White Moon SATB - Julia J. Evans
Premiered at my senior recital, April 10, 2024, in the Ballroom at Southern Virginia University.
Text by Carl Sandburg (1878-1967)
There's mystery and magic in this poem by Carl Sandburg, as the moon is both ever-changing and ever-constant. I love the simplicity and contrasting imagery in Sandburg’s words, and had an incredibly fun time playing with note clusters and time changes in the process of setting this text.

Premiered at my senior recital, April 10, 2024, in the Ballroom at Southern Virginia University. Text: Traditional folksong A few years ago, I happily chanced upon a 1963 album titled "Folk Roots, New Routes" by English folk artist Shirley Collins. Featured in that album, "Pretty Saro" is an English folk ballad that died out in England by the mid-1700s, but later gained popularity in the Appala...

Premiered at my senior recital, April 10, 2024, in the Ballroom at Southern Virginia University. Text by Marina Tsvetaeva (1892-1941), transl. by Ilya Kaminsky & Jean Valentine This piece was written as a parody of Johannes Brahms' "Abendständchen" from the collection "Drei Gesänge, op. 42." I was incredibly inspired by the way Brahms treated two separate choirs as single contrapuntal voices we...

Premiered at my senior recital, April 10, 2024, in the Ballroom at Southern Virginia University. Text: John 14:27 This piece was written as an exercise composing "in the shoes" of Thomas Tallis, an English Renaissance composer who lived 1505-1585. I love and admire his anthem "If ye love me" and wrote this as a parody, drawing its text from the same New Testament chapter as Tallis' work.

Composed Fall 2022 mvt. 1: a lungful of fog mvt. 2: stepping over blue ridges mvt. 3: morning piece of toast I wrote the three movements of my "String Quartet no. 1" to depict snapshots of my experiences as a student carving out my own life in the Appalachian mountains. Movement one, "a lungful of fog", evokes a feeling of traveling through a thick mist enveloping every part of body and mind. D...
