Does Portal 2 Have the Best Tutorial In Gaming?
Portal 2 opens with "The Courtesy Call," a tutorial that seamlessly blends storytelling, humor, and gameplay. In this video, we’ll explore how Valve crafted a perfect introduction, setting a gold standard for game design and immersing players in Aperture Science’s eerie, decayed world.

Finding Peace In The Eerie - Liminal Spaces and Garry's Mod
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.21 день назад
Why do we sometimes feel a strange sense of calm in eerie, empty places? From deserted parking lots at night to abandoned hotel corridors and vast digital landscapes, there’s a unique comfort in these unsettling spaces. This phenomenon, often referred to as "liminal spaces," has taken on new life in our digital age, particularly in games like Garry's Mod. In this video, we’ll explore the origin...
How 'I Saw The TV Glow' Reveals the Power of Media as a Mirror
Просмотров 607Месяц назад
"I Saw The TV Glow" explores many themes, but at its core, it’s a film about the way we connect with and reflect on the media we consume. It delves into how TV shows, movies, and other forms of media can serve as mirrors to our inner selves, shaping our identities and helping us make sense of the world around us. Sorry for the Silent Hill 2 Remake gameplay - It was all I had at the moment hope ...
I knew that the first few minutes was tutorial, but I could hardly tell where tutorial ends and the real game begins.
For me, Courtesy Call was obviously a tutorial, but as you said, it also humorously subverted that expectation for experienced players like myself: _Press Space to Say "Apple"_ "Now what you're doing there is jumping."
Ubisoft: Press W to walk This is garbage!!! Valve: Press W to walk THIS IS THE BEST TUTORIAL EVER!
I think it's really what both companies do after they tell you the controls that really matter. But I can understand the frustration when we do seem to only praise certain companies but demonize others.
This is why Garry'smod will never go away and why its really my most favorite game. the 1st time I played it back in I think 2015 I at 1st was overwhelmed by all the freedom I had...then I explore to 2 maps the game comes with GM_Construct and GM_Flatgrass, maps just...empty and calming. I then learned what a liminal space was. People think the Backrooms started this, but Garry'smod started this back in 2006.
Yes! It's such a nice game to relax with!
nice vid !
yes it has because gabe newell is my Christ, steam is his body and valve's games are his blood
Yes our lord and savior GABE!!!
It's crazy that I instantly recognized the flash game at 1:21. That's one of the Don't Escape games, Don't Escape 2 iirc. I loved that game so much, Don't Escape is great, haven't played it in a looong time.
Yes, thank you for noticing! I was going to use King's Quest but I thought Don't Escape would be more fun.
... Portal 2 ... Best ... In Gaming? yea
Portal 2 Best in All!!!!!!
The best tutorials are the ones you didn’t even realize you had.
Most people feel the existential dread of a place where people are supposed to be, but aren't, but that's not all liminal spaces are, and I wish the other side was portrayed a bit more, instead of just BiG sCaRy MoNsTeR iN tHe BaCkRoOmS!!1!
The video feels like the first of a series, talking about the game chapters at a time.
Is there an audio glitch at 8:32, or is it just me?
Most definitely, I can't believe I missed that. 😅
@@cakeylies I thought that was an intentional joke, since it occurs at the moment of portal transition.
The commentary, gameplay, and editing made me think this channel was those ones with at least 100k subs, very nice video!
I don't think it's quite at that level yet. But thank you for watching and enjoying!
@ in my eyes it is quite close
Counterpoint: The correct balance of explanation and exploration and handholding varies wildly from person to person, dependent on their temperament, preexisting gaming experience, preexisting game knowledge, mood, and the real-world context they are playing the game in. One person's way-too-handholdy is another person's way-too-open-ended-and-confusing. Therefore, no game can have a perfect balance because there _is_ no single perfect balance. Side note: This is a part of the motivation for very handholdy games - many developers consider the player feeling patronized and gated is considerably less bad than the player being confused and unable to play the game.
I didn't think about it like that! I honestly just get so upset by the handholding I don't normally think about why it might be there. Thanks for the insight!
84th subscriber. You will do amazing things, I can already tell.
Thanks for watching! I'm glad you think so. Hopefully, I can keep up the momentum!
@@cakeylies I hope so!
From the Portal 1 Developer Commentary: "Portal is effectively an extended player training exercise. We spend a huge portion of the game introducing a series of gameplay tools, then layering these tools into increasingly difficult puzzles." Basically the entire game is a tutorial for the next section, naturally building on itself to teach complicated concepts and puzzle elements. That's part of why the game is so genius
That makes so much sense in both games! Both of them build up your skills, so the final "boss battles" feel like just a skill check rather than actual battles!
I actually didn’t realize the whole chapter was a tutorial, it’s that good
For me, that's exactly what I'm looking for in a tutorial! Stop with all the steps by steps mobile games. So love!
Right?! I was one of the retuning players having come from the original Portal. It never really occurred to me that first chapter was the tutorial because of how expertly it was done. I miss this Valve, the one that had amazing games before all they cared about is Steam.
Fantastic video! I hope this gets more views :3
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!!!
I need more portal videos or I’m going to explode
Yes! I hope i see more in the coming months or maybe just maybe valve actually makes a 3rd game????
Here before this blows up
@@cosmophobia1917 Here's hoping!
Bro, I thought this was a big channel, this video is so good, I hope your channel grows bro! Good stuff
I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching!
Hey bud, I have liked and subscribed, but wanted to give some feedback - The feedback SEEMS negative but I am sharing because I think you have lots of potential and maybe this might help guide you. Maybe you agree, maybe you disagree, but better for me as a Portal-obsessed binge watcher of youtube videos to share my thoughts, just in case you think "Oh yes, this might improve my next video and keep the audience engaged!". So my behaviour when clicking on the video - I clicked on this video because I love Portal 2 videos. I am a game dev. I love learning about history of the game, lore, or weird questions that RUclipsr's come up with. I have ADHD, but typically watch videos through from start to end, especially if it is an interest of mine (e.g. portal, valve, tf2). I was NOT interested in your video immediately, it's a slow intro on your video, showing the intro, then "Origins" section and such, I feel it should go more quickly into the actual Courtesy Call section where you analyse/compare with portal 1 and such. I was skipping to later parts and was suprised it's nearly half-way through the video before you begin talking about the main point of the video's title. The intro/origins part gives similar vibe of "Using google to find a recipie for cookies, but getting a life story of their past on why these cookies are important". It's a tricky one, on one hand, you want to share your perspective and experience and show your personality on your RUclips channel, but it also took priority over the actual title of the video in terms of "order" of where you placed things. I do wish to hear about your own experiences/opinions and such, perhaps shorter snippets of this WITHIN the actual "Courtesey Call" section, or at least moving it all to later part of the video. I am glad your video wasn't too much like "Portal 2 is a fps game from 1970 that did X Y Z and you play as Chell and it was produced by Valve", as this is a common issue with other videos, often games are known already and we get "reintroduced" to a game, thus making viewers skip parts of videos. Anyway, excellent stuff, hope to see more, and hopefully this comment is useful to you - I don't speak for EVERYONE but just something to consider. I guess the takeaway is to make sure the video's core focus is the priority, which you did do, but even more so!
I don't take that in anyway as negative, constructive criticism should never be mistake for such! I really want to improve each one of these videos every time I make them. Whether that is visual or writing so to know that the pacing is off is great to know in a lot of different ways. I'm definitely stealing the idea you had about telling my own experiences while doing the actual analysis to keep up video engagement! Thanking for watching and I hope I can keep your attention in the next one.
@@cakeylies Haha amazing to see your reply! Sometimes I give feedback and it's not taken as kindly (I mean, fair enough, I'm just a viewer, not a youtuber - Who am I to say anything!). And YES, perhaps some folks might not like the injection of personal experiences within the meat of the video topic, but I do like it, it's like a subtle way to get people curious about you yourself, but also it's quick/brief and keeps on topic and doesn't derail too much (nor is it just a "section" that people can skip, so you win both ways, hopefully!). Will keep my eye out for your next vids and will peek at older vids! Don't worry, I won't hammer you with feedback in all of your vids lmao
Go ahead and hammer away if you want! But no, thank you for the advice. Every time I can correct something wrong with my video, even if it is small, it brings me joy. I'm really trying to make the content I watch on a daily basis, but I can't do that without trial and error. Hope others who don't like your comments learn that critique is the best way to get better, so keep on commenting!
Great production quality. I was shocked that you have 39 subs
Thanks I keep trying to do better each video! Good to see it is working out, thanks for watching!
I was really impressed by the tutorial in Spy Party, have you tried it?
I actually haven't touched that game, I can add it to my steam wishlist! Always down to try new games.
Good video :) interesting topic as a game dev
Yes, I think a lot of games forgot just how important the tutorial is. MMOs!!! Especially.
Agreed. 🍰
Great video. I played through Portal 2 at a very young age (in comparison to many), and at no time did I feel overwhelmed or unable to figure out what to do. I just felt it fueled the exploration of mechanics, while also keeping the solutions somewhat linear and straight forward, so that anyone can easily get immersed in the atmosphere and the story...
@Qwertyioi I think it's what makes it so approachable! I mean, games like the Talos Principle and Qube are great, but I think the key to why they don't have any mainstream success is the opening levels.
I played it when I was 8
I was less than 7 when I played portal for the first time I think and I knew how to play well
I also feel like this theres times I've seen corridors only lit by clear fluorescent lights and it literally made me want to sit on the floor facing up looking at the fluorescent lights
Yes! Back when I was in middle and high school, I would just stare at those lights when the building was empty. I feel malls get this way as well.
Finaly dude, someone gets it. Honestly an underrated video, I really appreciate the effort you put into it in fact I'm watching it again cause of how hypnotic and how honest it all feels. God bless you man :)
I'm glad you enjoy it! I have only ever been able to talk about this peaceful feeling with friends to share it with the wider netsphere has been a blast!
It's hard to talk about liminal spaces, because people never seem to share my sentiments. They're always portrayed to be horror, but I never see them as anything but comforting. Knowing there are no other people, it's just you (or one familiar person with you) makes everything feel so safe.
I completely agree!! Maybe it's just the way we grew up that makes us feel like this, but I find liminal spaces way more interesting without monsters!
fantastic. seriously understand this feeling, yet i never thought about it in this way - i live day to day, yet i do not absorb the days as well as i could.
Glad you could relate to this feeling! I didn't quite know how to describe this feeling until I had to sit down and write this video.
Great video and insanely chill vibes from the music,to the voice, and the concept of liminal spaces in general. Keep it up man :)
Glad you like the video! Hope to keep improving with each one.
Underated
Yes! I Love liminal space games like Pools, BET, and Anemoiapolis but I feel that people over look Garry's Mod as it has such a rich culture of these kinds of spaces even before the term was coined.
one of the first cakey-type videos
Me when I truly Cakey the video
this is a really deep topic and i feel that It opens up my mind. Something about how media is interpreted and how its used as method of escape vs reality. Its a real mind opener and make me think about how I watch media and how I use it to escape and deal with the modern world.
I think this movie changed me somehow. I can’t explain it.
I think with a lot of Jane Schoenbrun's movies it leaves you on a almost empty filling. Not in the way a show like Bojack would but in a way that wants you to take action. In the case of I Saw The TV Glow it seems to be saying find yourself it's not too late, while showing two sides of using media to do so. But as the ending shows you have to take those steps yourself you can't have anyone force it on it. But I completely agree the movie feels like it fundamental changes you in a way that is not explainable. It gives the feeling that any changes is possible but also the pain that can be caused by not changing. Because while change is hard, not being yourself is even harder. Sorry for the long comment hope you liked the video and I hope you can find the change you want to make!
