Thinking of purchasing machine, but thought I'd better get a home ready for it ahead of time. Here I design and build a bench-top type stand on casters. Along the way I learn how to use my new Porter Cable Dovetail jig. I made many errors, but eventually achieved good results, and learned much along the way. Enjoy!

Hello everyone. This is a short video of me and my wife, Millicent, riding the 2nd part of the Spruce Railroad Trail, which is part of the Olympic Discovery Trail (ODT). We only rode about 11 miles of the 18 (one way). The last part was on shared road so we decided not to go there. Very beautiful and big fun riding with a partner. Enjoy!

Wood Knot Carpenter No. 17 - Moxon Vise
How tall are you Dave?
5 feet, 11 inches. Inseam is 32 inches..
I think it was the way you rode it, your feet should be able to hold you up while you sit on the bike.
That would have been helpful at the point of the crash, but when the front wheel became rutted and I applied too much brake is when I went down.
Great review thanks for the advice. Is that the 17 or 19 frame?
Mine is a 17" frame. I'd say do not get the 19" frame unless you are at least 6' 2" in height.
👍
Get well soon brother
I'm working on it! Thank you.
Just got my 5 star today. Thank you for the C3 setting recommendation. Had a couple sketchy take offs.
Wow! You are most welcome. So glad the information of useful. Since I've been practicing I've come up with an entire "system" for making sure my take-offs are smooth and uneventful. You'll come up with your own I'm sure. Just go slow. Good luck and have fun. Happy riding.
Nice review - Parts 1 and 2. A little late discovering then. Can you adjust the magnitude of the assist for each PAS level with the torque sensor? And, if so, comment or show your PAS level settings? On a cadence sensor the magnitude adjustment is usually speed based - or more advanced percent of standard rated motor power (often called power or current based as opposed to speed based.
Hey! I have not seen anywhere inside the set up screens where you can set the actual percentage of assist for each level. That is true for some systems, but I'm not aware of it on the Dual Star. I believe it's just 20% per level, up to 100% on level 5. THowever, the C4 and C5 settings most directly control power output. C4 controls how much power is delivered from the throttle. 0 = full power; you have options of 1, 2, or 3. I keep my C4 setting on 2. Thus I will never get 100% of available power from each level when I twist the throttle. It's safer for me, as this prevents inadvertent wheelies off the line. C5 controls the rate of power "ramped up" (power over time) the motor receives when you turn the cranks. You have values of 1 through 10. I keep mine at 6. Again, I don't want my bike shooting out from under me when I'm not ready. Even at these settings I can get my front wheel off the ground if I crank the throttle and stomp the pedals from a dead stop. Amazing for a bike that weighs 108 pounds with a 190 pound rider on board. On level ground I can easily attain speeds of 35 mph. My bike is not fully "unlocked". However, in any scenario, the amount of assist you get on each level setting is directly controlled by how much pressure you apply to the pedals. That's what I love about a torque sensor. So even though you might be in level 1 for instance, you will not get all of the potential power from that level if you are not applying enough pressure to the pedals. When going down hill in level 5 at 30 mph, you will get very little or no assist by turning the pedals. Gravity is doing the work. You would have to crank the pedals very rapidly and with power to get any assist in that scenario. The large 52-tooth crank up front helps. Also, I've noticed also when using the throttle on the handle bar, the pedals are taken out of the equation. That knowledge came by riding and experimenting. When you twist the throttle the pedals are electronically disabled from delivering power. When the throttle is released, the pedals kick back in. Interesting! So, the throttle will deliver 100% of what ever power level you are in, while you get only mechanical assistance from your leg muscles on the pedals. Hope I answered your question. Thanks for chiming in.
@@daveyJ213 Thank you. I am not all that sure there even is - in anybody's torque sensor setup - where the assist level can be changed by the owner. Cadence sensor - yes - as mentioned either power or speed based per PAS level. Torque base assist is based on a potentially changing pedal (torque) rider input regardless of the PAS level you may be in, but also very dependent on the bike gear you may be in which affects your pedal input. Generally bike controllers have no idea which bike gear you are in though some of the bleeding edge combo mid-drive motor/gear units do. I guess my thinking is that torque sensor pedal assist per PAS level based on a constant changing signal (essentially real-time measurement) of the rider's pedal (torque) input is implemented as an algorithm set in the controller firmware which does no lend itself to a "simple" change to a single metric (e.g. percent) by the rider.
@@petetoemmes6673 Yeah, I agree - what gear you are in affects out power output. I've noticed I can increase my speed just by switching to a higher gear while maintaining the same cadence and wattage output on the cranks. Your comment about "potentially changing pedal input" rings true. That has presented itself as a bit of perceived jerkiness and constant little speed changes. The bike may speed up and as a result I am putting on less pedal pressure, which the system instantly adjusts for by limiting power. I've learned to master it over time. Thanks for the information. Do you have this same bicycle? What are you riding? Torque sensor?
Oddly I only have a broken analog bike. Just doing research. Like the ECells Step Star, Wired Cruiser, and Magicycle Deer 2.0 which has both sensors and can be switched on the fly - plus a local dealer.
You cannot use a basket at all with that front fork, even with removing the light
Yeah. They sent the basket, as it was part of the original order. But when I upgraded to the Dual Star package the basket became unusable because of the front forks. It's sitting in a box in the garage.
Is there a weight limit on the suspended seat post?
I don't know specifically. I suppose if too much weight was put onto the seat post, it would stop functioning properly. Let me try to find out.
hi David, wonder if you consider collaborating on promoting bike racks. If you do, please let us know your e-mail so that we can discuss more details.
Collaborating? I have no idea what that means or how it's done. You can obtain my email address from the "About" section of my channel.
Dude man your seat post is to high it’s not safe drop it down be a man your a small short dude man stop being silly 🤪
Alright! Now that I've been out on a couple of test rides since healing up, I have lowered my seat post a bit. It feels weird; don't like it. I have to rely on the motor more. Thanks for chiming in. Take care.
Dude man I told you the first time get a trained squirrel 🐿️ to hold your camera 📸 they have springs in their legs 🦵
Squirrel are few and far between. I'll see what I can come up with.
I just bought this rack. Thanks for great video.
You are most welcome.
Why you have this when you have trikes???
I was intrigued with the entire concept of modern e-bikes and wanted to experience one for myself. Each type of vehicle (2-wheelers or 3-wheelers) have their own sets of pros and cons related to performance and ride ability. My trike is unable to accomplish what the e-bike can and vice versa.
How's the bike still treating you??
Good. It's ready to go, Just waiting for more rideable days to happen.
WOW so sorry to hear about that! Looks like quite a crash! With the illness that followed too. Just WOW!
Great video David! Glad you're on the mend! I am interested in a drop-post as well... I hope to follow your path of product discovery
Hey! Haven't purchased the drop seat yet, as I'm still not riding. In the meantime I will lower the suspension post until I make a decision. Got the bike back in riding form; now I'm waiting for my leg to fully heal up. Let me know if you get the drop seat post and what you think of it, especially installation concerns.
Are the e-Cells rims tubeless compatible?
I remember reading some discussion about that. I think they are, but I am not positively certain. You should post that question on the Ecells Facebook group. I bet someone there would know.
@@daveyJ213 Okay but I don't have Facebook.
Replace that screw with an Allen bolt so that you don't have to use a different tool than the rest of them which are probably allen bolts, too.
Do mean on the shifter?
@daveyJ213 Yeah.
If i wanted a subaru id just buy a wrx
WRX?
@daveyJ213 I was just making a dumb joke cuz their cars are often blue with gold rims

I purchased the ECells Step Star, but it was not delivered as ordered, and after numerous emails and phone calls, things are still not resolved. Their website claims "unparalleled customer service", but it hasn't been unparalleled in a good way...
Hmm... thanks for the information. Actually, I'm very surprised the Ecells team hasn't made things correct. David Cleveland, the owner, makes such a stink about his customer service and quality of his product, that he literally kicked me off of the Ecells Facebook page for asking a question about the bike which he took the wrong way. God forbid it inadvertently gets implied that his customer service and product quality is not up to snuff. I'd stay on their case until they make it right. Are you within driving distance to Pahrump, NV? I'd be pulling into the headquarters driveway and stay until the problem gets resolved. Good luck; thanks for letting us know what's going on.

Thanks. Getting better daily.
good to see ya movin around again!!!!
Hey, I am glad that you are feeling a lot better. Also glad you are putting your bike back together. On my bike, like yours, I am upgrading my bike to an 8-speed. So I will have to change my rear gear, shifter, and derailer. I have done this many times, so it will be easy for me. I am glad you are feeling better. I highly recommend a seat drop post, you will like it. I am 62 and it has been a life safer for me.
I'm pretty sure I'll end up investing in one. I think it will make the bike much safer. At age 74 I'm not thinking I want to endure any more accidents like the one happened.
Great job David so nice to hear that your doing better take care 😊
Great job David, Very helpful tips changing out the shifter and threading the shifting cable through the cable housing you are doing a fine job with your tutorial narration, Thank-you David for going to the extra efforts to help others with your repairs and adjustments video.
Hey, Ricky! You are most welcome, and thanks for the encouraging words.
“Wasn’t walk mode but more like trot mode”, you made me laugh out loud. Thanks for a great review!
You are most welcome! Glad you enjoyed the video.
YOU will feel 100 percent better with a dropper post and safer!!
It’s too bad about the bike and you but it’s also important to tell people how it happened. I have the wired version and I have made mistakes that I have learned from. What happened?
Glad to hear you are OK brother and the concussion wasn't too bad, I've had one that put me in bed for over a week, and didnt feel the same for years. Good news is those shifters are 15$ on amazon. I use an old IPhone X for ebiking purposes and ive got the shattered screen protector as well, par for the course. Nice work spray painting the rack, I agree, couple blasts of paint to fix that, no need to buy a new one unless welds are breaking or something. Ebike racks are notoriously crappy aluminum, usually. The edge of sidewalks and pavement seems like a very common way that people fall down, i treat them like a curb!! Get well soon brother good to hear you are OK
Daaaave. Sorry to see you got hurt but thanks for making this video. Thank goodness you had the helmet on. I bought a full-face Smith when I ride mine now. These bikes deserve alot of respect....they're VERY big, heavy, and Fast. A mod that I'm looking at right now is a dropper post. It allows proper seat height for powerful pedaling. But, it also allows lower center of gravity in technical paths AND makes it MUCH easier to get on/off the bike and stop the bike without having to pop off the seat. No more tip-toes at a stop. Reduces the argument of needing a smaller bike or getting a step-thru design frame. Just saw a video where a guy installs this in his Dual-Star. 'PNW Cascade Dropper Post Review - My Favorite Ebike Mod!' Awesomely Rad. Check it out when you can....I'll probably be installing one on my Dual-Star. Cheers Brotha! I just got mine 2 weeks ago and hope to put out some content soon.......Amazing Bike! 978 views 3 weeks ago
Thanks for the great information.I will definitely check out video about the dropper post. It's adjustable on the fly, I take it? Yeah, glad I decided o ride with my helmet that day. Other times in the past I did not wear it. Will always for now on. Thanks for chiming in. Take care - be safe.
Just checked out the PNW information. I think this is a no-brainer when dealing with the power and size of the Ecells Dual Star. Thanks again.
Glad you are OK, good luck
Thank you, Terry.
Sorry to hear of your accident. Your initial review is what helped me decide to get a Daul star myself. I went with a 19 inch model, but I now realize that the 17 inch frame would have been a better fit for my size. I too, took a nasty fall on my first ebike. My front wheel lost traction on some sand, and i went over the handle bars, face planting on the pavement. Broken nose and chipped front teeth among many contusions. The bike wasn't rideable, so I had to walk about 3 miles to get home. Im lucky it wasnt worse because back then, I didn't wear a helmet! I also had a minor accident with the Daul star. I lost balance, lifting my leg over the seat to get on when the bike fell over on me bruising my thigh and butt cheek. Be careful, this is a big heavy bike and it can be a little hard to handle in certain situations. Anyway, I hope you recover quickly and stay safe on the road. Thanks for all your videos.
Great video, Dave, hope you’re mending so you can go riding again.
So when dont order a torque sensor what would you get other wise
You would get a cadence sensor. A cadence sensor simply detects if the cranks are turning or not. If they are, then you get full power of what ever PAS level you are on. If the cranks are not moving, you get no power.
China to Nevada.e cells has a video of them loading bikes into a fed x truck to ship to people
Also regarding the rim maybe you have to get a black one later.maybe do a Google pic search
It might be useful to know where you could get a rim if you did completely destroy one of your rims.
Glad you are healing Where would we buy a rim? E cells has no parts for sale?
That is a really good question. So far Ecells is only a retail operation, and they have no satellite stores or any way to provide parts for customers. I had to order a replacement derailer and a shifter directly from China. I don't know where you would buy a replacement rim, especially a gold one like the one on my bike. I'd like to know the actual name of the company who manufactures the bike in China; maybe they can provide some information on parts. As customers we really need that.
Sorry to hear about your accident Dave, hope you are recovering and thank you for sharing all the wealth of information on bike repair. Take care my friend.
Thank you for your kind words, Walt. I'm slowly getting better, but still in pain and using crutches to get around in the house. My doctor said he thinks I might have actually detached some thigh muscle from their anchor point near the knee cap. That explains the big hard mass of muscle contracted into a ball in the upper right thigh region. Good grief! I'll keep you guys posted.
Going up a hill on paddle and fifth, what is the best paddle to be going up a hill?
You got me.
OK, maybe I didn’t say it correctly if I’m writing up a 45° hill what straddle should I have it in from one to seven and will that help me get up the hill?
@@rickeyalexander6719 I'm sorry; must be my poor command of the language. If I am on a hill that steep, then I am in 2nd gear (maybe even 1st) on PAS 4.
Im so glad you weren't more seriously hurt as we get dont heal as fast as we once did. About twenty years ago a buddy and myself were riding the bike path along lake shore drive in Chicago on ten speeds and I briefly turned my head to see where he was at, mind you we were traveling pretty fast and my tire hit the edge of the pavement between the raised pavement and the grass and I lost control and fell sideways onto the grass and as I was lying there he was so close he couldn't stop and he rode right over me and fell also. Needless to say, the soft grass saved us both from serious injury, only my pride was hurt. We did have to walk the bikes back home, laughing at each other. Needless to say, now I ride always aware of the pavement edge.
Man, I wish I had had some grass to fall onto. I finally went to the doctor two days ago, because the swelling is not going down. Still can't bend the knee. After examining me, he ascertained that I might have actually torn quadricep muscles from their anchor point on the knee cap. I have a big ball of tight constricted muscle in the upper right thigh and I can now definite feel some pain in the knee. Good grief! Might need surgery; waiting to see. Thanks for commenting. Yes, I guess caution is needed whenever one is out riding.
David, great video!!! Is that bike in your video a Wired E Bike?? Thanks again, Walt
Hey, Walt. No that is the Ecells "Dual Star". Happy you enjoyed the video. Take care.
Oh, hey, Dave. Didn't recognize you off the forum. Are you feeling better? I just got my rack
Hey! Yes, leg is starting to loosen up, I can bend it a bit more now. Still generally in a lot of pain, but way better than I was. Online research has indicated that it may take as long as 13 weeks to heal from the type of injuries I sustained. Just as well, the rainy season and snow is on the way; I'll be ready for this coming spring.
lol your opening statement is priceless!!! may you heal well sir and once fully recovered enjoy the bike once again :)
Thank you! I'm getting better; I can bend my leg now. Still swollen and painful, but better.
Glad you weren't hurt worse. Looks like the bike came through it amazingly well. I've had a couple of minor accidents so I've been pretty fortunate so far. Just scrapes and bruises. Praying you have a speedy recovery.
Thank you. Still swollen and painful to bend leg too much, but getting better daily.
