When I saw this book advertised on Instagram, I thought to myself: I have to have it. Then I saw the price - £150... Luckily, my birthday was coming up soon so I didn't have to wait long to add it to my personal library. The Book of Colour Concepts has two volumes and discusses colour theories between 1686-1963. The book is multilingual and contains text in English, French, German and Spanish. ...
Swatching A. Gallo's Naturale 36 watercolour paint set

I received a set of A.Gallo's Naturale 36 watercolour paints as a Christmas gift last year and I think it's time to swatch them. 🙂 This set is a "complete collection of exquisite earth, mineral and plant based pigments from the Mediterranean basin to the forests of Sumatra, from the mountains of Chile to the volcanos of Iceland" (www.agallocolors.com/shop/naturale-36). A.Gallo added new paints ...

Hello and welcome (back) to my channel! 🙂 In this video I'm swatching most of my Deep Deep Light watercolour paints from the rest of my collection, including some samples. It's difficult to pick a favourite from this selection, however I really liked lapis lazuli (Baikal), rosehip (which I believe is a mix of permanent yellow light and contemporary vermillion) and caput mortuum (PR101). While m...

Hello and welcome (back) to my channel 🙂 In this video, I'm swatching Beam Paints handmade watercolours which have been on my wish list for a while. I bought the paints from an art gallery / shop called Alchemist, which is located in Scotland. Beam Paints is an indigenous-owned, female-led paint company run by Anong Beam. In her own words - "Beam Paints is the result of a multi-generational lov...

Hello and welcome to my channel 🙂 I've heard a few people talking about Essee handmade watercolours so I purchased some to try them out. I chose the Impressionist palette 1 (there's also Impressionist palette 2) as it contains natural tones and some accent colours which seem like great mixers. I also purchased the Antique blues palette and the video is coming soon 🙂. First impressions: these ar...

@@PatLove3360 How exciting! I’m sure you’ll love it 🙂
Love your swatches! 🎉
Thank you 😊
How many DS colors are there?
12 - full Colours of Inspiration palette
@@thecolourswatchstudio only 12🙀
@@ohsfer11820 Yes 🙂 It took a while to get them mixed with each other.
Great book 👍
So which 3 color did you use for mixing? Thx.
I used primary yellow, primary red - magenta, and primary blue - cyan.
hi! How did you do this?
Hello! Sometimes you see mixing charts where one half of the colours is lighter. I took it a bit further and mixed three colours for each mix instead of just one. For example, if I mixed lemon yellow and ultramarine, I would have one square dedicated to the mix, however it would have three mixes in it - one closer to ultramarine, one in the middle, and another one for a mix closer to lemon yellow. After my first mix, I would dilute it with water and paint it into the square where the mix would usually repeat as I have same paints at the top and on the side. And do so with my second and third mix. I hope this makes sense :) I’m planning to make a video about this chart as a few people have asked about it.
@@thecolourswatchstudio yes please, make a video about it! It would really help. Thank you!
I love their colors and palettes, but their size pan make it so impractical, I like to carry my watercolors with me, but this one is always left out....
Yes, they’re more studio paints :)
Any plans on showing these in a longer video? I'd definitely watch it! ☺️
Thank you :) Yes, there will be a longer video, however I’m now playing with colour mixing so it might take a couple of weeks before I film it.
@@thecolourswatchstudio Sounds great! Thanks!! 😄
Hi Hannah 👋🏼👋🏼. A video is definitely a great idea!
@@awatercolourist Hi! So nice to see you here! ☺️
@@hannahthufvesson Always good to see you. Still in love with PY109?
That is a very helpful layout, showing each pigment's characteristics and performance. 😍
Indeed, everything I need to know about the paint is there :)
Hi Tracy 😃
@@awatercolouristHi AW. How are you?
@@TracyIndy All well, thanks! I just got some Nevaskaya Palitra White Night paints and I am having a lot of fun trying them out. The price is SO good, I do not feel precious about them. They are highly pigmented so I am still trying to understand them and avoid overloading my brush with paint. I am so very glad that I found them. The shop that stocks them has a very limited selection of open stock pans, though, and no open stock tubes. I hope they stock more options in the future. I must confess I am rather excited. White Nights was not on my wish list at all and I really was not interested in the, but the moment I saw them at the store I was very excited. I actually went to four different branches of that store on the off chance that other branches might stock different paints.
That looks pretty amazing!
Thank you :)
They are so beautiful! But what is the wrapping paper? I’ve never seen that before it looks almost like butcher paper
I think it’s some sort of Kraft paper, precious cargo is well protected while in transit :) Thank you for watching
More loveliness!
Just saying hi!
Thank you! Can't wait to get my hands on this set now. 😍
I hope the wait is short :) Thank you for watching :)

I'm happy to hear that you enjoyed the video, these books are definitely worth the purchase. Thank you for watching and your lovely comment 😊
You got it!!! 🎉
Thank you :)
So nice 💕

Hi, I have a few palettes that I have recently brought, the moon and Moods palettes, truffles set and Antique Earth set, they are stunning colours, that re-wet easily and just beautiful I will definitely be buying more from this company. They come delivered from Italy. 😊xx
Antique Earth sounds interesting, I need to look into this. Thank you for watching :)
Beautiful colour palette. I have yet to buy some Deep Deep Light but will do soon most definitely they are so gorgeous
Deep Deep Light paints are beautiful. Thank you for watching :)
A nice set to use on landscapes! 🙂
It is 🙂 Thank you for watching.
I want this!
They are worth the purchase :)
Green Earth Cool looks very strong for a PG23.
I agree :) I usually pre-wet the paints before using them so it would have been around 15-20 minutes before I got to swatch this particular green earth. However, just to make sure I added 5 drops of water to the paint today planning to test it in 15 minutes. I remembered about it 2 hours later and I can confirm that the colour is accurate - the paint also felt like gouache so this particular PG23 definitely likes a bit of soaking in water. I'll post a photo in Community just so you can see the results of my experiment. :)
@@thecolourswatchstudio Thanks!
I just found your channel, and I love it! Thank you so much for doing these…they’re so helpful! I don’t know if you’re concerned with lightfastness, but window-testing by Kim Crick & other artists have found Moonglow to be fugitive. 😢 It’s the PR177 (Anthra Red, iirc) in the mix, but Kim has a great video on how to mix your own on RUclips. (She also has a lovely website with loads of watercolor pigment info & a database.) I saw the notes in your description about Cascade Green, & some of the other colors. Rose of Ultramarine & Cascade Green both do marvelous things when given space to flow with more water. I had to paint a full landscape for a class using only one color, & was able to get everything from sky/lake/mountain/pine trees out of CG…it’s one of my favorites! Also, idk what the climate’s like where you live, but I saw the comment about not needing to pre-wet your paint…I live in a fairly arid place, & ALWAYS pre-wet my paints, of which DS is the majority. Especially the Primatek Colors (I love the Serpentine & Grn. Apatite too, btw); I’ve collected a number of them over time, & they can be extremely hard to use if I DON’T rewet them first. Though to be fair, all of mine were poured from tubes, so idk if the pre-poured pans respond differently over time. (Again with the lightfastness, if you’re concerned, don’t use Rhodonite…it’s in the try-it set of 6, and as fugitive as Opera.) Sorry for the long message. Thank you again for putting these up on YT! I’m excited to watch more of the handmade paints, especially from companies I haven’t heard of yet!
Hey, thank you so much for such a lovely and kind comment :) I'm happy to hear that you like my little corner of watercolours here on RUclips. I'm quite relaxed about the lightfastness because I paint for my own joy, but most importantly, all lightfastness ratings are for museum / gallery conditions and there are also other things involved in measuring it like humidity and acidity. Watercolours will always be prone to fading, especially when diluted with plenty of water. I agree, granulating colours love space and water - the more, the better. I live in England and the weather's been awfully boring lately with the summer still to arrive. I'd say it's perfect for watercolours as the paint doesn't dry too quickly or slowly. I never use a hairdryer to speed things up, just letting watercolour do its own thing. I also always pre-wet the paints as it helps me to get to the masstone easier, especially when using pigments like green earth PG23. Thanks again for your generous comment :)
Lovely! How nice to see so much variation in similar natural pigments. That Potter’s Pink seems more saturated than many, would you say so? ❤
I have a few Potter’s pink paints from different brands and I would say that A.Gallo’s version isn’t more saturated, it’s softer, maybe even dreamier than others. I usually pre-wet the paints around 10 minutes before using them which helps to get closer to the masstone of the paint 🙂 Thank you for watching ❤️
Gorgeous! One and all. 😍
They are stunning 😊
Hi Tracy! Glad to be seeing you more often 😊.

OMG is Gunjou genuine lapis or azurite??!?
I believe Gunjou is made from azurite. There are no specific pigment information available for this set, however the seller’s website states Gunjou refers to azurite, not lapis.
@@thecolourswatchstudio NOICE! do you get them direct from gansai or ? I have a set of Gansai tambi but im not sure if i can get the Gunjou one.
@@ps.6023 This set is from an art store called Choosing Keeping and I'm not sure who the actual maker of these paints is.
@@thecolourswatchstudio it's gansai tambi if I'm not mistaken and Im searching for the Gunjou like a madman lol
I now know what you mean. Gansai refers to a type of watercolours, in this case specific to the Japanese tradition. I’m not sure if you’ll find something like Gunjou anywhere else, but I’m aware that there’s another brand Kissho that makes gansai watercolours. If no luck, you might have to buy a set from Choosing Keeping containing this colour 😬
such a deep and beautiful bue!! you really should also do a swatch of stone ground's lapis, as well as prodigal son's, and della magnas fra angelico blue OMG soooooooooo gorgeous!!! all of these including MH dont need that much water to get the full intense blue like Vermeer and other old masters! people asume MH is too light or transparent because they over dilute it.
They’re all on my list 🙂I’m not adding new paints to my collection in 2024 so I’m gearing up for a big haul in 2025. Thank you for watching 😊

Hi. What is the name of the 3 primary colors on Daniel Smith Brand?
Hi Gabriela, I used hansa medium yellow (PY97), quinacridone rose (PV19) and phthalo blue (green shade) (PB15:3) in this video. These are the three pigments that traditionally would be considered as CMY primaries.
Yay! So nice to see some colors i’ve been curious about in action! Absolutely adore the pear color studies. 😊
