Knapp Farms
Добавлен 9 ноя 2020
Small part time family farm in North West Indiana that does a little bit of everything from raising beef cattle, and honeybees, to growing corn, hay, soybeans and even a little bit of saw milling we always have a project going. We use almost all old equipment so there’s almost always a repair going on as well.

This is how I feed my cows to this day.... Mix corn with gluten and they love it
Think it had 266 hp
Maybe put a 300 Cummins in it
That’s got to kill you at the pump !😂😂😂😂
I'm a child of the forties and fifties. We used to grind corn for cattle, but not with a mixer. Just ground it direct into truck or wagon and then hauled to feed lot and hand scooped it into feed bunks. Also used a lot of cottonseed cakes along with a good amount of alfalfa. Those were the good old days!
Did that a lot when I was younger. We had a IH grinder mixer.
I was on the farm from age 12 until age 20. I am now 79 years old. I remember with fondness those years in Iowa. My life took me on a different path for these 59 years, but I cherish those 8 years with my 4 brothers and mom and dad. Thank you for sharing your videos. I hope you keep making them.
What’s the yeast for? Why do you grind feed so far in advance? Why add salt instead of using free choice salt? I’ve got a degree in animal husbandry in nutrition and just trying to understand your feed mixture. I would advise not grinding so much in advance. Once you crack the kernel and expose the surface to the air oxidation starts taking place and you lose feed value. Thus grinding so far in advance you are losing nutritive value of your mixture. I grind for my animals by weekly and I don’t like it but my feed usage is such that that is what works
Yeast helps the digestion system brake down and utilize every possible bit of the corn. we have free choice minerals and also give them a little extra salt. I have to grind in advance due to working a full time 50-60 hour a week job off the farm so don’t always have time we try to keep the feed less then a month old. Thanks for your comment hope this helps explain why we do what we do
I'm not being a jerk, but it seems like alot of work, an time, couldn't you just buy feed already made, and has any one put a pen to it money wise, the fuel, the supplements, the corn, the planting the corn, and see what it cost from field to feed bunk
Yes on paper it does not make sense to buy feed you will end up with as much in the cow as it’s worth we can grow the corn for less then we can buy it we don’t have the trucking fees for such large quantities of feed only the small amount for the few supplements we have to purchase as well as most feed producers add things into there feed that we would not feed our cattle and our customers as well as us don’t want in the meat we eat every day
I love what you are doing but looking at the price of grass raised grass finished beef is bringing. It's hard to understand why someone would do it the old way?
Have you ever tasted grass fed beef ours is so much better you wouldn’t believe it came from the same species of animal and that is what all our loyal customers want we charge a fair price can feed them out faster and cheaper then grass fed so we can charge less and make about the same profit
We did that mix for years. But stopped using soybean meal several years ago..
Do you use something else for added protein now or did you just cut it out completely?
@knappfarms usually oats..I stopped adding it and buying feed that had any in it..after reading several studies and 4 or 5 from the NCBA that links it to the onset of Altizmers disease. Has something to do with adding to and altering the protein in your body. Ground cob or crushed is all we fed calves for years. Even fattened our beef with just crushed corn
Just curious do these studies say the soybean meal causes Alzheimer’s to just the one consuming the actual soybean meal or is it second handed passed through the beef to us
@knappfarms the way I understood it it's through the beef to us. It messes with our proteins and levels in our brains ..that's the way I read it
Your grain truck is not very old i graduated in 1981 and i am young yet
At 400 bushels that axel has to over weight
That's funny Indiana has so many international town.
😂 Egypt was actually a mile out of the way but we decided to go over and hit it just for the story
Decent drive to Parr? I wouldn't mind a 2nd truck like that. My Grandpa at one time had a Ford F800 with a 400bushel Parker.
Only 12-15 miles depending which farm we are hauling from but I would say from leaving farm to back on farm it’s a one hour round trip without lines at the elevator and I really like this truck no hydraulics to worry about but is a little top heavy when loaded going down the farm lanes gets a little tippy
Definitely a good truck story.!
Like the world traveler part when you picked up that grain truck !! Gonna miss ole Dingleberry, as will many of the locals.
Did the guy from Poland buy the truck from a farmer by valparaiso
I believe somewhere around there he just said north of where he picked up my grandpas truck
@knappfarms I just asked because the truck looks like the one I saw sold at olson auction in winnamac in the mid 90s and a neighbor bought it also the truck was setup to pull a wagon behind it
@plowhorse could be the same one i also watch all of olson auctions but wasn’t around that long ago lol
Really neat background on that truck 👍👍. ADM over here at Logansport has the same card scanning setup.
👍 i had a few good ones. But i always lets them go. They all complain to much 😁
great seeing you on the farm. what do they say, “3 or 4 degree of separation “ it is a small world and you can see that in transactions that happen in your life! great story! especially finding the orange tag on the keys! hope it is all going well. wishes for a good harvest.
So far all is going well no major issues just some down time due to rain but no major setbacks
ground ear corn is the best cattle feed
I like your videos down to earth ! Where in indiana do you farm ?
North west Indiana near Fairoaks farms
Loved it hard core farming what built American
Angel looks like she retrieved some ducks
What kind of grain box is that?
I’m not sure only labels on it are for the sureloc tarp
That was one freaky, mutant corn stalk.
It might have been a sterile plant.
What happened to the truck you bought last year?
Needs work I didn’t have time to get done before harvest
👍
Good video! Glad you got some ducks.👍
Salut sunt un băiat din România și te urmăresc de ceva timp îmi place ca faci agricultura cu utilaje de modă vechie, și eu sunt de acest concept îmi place agricultură cu utilaje de colecție, îmi place ce faci!
how is the corn this year? hope you mak out well. do you have all the needed feed ready? things always break at the worse times! at least you had a spair on hand to replace the blown tire. good luck, be safe , good luck hunting!
The ear corn for feed we typically get done last but now that we are into December we are almost done and have plenty of feed for the cows thanks for all the comments and sorry on the long wait to reply
@@knappfarms yes ,no has the time that they want! I am just happy for the reply. do you only get a few good years out of a intact bull? the prime is only a few years or does it depend upon. the animal. great videos thank you for sharing them! I do enjoy seeing the work on a farm.
I had that happen to me before, where one cornstalk is taller than the rest, not sure what causes that. What happened to your other grain tuck?
Good video 👍🌽. I know what you mean about running on the off row, we run a 12 row planter and 8 row head. How’s the new auger working out on the L2?
I have a saying that could be apropriate "THOSE THAT THINK THEY KNOW IT ALL ARE ANNOYING TOO US THAT DO "
570 RPM's on the motor not down the PTO.
Thats a lot tractor for thatcorn picker
Never ran out of horsepower though
Can you put hay in the grinder?
I don’t know if there are any other differences but I think the only thing we would need is a hay feeder for the hammer mill they have a much larger hole for the hay I think it would get plugged up in our small grain feeder neck on this one but would probably grind of fine with the larger one
I Really enjoy your videos. Also nice to hear your easy going attitude. Great to see you working with the equipment and getting the job done! Keep up the good work. 👍
This old gas powered IH fleetstar will cost a lot less to maintain than a modern diesel equivalent with complex emissions control systems. These also have more character than today's vehicles
I don't know if you check videos this old but I threw up one about picking corn and I had no idea there were so many experts on the subject.
Hard at work! The Gleaner did a great job, of course. Love that new truck. Can't wait to see more about it.
Put drier sheets where ever you don't want to have mouse damage 😮
Typical I do but must have forgot after last harvest season
Nice looking hopper on the international. Also that M2 sounds good. Keep it up
We use our M2 for corn only. Should be starting in about 7-10 days. Corn is at 19%.
Mine was running 18% today just wanted to get the field open so I will continue harvest next weekend should be about right on then
that has to be difficult to harvest at night with limited lights. you have to really know your fields. do you think you will make out ok this year? good harvest? you are always tied to the weather! for good or bad! any new varmint videos? hope you got to bed at a good hour!
Yeah definitely have to know the field plenty of light to harvest right in front of you but have to know when things are coming up my field is looking good think it will yeild decent just prices are so low
Seems like sometimes you and Derek do your best work in the dark !! Have a good one.
Seems like when I get the most done just wish the elevator was open at night so I could haul without traffic
Good video 👍👍. We finished beans this past Friday.
That truck was very well taken care of. Very nice and clean.
Yes it was
Those rose bushes look kind of like Multiflora rose. It's an invasive plant around here in Maine. Look it up. They are no fun to deal with if left unchecked.
