      Hi There. Many thanks for the comment. Thats great to meet you. Yes I bet its interesting to see it on a Dinghy, albeit a big one!! It does work quite well. I have since tinkered with the settings a bit and if you set the steering to be a bit slacker then it works much better. It also works much better on the sea where the conditions are always a little more consistent than on a lake. To date I haven;t heard anyone else fitting to a Drascombe Lugger but it has worked for me. One thing I have also done this season is balance the sails and use the Simrad much more and that improves performance of it markedly. I htink in a Dinghy you're giving the Simrad a big test as the boat is so twitchy compared to a yacht!! I do find that the unit is quite sensitive to voltage levels. With Li-ION battery I previously had, the voltage can drop to lower 11V ish levels and this causes the unit to click a little. With the LiFePo4 battery where the voltage stays above 12.6 it's much better. I guess when this was designed it was designed for lead acid batteries which have a similiar voltage range to the LifePo4. Only thing I need to make for it is a waterproof cover!!

      @SailingWithDave that's lovely to hear, and some interesting points about the battery. I haven't worked for Simrad/Navico for many years, I think I designed this a good 25+ years ago, bit I'm glad to see it's still made and used

      Thats our "Rasie 3D" printer. Ironically its cheaper than the Ultimaker. It's not so good at prototyping as the Ultimaker is much quicker at 1 piece, but for manufacturing it's brilliant. The tolerances seem to be better on it too. Its dual nozzle and its party trick is that it can "Mirror" print, so you double the speed of your parts printing the left nozzle miror prints the right one. Quite cool to see that working!! Its very reliable. I can count the failed prints on one hand.

    • @SailingWithDave
      @SailingWithDave 10 дней назад

      Well, there are 2 options on slipways here. The one into the canal and then out via the lock, but that slipway is actually broken and no boats can use it. There's a bit stpe down onto it where its sunk. The dinghy club next door are very friendly and have a slipway but not for the Lugger. They do have some bigger boats on their standings but maybe they don't launch from there. In any event the sailing here isn't for me. Its very tidal and has a strong current. I really want to get out onto the sea so ideally would have some kind of storage or mooring or something like that near to Angelsey. I have seen the guys racing here and on the beating leg they are hardly moving!!

      I grew up in Whitby and that silhouette is pure coble. No traditional sailing cobles have a spray deck. I love Dave's innovative ideas though but I'd rather see some innovative tent solutions or maybe an inboard electric motor conversion. What's the point in solving problems that don't exist? My experience of sailing small boats is they rarely get swamped due to water over the bow. More likely over the stern in a broaching situation.

    • @SailingWithDave
      @SailingWithDave 14 дней назад

      Hi Fibber. I'm sorry to hear tha, especially from someone who I know has been a subscriber for so long. Let me explain what i'm doing. I wanted to just change things up a bit for a number of reasons. So I have been experimenting with using a different format. The sea adventures I did last season actually out perform all other videos on a monthly basis. Even my latest 4 posts per month are usually outperformed in views by these videos. So I am naturally trying to copy that kind of format, because it works and also because it's interesting to do too. I'm not hell bent on grpwing the channel but have found over the 3 or 4 years of doing it that it has to remain fresh to a degree and also it has to not be a chore for me or I will just stop. So I have been trying to make the format a bit more like that. Don't worry, I think I do this for a few more weeks and then go back to the old format, its an experiement and we'll take a look at if it worked. Judging from the analytics I have seen already, not much is the answer to that!!! These videos are considerably harder to edit so I am quite happy to go back!!! I am also extremly interested in any views people have, so I am very happy to hear too. I think after 3 or 4 years you do have to make some changes or it just gets boring. But I am open to ideas all the time.

    • @fibber2u
      @fibber2u 14 дней назад

      Thanks Dave. Intended as constructive criticism no more. I understand you wish to grow creatively and will never please all. To enjoy you’re site I'm willing to compromise: such is life. The question I ask is: is the popularity of such as you describe to do with subject matter or any music (or weird "sounds", not something you do yet)? How much is in spite of the latter rather than because of it? Everything from Radio to TV etc has not only music (which is one thing and can be brilliant when done well) but strange sounds and drumbeats playing as people talk and I wonder who actually likes this? Most people may simply just have the ability to ignore it. It's not a new thing but it is great to find old TV which does not have it. When my hero is walking in the woods I prefer to hear birdsong, not a whale in pain. Screaming swifts yes, that mediocre female never. The call of the wind, water and gulls does it for me on a boating video. The issue is now the ability to do "sounds" is universal and so it is becoming increasingly common on the internet. I wonder who actually likes it? I'm mostly talking about "sounds" but I make the point NOBODY EVER in music has achieved universal popularity: in fact ALL are minority taste. I define in music bad taste as somebody else’s idea of good taste.

The side ones would allow you to leave the fixings on the boat but you could remove the panels fully so for mooring or even on a trip where you just wanted to get rid of them you could. An option middle zip would allow you to open it up more easdily for anchoring etc. You could make the zips dual opening so you could just crack open one side a bit for the rode or line?

    Enormous waves? Click bait

    • @SailingWithDave
      @SailingWithDave 17 дней назад

      Waves, like sailing itself is extremely relative. None more so than to the experience you have. So, I think at the time, and with the experience I had, the size of the boat and the excitement levels I had simply sailing with another Mirror Dinghy all made up to the fact these were indeed enormous waves to me at that time. I've since sailed through 1.5M waves on the sea, in the Lugger and the first time I did that I thought I was going to die. I have since done it a few times without thinking too much about it, so it's all relative to the storyline of the channel and relative to the novice sailors its aimed at, so I hope that explains it a bit better. I get a bit excited, maybe a bit passionate at times but click bait...no, not very me!

      @@SailingWithDave I'd love to learn how to sail in bad weather conditions. It would be really fun.

      @@Jono1982 Well there's plenty of that on the channel if you look for it!! I think learning to sail in bad conditions is really good for you but in order to do so, you can limit your losses. What I mean by that is I have sailed Lulu in 40+mph wind on Lake Bala, because there waves never get anywhere near large enough for that to be a hassle, there's no current or tide too. So this means you only have to worry about the wind! Sailing in high wind and also really no wind has taught me a lot about sailing. High wind as it gets the boat nearer her limits, you really get a feel for her and know where she'll go to. In low winds however, especially on lighter boats like the Mirror, it teaches you how to get the most of the wind. You have lots of time to play, tinker etc etc, its likt everything is slowed down. I wouldn't sail on the sea in half the conditions I do on the lake because a sustained F6/7 on the sea would bring large waves, and also probably some nasty overfalls in places around Anglesey!!!.

    any chance you can share where to get the 3d printed hank locks? Thanks for the video

    • @SailingWithDave
      @SailingWithDave 17 дней назад

      Hi Mate. I made them myself. I have 2 versions. The red ones that are flat and clip over the hanks or the ones that a slightly larger and have a hole in them allowing for a jib downhaul to be used with the jib. I was going to get a little shop set up and charge like £10 for a set of them bit haven;t got round to that yet! Do you sail a Mirror? I have sent a few few packs out to various people over the past couple of years in exchange for some feedback on their usage but have literally never had anyone come back to me!!!

      @@SailingWithDave Awesome, yes I have #70995. I was thinking of the same issue you experienced but was rigging a piece of cordage for now. Your 3d printed clips looked brilliant. Id be happy to send you some loot in exchange if you could print me up a set. Shipping USA

    an idea for the cover fixing would be use studs with poppers inlay one part into the wood with epoxy then press the other bit onto it from the cover , easily removable cover

      @SailingWithDave 21 день назад

      Hi Spud. I did consider many ways of doing it but i'm not so sure that would work. I think the sea would get in under the press studs and would also pop them off too easily. I think along the top to secure the back t some kind of brace would work though.

    Sorry for not inclkuding this in the notes. I bought the suit from www.marinesuperstore.com They were most helpful getting things sent out and exchanged so I would recommend them for that. Just make sure you;re super careful with the suit when trying it on and you don;t take any tags etc off!!!

      Haha. Yes, the excitement of seeing and sailing with another Mirror was great though. Well it was a bit neck and neck but the other guy tacked and headed home in the end. We were headed for different ends of the lake!
