Hesitation on acceleration. 99 Eclipse Spyder 2.4
I have a problem with my car hesitating on acceleration intermittently. In this video, I am pressing on the throttle and you can hear the engine rev and drop a few times then it clears up. (My thumb is holding the throttle, but I am not moving it.) What can cause this? 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder 2.4

73 Super Beetle original clutch hook

This is the clutch hook that came in my car when I bought it. I do not know if it is original VW or aftermarket. It does not have any marking on it. I welded it and put it back in the car as a test. www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/1732681.jpg

    I have a SVDA 034 with electronic ignition, but I haven't built up the confidence to change it and time it and all that. Kinda unsure whether I need to change coil or not. I have the stock black Bosch from 1969. I believe they have a built in ballast resistance but I'm not sure. Don't regular distributors with points require a ballast resistor? If so I'm good to go. Self-doubt is my worst enemy. Thank you so much for this video.

    I will say that I do not think the vast majority of people will need to perform a static time, a total centrifugal advance time, an SVDA advance-only time, and a full DVDA time on their engine in order to dial it in. But man, you did an outstanding job on this video so everyone should be able to time their engine wherever it sits currently. Thank you!

    Awesome Explanation. This is the only DVDA setup I’ve seen that makes perfect sense. Much appreciated! Just ordered a remanufactured distributor from VWNOS…Many Thanks!!!

    How unbearable was the sound? I have to remove my entire system off my 81 vanagon and am somewhat scared. Do you think I will have to turn the motor to get the a/f ratio right or will I be safe? I just need to run the van like this for a short bit till I can fab up a new system. Thanks!

      I would not run it very long without the exhaust. I would not drive it at all without an exhaust.

    I just looked up a video have the same problem doesn't wanna go when I floor the accelerator past about a 3rd or halfway. Replaced the tps, and just did the idle control today. I'm thinking it's the fuel pressure regulator, lot of people having the issue with that. Just ordered one off of rock auto for about 60 bucks!

    • @timothyb8281
      @timothyb8281 3 года назад

      Replaced fuel pressure regulator, fuel filter, fuel pump, had injectors professionally cleaned, cleaned throttle body and intake manifold. Still have trouble, good luck.

      @@timothyb8281 yeah me too. I just took the exhaust apart to see if my cat or exhaust got plugged. Little more power but still be doing it. Replaced coils, tps, regulator, new spark plugs, injectors look good, as do vaccuum lines. Not sure man

    Where is the retardant hose connected on the other side. Can’t see it in the video.

      It connects to the rear (rear is rear) of the carb. Like this www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/2057674.jpg

    when you time it at max advance at 30 degrees 3000rpm,, what is that actually ignition timing when you measure it at idle. so at idle point the gun at the block casing marker and get the tdc mark to line up, whats the gun say? thanks

    • @timothyb8281
      @timothyb8281 3 года назад

      It should say around 7.5 at idle for a DVDA. However, max advance at approximately 3k rpm should be 28 to 32 atdc. Having max advance in the correct spot is more important than what it does at idle.

    Seriously, good information. Use a sharpie to mark the dist position. Then you will know exactly if it moved when tightening down.

    • @timothyb8281
      @timothyb8281 3 года назад

      Lol. It's because the distributor clamp is too close to the nut to get a socket on it. I have since changed to a type 3 clamp which moves the nut to the left side of the distributor.

    This video was one of the best videos I have EVER seen on timing. Thanks a million! I have a DVDA with pertronix ignition and I have been having trouble with tuning because I have been timing my max adv with the hose connected. I think this will solve my problem and I can't thank you enough for the insight!

    Hi Tim. I just saw this video, after searching on Google for '73 SB wiring....there's not much out there for us, seems like it's a total bastard year. The previous owner(s) of our Super completely boogered up the car, including the wiring, and I have been painstakingly trying to put everything back to its original state. While I can read a wiring diagram, I have to say that the way the Germans wrote this one is driving me nuts, so I've been doing it the hard way and tracing each wire. I'm at the point now where I have to remove the dash, because it's just a total rat's nest back there. Hopefully you make some more vids.

    Hi Tim. (Hope i can call you that). I did exactly as you did here... still does not work. I replaced all fuses, just like yours except one close to rhe center is empty, the rest is the same. Also i have brand new Empi taillights properly wired according to several sources that say the same configuration. Any suggestion on what else can be?

    • @timothyb8281
      @timothyb8281 5 лет назад

      If you have a test light, check it like I did without the aftermarket switch hooked up, to make sure it works. Your middle fuse (I think #7) will be empty from the factory, it doesn't affect this. Also, make sure the black wire for the switch goes to the #11 fuse on the top.
