Join us as we explore bike trails all over Illinois, Wisconsin & beyond!
There's a LARGE variety of trails & bike paths in Chicagoland. Some trails are better than others and it's useful to look at a video before you put the bikes on the rack and drive them somewhere to start a ride. Hopefully these trail videos are helpful to those who seek them out.
My goal is to post videos during the Chicagoland riding season every MONDAY and if I have extra videos to post, I post those on THURSDAY. (Weather, holidays, RUclips processing & time spent editing can cause delays)
See the description in the most recent video for a list of equipment and links to all of my Ebike accessories and upgrades.

Thanks Craig. You are lucky to have Noah in your life. I too have a Noah that lives down the street from me. I met my Noah when he would chase me on his little Razor dirt bike. Now he's just started high school. We didn't even get to ride together this summer 😪 Still time this fall, this would be a good ride us and include some of the Des Plaines trail. 😁👍
I am glad to see they finally made use of this bridge. For many years it was connected to nothing on both ends and I thought that was rather strange.
Yeah, an unconnected bridge is strange but at least they made it into a pedestrian/bike trail instead of just dismantling it. It’s a nice way to get to the other side of the river and back. Ride safe! 😎🤘🏼
Our man on the south shore 🤙😎
😎🤘🏼 At some point I need to see what’s South of that State Line Plaza and I also need to ride the gap between the top of the Lakefront Trail to Wilmette. Then I’ve ridden each segment from Wisconsin to Indiana. Ride Safe! 🧟♂️
Always appreciate your information-rich videos -- please keep making them!
Thank you very much! I’m glad you like them! We didn’t get to as many new trails as we wanted to this year but plan to check out as many as we can next year! Ride safe! 😎🤘🏼
The trail does not actually end at Argyle. If you continue south on side streets, the trail resumes at Montrose Avenue and continues south along the river all the way to Belmont.
@@galeschool good to know! I was following an AllTrails map. I’ll be sure to check it out the next time I ride it. Ride safe! 😎🤘🏼
Love Raceway Woods, we film a lot of our e-bike reviews there.
Nice! If you don’t mind please reach out to me at craig@cynicalzombie.com I have some questions for you. Ride safe! 😎🤘🏼
There's a garbage can and a porta-potty there now! :)
Good news! It’s been a few years since I’ve ridden it, has it been extended at all? Ride safe! 😎🤘🏼
@@Cynical_Zombie Yes! The trail has been extended from Bloomington, south to Funk's Grove, and north from Bloomington to mid-way to Lexington (you may have already been on that part). The county now has funding to extend all the way to McLean.
Nice! It will be cool when it goes all the way to McLean… they’ve got those couple cool arcades there! 👾🕹️😎🤘🏼
I’m still not a fan of trails only feet off of roads. Nice that they put them in but come Spring they are usually littered with gravel and often glass from winter snow plowing and anything else that gets thrown out vehicle windows. The path closed sign takes you to another parking lot at the top of the old Buffalo Mtn. Ski hill. I took my ebike down it for kicks and continued on to downtown Algonquin a few years back. Also just a short stint south of the school you stopped at is Keith Andre’s bike park. I’ve been meaning to check it out myself but looks like a bit of fun from some RUclips videos I’ve seen. FYI, I did make it back to BBQ King for a cold one 🍺👍. Very Cool Another great very detailed video. Thanks!
Overall I agree with trails next to roads, but I’m happy they are there to connect areas to other areas. I also agree with gravel and glass, I see that on the Rt. 31 trail in between Cary & Algonquin. I’ve never head of Keith Andre’s bike park… I should check that out. I’m glad you tried BBQ King! Great food, great people, cool beer system! 😎🤘🏼🍻
Wow, you are always a bike ride ahead of us. We were driving on Longmeadow today and said this will be our next investigation ride! We also said let’s add the “raceway” to it. We come home turn on RUclips and there you are doing the exact ride! Thanks a bunch and we plan on doing the same this Thursday! We are Big Fans and we tell others about you. 🚴🏿👍
THANK YOU SO MUCH! 🤣 It’s worth checking out and I’m a fan of Raceway Woods! It was weird to see a bunch of cool cars on the bike trail but I think I’ll be making that a yearly thing I do since it’s a cool location for a car show! Ride safe and enjoy the rest of the fall weather before winter sets in! 😎🤘🏼
Well done as always! 👏 next time I go up North I will be sure to ride that trail. Cheers 🍻
Thank you! Raceway Woods is definitely worth checking out! Ride Safe! 😎🤘🏼🍻
Excellent video!!!! I missed you as I was there that day at the Raceway car show and was just leaving when that VW bug peeled out
Thank you! The car show was cool. When I first rode Raceway Woods last year I didn’t know they did car shows there. Pretty cool! I was also happy to see Longmeadow Parkway FINALLY open! Thanks for watching! Ride Safe! 😎🤘🏼
This trail is awesome!! I ride it often. They do a great job taking care of it. Lots to see!
Nice! What’s the next trail in that area I should ride? How’s the Monon Trail? Ride Safe! 😎🤘🏼
Dead area brings back memories by D. road and Higgins By main south Of the road we used to call it Farmers field we had keggers On the east side of the road Just south of main south high school my old high school Used to have parties there on weekends back in the 80s Hello hello hello
Hello Eddy! It sounds like a lot of fun! 🍻 I miss the 80’s! Great movies, great music, great TV shows! A simpler time. Ride safe out there! 😎🤘🏼
Just want to let you know that the Houbolt Rd. construction is just about all done. There is a little more work to be done on the Rock Run Greenway Trail at the intersection of Houbolt and Rock Creek Blvd. where there is concrete ramps to be completed at the NW corner and the SE corner (will need to walk bike across) otherwise it should be all done in a week or so.
Good to know! Let me know when it’s completely done. Where’s the best place to park to ride the Rock Run Greenway + Joliet Junction Trail?
@@Cynical_ZombieI’ll probably bike down there this weekend. You can park your vehicle at the Rock Run Preserve off Black Rd. just east of East Frontage Rd. or at the Lower Rock Run Preserve off Houbolt Rd. south of I-80 in Joliet or you could park at Theodore Marsh Preserve off Gaylord Rd. between Theodore and Caton Farm in nearby Crest Hill.
Not bad looking but probably more ideal for walking. Thanks for making the video!
Definitely good for walking! I’m getting closer to finishing every Lake County Forest Preserve with bike trails! Ride safe! 😎🤘🏼
I don’t know if you have ridden the mid county trail that starts at the Great Western Trail near Dean street in St. Charles heading south along Peck Rd crossing Keslinger rd to Founders Park at the corner of Kaneville and Peck rd’s. (Note: you need to head west at Bircher rd. and ride the gravel trail at the Geneva community gardens that takes you to Keslinger). You can head west to Mill Creek along Kanevile Rd. (or cross and do the loop in Peck Farm Park) then cross at S. Mill Creek Dr. and reconnect to path. Follow around to the west till you cross over Main St. into Dick Young Forest Preserve. I have gone further down Deerpath rd to eventually hook up onto the Virgil Gillman Nature Trail. “Certainly willing to be a guide if needed”
Do you have a map of that ride? Some of that sounds like my West River Loop… www.alltrails.com/explore/map/map-ee39e50--34
@@Cynical_Zombie Yeah that is it. How about go out to Summit County CO and ride around Lake Dillon from Frisco to Keystone then off to Breckenridge and back to Frisco or Frisco to Copper mtn over Vail pass and down into Vail. lol those are my dream rides. Ski there every year but definitely want to do a summer trip on the bike.
Out of curiosity what app do you use to plan your bike routes? I would like to have a set plan instead of always looking on google maps to see where I’m heading.
@kmtnbike1117 I use AllTrails. On the description of every RUclips video I post I include the ride map I was following. You can save that to your maps in AllTrails and follow it when you’re ready to ride a trail. Ride safe! 😎🤘🏼
@@Cynical_Zombie Fantastic! I will look into it! Thinking of riding from St.Charles to Yorkville and back today. Oswego to Yorkville will be the challenge with several different bike paths I’ll need to navigate 👍
A nice suggestion would be I&M canal from Hollywood rd in Joliet to McKinley woods. Has 3 offshoot loops to explore. Moose Island, Lake chaminwood, and Ronald Lehman park. 26 mile round trip.
Nice! Do you have a map of the ride I could look at?
@@Cynical_Zombie are you on strava? Maybe I can message or email.
I’m not… I’m on AllTrails.
@Cynical_Zombie I can send you a couple of screen shots of you'd like.

Hello. I recently found your channel and it has been very informative. I live in Illinois and I definitely want to discover as many trails as I can here in my home state. I just road the Kankakee state trail and decided to do so after watching your video on it. Thanks for all the information you now have a new subscriber! 🍻
Thanks for the kind words & for the new sub! There are a ton of trails in Northern Illinois worth checking out. The Kankakee State Trail was great… at some point we are gonna ride it again. Let me know if you find any good trails that I haven’t ridden yet. Ride Safe! 😎🤘🏼
We got ones with picture puzzles to figure out what it’s saying. No Halloween magnets yet.
Nice! Some of those are pretty hard to guess 🤣😎🤘🏼🍻
Christine from BBQ KING says hello and she remembers your visit! She was so nice and made our visit wonderful. Great ride and day!
😂 nice! Love that place! I’m glad you liked it and had a great ride! 😎🤘🏼🍻
What kind of magnets did you get? Are they using Halloween ones yet?
We are doing this ride today! Looking forward to a bottom-up beer!🍻
Nice! Enjoy! Tell ‘em CynicalZombie sent you! 🧟♂️😎🤘🏼
I definitely will. Great day to bike and we love your videos for ideas!
I be walking around that way!!
Nice! I love that loop! And I’m embarrassed to say how many times I’ve been to MSI over the decades and never knew about the Japanese Garden till a few years ago. 😳 Ride (or walk) safe! 😎🤘🏼
I ride this trail almost every night. It's basically my backyard.
Nice! It’s great to live near a trail that has access to a much larger trail system! Thanks for watching! Ride safe! 😎🤘🏼
@@Cynical_Zombie I try not to forget how fortunate I am living near that trail, the Skokie Valley and the DPRT all within relative close distance. Cheers and really enjoy your videos. Thank you
Thanks! More rides to come! 😎🤘🏼
That's where my Rad City was sent to for set uo.
Nice! Have you had them do any other work on it?
Can you please recommend an action camera mount for a bicycle?
I use RAM Mounts since they served me so well on motorcycles, cars & boats. The mount I use is basically this… rammount.com/products/ram-b-408-112-15-a-gop1u With a quick release mounted on top. If you need a more temporary solution (rented bikes/scooters) I use this… rammount.com/products/ram-b-400-a-gop1u
Root River Trail in south eastern Minnesota. Beautiful with historic railroad artifacts along the route. A sinkhole and pies make the trip worth it.
Nice! That one’s on my list… must be nice if multiple people recommended it! Ride safe! Thanks for watching! 😎🤘🏼
Super cool for you to share your video. For someone that grew up in the near west suburbs and now lives in the SW burbs, I never journeyed the north and NW burbs, but am somewhat familiar with the area from hanging out at Schiller woods back in the day and just working over the years in the area. You should check out some of the trails in the Willow Springs area.
Thanks! I’m a big fan of the Des Plaines River Trail… but I still like the Lake County portion more (there’s no dangerous train tracks crossing like in Cook County). You should try some Lake County trails! I’ll look for trails in Willow Springs… do you have any trail names I can look for? Ride safe! 😎🤘🏼
The speed limit is 15 miles per hour.
Yep. But like every trail I see people riding faster. As long as they are doing it safely it doesn’t bother me. Ride safe! 😎🤘🏼
@@Cynical_Zombie I don't ride., I walk with my dog. If you exceed the posted speed limit you are breaking the law. You don't get to decide how fast is safe. That is why they posted a speed limit in the first place.
In general, when you’re near people you should likely ride less than 15 mph. But that largely depends on the trail and the specific location you are, how many people, lighting, etc. During winter some trails turn into snowmobile trails with 30+ mph speed limit. Some places on the Chicago Lakefront Trail you should ride even slower than 15 when it’s congested by people but that trail is sort of in a category of it’s own out of the 200+ trails I’ve ridden thus far. But in general, ‘don’t be a dick’ is a good philosophy on a trail.
One of my favorite trails, it can get muddy and very wet after a serious storm. I will be riding it a few more time before the winter cold sets in. Thanks for sharing. Yes the railway crossing is quite a surprising feature ... a few times i have had to wait more than 15 mins for the train to pass. All in all its a treasure to have such a long gravel trail this close the suburbs ... cheers
Thanks for watching! I laughed out loud at “quite a surprising feature” 🤣😂 that’s a nice way to put it! 😆 That is the #1 thing that they need to address. I haven’t been on the trail since I made this video but I may get another look at in October. Ride safe! 😎🤘🏼
My friend and I took our e-bikes into Chicago last month and rode the lake shore path. Great 28 mile round trip. We parked at Fordham Hall parking garage at Loyola University. Parking was $8 or $12. We were told that we could have parked a few miles north for free right next to the shore trail. Oh well. Great video. Loved the blues music and Japanese music when you were in the garden. We live in Rockford where we do a 22 mile loop which I’ll try to attach for you.
Unfortunately I couldn’t good back far enough to show one going around Rock Cut State Park which adds another 6+ miles.
Nice! It’s a nice ride back and forth! I’ve met soooooo many people from the suburbs who are too scared to give the Lakefront Trail a ride. I’m glad you like the video! Almost all my Chicago videos use blues music. It seems fitting. With RUclips I’m forced to pay for a music service (I use Epidemic Sound) so I don’t get hit with copyright issues. Since I have to pay anyway, I always look to see what other music is available that I wouldn’t normally use but is fitting for 1 part (like the Japanese Garden). I haven’t ridden anywhere in Rockford yet, send me a map of the ride when you have one available. I’d love to see it! Thanks for watching! Ride Safe! 😎🤘🏼
This being the closet Illinois state park to the Milwaukee area. I have been here several times. I think it kind of resembles the Horicon Marsh up in Dodge County.
It’s a nice State Park.. but you should also check out Moraine Hills State Park in McHenry. I like those trails more and you have access to McHenry Dam and the Prairie Trail (if you’re willing to ride on the street for a little bit) Thanks for watching! 😎🤘🏼
@@Cynical_Zombie I have but I like chain o lakes better
i went to go see the tunnel in 2019 or 2018 and it was closed then too. its a shame its been closed that long, i dont think they're ever gonna fix and open it sadly
I’m hoping it opens at some point… if it does, we will ride that trail again! Thanks for watching! Rides safe! 😎🤘🏼
Why don't you wear a helmet?
Hello! Thanks for watching! I wear a helmet every time I ride my motorcycle but as far as my ebike, I only wear it when I have to (Bike The Drive), or when I want to mount a camera for a 360° video or when I’m riding a high risk ride (large portions on busy streets) Personal preference I guess.
If you like these type of events I would suggest Ragbrai bike event across Iowa last weekend of July. Noticed a woman wearing her 50th anniversary jersey at 30:26 in the video. Ebikes are allowed but I leave mine home and pedal my road bike across the state until the day I can’t. FYI, beer gardens are plentiful but I usually wait to have a cold one at the end of the ride. (Not sure if you have ever covered this event).
Wow, I’ve never heard of that event! Thanks for putting it on my radar, I’ll look into that one! Ride safe! 😎🤘🏼
@@Cynical_Zombie It’s a week long event but you could choose to do one day or as many days as you would like. Typically about 20,000 full time riders and route changes every year from Missouri River to the Mississippi. The route is announced about the last week of January each year. 40/100 miles each day with many towns to stop and eat and enjoy the activities. Look forward to it each year.
Wow, that’s a massive event! Even bigger than Bike The Drive! 😳
So how much was it totally? $150? Than $150 for a hotel room. I guess.
Yeah it was $150 per person. We wanted to stay the night in Chicago but it was too expensive… with tax and parking it was over $300 a night so we did VIP only.
@Cynical_Zombie there use to be a KOA Camping area about 6 miles outside Chicago so one could camp there or rent a room. But that was over 30 years ago.
We're you guys on prairie path thus Saturday?
We were not. I was in Lake County doing another Forest Preserve. But you must have seen my doppelgänger! 🤣😎🤘🏼
Cynical!!! It was great meeting you and your wifey in person bro. That event was AWESOME and Lord willing, I'll be there next year as well. Hope to see you there. Thanks for the shout-out.✌🏾
Thanks! I hope the weather is just as good next year! I plan to schedule a time to meet at the beer garden after the ride! Ride safe out there! 😎🤘🏼🍻
A BIG Shout Out to everyone I met at Bike The Drive!
Right after Bike The Drive starts there is a little section without audio. That is to avoid copyright issues with the music they were playing.

Thanks for your videos in the Chicagoland area! We're tandem cycling "neighbors" from Sugar Grove who have ridden from the Lakefront trail north into Wisconsin several times but never ridden further south than McCormick Place. We used this video as the backbone of our ride yesterday south to Whiting (wish we had time to stop in the National Mascot Hall of Fame) and then returning back to marker 0 via the Marquette Greenway. On return we rode through the naturalized former Miggs Airfield at Northerly Island and then to just south of Navy Pier. We were not personally uncomfortable with the shared road portions of our ride but appreciate that others may be less comfortable. The State Line Plaza is a little gem. Thinking of starting here and riding to New Buffalo, MI to ride in 3 states on one ride. I should have checked to see if overnight parking is available there. Otherwise, may park at casino and ride briefly back to Illinois to start.
You’re very welcome! I’m glad my video was useful to you! Need to set up a ride to go South from State Line Plaza! That’s all unexplored area to me! Since we typically park at Adler Planetarium, we ride the trails in Northerly Island a lot during the summer. I’ve read they are working to fully connect State Line Plaza to New Buffalo! I can’t wait to check that out! Ride safe! 😎🤘🏼
Nice meeting you at the Raceway woods car meet on 9/7/24. I love this spot and that’s what we used to get to the meet. The police was extra bored one evening and not happy with the Surron and Talaria where you start this video and decided to chase us around town 🤣. Super detailed and good info funny video. I downloaded the app and your map to the Huntley section which is new to me. I never knew there was a Randall tunnel/underpass now! We went on the new Longmeadow that day and a local dirt biker showed us a new trail to the town of Algonquin and some of his jumps skills. Fun riding day!
It was awesome to meet you too! It’s gonna be hard for cops to chase you if you know the local bike trails like the back of your hand! 🤣 I’m glad that Huntley is accessible but I will explain in a future video (the video I created the day we met) that Huntley gets screwed 3 different ways when it comes to bike trails. I like that Longmeadow is FINALLY open! Ride safe out there! 😎🤘🏼
@@Cynical_Zombie🤣 that’s exactly what we did. They had no chance. I will stay tuned for the new video release for the info. I like your format very well organized. For sure ride safe as well🤙
The bridge in Wheaton is called the Volunteer Bridge for obvious reasons. Going further into Elgin is Gail Borden Library, Hemmens Auditorium, Spring Street (brick pavers), and a rook.
Good to know! I pass by these places but sometimes have no idea what it is. Thanks! 😎🤘🏼
I live in Rockford. I have an e-bike and a Honda Civic. How much did U-Haul charge you for putting on the hitch and how much was the hitch itself?
@@darrylswanson1199 so I bought the hitch through them and the total cost with the install and a lifetime warranty was $298. But the hitches are car specific. So make sure to go to their website and see what your options are for your specific vehicle.
This was the old Nike missile site
Interesting! Any idea exactly where?
@@Cynical_Zombie the section that was fenced off is where the main base was. The route you took from Tower Rd was the service road going north. I ride this trail all the time and we call this area 51... LOL. WIKIPEDIA has some more detailed info !
Nice, thanks! I'll check it out! Looks like good riding weather this week... enjoy and be safe out there! 😎🤘🏻
What date did you do this ride?
Look like May 18th of this year.
At Orchard Road, if you look to the west, there is a 5 foot 5 inch underpass. That used to be the Gilman Trail, the bridge over Orchard Road replaced it.
Interesting! I’ll give it a look the next time I’m there, thanks! 😎🤘🏼
Where did you park?
@@briankrzyzowski7907 for this ride, I was originally intending to ride the aurora branch, but part of it was closed. I parked in Wheaton and then rode up the Elgin branch to get to the Geneva spur.
@Cynical_Zombie I'm minutes from the start of centenial, I and m, and cal sag trails. Always looking for something new
Very cool! It's awesome to be real close to a large trail system! Ride safe out there, weather looks good this week! 😎🤘🏻
