    I entertained the journey into painting on paper in May of this year ( before I have painted on children’s clothes in the 1980’s when craft fabric paint was popular, then in my 20’s for 10 years I threw pottery and using brushes painted on the glaze ) so now I use water color mostly the first on line class I took suggested way too many supplies, which I bought 😢, so I have inexpensive craft gouache ( Arteza & Essentials) I understand that this is opaque, yet I have not found anyone using both regular WC and gouache together… so I guess they use it by itself…

    • @KateMilesArt
      @KateMilesArt День назад

      Arteza is perfectly wonderful to get started! I hear their line of acrylics are fun to use also! As for using together, both are going to be water soluble and reactivate with water after drying. The only thing you might consider when mixing is avoiding getting the gouache directly in your pans of watercolor, but that is really more because you probably don't want to add opacity to your pan of color. I would absolutely add it to my mixing wells, etc. where I can control the mix. I might grab a set also and throw up a couple of videos, but in the meantime, I can demonstrate how I use white gouache with my watercolor! 💜

    @mariacohen5179 3 дня назад

    Just completed- quite nice and I hand wrote that message - question, I am new to watercolor and I bought “ gouache” I understand it is opaque but feel uneasy using it- by any chance by you use this? And if so can you show a creation example oh how to use this paint? Thank you I so look forward to your demonstration s 🥰🎨

      @KateMilesArt 2 дня назад

      Oh awesome! I hope you enjoyed it! As for gouache, I have used it before, but I do not own any currently. I have had my eye on some gouache lately though! If you don't mind me asking, what kind do you have? I am not a pro at gouache, but I have worked with the traditional gouache (non-permanent). You can also get acryl-gouache which has acrylic paint qualities and so I believe it dries permanently, which is unlike regular, which can re-wet similar to watercolor. I find gouache to be a very nice matte paint, which can be thinned out to be more the consistency of watercolor also, if you want the transparency. It can also re-wet and be reworked in layers, but has that nice opacity if you layer it more thickly. You might have given me an excuse to go get some! lol But either way, I encourage you to crack it open and give it a whirl! Gouche is a lot of fun to play with, and depending on what kind of background you like, it may end up being your preferred medium in certain circumstances. Another way to play with gouache is to get a tube of white gouache and you can mix it in your regular watercolors and make them a bit lighter and more opaque! You can get really nice pastel colors that way too. 🙂💜

    • @KateMilesArt
      @KateMilesArt 2 дня назад

      I guess I should clarify - I don't own a gouache set right now, but I do keep a couple of tubes of white handy in case I want to mix it 🙂

    I love the Baohong paper. By the way those floral images you showed towards the end of the unboxing ARE actually stickers, I also have them. If you find them difficult to remove from their backing, place a small piece of sellotape on each side and use that to pull them apart. They are called PET stickers. They still have the shiny paper, but it’s nice to be able to attach them. Great haul, thanks for sharing.

    Hi Kate! What is the watercolor sketchbook you're using? I have several, but would like a spiral-bound. I have a Canson, but I'm not happy with the paper quality. Thanks!

    • @KateMilesArt
      @KateMilesArt 14 дней назад

      Hello! I am actually using Canson in this series! It is their spiral watercolor paper book, 7"x10", 140 lb cellulose. It has 30 sheets and I got it locally at Michaels on sale. I don't normally use Canson for painting (although I do love inexpensive cellulose paper for some things where I'm embracing the blooms!). However, it is great for swatches, tests, and lots of things where you might not want to use more expensive paper. It has worked very well as a swatch library, especially since it is inexpensive. I have also painted both sides of each page and it's holding up well! 💜If you want to use Canson and get a good deal, Michaels often has sales on their paper pads for up to half off, so it's worth the wait to stock up. Those sales do not include Arches, however. As a side note - I think cellulose paper performs better for wet on dry without using a lot of water. When I get very wet and watery, cotton holds up much better for me.

    Hi Kate! So pretty! Can you tell me the difference between distress ink and distress oxide?

    • @KateMilesArt
      @KateMilesArt 19 дней назад

      Hello, and thank you!! So, I am still a beginner when it comes to those distress inks, but I thought your question presented an excellent opportunity for me to learn something too! I looked up both, and apparently here are the differences: distress ink is dye based, more transparent so it appears brighter on light backgrounds, can be a little more challenging to blend, dries faster, and will have a bleach effect when water is added. It is better for creating a weathered, vintage effect. Distress oxide is a mix of pigment and dye, slower drying, and more opaque, which allows it to look brighter on dark backgrounds. It is also easier to blend and while it also gets lighter when water is added/dropped into it, it still retains color for an oxidized look. I hope that helps, and I also found the information very interesting! 💜

If so big thanks 🥰🎨🎉

    • @KateMilesArt
      @KateMilesArt 22 дня назад

      Hi Maria! I actually mostly use acrylic inks, but some spread better than others. I get a nice spread with the Amsterdam inks and PH Martin does pretty well too on most colors except white. White tends to stay put. Daler Rowney probably has the most spread as far as acrylic inks go, at least the ones I have. There are some fluid watercolors that would spread more, and Michaels has their own brand. I also hear Ecoline is good but I've never tried it 🙂 I haven't tried Liquitex acrylic ink yet either, but if another viewer has, hopefully they will leave a comment 💜 some acrylic inks have a bit more of a resist quality where they will push watercolor out of the way and still spread, which can also be a beautiful effect!

    My Gawd you ramble. Maybe gather your thoughts and information that you want to deliver to your viewers BEFORE turning on the camera. Only way I listened was on 2X speed and forwarding past the redundancy

    😊 I was experiencing with the same thing. And wounding if watercolor and Acrylic Ink will mix? Is it okay? So from watching your video 😊 I guess it is. New SUBSCRIBERS here I love Supporting other Art and Cancer channel's. Really all channel's that resonate with me😊 I'm also working on filming more Art on my Cancer Story Channel. Is it me? Or well let's just say I need practice filming while I do art. So hard for me and I don't know why. I did,well I still do have a separate channel but it's just to much to keep up with. So I decided to just have a art and Cancer Channel together 😊 Stay STRONG Stay Creative 🌬🎨

    Thank you for showing us how it is done! Really dumb question, maybe, but do you leave the marker bits in the spray bottle or use tweezers and get them out?

    • @KateMilesArt
      @KateMilesArt Месяц назад

      Not dumb at all! I do leave them in. Maybe it's lazy but I have never had a problem with them being in there and they don't interfere with using the ink. You could take them out after a few days if you like, though! 💜

    Okay so I use to paper craft back in the day, like early to mid 2000's, and the pigment/dye sprays were super popular to use. Especially the pearl/glitter sprays. I did my own using alcohol and eyeshadow. Didn't last too long, but it served the purpose while I was able to afford the real ones from Lindy's Stamp Gang or the Tim Holtz sprays. I even use those now to "watercolor" and the oxide effects are beautiful!

      That's a fabulous idea! I've heard of people using eyeshadow and binder to make metallic watercolor pan paints too! It's amazing what we can create when we're creative with our supplies. Thank you for sharing! 💜
