Triumph Roadster Restoration Part 14: Possums, Wasps, Brakes, Horns and Lights
Part fourteen of the series documenting the restoration of my 1947 Triumph Roadster (TRD655).
The braking saga continues (yet again!) with this the first part of this video being filmed in February 2024 and the latter part in January 2025. In this video I remove and refit the brake master cylinder, which despite being rebuilt still does not function correctly. I then get bored with bleeding the brakes time and time again to no avail and turn my attention to the lights. I establish the problem does not lie with the switch, removing the wasps' nest therefrom. I then turn my attention to the horns, which are also suffering from a deceased wasp infestation....

Well done! Satisfying clean up and repair of the horn! I bet the master brake cylinder shows up in your dreams by now...
You may want to re torque those 16 wheel nuts after about 50 miles or so
what type of sand paper did you use, Like the grit?
Enjoyed your video. An old friend and longtime mg Td owner said , you can’t have enough grounds ,so I made sure every thing has a good ground and that really helped. Also old wasp nest removal was very helpful in your case…👍
Wow its been 11 months sense we seen the 47 Roadster! Boy time just fly's by! Maybe we will get to see it on the road in 2026? Are the wasps over there like here in the stated called mud dobbers? Kind of look like them?
Good to see you back!
nice video - many thanks
The seat belts are obviously a later addition and are not compulsary.
From what Land Rover series are the finally beak cylinders ?
@mycaseihc2238 They're Series 2 cylinders and Defender 90 shoes. The part numbers are in one of the videos, but I can find them for you if you need them.
Which cylinder from the Land Rover do you use now?
Very interesting videos! Thanks What are you use to clean? Is it break cleaner?
@mycaseihc2238 Kerosene is the blue coloured liquid as it is called in Australia
Done one myself. It’s easier if you take off all the chrome stuff before you start on the paintwork. Hope you get it fixed before the ivy comes back to life!
love the possum
@@geoffpace8981 Oh good - because it had babies last week!
great work and entertaining , the music is good too
the cost of machining and sleeving the original cyclinders may have solved all those other problems !
interesting ,good stuff
Good find ,this car will keep you busy , also I like your music
Can't seem to find the glove box part on their website, you got anymore info?
@@she3esh From memory I bought it off their eBay shop..might be worth a try? Otherwise they may have run out of stock I fear.
A bit late. But i just picked one up a few weeks ago, also red 89 SA manual. My console looks similar, not as scratched but faded and worn. In future i will work on it to restore it. Thanks for the insight.
My 1250 had 2 headlights but my Vitesse had 4 as in your photo.
Nice to see.I have a 1951 MK 6 Mulliner .I drive around in it most weeks in the summer.Cant see many modern cars surviving for 70+ years!
Thanks for the film , never mind the barrister ,their merely failed bad actors in a wig .
I would've appreciated some history of the car in question.
It was purchased new by a purveyor of ladies’ undergarments who used it to tow a trailer displaying "the wares"....
Time for a loving restoration. Wood and leather are overdue.
Lovely video thanks for sharing 👍.
Clearly my mistakes about the seat heater and Silver Dawn engine displacements has caused some excitement. Many thanks to all who have pointed it out so clearly. Who knew that the heater was so effective that even a mention can make people hot around the collar...
Wonderful car and nicely presented. Best from Switzerland from an owner of a 1951 Mulliner MkVI and a 1953 R-Type. I have owned every model up to 1996 of RR and B and came back to MkVI and R-Type, manual gearbox change both, because they are the best of all after War models! 😊
The heater under the seat was for the whole car. Complete BS that it was a seat heater. You weren't even thought of when I had to sit in the back seat freezing while the front passengers got a modicum of heating.
Relax it's just a free video. I am in Canada and you don't know what a cold back seat is.
Friendly correction: the engine capacity for the Mark VI and Silver Dawn was the same. Only the carburettors were different. Also, you are referring to the interior heater, it is not a seat heater, as the handbook will confirm. Lastly, the car should be started in second gear, again the handbook will confirm that.
Thankyou for persuading your neighbour to let you drive their car and for sharing it with us. I always appreciate your depth of knowledge on the history of the marques as well as their interesting mechanical features. Your use of language suits the car perfectly, great video.
Great video!
Well I see you haven't touched the car for 6 months Or at least didnt post any video on it. How about an update or at least something?
@@TheLostWrenchGarage Patience dear boy...patience!
I love all models of the MGT cars and have owned many of them over the years. My first car was a MGTD given me in a very poor state back in 1969. However I went the last 35 years without a MGTD. So as soon as I could I purchased a very nice MGTF RHD project that is mostly dismantled and is awaiting restoration in my workshop. Soon after that I found and purchased a gorgeous fully restored MGTF about 7 months ago. Most recently I purchased a very nice MGTD that had been cosmetically restored some years ago but still presents very well. So now I own three of these classic MGs and enjoy driving the MGTF and the MGTD as often as I can. I am 70 now so there is no time to lose.
Love the old steam train 👍🏻
If it's a mk2 than all the old on bits were chrome, head lights
Amazing how easy the plug unscrews when you turn it the right way!
Please introduce your cute pupper!

Just got done watching the whole playlist on the car!! Glad to see your back on the car getting it fixed again. I truelly wish I had a car like yours! I would be wrenching on it as much as I can to get her back on the road! Myself I am doing a Triumph Spitfire 1500 and have plans to have it going by May. Just subbed and cant wait to see more! Cheers!
will be interested in whether or not that is enough movement in the piston to do the job. i suspect that it isn't. but hoping it is. BTW, didn't see any adjustment mechanism for the shoes...curious.
No, alas that certainly won't be enough movement to engage the shoes properly. There is still plenty of air in the system, and I'm working on getting a rebuilt master cylinder as a safety measure. Well spotted with the lack of adjustment mechanism - they are supposedly "self-adjusting" according to Triumph, but in reality this just means they bind all the time! No wonder the Roadsters had a reputation for hesitant performance...
i too, housed my first car, a '61 MGA bought in 1970, in an old wooden garage. the garage was most likely built, initially, to shelter the family carriage. as the adjacent lean-to looked a lot like a horse stable. ...always a process getting it in and out.
youve got the most british accent ive heard. But we in England dont have possums were are you from??
Very nice videos. I am urgently looking for a fuel tank for a Triumph Roadster 2000 (1948/1949). I don't know where else to look or ask. Does anyone have an idea?
I assume you have tried the Triumph Roadster club? Otherwise I would have a metal fabrication shop weld one out of non-ferrous alloy or stainless steel.
Many thanks for the answer. Yes, I have already asked the Triumph Roadster Club. Then we can probably only have the tank made by our body builder.@@Rust_in_Time
Nice video! I do have a soft spot for the Triumph Roadsters
Good to see you back, but gosh you make it hard for yourself.
Alas, the poor quality cylinders didn't help!
Having done the job a few times over the years I would have taken the opportunity to check the King Pins & Bushes and Wheel bearings
Nice to see you back
Brings back memories of when I did this on the 1969 GT 60 I had at the time. Really improved the shift!
Hi, can you tell me where you got your rebuild kit from? Someone has used gasket seal and thread lock on mine. Thanks
I actually just made the gaskets myself with the correct gauge gasket paper. I'd suggest writing to the club if you need a full kit but usually fixed jet carburettors don't require as much maintenance as say SUs do. Best of luck!
What happened with the Roadster?
Your manifold drain is dripping on the starter motor. Not good idea
Wow! A car wash with a pressure washer.
