤️ and I'm so happy to watch this Deb. Thanks can't wait to watch now.
Does that go for Yuma, AZ? ( it gets that cold at night?) Thanks for any feedback.
Yuma is further south, so it takes awhile to get that cold, and the colder period doesn't last as long, as say, Pahrump, but it's still the desert, so if you're going there, please do your research.
There is absolutely no way that you could go 400 miles on a tank of gas with a minivan full of your life. That is 640 km and my minivan, 6 cylinder, would do 80k daily to and from work with 2 fill ups. Empty van...just me. No stuff. Where did you get your mile/gallon numbers ..from dealerships? Bah!
It would be great to have actual data from you and the content creator on the year, make and model capacity in gallons/liters your tanks hold, actual miles/kilometers driven for several weeks and receipts for several fill-ups in a row, so we could compare apples to apples.
new sub here . thanks for introducing me to phyllis. does she have a YT channel as well ?
Hi there, Phyllis does not have a channel at the moment, but maybe she'll think about it now 😃
Great interview!!! Pleasure meeting you Phillys! You two are great examples of happy women enjoying the great life!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤

Thank You Phyllis for the work you have done with HOWA.👍
Nice work Deb and Phyllis! I very much enjoyed that conversation. 🙂 A big thanks to Phyllis and all the HOWA staff (Homes on Wheels Alliance) for what they do.
Thank you for the kind words, and thank you, HOWA 🥰
What a great conversation and excited for Phyllis to have a lot more free time. Wonderful questions and helpful for newbies and those that are curious of this lifestyle.
I know, right?! She deserves a million years off 😄 Thanks, Tina!
Thank you Deb and Phyllis--great conversation
Thanks for watching 😄
Phyllis has made wonderful contributions to HOWA. I have learned so much from her and especially enjoy her humor. I think her super power is her ability to relate to others and get them to open up about their life and experiences. I wish her all the best in her new adventures as an official retiree. Wonderful interview. I always enjoy hearing Phyllis's stories. Thank you Deb!
Appreciate the feedback, and thanks for watching 🙂
I like your haircut, too. Good to see you. Great interview. TY
I LOVE THOSE THINGS YOU SAW!!! And I know that turtle sign!!! Sooooo jealous!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Looking forward to watching the cool things you see! 🤗
It's heating up here again for a few days and then will settle down to a more comfortable range. I looked up what you're dealing with--my condolences, my friend 🫡
@knowmadyourownnomad8194 exactly!!! But, in the building they have controlled temperatures and yet, I still envy your freedom to breath fresh air!!! 🥰🥰🥰
There are a few main problems you are having. 1) the oil control rings are stuck this is causing oil to get past the rings into the combustion chamber and causing blow by into the crank case. The blow by is causing your pcv system to pull in excessive oil vapors into the intake which is the carbon deposits on the intake valves. 2) fuel dilution of the motor oil caused by blow by made worse by GDI honda notably had fuel dilution issues with their earth dreams engine now you may have a leaking GDI fuel pump which may be leaking gasoline into the engine via the piston that rides on the camshaft. You might want to try a berrymans B12 piston soak, send the oil to a lab to actually see whats going on in the engine, shorten your oil change intervals to 5,000 miles and switch to Valvoline restore and protect. Hyundai and Kia are not the best engines, just price out a used engine at a junkyard versus other makes, a used engine for your Sorento is 5k and up, yet a highlander 3.5 is a 1,500 engine.
I am now driving a Suburban, but hopefully this may help someone else.
Thanks!
And thank you.
So sorry to hear of your mom's passing--and how good that you could be there. I hope your dad is bearing up. Love the new/old haircut! And I am glad to see you are still making use of that orange down vest that my sister-in-law gave me that was too small. Definitely a great layering piece! My son is thinking of trying the nomad life in his van. I told him to watch all your videos to get solid info and resources. Take care and enjoy Arizona!
@betsybarnum8040 That vest has been a great part of my layering strategy, so thanks again 😃 My dad is doing pretty well. I'm wondering if you had a chance to watch the Catherine Liu video link I sent you, and if you found any value in it 😉
@@knowmadyourownnomad8194 I don't recall getting it! Could you send it again? Too much to keep track of every day!
Its easier to say HOUSE or HOME. sticks and bricks is a derogatory term
Sticks and bricks isn't intended as a derogatory term, at least I don't use it that way. It's easier to say sticks and bricks than "in apartment buildings, houses, condos and other permanent dwellings."
Found you sound practical advice Happy Trails Thanks 🙏🏼 Journey on God Speed
Thank you, you as well. 👋

New subscriber here. I love how natural you are on camera. So much valuable information packed in this video. This is a totally alien environment to me, living here in the UK in a more temperate weather zone. I look forward to watching more of your videos.
Like you, I resisted getting in front of the camera for "talking head" videos, but over time I've gotten comfortable enough to just be myself. You can do it too 😄
I love how you see things!
I think it's my INFJ brain, but who knows? 😀
@@knowmadyourownnomad8194 whatever it is, it’s a gift!
Looking so great with your new haircut!!! Congratulations!!! And very happy for you that you were able to help with your mom's situation so your family could get the family time everyone deserved to process... I'm also very happy that you are heading south for a great winter full of friends!!! Excellent advice on how to plan a great nomad winter!!! Thank you!!!:🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤
Thank you, ma'am. 😁 Shades of 5 or 6 years ago when we first met. I'll save a little corner of BLM in Pahrump in your honor 🥰🥰🥰
Good advice. I spent 4 years in the desert doing the nomad thing. Winds can be brutal. I've been kicking around the idea of going back. For me the deal breaker is winter temps. I hate being cold. I wanted to go to Quartzite at the end of September and come home by the end of November. My wife is very much like you. Temps over 80 and she is miserable. For me, like today, temps in the 70's and I am wearing a sweater, insulated vest and a knit hat. Should I go back this year it probably won't be until February when it is warming up again. Great video, have fun.
Thanks! Good luck with your dual thermostats :)
She could be upset with herself for not doing what she set out to do. Carolyns RV Life says its not near as hard, scary, uncomfortable, as she imagined before she set off in an rv for the first time! Easy? No, but awesome satisfying.
It just takes some research, practicing locally, and then trying it out. Thanks for stopping by!
Wise comments.
The desert is beautiful - enjoy !!!
I was there 2 years ago and was caught off guard by the wind, hard to keep fire going.
I hope you doused the flame and avoided a wildfire 😊
Your 333 plan is so smart!! I watch a lot of nomads and can’t believe how many just wing it! I also like to get where I’m going before dark to get settled in❤
Sometimes I wish I were that brave, or daring, or crazy, to just wing it, but there is a place for all comfort zones 😄
@@knowmadyourownnomad8194 For safety and peace of mind it makes more sense to scout the area to get your bearings. Knowing where gas, grocery and a solid secondary park up is valuable and easy to do by searching the area with your maps app👍
So sorry about your mom Deb. Glad you could be there. I love your hair! So cute, and so much easier in the wind and wild. Glad you are doing well and back out in your SUV. ❤
Thank you 🥰
Totally agree especially with that wind!! This video is a good resource for newbies. So many people just think it is warm in AZ in the winter and that is not always true. Like you said have to dress in layers. Think I'll head down to KOFA in Dec. as there is more space to spread out. Travel safe!!
Thank you, @tinabeane 😃 One of my favorite spots is in KOFA! Maybe we'll run i to each other those winter.
My hoodie keeps my neck and head warm at night.
Yup, that's another way to do it. I got a snowmobile balaclava that I like 😄
Glad you said be kind.
Thank you, it is important 🥰
Sorry to hear of your mom’s passing Deb. Glad you could be there with her though and to help your dad. It’s one of the great advantages of this lifestyle. See you at the RTR ❤
Thank you, and see you there!
That's right: You do need resources to overwinter in the desert. 👍 Rock on 🙂.
Rock on! 🥰 And be prepared.
It is possible to just use your vehicle as your bedroom and safe place and live outside using public facilities..
That's possible, but there have been times when I was immensely glad I had my back-up soft-sdided bucket when there were no public facilities available.
