Air Force Dental Assistant: Q and A!!
I want to clarify something I mentioned to avoid confusion. If you join as an officer, dental assisting will no longer be an option for you. There are different jobs for officers versus enlisted members😊

How I got a medical job in the AirForce
Просмотров 9 тыс.4 года назад
is tech school hard?
Do you need civilian qualification(s) to be able to get a medical job in the military, specifically Air Force?
Do you need a dental hygiene degree to work as a dental asisstant in the air force?
Does airforce take cardiac technologist?
You mentioned your husband was enlisted when you joined. I'm considering joining the air force as well. (husband is also air force) Could you do a video on how being dual military has been for you guys? BAH? I've heard mixed things on housing taking both of your BAH if you live on base. Worried about being stationed at different bases. We also have children. In another video you mentioned you made dean's list, I'd love to know about that too. Thank you so much!
Hello her husband here. Dual military overall has been great. We have always lived off base but from my understanding with dual military on base housing will only take one of the members BAH. Usually the Air Force will try to pair you both at the same location. I know some folks who have been stationed at separate bases that were relatively close. We also have 1 child and he goes to the on base daycare. Dual military have high priority over other members children for a spot at the daycare on base and the pay for your child’s care if scaled from both of your pay stubs.
If you have graduated and have an associate degree in ultrasound diagnostic imaging and also have passed the ARDMS certification/registration. And now you would like to enlist join the Airforce, would it be possible/ can you get a guarantee job in the medical (diagnostic imaging) when joining enlisting in the Airforce? Thank you for your advice
I’m going in as dental assistant Is it worth it to sign a 6 year or 4 contract??? Thanks
I'm joining the Air Force wanting to do Dental assistant! I'm so happy I found your channel! Definitely helps me get ready. I have had so many questions and you answered them all! Thank you for posting these videos on it. Btw you are freaking gorgeous!!!!
How is it going I’m currently going through the same lol
How long weeks long was the tech school?
It's 84 days I do believe. 😊
I went through in 2019 as a retrainee. Fun course with good instructors.
Do you do speciality assisting as well, such as Endodontics, Orthodontics, etc? I am an RDA and I’m thinking about joining the Airforce.
We do it all!
@@Aaaalliyyaah thank you so much for your response, will you be making an updated video soon? 😇✨ also thank you for your service! 🙏🏼
I have a question for my daughter. she is going to finish high school in 2024. She wants to be a dental assistant. Does she need the associate degree in dental hygiene before qualifying to be the dental assistant? or she just have the high score to get the position and study the A.S. during in the active duty?
You do not need anything but the basic qualifications for MEPS and appropriate ASVAB scores for active duty dental assistant.
I am an army medic wondering if it would be easy for me to a medical job in AF?
for us to be a dental assist i have to have a 2 year degree or a bach?
You do not.
Can you make a more in depth video about Tech school as far as the program itself. & about how prior services are treated.
I plan to make more videos soon, I’m slackin.. but life! I can’t speak for how prior services are treated as I’m not one.
CONGRATS, on achieving that which you hoped to achieve. You are truly blessed, as we all are in some way form, or fashion. I recently was volunteering and worked alongside a prior 20yr AF vet who talked to me about her role as a diagnostic imaging tech. She praised it very much and I was wondering with you and your husband being in the USAF would you by chance know any Diagnostic Imaging Techs in the USAF, who I might be able to speak to regarding that career path ? Thank you for your time and video input, be safe and God bless 🙏 😉💪
Absolutely! What is a good contact for you? Email?
@@Aaaalliyyaahhello , I know you’re video has been up for a while but I also was wondering if you know someone I can speak to about diagnostic imaging tech as well . This video was very helpful . 😁
How long after joining u start hygienist program their?
Hi you don’t automatically go to hygiene school when you’re an assistant. The assistant has to apply to go to hygiene school after so much time in grade IF they wish to do so. So there is no timeline for that.
How long after did u apply for it
@@simplybuiltgarage I haven’t applied yet.
I have my phlebotomy license, can i use it for the air force
We do have airman who work in the lab and draw blood. Great question for a recruiter!
@@Aaaalliyyaah thank you so much
Can I PM with a question?
Of course!
I have my Rda certificate will it help me get a dental job ? I want to be a dental lab tech.
Great question for a recruiter! It is dental, but it’s not assisting. So I’m not sure if they could still use the competency booking.
@@Aaaalliyyaah i just graduated high school and got a job as a dental tech (: Ty for replying
I completed BMT and tech school as a DA as well! The process was smooth, very fast-paced as you mentioned. I’m trying to become a dental hygienist on the civilian side, do you think we become registered DAs with our experience through the military?
Congrats and welcome! You can become a hygienist through the Air Force and a CDA. To do hygiene you have to be accepted into the hygiene program and meet those requirements. For CDA (it’s almost like RDA you can look up the differences.) you should’ve taken the IC and radiology danb tests. If you passed both all you need is chair side and you’ll have your CDA!
Hi. What the difference between dental assistant and dental hygienist? Later on when transfer back to civilian - Can you become a dental hygienist thru the Air Force 4Y0X1 ? Thank you
Dental assistant assists a specialist or general dentist. A hygienist does deep cleanings, and focuses on oral hygiene.
You can become a hygienist through the Air Force.
@@Aaaalliyyaah thank you Aleah for your reply ❤️. What job (4Y0X1)? But it said Dental Assistant? So how to become Dental Hygienist thru the military/ the Air Force? Thanks again for your advice.
@@plmkon2892 you have to be an assistant and then apply to hygiene school if you want to go through the Air Force’s program. If wanting to just go to any school for hygiene and not the program the Air Force provides, you can be any AFSC and use your tuition assistance or GI bill.
@@Aaaalliyyaah thank you Aleah
When it came to application and ASVAB test for that dental assistant how long was those ?
Probably about 3 months.
@@Aaaalliyyaah oh wow
Question ? How long was your tech class ?
48 days!
I’m planning on trying this afsc but do I have to have any experience in this afsc? I haven’t been to school in 10 years and also my biggest problem is is this afsc’s tech school very difficult? I’ve been in three jobs in the military but yeah I wanna know the difficulty of this tech school
Not difficult at all and don’t need experience.
Thanks for the quick response! I have no experience in the medical field what do ever but thanks again for the quick response
Does that military offer dental hygienist training? Also, were you able to pick your first duty station?
The military does offer a hygiene program, yes. You make a dream sheet of 10 bases and rate them in order. They may or may not give you your first choice or even something on the list. It’s all about manning and where they need you.
Hey queen I am looking into becoming a dentist assistant but want to do it in the si force I am 28 is it too late for me and if not how do I start
The best way to start is to talk to a recruiter!! Let me know if you have any additional questions 👸🏽
Do you have to have any experience to go into this? Like no schooling at all. Would I learn everything in Tech?
No experience in this career field is required. You will learn what you need in tech school and in upgrade training at your first duty station. With that being said, experience does help get you this job but nothing can guarantee you securing this job.
@@Aaaalliyyaah okay. because when i was looking at the air force website under qualifications it said “Completion of a minimum two-year American Dental Association-accredited degree awarding Dental Hygiene program
@@Aaaalliyyaah would that two years be during my acting duty or would it be 2 years of tech
@@tywilson2594 I know exactly what you’re talking about. I have no idea why it says that, very misleading.
@@tywilson2594 I’m sorry can you clarify what 2 years you’re referring to so I can answer your question.
Is dental assistant available for Air Force reserve?
I believe so.
Hi, I am a civilian dental assistant and had a few questions.. What rank are you when you finish tech school? Does prior assistant experience help with your rank?
If you sign for 4 years but have enough college credits, you will be an E-3 after basic. If no college credits, and a 4 year contract you will be an E-1. If no credits, but you sign for 6, you will be an E-1 out of basic and in tech school you’ll put on E-3. In short, no, experience doesn’t help with rank, college credits and the type of contract you sign for does. Thank you for watching!
hi! I’m currently a dental assistant in the state of oklahoma and I have 48 college credit hours. I dropped out bc I didn’t know what I wanted to do in school. I love dental but I want to go back for hygiene! I was thinking about going the Air Force route. Would it make any difference that I have a experience in dental assisting?
Hi NEENiE! Thank you for watching. I think my other video “How I got a medical job in the Air Force” would answer your question! Let me know if you have any other ones :)
if i do basic training and stay in reserves, will i be able to be an RN in a civilian hospital?
I think as long as you do what you need to do for your commitment in the reserves it doesn’t matter what you do occupationally outside of that. However, I am not in the reserves and not 100% sure so I would ask a recruiter. Thanks for watching!
Can i get into the dental hygiene program if I have a different job in the military or do I have to be a dental assistant same question for being a dentist thank you!
I don’t think they would send you to hygiene/dental school if it didn’t pertain to your job just because it takes away from your job that you’re supposed to do in the military. So, I want to say no. But I don’t know that 100%. I think if you wanted to go to school for either, it would be on your own time outside of your job in the military.
I took a medical terminology class as well as an anatomy class in high school, would that count in anyway towards getting a medical job in the AF? or would they only consider taking people if they have college level class experience?
Good question! I don’t have the answer to that but if you’re really interested, I would talk to a recruiter so that they can answer that in the best way for you.
Did you ever find out from a recruiter if those prior schooling were enough to get your preferred job choice?
Hi thank you for making this video, I graduated from high school 2 years ago and I want to join the airforce. My brother in the airforce recommended me to do dental assistant, and when I looked at website, qualification said something about having to do 2 year study for dental hygiene program to earn certificate. Is that necessary? I was thinking I could just enlist right away but should I study in college and get certificate first?
That actually is very confusing and has always confused me. You do not need that to get this job.
This was a tremendous help and cannot think you enough, thank you dearly!
I’m so happy it helped!! Thank you for watching!
I’m switching AFSC’s! I’m hoping to get dental. Do I need to be an assistant first before I can can be a hygienist?
Fingers crossed 🤞🏽 and yes, I believe you do.
Can you become hygienist right away or do you have to start off as an assistant first?
Good question, yes I believe you cannot enlist as a hygienist.
Hi, I have 4 questions 😇 I was wonder how much the pay is, how often are you allowed to work, if there are RDAEF’s, & if you could please touch on specialty dentistry and if you can switch from general practice to Endo or Ortho etc.
You can google enlistment rank pay, it all depends on what your rank is/ how much you get paid. And I’m sorry can you clarify, do you mean EFDA? Expanded Functions Dental Assistant? If so, no. Not in the Air Force. As a dental assistant, you will assist all procedures probably at some point. Right now I assist a prosthodontist.
Do you know anything about dental lab techs 4y032? I'm leaving to basic on march 8 and i serously can't find any recents videos about the job and reviews about it lolol.
We have a lab here in the clinic I’m at and I have some friends that are lab techs! Lab techs are so chill. I know their school is much longer than ours. About 6-8 months? A lot of lab techs love their job.
Is my dream to become a lab tech too 😊 Im a hs senior and thinking of getting my associates before enlisting. Good luck !
Hi I’m considering joining. Quick question being that you started out as a dental assistant prior to joining, did that automatically make you senior airmen? I’m just curious on what rank I would be if I’m already a certified dental assistant coming into the AF
Unfortunately, no one can come in as a senior airman by just joining. You can however, come in as A1C. That’s dependent on how many college credits you’re coming in with. Or.. another option is if you sign for 6 years your date of rank (A1C) will be when you leave for basic and you’ll get A1C pay when you graduate tech school.
Hi, I love your videos. I just have a question.. if you already have your infection control and radiation safety certification do have to retake it in tech school?
Thanks for watching! That’s a great question. Not 100% sure but- I would assume no. If it’s up to date and still valid.
Im a CDA with X- ray certification can I enlist in Airforce Dental program??
Hello 🤍 if you watch my other video “how I got my medical job” it gives some direction on your question and how I got my job. If you have any other questions please reach out!
My spelling isn’t the best will I still be OK in this MOS
As long as you meet the requirements for the Air Force at MEPS and ASVAB, that’s what matters.
its so rare
How do you shred to be a hygienist?
You have to be in good standing in your career be at least a 3 year SrA, and get picked up for the hygiene program.
@@Aaaalliyyaah I’m thinking about retraining into dental (if there’s slots available) and becoming a hygienist
@@Reviewerguy1228 that’d be awesome! Good luck to you 😊

Do you have any medical education background before you join the Air Force?
I had prior experience and took a dental assistant program prior, yes!
No
Paper trail doesn’t really explain why you’re trying to say. Can you say be a good Airman and compete for quarterly awards? Most people would understand that. 😊
Most people that aren’t in the Air Force would not understand that. 😊 I just started fully understanding quarterly awards myself.
If I’m already a certified dental assistant and I score high enough on the asvab is a dental assistant job guaranteed or no?
Unfortunately no, that wouldn’t guarantee you becoming a dental assistant.
