    For us Texans especially: the gun laws are very generous in Panama. My current understanding is that as long as you carry concealed and not open, you do not need a permit or license to have a gun on your person and it is perfectly legal. But you should verify this for yourself and I am NOT an attorney. I believe Panama is safer. And, as they say, "An armed society is a polite society." Also, Panama has NO standing military, which I find comforting, and their police are not militarized - USA police seriously have armored cars and even tank-like personnel carriers. What could go wrong?

    Many thanks for your post! I recently returned from Panama, and had a fantastic time....beautiful place, and amazing people. My concern about considering a move there, is that with the numbers of expats relocating, whether eventually Panamanians will get sick of it. I witnessed that when I was younger and living in the VI.

    • @yourpuravida
      @yourpuravida 4 дня назад

      it is a great point! the same can be said pretty much anywhere. it is one of the reasons we advocate for persons relocating (anywhere) that truly want to join a community and support it, vs. just be an expat and live with our own in isolated areas... Thank you for your comments!

      It depends on where, alone or with group, and what you are doing. If you are drunk on the beach alone at 1am, not really ... but that is true in any tourist beach town anywhere in the world truthfully. You need to just consider your familiarity of your surroundings. I was once robbed in Florence at 2am because I was drunk and stupid and wandered down the wrong street. It's not necessarily the location as much as the circumstance...

    Great video. Thanks for your perspectives on Colombia before visiting. I recently visited Medellin for the first time in July 2024. My take on the city is that it clean, plenty of places to visit, and the people are friendly/helpful. At the same time as an expat please be aware of you surroundings at all time, Don't stay out too late and don't carry around expensive items or a lot money. And lastly please learn basic Spanish. it will make your travels a lot easier. Overall I make it sound like a bad place but its worth visiting at lease once. I'm heading back for a month, to visit my friend as well as taking in the culture and deciding weather or not its a right fit for me in the future. Safe Travels

    I just want to point out that Heredia isn't a suburb of San José. San José ends at the bridge of the Virilla river coming north from Tibas. Heredia begins with Santo Domingo on the other side of the river. The city of Heredia is the capital of the Province of Heredia, and it has a different mayor and a different City Council than San José. I know it’s a common mistake because the distance is so short, but we are talking about totally different provinces with totally different local governments.

    • @yourpuravida
      @yourpuravida 13 дней назад

      Agree it's a separate city and province, but so too are the hamlets around any large city. The cities that surround and feed workers to the larger are known as suburbs. We meant the comparison in this way.

    First world countries were aligned with the US and Allies, Second world countries sided with the Soviet Bloc, Third world countries were neutral. First, second, and third world categories had nothing to do with development, it was strictly a political designation. So technically, Costa Rica would be a developing First World country.

    In regards to bugs, I've been in different places in Costa Rica and for the most part, bugs mind their own business and rarely come inside - except for spiders who do what they want! 😆 There are some places near jungly and forested areas where there is more of a variety of bugs, but again they mostly stay outside. When in rural areas, I find that the bugs only really show up at night because when cows are your neighbors and your house is the only light source around, the bugs will come.

    • @yourpuravida

    Happy birthday and thank you for your videos! I thought of a few more benefits to having residency. 1. It's easier to get a banking account. 2. You can get discounts at National Parks (and other places, I think). 3. At customs, you're able to go through the shorter line for Costa Ricans. 4. I've read somewhere that seniors "ciudadanos de oro" get discounts on public transportation and various recreational facilities and attractions, such as national parks, botanical gardens, and cultural sites. As for a weird question, what are the rules about foraging and where can you find chanterelles?

    There are some things that people say are just fantasies. First, San José cannot compete with Panama City, Panama moves a lot of money, it has better infrastructure and development and the people are friendlier in Panama. San José is a town at the foot of Panama City, Costa Rica is like a village. Secondly, health, public health in Costa Rica is a disaster, appointments take more than 1 year to find a public sector specialist. Private healthcare in Costa Rica is expensive and the value for money is not good. Unlike Panama, which has better private hospitals, Costa Ricans travel to Panama for affordable medical care. San José and all of Costa Rica in general is more insecure than Panama, Panama has better security and less crime. In Human Development Panama is far above Costa Rica. Panama has less poverty than Costa Rica. Food prices in Costa Rica are absurdly ridiculous, very high. Many people who live in Costa Rica and visit Panama immediately move to Panama. I know many retirees who, after being in Costa Rica, move to Panama looking for tranquility and comfortable prices. The streets in Costa Rica are a disaster and the customer service is terrible. Costa Ricans do not have the idiosyncrasies to provide service. In Costa Rica, when they see a foreigner they want to scam them with prices that increase up to 4 times, the Panamanian is more honest and has a good culture.

    • @yourpuravida

    I was at my house a realized that my tire was flat. I told my landlord, he came over and took my car to the tire place and had them remove the nail and patch it for me. He brought the car back, I tried to pay him, and he refused the money. I needed to find a dentist for myself and my daughter. My neighbor researched ones near me, came with me and my daughter to check the place out and see if they had people there that spoke English. He did the same thing when I needed to find a vet for my dog. He literally took time out of his day to escort us to those places and made sure I was comfortable going on my own in the future. We needed to mail a letter and my daughter's new Tico friend came and picked her up to take her to the post office and figure it out even though he said that he had never mailed anything himself before. I can go on and on about the nice and helpful people here in CR. I love it here!

    We are planning our second trip to Costa Rica to visit the southern area. We stayed in Tamarindo in January and really did a ton of driving to get a feel for the area. We live in a temperate rain forest on the water in Vancouver BC and the plan is to spend 6 months in Vancouver 6 months in Costa Rica. We found Tamarindo more touristy and more of a dry terrain. We are looking at the southern part to visit to see if we like the more lush environment. We will be coming in November. We are planning on 2 more trips to see if Costa Rica is a good fit for us. Any recommendations for a really nice place to stay. Last time we spent a few nights in Sendaros and then another week outside of town. I am really glad I found your RUclips channel Hanks Jodi

    I really enjoyed the video. I agree with most of what you have mentioned, but there seems to be a pretty hard slant. For example, you are comparing Panama City to San Jose. The reason for the heat in PTY is the elevation, when compared to San Jose (PTY is 0 elevation and SJO is almost 4,000 elevation). I have spent a lot of time in Volcan, Boquete and David in Panama. The elevation is the key to the temperature and weather. Most places, once you get above 4,000 elevation, the heat becomes much more bearable. In Phoenix, AZ, it's 100 degrees in June at 1,100 elevation. In Flagstaff, AZ (at 5,000 elevation), it's 20-25 degrees cooler. I would imagine you guys are pretty familiar with that type of thing. Would have been nice to fill in some of these types of details, so it wasn't so slanted. Nature. Again, I think there is a pretty hard slant there. The beauty in nature in both places are amazing. There is only a few hundred miles difference between the two. I would agree that Panama doesn't preserve nature nearly as well as Costa Rica, but my travel in Costa Rica is more limited than Panama. I agree totally on the quality of life. Finding that special place is the key. If you travel a bit, especially internationally, you learn what you like and what you don't like. I agree on the ratings as well.
