Adding St. Croix Sheep To The Farm
Просмотров 156День назад
Today we're adding even more animals to the farm - this time it's St. Croix sheep. We'll talk through our decision to add these three St. Croix rams, discuss where we found them and watch as they get acclimated to their new home. For those of you that are new to sheep, St. Croix sheep are hair sheep. We brought them in to complement our Katahdins which share very similar characteristics. The re...
Fixing Our Water Situation During Summer Drought
Просмотров 17214 дней назад
It has been bone dry here to wrap up the summer months in Eastern PA. We haven't had a steady rain in weeks and today we are out her fixing our water situation to the pigs. In recent weeks, our ram pump which is the primary supply of water up into the pasture, has gone a bit finicky on us as the creek bed has dried up a bit. This has led us to hauling buckets by hand which if you've never done ...
No Easier Way To Clean A Skull

Today we'll revisit our "Ram Skull Maggot Bucket" idea from a few months ago and show you that there really is no easier way to clean a skull than this! I'm sure this process has been used before but I've never seen it integrated with chickens as a way to provide supplemental protein while also cleaning the skull for a mount. We try to utilize a systems thinking approach and let nature do as mu...

Hey man, Maine here, long time no talk (btw call me Ahron) Great video, I was a little surprised that you are going to process Ziggy (do the kids know?) I get what you are saying in the video, as a famer myself we do have to have to make serious choices. Yes, they are animals , we still have to make healthy choices. In other words we do not kill until or unless we have to. You mentioned how good the meat is, I am curious about the move to another breed. You have a breed that is good (yes they take longer before processing) however, it is good meat. We are not pig farmers, we don't even eat pork haha. We have plenty of livestock however. Just looking to see the thinking more than the vlog gave. Talk soon
The kids do not know yet. My daughter has been really good in understanding that our animals give us our meat and our little guy is still too young but I’m sure questions will be coming down the line. Definitely a tough decision for us but one I believe needs to be made for us to take the next steps with pigs. As far as other breeds, I’m confident we’ll still get really good meat. I do believe breed has a part in it for sure as some have been bred specifically for certain body types, sizes, etc. however I’m still a believer that good practices is ultimately what makes or breaks the end result. You can take a great breed with good genetics and feed it nothing but garbage and come out with inferior meat. So it’s important to have both but I lean toward good practices making the difference. The pigs we have are more of a lard pig and believe me they do have a ton of fat when we process. Good to a degree and useful but also takes away from the size of your cuts. Who knows maybe we’ll keep our sow around and breed with a new boat of a different breed - one step at a time!! Lol. Lot of planning and thought as always but processing this guy will be our first step. Thanks as always for watching!
Consuming meat that you raise, feed , and process yourselves is something most of us don't experience. Must be quite an experience knowing exactly what you're eating without all the modern processes. Good for you!
Appreciate it! It well worth it despite all the work that goes into it
How do you oil it
There’s a chamber with a big knob right where the bar connects to the head of the tool. Just pour any standard bar and chain in and you’ll be good. I get mine at tractor supply
Will this cut sapling trees
Absolutely. Works great on 2-3 inch diameter trees. You can go bigger. Just need to take it slow
I hope this works cutting saplings and woody weeds
Woody weeds are tricky. It cuts them as long as they are somewhat firm. Sometimes briars can bind up and pop the chain. Just need to be careful and learn to get a feel for it
Sorry again using you to vent my frustration! But isnt it nice to be outside with your sheep that are healthy and en joying life! I dont normaly post cause i know the thruth is offencesive to people! But honestly these people who raise sheep in sheds have issues ive never seen. Mostly cause they cant balance the nutrition right! Well and they aren't moving and getting proper exercise. They post all their issues and dying lambs and get a bizzilion followers telling them how great they are and how they try so hard to carefor there animals. IMO they are breeding inferior animals , cause they are reacting to what they think, im pretty sure i couldn't take 1 of their sheep and put it where minei are and expect it to survive. I mean look how many people are pulling lambs on utube? I dont pull lambs, i dont dock tails for fly strike,i dont worm and feed little grain! Im a dumb ass and only been doing this 5 years! But im smart enough to let my animals talk to me! Im not a co trol freak! My animals teach me! Thankyou sorry!
Haha all good! I agree with that. Obviously bad things can happen with any livestock but it’s pretty cool to see how proper management actually makes it much easier and dramatically reduces the chances of these issues. Part of the reason we started documenting what we’re doing. Don’t know everything but learning along the way and trying to show people the truth
I feel lucky 5 years no bloat! Got so confident i bred young ewes last year! Not worth it ,wont do that again😢
Ha sorry to bother you , but avoiding the real news and possible start of world war 3😢. I see your sheep now katadin and saw a black bellie. I has 3 black bellies 1 of them threw large nice ewes out of katadin! I was surprized! I got a ram out of that off my purebred stcroix. Im going to use it on my doroer cross ewes and my yearlings. Im surprized what hybred vigor does! Plus that will give me unrealated blood to cross into my super strain!
Haha I just responded to your other comment talking about the strength of hybrids. Agree completely. Also never really registered that she was part black belly. Not sure why I didn’t connect that but she’s mixed with katahdin as well. She gave us a beautiful brown lamb but wasn’t bred this past year.
And yes I’d rather talk sheep and things we can control than the news lol
Was waiting to find out what breed your other sheep are? I started 5 years ago. With katadins and some dorper stuff! Kept trying and bought 6 dorper ewes this year. Have 1 actully large registered st croix . Im in extreme conditions ,sometimes 6 month winters and than gets hot fast. For me the dorpers have to much wool. Snow does not shake off in winter and melts down to skin. The wooley ones on ly ones i have ever seen shiver. Than they also carry their wool 1 to 2 months longer than st croix or good katadin! I culled all dorpers over a quarter. Most of mine are shed off in april before the snow is gone. All my crappy dorpers i breed to the st croix,Ha. I have about 4 diferent strains of katadins, most of them seem as tough and resilient as my st croix. 5 years never have trimed hooves on this rocky 80 acre hillside, dont need wormer. Except i use it if i buy in something new, want to give them a fair shot! 1 of my strains of katadins seriously no wool, extremly large and very tough in my conditions. After 2 years finally got a grandson out of that line. Going to use him this season. His growth rate put everthi g to shame and the dorpers i bought in this year are smaller than my half st croix??. Im thinking dorpers need super paddocks, flat and tons of grain plus, tails docked, and sheared . Amazing to look at ! Bought these last 6 out of incredible looking ram? Lambs my smallest by far, but hustling on large paddocks ,on ly enough grain ,to make them friendly and follow me every where. Black bellies and st croix tough and nice. But i believe i have katadins just as tough and bigger than dorpers. I culled massively and still will always cull my last 4 that shed and anything small! Any way long winded, i just cant express how i feel about false advertising and wonder about the newer so called dream breeds australian whites and royal white. The amount of wool i see tgem leaving i expect more false advertising. Sales men just trying to cash in! They are all sheep its not about breed its about refining a strain. Which could probably be done with any of the breeds, if you set a goal. Would love to hear if you experience any of the realities i have on your journeys. I tell my thruth for my area! Thats all i can do, but ill tell you the salesmen get hostile!
Well said and thank you for sharing. Most of our flock is katahdin as well. Some actually have a bit of Texas dall in them as our first ram had a good bit of Texas dall. He was a really large animal but also aggressive so we processed him this spring. Also have one ewe that seems to have some of the wool genetic from another breed. Haven’t decided what we’re going to do with her yet. The previous owner swore she shed last year but I’m having my doubts. Don’t really want that bred into new lambs so will have a decision to make there. I agree I think there’s value in developing a strain accustomed to your situation and like a lot of animals, crosses tend to be more resilient. Aiming to have mostly a katahdin and st. Croix cross going forward but wouldn’t say anyone is wrong for trying others. The dorpers to my understanding have more issues but I’ve also seen people successfully raising them. Hoping for several lambs this coming spring so we’ll see how they all turn out for us.
Do you keep a guard dog with them? Just wondering about predators
We do not. These guys are in a woven wire pasture so really no concern with predators. However most of our flock is in a larger pasture with electrified high tensile. Predators could definitely get through but believe we have it hot enough to be a good deterrent. During early spring when coyotes have their pups I move the flock closer to the house into the woven area. That would be when they’re most aggressive
However I must say I’d never fault anyone for taking the extra step and getting a dog. Certainly won’t hurt!
Great review i needed this to set mine up 🙏🏾
Awesome. Glad I could help!
Could you hook a ram pump up to a houses gutter system to lift the water into a reservoir higher up?
That’s an awesome idea! I think it would work as long as you can funnel the water properly into the pipe. If you have too much force I’d be concerned about getting air pockets which would keep it from working properly. Would also need to have enough water to keep it running. Obviously this situation would also be dependent on rain which aside from the last two days here we have been bone dry. Really interesting though. You’d have plenty of drop
@@EvergreenFarm19 yeah here in florida there is plenty of rain. And it would be to store water for gravity feeding plants during the dry season? Or maybe hydroelectric energy too
Would definitely be curious to hear the results if you try it!
At least we are finally getting a slow continuous sprinkle the last day or so
Yes much needed for sure! Hoping it keeps up for one last growth push this fall
chicken tractor, you can move along with the pigs. Probably just on the other side of fence so pigs dont destroy it.
Could definitely do that. Would lose some of the benefits but would also be able to control them haha. I’ll definitely give an update when i make a decision
Alot of farmers learn how to place a trocar themselves to save their animals when a vet isn't available soon enough. Basic medical care, as well as some slightly more advanced procedures, are worth learning.
Yes definitely! Not there yet but certainly want to learn this as well
Hey man, Maine here. We have talked before and I have already said, the weather is changing. Farming going forward is going to be different.
Yes it certainly appears that way right now. Very odd patterns and light winters recently. At least in Pa… can’t speak for Maine haha
Kids dont know we enslave animals with electricity.
Our animals are not enslaved though
What state are you let me guess new York and in a democrat county
We’re actually in PA. As far as I know there’s nothing that says this is required. However, there’s also nothing that really protects you from someone getting hurt on your property. Being that this is so close to the road, I don’t want to find out!
Karavan sells a tie down kit that installs on the side of the frame via the pre-drilled holes that have the plastic plugs in them
Good to know. Thanks for sharing!
It's so unnecessary for pigs, lol 😂
Perhaps yes but better too hot than not enough! This is actually tied into our larger perimeter fence where we have sheep for a good part of the year
Looking great! Keep up.
Thank you!
Also, I loved to “we aren’t the government and don’t have open borders here” statement in this video- classic!!!
Haha that one just came to me! Glad you liked it.
Hey my friend. Just a note to let you know we signed our contract and received the paperwork for our USDA grant today!! For the 5.6 acres tract we are working with, to do the following; 1. Perimeter fence. 2. Center divider fence. 3. Temporary (movable electric fence with/charger) partitioning fence. 4. No till seeding. 5. Running watering pipeline w/frost proof hydrants (4). Total amount of grant is $20,039! If you want more info (or if that other subscriber who was interested) I can provide you with my email address so I can send you copies of some of the paperwork, to see if you’d be interested.
That is outstanding and will be an awesome setup! I’d appreciate the info as well. If you want you can send it my way at hill.tyler218@gmail.com I’ve looked into a few but wasn’t sure how the whole process worked. This will be great
@@EvergreenFarm19 I will do!

Did you visit Joe in NY?
Plan on buyng the same trailer very soon. Was wondering since your in Pennsylvania as well, what was the process with tractor supply and Penndot with getiing the title transferd and tagged? what does tractor supply do? did Penndot make it the usual PITA process?
Certainly a hassle as expected for me as well. I wish I could give you an answer as to what the “actual” process is but both tractor supplies that I went to gave me different direction. The one told me that I must buy the trailer than go to the notary that they use and then come back to pickup the trailer. Of course it was in the evening and the place was closed so I went to another store the next day that had already told me I can buy and drive off the lot at the same time. At this point I had 10 days to register but again they only worked with one place that was quite a bit out of my way. As far as actually registering it, it wasn’t too bad just need to be prepared with bill of sale, drivers license info, etc…. And of course be ready to pay their fees and fees for fees lol.
@@EvergreenFarm19 I was thinking they were giving bill of sales. Thankfully, I’m in the Harrisburg area and the Tractor supply store I’m getting it from is literally right next to the Penndot service center. I guess it depends on the manager at the store to if you take it right away or not. Honestly as long as it’s paid for I don’t see why they care about if it gets properly tagged.
Hopefully that makes it easier for you then! Best of luck!
How important is the ground part for this to work. I want to test it at an apartment complex where the electric fence is about 8 feet off the ground and I don't think the cord will reach the ground.
Won’t give you a true reading. In theory you could wrap a wire around it to another ground like stake to extend if needed. That would probably work. As long as it’s in contact into the ground
@@EvergreenFarm19 good idea. I might try that. Thanks for the help and keep up your great channel!
No problem! I appreciate it!
How nice!!! Hopefully, people will follow your lead. 😊😊😊❤❤❤
Hope so too!

question . spose you could drive a zero turn mower on the gate without bending it ?
I’ve looked around for a weight limit on the gate and came away with nothing. It’s not the strongest but I believe it would be ok as mowers aren’t terribly heavy. Worst case, use some boards as added support or even take the gate off and use your own ramp. It’s held on my two pins and the latches
Ive been loading a John Deere X330 alot on it this summer. No problems
Good to know. Thanks for sharing!
Is the grate on the gate bends when you loaded up your tractor
I dolly up my 500 pound water slide up the ramp and it’s good. Not sure how heavy a zero turn is.
Do you dip the cords to prevent joint ill? Have you watched Sandi Brock Sheepishly Me? She's a knowledgeable Sheperdess.
We have not - I actually hadn’t heard of that until now so thanks for sharing! Will definitely check out her channel as well
