Gap seal install and performance on experimental aircraft

Gap seals made a huge control difference on my experimental aircraft. I couldn't find a lot of information on it so I hope this might help some of you.
2nd landing on water with Puddle Jumper floats

This was my second landing on water. Unfortunately had no camera batteries for the first but it was just as good. Very happy so far! Plenty of water to explore in southern Louisiana!
Mic Test - Bose vs David Clark

I've tried the Bose (with noise cancellation) a couple times and somehow my David Clarks seem to cut the loud engine noise better. Anyone have this experience with open cockpit and Bose?
Excalibur Aircraft: Dad's First Flight
Просмотров 16 тыс.7 лет назад
My Dad introduced me to flying 31 years ago with ultralights he flew off the water in front of the house. He hasn't flown in a while and probably never went this high...ever. He's getting used to it now.
Excalibur Aircraft: Prettiest footage to date - Marsh by drone

My buddy flew a drone overhead while I flew around it in the marsh. The footage from a DJI Phantom 4 is amazing!
Excalibur Aircraft: Flying the Louisiana Marsh

Brennan agreed to do the driving after only 3 previous flights riding. What a great day for a Dad! So far he's done better than big brother and Mom.
Excalibur Aircraft: Phil's video with music (shorter version)
Просмотров 4597 лет назад
A very nice guy named Phil helped with a lot questions when I first got my Excalibur. His wife said he was getting too mature for flying and he told me he always wanted to make a video. I sent him all my stuff before he sold his plane and he nailed it! Great job Phil!
Excalibur Aircraft: Flying in the clouds with Angels

When I saw how pretty the clouds were I just had to reach them. My first time that high (5,500 feet). It was really cool. I can't wait to do it again.
Interesting, only one rudder 🤔🇨🇦
note i also have owned this pane since 1973 paid 1800 for it with the franklin which is in the corner of my hanger
my 108-3 with the 260hp on it 3 notches of flaps on take off is good but i lso have wing vortexes landings i com ein at 45 mph with full flaps. i land in my back yard on my 3 acres.
After 6 years the tape still in good shape?
Very good!! I'm very surprised how well it has lasted.
@@LAOutdoors Did you use the 3M Transpore 3" tape?
I just bought a Beaver 550 RX ultralight on floats....can't wait to experience what you're demonstrating here. Awesome!
How is your radio clarity with that antenna on the bottom?
It sometimes has reception issues or static on the ground but always great in the air.
@@LAOutdoors I love the vid but do you ever turn right?
Yeah something is not right. Only 2 flap settings. It's hard to tell but the flap setting at 8:01 doesn't look right. The first setting is further down than that. I bet you have an extra notch filed into your flap stop track. Also what are those seats out of? I have never seen seats that tall in a Stinson.
The tall seats are by STC (which I do have.) I'm not sure about the flap settings. It was like that when I bought it. I have had several other people tell me they have three also. Not sure what it's all about but I measured and I do have only the maximum prescribed flap travel. I've been told it's an intermediate takeoff setting??
Some 108-3s have 3 notches of flap. That setting at 8:01 on the video is the flaps at the first setting and that looks like what I get on my airplane. 1948 108-3
@@stitch3338I'm sure there are some 108s with three notches. My point is that this is not how they left the factory. The manual only talks of three positions. Up, takeoff and landing. I also have a 48 108-3 and it is as described in the manual.
Gorgeous Stinson!
Dont like power off approaches?
I do those too. This is kind of the normal throttle back to xx rpm and pull power when the runway is assured. I have minimum power on the approach.
how cool would it be when your engine quit out in those marshes....?? Hope you had survival gear
There’s boats all around and my wife knows where I am. Hauling it out of there would be a different story. I’d take a ditching out there 7 days a week over an engine out over trees!!
How do you have 3 notches of flaps? Every -3 ive flown has only 2.
I've had this question before on the forum. It was like this when I bought it. Others have reported having 3 also. I have the STC paperwork and flap handle extension. I believe the third notch is part of the flap handle extension. I don't believe it adds any further flap extension, but just adds an additional 2nd notch inside the range.
Some "Modified" the flap to add another notch. Not legal but definatly many have been "Modified" @@LAOutdoors
I have a 108-3 that also has three notches.
😀 promo sm
Could you put the full "Phil Marcotte" video back up. I like your shortened version but would also like the full version.
Thank You for making this Brad - nicely done - very clear. After the first 50 hours, I came to near the same conclusion of 1300 rpm's and 65 over the fence, solo w camping gear depending on conditions and weight.
Thanks for the comment! It's nice to hear that someone else came to the same numbers as I did. I've come to think 65 is a good safe speed, but when pretty light and short field, I've began to push it to 60. But that's only for solo flight. I've had my wife with me at 65 and it felt good and stopped decently short.
Great video! Thanks! I've got 6063M with an o-470. +Droop wing tips, 31" bush wheels, VG's. 1600# dry weight. I think I'm getting roughly your same numbers. You've inspired me to get mine dialed in and written down!
Thanks! I’m glad you liked it. I’m learning more about my plane (and me) every time I fly it. I have a ways to go but I have a goal of learning how to safely fly it to its potential. I intend to make more videos as I progress.
Still have your Excalibur ?
I do, but I have to get some work done on the engine. Hopefully soon.
In all these Excalibur videos the passenger always seems to get a lot of wind - I wonder if an extra lexan fairing around the back of the pilot's seat would help with that?
THANKEW! We ordered the 3" tape from Amazon and installed it on the gaps in my partner, Michelle Goodeve's Pietenpol Aircamper. (She's owned it for 43 years). Did the elevator gaps first. Tail-up in 8 seconds before - up in TWO seconds after.. Did the rudder next. Much more positive directional control. Then we did the ailerons... WOW! The Piet went from PAINFULLY-slow response to snapping into a 45 degree in a SECOND! We've since learned that sealing the aileron gap on a Pietenpol (designed in 1929) is all but mandatory - and we can see why. Thanks so much for posting this video. The 3M tape works AMAZINGLY WELL and it's turned The Piet into a whole new airplane. Appreciate it. PS: You can see Michelle flying her Piet (WITHOUT gap tapes) here: ruclips.net/video/9VCZ80kbD54/видео.html
That's so awesome to hear! It was the same for me. Totally different airplane afterwards. It's been 5 years and my seals are still nearly as good as the day they were installed. Thanks for sharing!!
@fearwidge Did you use the Transpore 3" tape? How's it holding up after two years?
@@LAOutdoors Did you use the Transpore 3" tape? How's it holding up now after seven years?
@@rdwit659 Hey There. The tape was GREAT "proof-of-concept" & once Michelle realized what a difference it made, she started replacing the tapes with proper doped-fabric gap-seal. The Tail's done and she WAS going to do the ailerons this summer - but her engine started acting up and it took the last 3 summers to track down the problem. (Turned out they'd changed the fuel recipe and her 78-year-old engine didn't like it. GRRRR.). So it's running fine now, but we're running out of summer up here... Re the tape: As it was subject to the elements, the tape slowly started to crack and come apart - but the ailerons are still good enough for a few more flights. Her only "complaint" was that she had a lot of trouble getting the old glue off before putting on the new doped fabric. Oher than that - the tape never BLEW off, or came apart in flight - and it gave her the answers she needed to proceed. So, thanks again. Your "Tape Solution" REALLY helped. Cheers, Glenn & Michelle. PS: You can see Michelle flying her Pietenpol (& various other antiques) on our RUclips Channel. Search for fearwidge
The tail on the Excalibur sure flexes around is that normal with most ultralight type aircraft?
Really cool
I wish I was in the passenger seat.
Hope ya removed those weeds on rudder before you land on another body of water.
cool video 'editing dept. gets an A
What kind of distances are you seeing for takeoff and landing on the water with this setup?
Sorry pop, he's an idiot.
I found some 3" and that size is perfect on my Challenger. 3M makes it as well but it's Transpore instead of Blenderm. Exactly the same stuff. Amazon, 4 rolls, 10 yards each. We'll see how the aircraft handles.
@blyz_69 How's that Transpore holding up after three years???
@@rdwit659 everything is still just like the day I applied it. Flying wise, couldn't tell much difference but maybe it's there??
David Clark, much much better!!
I wonder why runway 18 has a displaced threshold. I've never seen an approach that un-cluttered.
The DCs are clearer, are they DC One Xs?
Nope..
This is just a microphone test.. DC is better yes.
David Clark sounds better
Thank you so much for your video I have been looking for this material for days...
You are in a fully open cockpit , That's why. Noise cancelling is amazing technology, But for that type of environment a passive is really the way to go.
DC clearer on this side and apparently to you too. BUT...DC kill me with clamp pain. i can/t use them. End of story.
The DC One Xs shouldn't give you that problem, lighter clamp force than Zulus, and better distribution than A20, sprung clamp.
@@musoseven8218 Totally correct. The DC ONE-X are better than the overhyped Bose A20
Smooth as silk. Enjoyable video. Question: I was watching another RUclips pilot vid (Trent Palmer) and he was 'waterskiing'; skimming his tires on the water at 50+ mph. Can that be done in a Challenger with amphibs? When I eventually get a Challenger, I would like to fly just a couple of feet above the surface without fear of doing a nose-over if the pontoons touch.
I'm a retire Bush pilot with 22 years in AK. (Umiat - PAUM) I honestly was touched being able to see your father sit back and relax whilst his son took him to enjoy a first flight. I've never flown an ultralight/LSA, but they do have an incredible draw. Again, thank you so much for sharing something so special with us. My father died in 1988 (I was 24...now everyone is doing math to figure out my age...54. HAHAHA Spoiler alert) and I had my first flight. I don't remember it, but I do have his logbook with the entry showing that. Blue skies to all my aviation brothers and sisters
It's not like doing stalls in a Tomahawk, but there's a bit of torsional flex in that tail.
I live in Livingston, Tx.... I'm looking at the Excalibur. If I get one, we should meet in the middle and do some flying. Feel free to call my cell 936-328-3454. Love your Excalibur!
I really enjoy your vid....

good times with pop, it don't get better than that !
Kind of a dick move to keep flying low when your passenger has said, repeatedly, that they weren't comfortably with that. Just sayin.
I. Live is possible to give me tour in your plane how much wood charge
Dad is having flashbacks of when you're training wheels came off. Thanks for sharing a memorable time many of us are unable to recreate with our dads.
Nice video
This may be due to the type of engine and prop; a typical lycoming with two blade prop has a lower frequency and headsets need to be designed with an assumed freq range in mind. Bose is a master of marketing though too, and I hate giving in to companies that lean heavy on marketing, which is why I'm being a bit stubborn in my headset shopping. I may end up with an A20 at the end of the day but I really want to test the DC one-X and Zulu3.
Hi, what did you choose in the end? Thanks.
Which David Clark model are you using?
David Clark crystal clear
Much clear with David Clark.
I would take that guy back and take one of the millions that would love a ride like that .
