Why the New Cenobites Don't Work | Hellraiser
I enjoy the new Hellraiser movie, but I am not a fan of these new Cenobite-guys. How does this film manage to strip away that mystique and iconography? Well, you are just going to need to watch the video to find out! No really, I answer the question!

Simon was able to believe in himself, and keep pushing forward. he is always growing, improving, and refining himself. he was terrified in the first episode, but chose to move forward, to fight, for himself, his friends, his brother. the source of his motivation was his belief in himself, and everyone around him. it was his power, his fuel, and it formed his drill. he chose to fight to better everything and everyone around him. he fought to protect and better the life they all lived. he was able to achieve this because he believed in himself, in his friends, and in his drill. he was able to surpass and grow from everything that happened to him because of the believe, the power, the "drill" that Simon has in him, that kamina showed him by believing in it even when Simon didn't. Shinji is the opposite. he fights for the sake of fear. he fights because he doesn't want the blue hair girl to die, due to him choosing not to pilot the Eva. but, he was fighting for a stranger, he had no substance to his motivation, just fear. this leads to him running away constantly, making just getting into the Eva a battle. Shinji never wanted to fight, he never wants to improve himself, he choses to be a coward. he never tries to better himself, his situation, himself. he gives into to his situation, never even thinking about changing it. he is a slave to his surroundings, just doing as demands of him, not because he wanted to, or even because he thinks he can, but because he was expected to/pushed to. this is a stark contrast to Simon who fights for all his friends, with his friends because of his belief in himself and everyone around him, that they can and will win. Shinji is always truly alone, never growing, never fighting for his friends like Simon because Shinji's "friends" are fake and are horrible to him. this leaves him with no internal OR external drive of change, to become better, stronger, or change himself, those around him and their situation. and these are reflected in the endings. ttgl- saves the universe, destroying the anti-spiral, a all powerful, multi universal threat to life. drilling out a path for humanity to live for themselves, to choose how they wants to live, what they want to do. free from the one trying to crush and control them. evangelion- everyone is merged into one hivemind, giving up on fighting. they give up on change, on growth, on fighting, on believing in themselves, on believing in each other. they end up with everyone being no-one, and everyone, deleting the differences in each person. they become one being, incapable of change, in growth, in failure or success. they are just one creature, that's at its core, is the embodiment of the human ability to give up, to stop growing, and die, having never tried to become better.

It was 3 years ago but still.Evangelion for me also about live to struggle.Evangelion should compared with ttgl, but in ttgl we should take only 12 first episodes.Because in Eva sinjie chosed to embrace difference and that he had to fight to live, because life worth it only at the end of evangelion, and Simon embrased it in battle agaist Guame. When you watching Eve you could understand for example why spiral king do what he did.If TTGL is great show but still it's literaly told you in last series that it's survivours mistake representation, when show you scene with hundreds of laggans who failed. When i was teen or young adult TTGL vibe was closer to me.But now when i am closer to 30 than to 20 it begin to turn around.Like TTGL show you if you not mascular, whole of spirit representative of manhood, you will suck but if you raise it in you you will crush trogh any wall.Evangelion answer, for you what to do when you not able to do it or if it's would not work.Yes characters in EVE struggle to life.Exactly.Because some of them just only grow from kids and worl put on them weight that not every adult can understand and hold,or adults that tryed to fought this life and it hits tham back damn hard. But Eva show you that it's okay, peapoles not perfect, world is not perfect, past and future and present not perfect it's full of shitiest shit. But yeah, you still get into damn robot. You still strugling to found at least little light in it to continue. You still here, and you alive.I don't know how to say it,TTGL say to you if you will fight hard and long enough yeah maybe you will have some losess but you would win in end.Eva told you win it'self dosent matter, even when you loose and all broken down you still able to live, there still reasons to live, even if you pushed down to eath and not able to even move, even if world once and once again show you you cannt win, sthere is mani inside yourself and outside this world that give you no chance of happy ending from fairy tale, keep going, even if it little by little, even if it's something unconventional, live.Even if sinjie hate to pilot Eva he still do it.Even if being alive and individual being bring him suffer and make him constantly fight:angels, problems in his life, his fears about frendship and sexual relationships, army of his inner demons,he still at the end of the day chosing live this life even if it seems terrible.TTGL-fight for your right to live.Evengelion-you have right to live so fight.

First of all, I want no arguments or bad will, I'm just stating an opinion, no intent of attacking anyone. Respect is important in many situations. I just wanna state something because the video overall is quite good and enjoyable, LIKE A LOT (good work btw effort really shines through), and hearing you say it made me want to put it into words, and also because I'm Catholic (a priest or someone like that, like you said, would make a more sound statement. I'm just a random on the Internet.) I feel like some people who equate some of the themes in Evangelion with Christian beliefs only see part of it. Yes, in Heaven there is supposed to be harmony and peace and joy but it is never thought of as abandoning your humanity. Because to reach Heaven, you have to be good of your own volition. As a human, you have the free will to choose between doing good and doing evil. To push against the darkness or to let it wash over you without resistance. To, even if the world seems fraught with bad things, work towards a better and brighter future AS HUMANS. It might never come to be Heaven on Earth, it might never even be close enough to consider it a good place to settle and relax. But we have to keep trying to, because it's the good thing to do, and so it must be done. I think, in that sense, TTGL comes closer to that reality than Evangelion. Because yes, the Instrumentality Project might seem peace achieved, but it's a decision taken without input of anyone but the main trigger, which even then can be argued doesn't have control over it either. It feels like fake Heaven, that wasn't earned through actions but rather thrust upon them as a pale imitation of happiness. TTGL is a future where people, despite bickering, despite butting heads, despite fighting and facing threats MANY times what they could theoretically manage, are working together for a better future for everyone! And really, putting your flaws aside and achieving understanding with the others is the love Christianity was built to pursue (despite things not having gone that way.... yeah that's its own can of worms). Idk my thought process kind of works while I write it down so its all jumbled up and confusing probably. I just think since God is Love and there's much more love to be demonstrated in TTGL's opposing what seems an unsurmountable evil for the sake of the ones you love than in Evangelion's passiveness at the state of reality (sadly common in today's society among Christians, we do fall in the "but really, what can I do? Nothing! So lets just live out our days quietly and pray for the good things to come." Mentality a lot), maybe both have that stuff going on. And maybe there's parallels in both. Maybe it's a What It Is vs What It Should Be kinda feeling in our attitude against the evil of this world. Or maybe I'm just seeing ghosts. Life is a weird thing yknow? ANYWAYS, great video, really cool! Have a great day :D I hope whoever reads this is doing well

jesus... coming up with something new... Yeah... I think there are great mixes of old and recent ones, that seem to reach new steps, but no one seems to dive into it. I burnt my hand, 3rd degree, so trying to understand evangelion was like trying to remember how bad it burnt. No thanks. Rise from the ashes! There's the simple meaning to it, and then you have all the nuances and windchimes that decorate the room for the ballad of pain. It's sad, but it gets scary, and that's just bad.

The reason why I hate Evangelion is because Shinji does nothing, he gave up in the first episode and refuses to try further. And this is not in any way narratively condemned in the anime, on the contrary, the anime tries to make the viewer sympathize with Shinji, and this annoys me the most. I'm disgusted by Shinji's character and because of this I'm disgusted by Evangelion, despite all its good qualities. And after watching this video and comparing these two anime in my head, I came to the following conclusion: the question of giving up or moving on is not a question, it's a test. If you decide to give up, you will be left alone in the ruins. If you decide to move on, you will reach the stars.

See this is why I thought I would love Gurenn Lagann, all the themes sound like something I’d go crazy for. But when I watched it I felt like it was missing something and I’m not quite sure what. Even the fanservice felt weirdly gross to me and i actually enjoy fanservice from time to time. I loved kill la kill, which is made by the same studio, with the same art style and some of the same themes and even more fanservice. Genuinely wanted to enjoy GL so much since I loved Eva too but it missed me. I didn’t even like Kamina, which is weird because he reminds me of Joseph joestar and I love Joseph joestar. Yoko is voiced by the same seiyuu as my all time favorite anime character (that’s the main reason I decided to pick up the show) but I didn’t feel the same energy from her. Completely baffled at this one. Anyway great video, I guess I will just be stuck in confusion forever

It’s less than issue with anime and more an issue with adaptations. Manga is a medium with a ton of exposition and monologuing. If you watch anime originals they tend to go more for the standard “show don’t tell” approach.

I think there's too much hyperbole about Neon Genesis. The MC refusing to Pilot the giant robot can be traced back to Gundam. Thereafter, while the MCs of Gundam "steal" the robots, they don't automatically accept their responsibilities. Tomino's work are those of death and tragedy and the MCs of his work often suffer the worst. Gundam also started as an anime original and its sequel, Zeta Gundam, pretty much launched the popularity of mecha animes in general and original animations. It's also more of a parallel to starwars than Evangelion. Gundam pretty much launched the popularity of the "real robot" genre in which Evangelion partly belongs to that.

Idc if I’m 3 years late but man you really lost me on the character analogy cause my goodness you got so much wrong about misato, kamina, and Shinji😭😭 Idk if you watched the rebuilds but you saying “oh if kamina was in the position as misato Shinji would’ve been more confident” is just false cause it’s shown in the 4th rebuild movie shinjis friends (who are now adults) try to help him through his depression after someone close to him dies and something major I don’t wanna spoil happens causing most of humanity to live in a horrible state, and Shinji cannot listen to this advice. You’re oversimplifying Shinji to where it’s just “oh he’s depressed and lonely” when that’s not it. He feels unwanted by pretty much everyone around him ever since he was a child, lacking any love, or being wanted by people, he hates himself cause he isn’t what people are, and this transcends his relationship with his father. People like asuka are also related to this where Shinji desperately wants asuka to notice him to the point where he even 💦 on her just to get her to notice him and when it doesn’t work he chokes her out of desperation. Simon’s main issue was he felt behind kamnina because he was so strong and confident in his eyes and he felt he couldn’t match up to him to which kamina said “believe in yourself not in the you I believe in, or the me who believes in you”. Kamina is not helping Shinji at all cause his situation is way too complex for him to change or understand, and it’s just gonna end with Shinji either berating him or him just being even more depressed

And I have no idea where you got this notion that misato is disapproving or berating of Shinji cause please rewatch the original series and movie I beg of you☠️ misato tooo Shinji in cause he reminded her of himself, she welcomed him into her house, congratulated him when he saved the city from the first Eva invasion and told him “this is the city that you saved today”. She even congratulated him on one of the Eva testings where he did better than Asuka on, and when you claim she “told Shinji to get out and let the city to burn” in the next scene after she went back to find Shinji cause she deeply cares about him. Even when kaworu died misato tried to tell Shinji he did good and it was for humanity, and she even died for him in eoe. Saying misato never cared or approved of him is a lie that’s pisses me off so much, she lectures him cause she wants to the parent she never had and the one Shinji doesn’t currently have in his life. It’s as simple as that, how she would work with Simon? I don’t know, I stopped watching this fucking video 14: 59 minutes in cause this shit got me pissed off and nothing you said made sense. Please rewatch gurren lagann, and rewatch all Eva content my goodness bro😭

I think the religious aspects are important, but more as a backdrop to the wider question of individualism vs collectivism. In Eva, the main and supporting cast are individuals, but only so far as it furthers the story. This has something to do with the military themes of the series, but it's also reflected in the way that they interact with each other, often going with the flow of what's going on around them even if they don't completely understand it, or else being coerced into doing what they're told by those around them. Even Rei's defiance against gendo at the end of the series ends up furthering Seele's goals, and shinji and asuka's rejection of instrumentality leaves him alone on a desolate world, surrounded by a sea of LCL that was once humanity and her dead at shinji's hands. the message is clear; you can defy the will of the collective, but there will be dire consequences for your defiance. Meanwhile, in Gurran Lagann, every character is unique. similar to others sometimes, but ultimately clearly defined in who and what they are. They have similar goals, and they end up on the same path, but they choose to do so for reasons that are their own, not just because somebody told them they had to or because they feel like it makes them matter. Even the anti-spirals are a collective entity that seeks to bend humanity to its will or destroy it entirely. Kamina and later Simon lead, but those who follow choose to do so of their own free will. Even when a character dies to further the group goals, they do so on their own terms. The Spiral king adds credence to this. in the beginning of the series, he kept humanity underground and controlled their numbers under the terms of his agreement with the anti-spirals to protect the collective species, and initially joins the group as a clone of his own head, but eventually willingly joins the fight, even relishing in the chance to fight once against the anti-spirals that once defeated him. Again the message is clear: even when we work together, we do so of our own free will.

Did you follow through with it? How was it for you? I might do the same with EVA because I can see what'd warrant this mass appeal (although I still think I won't really enjoy my time with it, despite resonating with it's feelings as I've seen described, as floating in those feelings is not something I want to do, the so-called "Don't cry, get mad" principle)

What more would I want Leorio to go through? He’s my favorite character, so I’d have to say excrucupiating emotional pain and a romance subplot.

Leorio is the only one of the main characters whose core motivation doesn't change, hence why *he* doesn't change much. He wants money so that he can be a doctor and run a free hospital, so that other people won't suffer the same fate his best friend did. At the most basic level, Leorio wants to help people. The people he's close to are higher up on his list, obviously, but his caring nature isn't limited to only his friends. Leorio's overall goals are surprisingly idealistic for someone whose attitude on the surface seems so cynical. That's not something he *needs* to develop out of. If that core goal of his ever did change, it would be jarring and feel at odds with his established character; not to mention being extremely narratively unsatisfying.

What Kougami said to Akane is "Shoot me" in Japanese, for the info. Edit: "The law doesn't protect the people, people protect the law." was a line that had been embed into me all those years to my core. I know Psycho Pass isn't everyone's cup of tea, but to this day is one of the most life changing shows I've come across, especially given how and where we're headed to in this current era.

Kamina would probably join the cast of Evangelion with their depression. We are told that Kamina actually had low self-esteem, and that it was because Simon was there that he was able to smile and honestly that makes him a better character and a better duo with Simon. Simon is able to drill because Kamina is smiling and Kamina is able to smile because Simon is drilling, they both need each other. And if Simon died instead of Kamina, we could have had a much darker story

i think this is why i enjoyed Gurren Lagann and have generally avoided Evangelion, i tend to prefer more light hearted anime. and in a world that's pretty much swimming in the toilet i think more light hearted stuff is sorely needed and we need more characters like Kamina, to inspire and push us to be better and if my skills ever get good enough i might make a manga of my own and do just that

I watched evangelion quite a few years before gurren lagann and I can say that the title of this video is very accurate. After evangelion I found myself questioning the meaning of life and what reason there is to go in but after Gurren Lagann I found solace in the idea of continuing out of sheer tenacity and creating your own meaning

Man, I've always found EVA to be off in some way, but I could never tell why. This analysis has finally allowed me to make sense of this show. Well done 👍

I remember when people were guessing Tobi was obito. I rejected the idea, because I thought it was incredibly dumb. I suppose it's not surprising given every other dead character came back.

Have you had the opportunity to watch all of the Rebuild movies of Evangelion? Just like how Gurren Lagann is an answer to Eva's questions, I feel like the rebuild movies to something similar, if not break it all apart.
