How to age well into your 80s | Live a LONG and STRONG life
After 10 min. i knew nothing more, to much bla bla, come to the point men.
It is, what it is " life expectancy for a male in the U. S. Is 73.5, we lose almost everything, while getting older"
Close to 70 here. Git more time to lift seriously since I retired. Lifting more weights than I did at 30 years old. Its a science now and improvements are possible
Now 67 ,have trained since I was 19.Training with kettle bells ,sand bags.A year ago I started using clubs and mace,I use Adex club and mace systems,as they are the best.Wish I had of started this type of training years ago.
I'm 63 and retired. I go to the gym every day. I take my cardio and do it on separate days then weightlifting. If I try to do any cardio after weightlifting, I'm useless. I hit it hard at the gym doing seven or eight exercises for a single body part, such as chest, four sets, maybe five and I'm done. I've tried to get on the bike after working out and it's useless. I used to be a marathon runner and then wanted to tone up my muscles and now I just do mostly weightlifting and the bike.
how high off the ground should the bar be?
"muscle mass increased by 40% in 12 weeks". sure
I am a 82 year old retired Fireman/Carpet Layer..I lift weights and walk daily..I feel the weight training is important..I do curls, overhead lifting, triceps and bench work..When I walk, I do a busy--ONE MILE..I also keep busy with household exercise..I am in the yard daily digging, pruning etc..My fellow retired Firemen are not so fortunate..Most have given up on exercise and are pretty much couch potatoes..I fight that..I have done some carpet work as of late (my neighbors house)..Being busy is important. I do get aches and pains, but weight training seems to correct that..Not having others my age to work out with makes it rough.. I do my exercise alone at home (lifting) and walking with friends that I have met.. Most people walk too slow and like to stop and talk..It is important to stay regimented and get that brisk walk in..---along with weight training.. I really need to improve on balance training and squats...I also eats healthy (a little too much).I feel that my work ethics have aided me over the years..Another important part of health is mental..In retirement, I have done a lot of sailing and motor homing and even some politicing (I don't recommend that)..Enjoy each day, stay in contact with friends and family and don't take things seriously..---I hope this helps explaining my situation..Oh yes--and a great wife!
I'm 68 and weight train twice a week and walk 3.5 miles in nature 4 x a week. To me, the walking is not only for my physical health, but mental health as well. Neglecting mental health as you age is more detrimental than the physical. We need both!!
You need younger seniors
What type of exercise does the convicted felon 🤡 do 😂😂😂 besides cheating at golf ⛳️?
Weighs all the way!
I am 70. I run 7 kilometres 5 days a week. I also lift weights at least 4 days week. Fit.
Hi, thank you for this very interesting video. How practicing rower must be considered ? Endurance, strenght or both ? Is it a good exercice ? Thank you for your answer !
This answers questions I had. Currently walking briskly 1 hr a few times a week. Medicare gives me free health club membership, so I called for info.
What I would say is keep away from jogging, cycle instead. I have cycled hundreds of thousands of miles in my life and my knees are working perfectly at nearly 66. My boss was an avid runner. His knees are completely shot and his mobility is now severely affected by it with running. Stick to cycling or swimming for cardio, if you still want to walk in later life.
Lifting heavy is the key.
Second post!@10:58, he said that stretching is not as important as strength training. Wrong! For 34 years, I start my exercise regimen out with a good 5 minutes of isometrics. head rotations, circular hip movements, circular arm movements ( 20 forward and 20 reverse) various head turns, wrist movements, etc. These preemptive exercises ward off arthritis, stiffness of joints, and being unable to balance our equilibrium.
Thank you for the encouragement that this can be changed
Rule of thumb on how to break up your excercise time if you want to live well as you age: 80% Weight training 20% Cardio There you go.
Way too much waffle. Not enough constructive advice for the length of this video.
So are they healthy?
If my pecker still works at 100 yes I'd like to live otherwise I'm out on all this stuff
Geez people. The gym is good but work on the environment. Your garden. Your dwelling. It’s not just free. It pays dividends. Get a push mower. Paint the house.
Where does hockey fall in the guidelines ?
Belief in God gives us the ultimate reason to "care" about life. But, of course, none of us can escape Hebrews 9:27. So we need to work out our souls, as well as our bodies. :)
Great content, thanks
So this work out is only if you join a gym
A combination of both, plus good rest, good nutrition. Training in the 80/ 20 protocol for cardio respiratory; that is 80 % training in zone 2 and 20% in VO 2 Max. Three days of strength training.
What should we do if we cannot afford a gym and we don't have all that equipment at home? I am 63, 100 lbs. overweight. I also have upper and lower back pain due to 4 bulging disks and knee pain. These suggestions are good for people in good health but not for the rest of us.
LONG! LONG! LONG! But 100% TRUE! I'm 65 and I will do both, I'm in the gym almost every single day doing 2 hour session per session, and roughly 2 times per week will do a double session day, when riding the exercise bicycle I'll do combo work-outs, while riding I'll do 4 different dumb bells exercise's, my VO2 Max is off the charts, some time ago I did a VO2 Max test and the technician who was performing this test said that it appears that there a problem, so we'll have to start over, so e did about 2 minutes into the test the Tech then said, I guess the first test was correct, my wife then asked, is there a problem, the tech then replied, I've never seen this before then showed up the read out from the first test then compared it with the 2 test session and said that his breathing is off the charts! My wife then asked if this was bad or good! She simply replied, it's GREAT! This probably due to my times from riding bicycles, at 16 I was already doing 100 mile plus rides and many of these rides involved good doses of hill climbing, when living in San Jose Ca, I would ride to Santa Cruz which involved riding over the Santa Cruz Mountains this ride involved roughly 7,500 ft of total climbing, back then it wasn't about my health, I just simply liked riding my bicycles, at the same time I was a teachers aid teaching their conditioning and weight training classes, I guess this was my spring board for me to getting back to my healthier form of today, yes in-between then and about 3 years ago I got married and had children and all that jazz and of course my healthier ways of living took a U turn, I was still active but not as much as I'd like, then several years ago I decided it's time to get back on the horse again, so for me getting back into it wasn't so hard, so my advise to others, get off that rocking chair and start doing something, join a gym and get the blood flowing, go on a good walk, ride a bicycle and so on! One of the owners of the gym that I am a member at has told me, we're not making any $$$ on you, he then asked kindly of my age, I replied 65 going on 28 he then put his hands on his hips while looking at the ceiling and said only one word, UNBELIEVABLE! Then he just walked away. As for mixing strength and endurance training, no problems here, one time one of the owner of the small gym that I am a member at asked me If I made a booking for gym time, yes with this gym we need to book gym time. Anyway I asked why are you asking, he then said because it's a bit crowded in here, I then said yah! I did it was at 4:00 we both then looked at the clock and it was reading 7:40, I was like WOW! I had no clue how long I was in the gym, I did everything both strength and Cardio, this by far was one of my longest sessions. BTW: this video is really great advice for those who are in need of some guidance, also I'm helping others in my gym with small tips here and there on how to improve their training, every single time, they are like WOW! What a difference! I'll have 3 fundamentals when training, #1 Concentration, #2 Balance #3 Form, if you can't do #1 then #2 and #3 are out the door! Training like a fish that's out of water is not for me and I hate seeing others training this way, either I will offer some help or I'm off to a different part of the gym to complete my work-out session. Just my long 2 cents worth, I'm out, off to the gym I go.
Cardio is much better for weight loss and stamina
Recommended
Strong legs makes you able to do more.
Outstanding content and presentation!
Please don't tell seniors what to do. We are both in our 70s and know what to do. Just don't be lazy.
This is a great video. It would be nice if you could make a video for the routines you recommended at the end of the video so that people could follow it and only change the weights to suit themselves.
Interesting & insightful! It shouldn't be mutually exclusive weight or Cadio as both should be integrated into an effective program along with flexibility which as you remarked comes into play with weight training.
Excellent information ‘ that I needed to hear ‘ and it has been proven over and over again that strength training for seniors is very important ‘ with low intense cardio ‘ like walking ‘ a great combination ‘ which I do
This was the best video for accurate info plus specific guidelines and examples. Thank you!!
Combo is Best. I’ll be 65 this month, been doing it for almost 3 years. I feel So Much better than I did 3 years ago.👍
.No matter the age. Both!
I am 67 and do 400 sit ups and 100 pushups a day and run about five miles a day. I don't really think of myself as old really. I also do squats. I take taurine to avoid muscle loss.
Both?
Wrong about protein!!!!!! Milk kills!!!!!
No
100 grams of protien NOT ENOUGH that's the one thing he has wrong 1 gram per desired body weight
Dead on mate,! Have you looked in the mirror lately? If not, it's time ya took a long hard look 😮crap talk
Weights first and foremost with some hour long rides thrown in once or twice a week, and a well balanced diet, and rest job done
I think we have terms i.e. mortality & morbidity. Low M mass accelerates morbidity, i.e. loss of function. The health industry & society should stop talking about life expectancy & focus on avoiding the onset of morbidity. Unfortunately adolescents today are doing less & less with their bodies & brains as a teacher, clinician & parent I see less & less incidental fitness & the influence of SM mindless memes. Smart phones seem to be destroying almost everything I remember was a 'normal' childhood at the end of the last C? Somehow we/society need to monetise doing physical & mental exercise, just like SM. There's a dumbing/lazing down of almost everything. Given the rapid development of AI & it becoming increasingly difficult to determine what's true & false, I'm not sure what the answer is? I'm not worried about Over 60s, it's the under 18s, they're not developing M memory, mental acuity or resilience, but they are victims & entitled to something whatever they're brainwashed with on SM 🤔
