SB 308: Unpacking California's Latest Carbon Removal Bill
California has adopted a suite of world-leading emissions reductions policies and programs. However, its recent net-zero mandate highlighted a clear role for carbon dioxide removal (CDR) to provide up to 15% of the total mitigation needed to achieve this goal. SB 308 (Becker) is a bill currently moving through the state Legislature that would establish the regulatory framework and foundation to achieve this CDR target. Its key provisions would require separate mandates for carbon emissions reductions and carbon dioxide removal and to “ensure the state achieves carbon dioxide removals equivalent to at least 100% of statewide greenhouse gas emissions in calendar year 2045, and all subsequen...

What Role Will Carbon Removal Play Under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement?
Просмотров 115Месяц назад
Although the Paris Agreement committed its signatories to limit global temperature increases and many countries have put forward net-zero climate targets, the carbon crediting rules under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement are still in their early stages of development for both emission reduction and carbon removal activities. But what will the balance of priorities be? The United Nations' primar...

Navigating Net Zero: Residual Emissions in National Climate Strategies
Просмотров 42Месяц назад
Net zero targets have rapidly become the new norm of national climate policy, implying a need to compensate for the remaining residual emissions through the deployment of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) methods. Yet governments are only now exploring what this balance could or should be. New research published in One Earth reveals what national governments think will be their most difficult to dec...
Sustainable Financing of Negative Emissions with a CO2 Emitter Liability
Просмотров 732 месяца назад
The gigantic volumes of carbon dioxide (CO2) removal likely needed to comply with the Paris Agreement beg the question of who should pay for the negative emissions. Incentivizing negative emissions is difficult, as it entails reversing the fiscal attractiveness associated with carbon taxes and emissions trading in favor of the more unattractive need to pay for removals. The inherent difficulty ...
Geologic Sequestration of Carbon Dioxide: The State of Responsible Primacy
Просмотров 944 месяца назад
Industrial carbon capture and carbon dioxide removal are important strategies to reach global and national net zero CO2 emissions targets and to keep global temperatures at or below 1.5°C. The most common setting for permanently sequestering CO2 after it has been captured is underground, in very deep, impermeable rock formations. To regulate and monitor the sequestered CO2, the US Environmental...
Designing a New CDR Tax Credit: Issues, Options, and Politics
Просмотров 985 месяцев назад
The emerging CDR sector requires substantial and predictable sources of public funding to scale to levels at which it can make a meaningful contribution to combatting climate change. Yet, in the United States, the existing 45Q tax credit is both too modest and too limited in scope to do the job. Modifying the 45Q credit or developing a new tech-neutral tax credit will require extensive advocacy...

Three IPCC reports since 2019 have concluded that Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) methods are needed to accompany CO2 emissions reductions if we are to limit planetary warming to 2°C or less. Concerted efforts are underway to understand the science and develop the technologies that can deliver CDR that is scalable to the billions of tons needed to abate global warming. However, the investment need...
Governing Permanence of CDR: A Typology of Policy Measures
Просмотров 1016 месяцев назад
There is an array of CDR methods, and implementation strategies need to reflect their differences, including the permanence of carbon storage of these respective approaches. Measures that govern CDR permanence are crucial for the effective scale-up and delivery of CDR, which is in turn vital to achieving net-zero targets. How the different permanence characteristics of CDR methods are incorpora...

So what I have gotten out of this webinar is that biochar needs to be made in a 0 oxygen environment and at a high tempature up to 600⁰C. The higher the tem up to max the more president the biochar. The heated biochar feed stock produces gasses and condensates that are useful. These condensates and gasses can be used as fuel to make the biochar or for products themselves. These by products reducing the cost of Biochar. Biochar is being shown to increase crop yields with or with out fertilizer inputs. Biochar plus synthetic fertilizers produces a considerable greater crop yield benefit that syn fert alone. Farmers may also be paid for applying biochar as CO² removal credit as well soil toxin removal. Can also be added to livestock feed as a benefit to the livestock and a way to get into soil through manure. Do I have this mostly right?

Hi there Here is a concept I have been posting online recently Its a global carbon tax , Where the polluters pay $ too The United Nations Global Carbon Fund UNGCF Then they distribute funds 10 billion yearly to 195 countries and territories Throughout the globe, leaving 50 billion for the UN to administer and regulate this scenario allowing us to truly fight climate change 40 GT co2 @ 50$ per tn = 2 trillion per year Take this to COP and demand action this year We need a global carbon tax and we need it now. The time for talk, BLA BLA BLA is over The planet is at a tipping point, It can't wait, Time to stand up and make a legend of yourself. Vote as one and please pass this bill Worldwide carbon tax @ 20 % carbon tariff should apply to all greenhouse gas polluters Eg 20 % on a barrel of oil Eg 20 % on a Tn of coal Eg 20 % on a kg of meat Eg 20 % on, a Tn cement produced, Eg 20 % on a Tn Steel produced. EG 20 on a tn of coal produced Etc. Etc. ETC Carbon tax worldwide Paid to a central carbon fund UNGCF. Administered and regulated by the United Nations Global Carbon Fund. UNGCF fund A 20 %of total sales of greenhouse gas Emitteing, polluters should pay for the mess Creating a yearly fund of 2 trillion dollars 40 GT @ 50$ per tn = 2 trillion per year That is 10 billion per year For 195 countries and territories, SO they can have any chance of reaching their net zero targets and fifty billion for the UNGCF, this will fund all the UN's global, humanitarian projects I am shaw you will all agree, that they deserve this fund and they do a great job and who better to perform this very in portant task for all the planet's occupants 2 trillion per year For 50 years That's 100 trillion dollars to repair climate change. That is less than 2% of the global yearly gross GDP, So we can build and create utility infrastructure for hundreds of years.I can't make it any simpler than that, please Global ambassadors help your people The countries can utilize their funds to build the infrastructure required for a clean green future carbon capture and storage facilities, organic carbon sinks Research and development into CO2 reduction technology Atmospheric reduction strategy Ocean reduction strategies The polluters must pay the free ride must end, and everyone should receive, This is a global problem and requires a global solution, all working together as one. The first 33 minutes or so was mostly graphics, sometimes with the speakers in tiny screens, sometimes none at all. I think human beings connect visually with other human beings more directly. The slides are very good of course. But then later in the Q&A we really meet the people behind the work in visual terms. I am writing a book connecting economic justice with the climate crisis, and am thinking a lot about what motivates ordinary people to get involved with the work. Certainly, human connection is important. The opening statement by James Mwangi, in particular, was extremely compelling. Putting him front and center on screen would have helped convey that message. I hope to hear more from him in the future, and from all of you, and I hope your work gets the wider audience it deserves.

DAC is not Economical viable. With stupid government free money you wouldn't even be talking about this. Their is much better sequestration in the natural Carbon cycle and you get oxygen in return.

Excellent discussion. I just want to mention that for non-specialists it might be good to spell out some of the frequently used acronyms. The initial slide presentation did a good job of that, but then more came up later on. I looked up a few of them on the fly, so it wasn't a big problem for me. But generally specialists talking among themselves can lose people pretty quickly.

The population of the earth reasonably deserves 3 things. Health care, nutritious foods and shelter. The #1 goal is reduce STOP burning carbon. Next CO2 sequestered in ultra high energy efficiency building products with solar Technology electric cars and local nutritious foods will be necessary for healthy physical and mental health. NOT THAT DIFFICULT We just need to get on with it. Cheers

Thank you for this great webinar! At the National University of Colombia, we work on research into the use of biochar for the adsorption of heavy metals and organic contaminants in soils. This information excites us very much.

Yes this fascinating to me as well. Charcoal has been used as a method of adsorption for toxins in the human gut after the ingesting toxins/poisons etc. Why would it act any differently in the soil. There are intresting papers that show it also has the ability to bind to carotenoids and Vitamin A which are commonly misunderstood as nutrients which they are not. Dr Anothy Mawson and Dr Garrett Smith have intresting things to add to this discussion.

Thanks you for this. Very important discussion. Regulation for EW is still today an unresolved issue because of the points the speaker mentioned. The aforementioned capture potentials are still a "work in progress" issue. Small correction: the carbon capture potential is not related to the silica content in the aforementioned rocks. It's rather their content in calcium and magnesium.

I think I understand the "big picture" benefits of biochar, especially in barren soils. However, I fail to see actual or signifcantly, measurable benefits to home vegetable gardeners with normal, healthy soil. Perhaps I'm wrong and while I read a lot of anecdotal claims, I have yet to find a peer-reviewed field trial that shows improved results.

    • @Soilfoodwebwarrior

I agree but have used with success. I believe that most of its benefits come from binding to toxins in your soil. Long discussion but animal manure for example contain toxins that the animals filtered out of their blood stream processed through the liver and pooped out. Could be heavy metals such as arsenic, chromium, Cooper, lead etc. I use in my composting process with great results

Make the biochar from the charcoal produced in a gasifier and you'll have an excellent soil additive and create combustible gases from the gasifier to use in power generators. A perfect closed loop renewable energy solution!!! :-)
