The New Farm
США
Добавлен 1 июн 2023
In 2022 we decided to move our whole farm; 2 humans, 5 dogs, 40 sheep, and 3 chickens, to a new farm. One that hadn't seen livestock since the 1970's. The New Farm documents the process of making the land a farm again, making the house our own, and anything else that happens on our adventure.

I am LATE posting this video! I found the editing of the sheep work to be really hard. It was a super frustrating few hours. I made up for it by getting a lot of canning and pickling done, the green beans were a lot more cooperative.

OK! We are back from a break and I am eager to get some late season vegetables planted. I am planting a new bed of strawberries from runners produced in the existing bed and then two new beds of cold hardy veggies. I am prepping the beds, adding drip irrigation, and getting the seeds in the ground.

Apoligies for assuming you were in Iceland. Very late at night I watch Sheepisly Me Canada and following a new video there YT listed a bunch of other recent Sheep videos. I saw one that was from Iceland and clicked on it already half asleep and my phone sometimes plays the next video from the one I clicked on and that was your video. Until you mentioned coyotes in this video I still thought you were in Iceland. Serves me right for amuming half asleep Take care. 🕊🌻🐑🍁
Hello again! Thank you for sticking with me! I absolutely figured it was something innocent like that and couldn't think of a way to say otherwise without potentially hurting your feelings. And I WAS really impressed with the way they handled the shady bankers in 2008! 😁
Hi lovely lady, new subscriber excited to support you ❤❤ so happy I came accross your channel
Thank you so much!
So sorry to hear about that. Dog you have guardian dogs? That could help a lot with predators. Or a few donkeys or Lama's.
Hello! Thank you so much for watching! We have always relied on really good fences to keep everyone safe, so we haven't needed any kind of guardian animal, but stay tuned for an exciting addition in January!
It’s impossible to know or foresee everything that can go wrong. There are so many predators, diseases, illnesses, and just plain old random chance occurrences - you can’t prevent or protect your flock from them all without wrapping them in bubble wrap. Which would just cause different problems anyway 😝 When things go wrong here, I try to cling to the knowledge that I’m doing the best I can with what I have. I can’t ask for more of myself than that. I learn, I change or adjust the best I can and just keep on keeping on.
So sorry for the losses and difficult sheep year in general. Hopefully things turn around soon for you guys!
Thank you, I really appreciate your kind words. We are lucky in so many other ways, but the animal stuff really gets to me! I'm sure you know that as well as I do 😀
Congratulations on your anniversary! What an amazing job you guys did with the construction and putting everything together!
I think I would prefer the Snow White animals since they help clean the house!
I’m glad you made your vlog public. So far, I’m really enjoying it 😊
Thank you! And thank you so much for your comments!
I think the hard times and the emotional ups and downs resonate with people. Mostly because anyone who has experience with animals knows that it’s not all sunshine and daisies. It’s a path filled with constant curve balls that you just have to navigate as you go.
So true!! Over the last few years I have learned how much power there is in vulnerability. I always wanted to be so tough and capable and make things look easy, but I realize that being truly tough and capable is doing it anyway, even though it's hard. Farm RUclips is full of some really great examples of people sharing their real experiences. It's so inspiring I had to join in!
If you want to watch some channels with experienced shepherds, I have learned (and am still learning) a lot from Sheepishly Me and Ewetopia Farms. They do things very differently (from each other), but if it’s absorbing information you’re after, they would be my top picks (partly for that reason). I just have a little flock of 7, myself, so I’ll never have the experience of those with flocks of 40 or hundreds or thousands, so I learn where I can 😊
What's your thoughts on free choice single mineral?
Hello! Thank you for watching! I am totally just learning myself, but my understanding is that when you're grazing, free choice mineral is your only real option? (We have always used one of the premixes from Premier1 free choice) If you are talking about a mineral supplement meant for all livestock, I had always heard / read that those are inappropriate for sheep, but I know people who use them without problems. However, I'm trying to keep my ewes productive for a long life and I have found with other animals that what works when they are 2 year olds doesn't necessarily work when they are 7 and I think that's what's happening on our farm. I am learning that so much of keeping livestock is knowing your animals and your land, that you should take anything I say with a big grain of salt - trace minerals optional 😉
Where are you in globe?
Yes the strawberries look delicious! Your garden looks good but the temperate and wet June and July are fixing to be dry and hot hot hot so it will need lots of TLC! I went to Costco today and when I walked past the peaches mmmm but they were just a little over ripe and plenty bruised from all of the people that picked one up like I did. A big bowl of strawberries peaches and bananas sounds Devine!
Enjoy your vacation.🎉
My Uncle's were always having to go get a bigger tractor to pull the tractor out of hidden holes. Do you have any wild preditors for your sheep or lambs in Iceland besides lost polar bears?
Not quite sure where you are, but I know the Rip van Winkle bridge was near our route from summer camp on a dairy farm near Coxsackie. Beautiful land. I follow Sandi and Tara, so here I am, retired in Mexico , Baja California. 3 years since I left NY. I'm disabled and collecting rescue pets. Thank you for the beauitiful Hudson valley. I love Catskill, and Woodstock!!
Hello! Thank you for watching! I hope I am half as entertaining as Sandi or Tara! The farm name came with us from our old farm which was in the Catskill watershed. The origin is kind of a funny story, at first we rented the old farm because I wasn't sure how Chris was going to fare in such a rural setting. There was a weather beaten sign in front that we thought said Rip Van Winkle farm so we started calling it that. YEARS later we found out that it actually said Ramshackle Farm, but by then the name had stuck! Rescue pets in Baja California sounds like a fantastic retirement plan, thank you again!
Awww let it drink and get full!
I say that because I’ve got many sheep channels and they always let the little ones drink all they want
Hey! Thanks for watching! We treat different lambs differently which may cause some confusion. Lambs who are being bottle raised because they are triplets or their mothers aren't producing milk always get to drink until they stop. Lambs who have a mother with milk that I am just "topping up" to be sure they are full might get a set amount based on the amount that I've mixed up (which is based on standard guidelines for lambs by weight). It's OK for those lambs to be a little hungry so they will learn to nurse off their mommas sooner.
I really liked your video. Thanks for sharing all of the cute sheep! I'm sorry that you had a migraine and I hope that you don't get any more for a long time! Take care, I'm looking forward to your next video. ❤🐑
Thank you so much! Looking back, this was a tough time migraine-wise, but it's just something that I manage. I'm happy to report that I've been feeling much better 😊
2:48 see how that ewe kicked that lamb off is bc they probably biting teets I would WEAN EVERYTHING ALREADY WHAT YOU WAITING ON….Also I would take the nipples down because in their mind they getting milk from those nipples
That was another great video, thanks for sharing! I understand migraines bebecause I get them too. Take care and stay in good health! See you in your next video. ❤🐑
Thank you so much! Take care of yourself too, migraine is awful. 🤗
15:13 They dont need a mother nomore OBVIOUSLY an NO NEED TO BE SAD WHAT FOR BECAUSE THEY CAN EAT ON THEIR ON AN DONT NEED MILK NOMORE PERIOD BECAUSE IT LOOKS PATHETIC FOR A OBESE/OVERSIZED LAMB ON MILK
Also IT LOOKS RIDICULOUS FOR A 50-60LB LAMB SUCKING A BOTTLE AN SUCKING THE EWE DRY ALSO AN IT DONT MATTER HOW LONG THEY CRY THEY CAN BE WEANED AT 6WEEKS ONTO CREEP WHICH IS WHAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN NOW TRANSITION STRAIGHT TO JUST CREEP
Why haven’t you weaned everybody yet they are big enough to wean especially if their biting you which mean they got teeth to chew the food and not on teets because a lamb can destroy a Ewes udder..How would you want someone biting your nipple for 3-4 months
They definitely ain’t poor looking they need to learn how to be without their mom
You also have 0 views but 2 thumbs up plus me. Funny about Ewe hiding from her baby, but probably not funny for you to have to rescue crying lost lamb.🐑
YT cheats. I did a thumbs up before I watched the show then after checked to see if I counted but it was ticked but read 0. So I unchecked it and it showed 2 thumbs up but when I checked it it read 0 again instead of 3 so I left your 2 and wish YT would stop playing cruel games with all their numbers. I ran it from 0 to the end so it should have registered. They do this more often in US Presidential election years. So sorry.
Thank you, that is so nice of you! I do notice some YT weirdness for sure! For instance it says that 100% of my views are by men aged 55-64, and that definitely doesn't seem right... 😀
At first, I thought you meant you were going to tag the lambs on FB, like they all had their own FB page, lol.
We try to keep them off FB, but they do all have RUclips accounts. We need all of the subscribers we can get! 😜
If their biting you an eating hay common sense would be cut the milk out thats why they got teeth…Would you want somebody to bite your nipples an draining you
10:08 so if lambs escaped or being rogue why would you continue to give milk when they are obviously to big for milk
Hello.Iceland, I have been watching a Canadian sheep farmer and YT is sending me sheep channels. I was born and raised near St Paul Minnesota. Our farm areas were settled by Nationality in a project by John J Hill and the Catholic Archbishop. My Grandma is first Generation Norwegian American from Leikanger Parish in Sogne Fjord Norway. I didnt know she spoke only Norwegian until she entered school. She passed when I was age 9 in 1960 and lived in Russell MN. She had 9 kids and took in her sisters 6 boys too. She had her father's Farm until the day she died. Four of my Aunts married farmers in surrounding towns. I did hear that she went to weekly card games with the "Icelanders" That made more sense when I discovered she spoke Norwegian. I read about the early European settlers and then the climate got less peaceful so ships stopped running back and forth for a while putting a woman married on Iceland but returned to Norway but needed verification she was married which wouldnt be possible for at least 20 years when shipping resumed. I was a fan of Iceland standing up to the international banksters operating badly in Iceland 8 or so years ago. Thanks for letting me see and hear farming there.
Hello Peace Seeker! Thank you for sharing your grandmother's incredible story, and thank you for watching! I have some strong farm women in my ancestry as well, I hope I'm doing them proud. P.S. I was impressed by Iceland's handling of the banking crisis too!
I just love your videos! ❤ 🐑
OMG, thank you so much!! I had kind of a tough day today and this totally cheered me. 🥰
If the lambs don’t suck from the machine 1st time let them go without eating until they get use comfortable with it because if they can suck a bottle they can drink from the machine
1:47 why don’t you let the lamb suck the nipple until they get milk that’s nasty
If they wanna steal milk it would be cut off weaned transitioned to creep feed…When lambs get teeth they bite nipples i wouldn’t want nobody biting my nipples
Also you wean by weight not age
Them lambs need to be weaned they be enough to also start transitioning them to creep feed then wean them after 6weeks you can wean
11:20 Is Lamb, a boy or girl⁉️
Hello! Thanks for watching! This is a ewe lamb, so a girl! ❤
This reminds me of A Christmas Romance (1994)
Hi I’m form pakistan i need a job please give me a job format I have experience Goat for me labour work experience please help me I need job I am give you a good work please please help me please
Who shears your 🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑
Hello, Thanks for watching! The sheep are in the process of shedding their wool which is why it looks like they went to a blind barber 😀 Anyone who hasn’t shed all the way will be sheared later this month.
You need some Sandy Brock in your life. Ewetopia Farms is really good too😊
Hey Brian, thanks for watching! I do watch Sandi Brock and a couple of other amazing sheep you-tubers! Otherwise I would have never imagined that non-farmers would find day to day farming activities entertaining. Who knew?? 😀
