hi jess! could you share a link to view your APHA School Health & Wellness Section? would love to see your research in action, thanks!
Thank you for your interest in the SHW section! I don't think we have an "official" website (beyond what is on APHA), but you can follow us/join us on LinkedIn here: www.linkedin.com/groups/14422615/
Gotod info. Laughter is the best medicine 💊 hehe lol 😂that's cool, connecting with people online. #moderndayliving great you made a career outta mentoring young PhD in public health applicants. Prob developed from mentoring dumbshit jocky exes lol 😂 HAGO
Very informative discussion! I especially enjoyed watching it as my area of interest is in Reproductive Health as well. Just wanted to ask you, Dr. Jessica, is it still possible to share your application materials (CV and SOP) with us? I've recently sent you an email, hope you’ll check it at your convenience!
Yes!! I just replied to your email!!
Thank you so much, Jessica. This lesson was so interesting, felt like it ended in 5 minutes. That river example for public health definition is unforgettable. I look forward to seeing more videos like this.

Damn gurl, Harvard and Yale? Just running amuck through those elivy schools lol😂
did you receive more funding from ucla or yale?
@@justineisaacs7056 UCLA would have been more affordable actually since I would have gotten in-state tuition!! But I ended up working and TAing a lot at Yale to help me make things more affordable. I hope that helps!
Thank you, Jessica, for the tips. I think the summary part is often overlooked in statements. I also did not realize that my SOP does not have the "everything tied" wrap-up at the end.

People often mix up sop with PS,so hope its all about the real personal statement structure which mentioned on Harvard website. Also plz share your ps ,i have already written, want more structural change
Yes this is a common question I get, and a change since I have applied to PhD programs. A "Statement of Purpose" focuses more on your research experience and career goals, whereas a "Personal Statement" focuses more on how your life experiences have brought you to where you are now and wanting to pursue your career goals. I hope this helps!
Well done for this great discussion.

@@Ms.Robinson__ don’t freak out - YOU GOT THIS!! That’s so exciting you are about to defend and just know all the years of hard work will pay off!! Congrats!!
Also, I agree that Harvard professors are really nice and polite. I got a reply twice from a professor. even though he said they are encouraged not to have a conversation with applicants to give an even opportunity to everyone, he was very kind and wrote a very detailed long email. I appreciate that.
I'm glad they replied! Professors everyone are generally very nice and love talking to students, that's why they are in academia.
Thank you, Jessica. It is a bit scary to hear that your friend could not get accepted to PhD programs. It was great advice to apply to schools that are not high-ranked. I am getting my all recommendation letters from professors in my department. Is it a red flag? I think you mentioned in the video that you got your LORs from professors in different programs and classes. Good luck to everyone with their PhD application.
I think it is fine that your recommendation letters are from the same department if they speak to different strengths (or as long as they don't say the exact same thing in all letters).
Thanks
Your welcome! Let me know if you have any questions!!

Hello Prospective Graduate Students, I understand that converting your GPA from a 5.0 scale to a 4.0 scale is challenging due to the cost of using evaluation services or using inaccurate online converters. However, students that have used the free WES iGPA tool with testify it's time-consuming and energy draining nature. I am excited to let you know that I developed a method for effective, fast and accurate GPA conversion from a 5.0 to a 4.0 scale. For those that had already converted their GPA using WES, you can confirm my method by comparing with the WES result. Find attached the link to learn more and convert your GPA without cost and stress, just share to others and drop your comments in the comment section. This is a preliminary version as I am preparing its manuscript for submission to a peer-reviewed journal. I had to release this version to help all applicants because its application period. lnkd.in/d3pbqQfh Cheers, Oloche
This video is so helpful, thank you! I'm wondering, have you ever had someone not respond to your cold email? I'm having that issue, where nobody is responding to my cold emails. What do I do to make a connection?
@@yooskkitagawa I’m glad you found this helpful! Sometimes people don’t respond - professors can be very busy! It is more than okay to send a follow up email in case your first email got buried. I also have a template on my website jessthebest-gets-phd.blogspot.com
I think this changing the field in PhD and do different things than what you have done in masters or at work is a common concern for applicants. I think it should be normal because we usually don’t have many options in masters course. For me, I always wanted do something on maternal and child health but in my MPH my professor suggested me to be a part of the project on NCD. So my first-authored publication is on T2DM. Now, I want to do MCH in my PhD program but struggling to explain it in my SOP. Thank you for tips.
Thank you for your insights here!! I totally agree with you -- and I do think you can still pivot. Feel free to reach out and ask further direction questions to me at officehourswithjess@gmail.com
Many thanks for the informational videos. I also wondered how to transform the research experience I got in my MPH to the research interests I want to do in PhD in my SOP. How could this change will affect the admissions decision? Thank you
@@makhbubakalandarova762 you can definitely change or pivot your research interests, as long as you explain why in your SOP, and it would be good to detail any experience you have in the field you hope to go into. I hope this helps!
Thank you very much! This is really helpful
Thank you! I'm glad you found this helpful!

@@OfficeHourswithJess Welcome!
how many years of experience is required for mph?
Most programs recommend at least 1 year or more of public health-related work or internship experience before applying for an MPH. But this does not have to be a "full time public health job" and can be sort of a collection of extracurricular experiences, internships, research, etc. There is no hard requirement, it's more about how you put it together to tell your public health story!
