Student Interview - How Music Theory allows efficient PRACTICE
Просмотров 1733 месяца назад
Yet another story of a student finally becoming able to learning understand theory and navigate the fretboard. In this video, you will hear Apryl emphasize how this new knowledge allowed her to develop meaningful practice routines. She knows what to practice, how, how much, etc… Think about this… wherever you are on your guitar journey, you are only a specific number of practices away from your...
Student Interview - Why YOU NEED to learn Music Theory as a Guitarist
Просмотров 1763 месяца назад
“Even if they didn’t know music theory, if YOU want to understand the guitarists you look up to, YOU need to learn theory ” Jason was definitely reluctant to learn theory for many years because of the following reasons: - He thought it would hurt his sound and creativity - He was afraid it would be obscure and useless in practice - He thought it would take 10 years to really understand… 6 month...
Student Interview - How the Will Metz Academy Method "Changed Jason's Life" on Guitar
Просмотров 2693 месяца назад
“This guitar course absolutely changed my life...” When I realized I could help guitarists with their understanding of music theory and how to navigate their fretboard, I quickly realized I had the potential to impact people with my method. But even though it became more and more irrefutable that I was able to help guitarists, I never thought that my impact would literally “change their lives” ...
From NO KNOWLEDGE of Theory to FULL UNDERSTANDING - Evan's Transformation
Просмотров 3395 месяцев назад
Evan came to me with one question: WHY? He wanted to understand what he had been playing for 30 years without looking to get answers. Like many guitarists, he stayed idle due to a combination of a busy life and hearing over and over again that he didn’t need theory or music education. Finally, he had enough. And in 5 months, using my method, he now knows everything he will ever need to know AND...
MAKING SENSE of chord progression and how to IMPROVISE OVER THEM
Просмотров 26 тыс.6 месяцев назад
Guitarists love to improvise but often have trouble knowing what scale/mode they need to use in a given context. “Should I use the major pentatonic scale? The minor pentatonic? Where do I use modes? Is the first chord the key?” Etc. Before I really understood theory, I remember being always confused by chord progressions… So I would simply use my ear to slowly find a scale that seemed to work. ...

I think there is a small error in the diagram at 33:05. If it's E major, shouldn't the G string be fretted at the first fret instead of being open? Otherwise the shape of E major would not be shifted unchanged towards the high E string, as shown in the next diagram.

I’ve got to tell you that you teach in a way that makes it so much easier for me to understand the caged system, triads, and bar chords. I am looking forward to spending a lot of time studying this lesson. Please don’t change anything in the way you present your lessons!

I really appreciate you sharing all this. It's over my head in most places until you play the notes and the ear can hear what you're explaining logically but I see why there are no quick tricks and why guitar is a lifetime pursuit. I also like that instead of trying to bait and lie youre teaching foundations and context. Again, much appreciate all the knowledge you're imparting on us.

The only way to truly learn something is via this long format, so we can try it ourself and spend some time actually experimenting. Knowing something and KNOWING something is completly different.. if you for example try to play the arpeggios of 2 chords in the same place by switching the caged shapes, you will have a hard time doing that quickly unless you spend some time avtually leqrning the shapes and not just knowing the shapes just sort of, and understanding the concept, but not having it be second nature. Long form helps to learn this lesson!

I kept having troubles with my thumb placement when really taking the time to correct it while watching Justin Guitar videos 2-3 years ago after years of not even thinking much about it. I used to have the bad habit of hooking my thumb. Well, when I kept trying to put my thumb in the "right position" according to Justin, and the same as you're suggesting, I realized part of my problem. I have a hitchhiker's thumb, and it just doesn't allow the same positioning of the thumb unless you force it, and it doesn't work out well. When I "relax" it seems to point more towards the headstock. Straight up and down behind the second finger results in a cramped thumb muscle, and, the joint of the thumb is mainly against the neck, not the thumb pad. I Googled some, and apparently it is a thing for people who have hitchhiker's thumb and play guitar, but I make do. I love singing, songwriting, and guitar playing too much to not find a relaxed way to still play, even with my thumb needing to adjust.🙂👍 (Yes, "thumbs" up icon on purpose, lol! 😂) But, if I'm wrong, you've taught enough people and may have come across this previously, let me know. I'm humble enough to try whatever tips/advice you would have for someone with thumbs like me. 🙂

After watching almost 80 different guitar lessons on RUclips over the last weeks on various topics that I wanted to learn about, you were EASILY one of the TOP teachers on RUclips! :) I really love your laid-back style and fully-informative without-being-tedious videos. I had only seen your video about triads, but due to liking it so much, I decided to watch your entire Fretboard Navigation and Theory Lessons playlist. I knew this information, overall, but I like to take the humble approach you talked about in this video, and make sure I fill any gaps in my theory/guitar knowledge. I don't usually subscribe to anyone because I don't want a bunch of notifications, nor do I care about new videos from a particular person as I search for certain topics when I want to watch an informative video, but, I'm subscribing to you, Will! Great content and delivery! :) I'm looking forward to watching your other videos and putting into practice what you teach. I already did, today, by harmonizing the C Major scale in all 5 C.A.G.E.D. shapes. Previously, I have a single chord in the 5 shapes, then moved to the next chord, and I've also played one shape, moving it up the fretboard for every chord I can reach with that shape. Recently, I started to play little chord progressions with triads in the C Major scale to contextualize them while learning their shapes, but to actually play the harmonization for all 5 C.A.G.E.D. shapes was quite helpful, thank you! :) I'll do this harmonization process with triads, also, along with then playing some different progressions, as well, to practice them in a song context and going back and forth between them. :) Thank you, Will! :)
