LoNSlo2015AT (LoNSlo)
Добавлен 22 мар 2015
My outdoor adventures hiking on the Appalachian Trail. Starting on April 4, 2015 I am starting a hike to see how far I can go on the Appalachian Trail. I will be starting at Springer Mountain. By creating this RUclips channel it will give my family and friends a chance to keep up with my journey. It may last a day of five to six months, THE ONLY EASY TRAIL WAS YESTERDAY. Thanks for taking the time to stop by. Happy trails from LoNSlo
AT Post Gear Review
This is a look at what I carried for two and a half months on the Appalachian Trail for 972 miles. This is not a in depth look at each piece of gear but just a quick look at what I carried in my backpack. Backpack with three and a half to four days food and water weighting 25 pounds 8 ounces. If I was to leave tomorrow for a long trail hike I would carry this same load and gear. Buy the lightest gear possible the first time and you will save money. There is no reason to be carrying a backpack that weights 30 pounds or more these days. Happy 4th of July everybody!

Little trail update, getting warm out, made it past 900 miles. Seeing lots of rattle snakes and someone else saw a bear. Staying at a Quality Inn at Front Royal and talking a little bit about "zero" days and logistics.
Scott Jurek Interview on the Appalachian Trail on the Move
Просмотров 2,1 тыс.9 лет назад
Been watching for Scott Jurek to catch me heading northbound on the Appalachain Trail and finally got to meet him in Virginia just past the 900 mile mark. I knew he needed to move on trying to make 50 miles/day but he still gave me a few minutes for some pics and an interview on the move before taking off trying to break the NOBO record. Watch to find out what's in Scott's pack, hint there's a ...

Leaving Dalesville headed to Waynesboro on the Appalachian Trail. With a shot inside my Zpacks tent. A quick resupply stop in Glasgow. There's a city bunkhouse campground with hot showers and a few other amenities. A little wet on this leg I talk about being wet for days at a time. DON'T SKIMP ON SOCKS! Stopped at Rockfish Gap Outfitters just outside Waynesboro.

Great video
Lol when I saw the thumbnail I thought it was angry grandpa
Hey LoNSlo2015AT, Great video . I subscribed to you! by the way, if you (or anyone else) like adventure/exploration videos, new subscribers are always welcome on my channel. youtubers unite and support eachother! : )
Is this the cult place? weird
i would like to offer my thoughts, i think the world would be a much better place if everyone drank more Moxie
DANN Hailey is an ass clown...In his rant about this place he said he was caught talking trash to his youtubers about these people cause they asked him to join the prayer circle and then after he proceeded to grab a plate? So you talk trash about someone and then break bread with them? On top of all of it you have a female pay for you? Yeah DANN hailey is a disrespectful punk..He even commented about physically hurting this Mike dude...Idk if someone offered me a meal and a place to stay i would be grateful..Hope to see you out there in 2018 woods hole..Thanks for all that you do. God Bless.
DANN Hailey is one of the most sincere and honest people Ive ever met. If you meet him youre bound to love him. Ill take his opinion over yours any day of the week.
I would assume SC EM = The husband, Michael. Don't know who else would have taken this as personal as him.
SC EM - nobody's reading this diatribe - This is a weird place pushing a weird religious vibe where you are made to feel bad if you don't go along with the cult. The wife is nice while the leach husband is a creep. He's a stalker
Wow....2years ago ..m
what pack were u using?
I used a Granite Gear Crown V.C. 60 and have used it on many other trips. Would take it again if I left today for the AT.
Thanks for the very informative video on the gear you used. But I wished you had slowed down the slide show at the beginning.
I also just found your channel. Thanks for sharing.
Don't forget to try a mason jar smoothie, Walter White approved for sure!
How do you attach your iphone to your stick pic?
Man that would be fun to run the Appalachian trail. I mean, i am not a runner, but I admire people that can run . Too many injuries when I was young. I like to walk, but I would LOVE to run.
You might be still able to. Check out the book "Born to Run"
appreciate the video! was good to see not only the gear you used that made it 1000 miles but also how it was packed
+Steve Breen Thanks for viewing Steve. If I was to leave tomorrow I would take the same thing and pack it the same way. It all worked very well.
Just saw all your vids tonight, enjoyed them very much. No mention as to why you had to quit, but the trail is always there. Good gear and packing advice!
Hey LoNSlo, love that section you're on! made a trip the first weekend of february to Carver's Gap. I'm saving up for a duplex right now and because i'm tired of my big agnes as well!
+Andrew Shomette The Big Agnes is a good tent and I will use it maybe on short trips in good weather. The ZPacks Duplex is so ez to put up and a total pleasure in the rain and very lightweight.
cliff bars are the bomb!
Thanks for the video, love to see these gear videos. Loved the comment about your wife being the Master Chief in charge of the base camp, lol. Are you prior Navy, I am a retired Master Chief, been retired 12 years and have probably 6 or 7 more years in my current job before I can retire for good, I want to thru-hike the AT when I do. I'll be 62 and hopefully in good enough health to make the trek.
great video thank you. Do you have any thoughts on water bladders vs water bottles only on the AT. I am looking for advice for my trip.
+Jon Baatz Water is very easy to come by on the AT. I used 2 and 3 Smart Water bottles. Water is the heaviest thing you should be carrying and it is easy to keep that weight down by good water management. If I started tomorrow I would start with 2 Smart Water bottles with a Swayer mini screwed to the top of 1 of them.
Awesome! Such a nice guy.
So,why did you stop hiking the trail. Your videos were full of information. Im going to hike from Georgia to Pa and then back to Georgia. I just got my new leg and foot. I had it removed for medical problems. So i dont want to take a chance of breaking my leg, then i would be Up the Creek.
+Mike Liese I hiked as long and far as I cared. When I stared my hike I did not have a thru-hike in mined which I think is very important to have. Being out there and staying out there for 5 to 6 months is 80% mental and 20% physical. Be prepared to get wet and stay wet much of the time hiking the AT. Best to you and your hike Mike !!
Love three little pigs... and it was a good spot to take a day off.
Lo, thanks so much for your informative and entertaining videos. Had a serious foot problem that caused me to cancel my 2015 thru hike attempt. Would have loved the opportunity to hike along with you for a bit this year. Hopefully, my 2016 hike will be as memorable as yours. If I could make one final request of you, it would be a video explaining how you produced your You Tube videos. I had planned to use my iPhone 5c for that purpose, too - but I'm still struggling with getting the videos into their final state and posted to You Tube. Also trying to decide if a dedicated camera is the way to go instead. Would prefer to avoid mailing a laptop along my route if I can help it. Anyway, thanks again and Happy Trails!
Mike8180 If I don't get to do a video on doing video on the AT here is a quick break down. I used a iPhone 5 and iMovie to edit. Then with iMovie, save it to my phone then login to RUclips and upload it over wifi or using my data plan. iMovie will do the login and upload too, but I found that to be more problematic. I also found that trying to upload directly to RUclips could be another problem mainly just being slow in uploading. The big big problem is uploading the video by wifi because the wifi will be very very very slow. I only found three true high speed wifi connections. One in Hiawassee GA at a hotel, Daleville VA at the Three Little Pigs restaurant, and Waynesboro VA at Starbucks. Trying to upload by wifi could take as much as 12 hours for 4 to 5 minutes of video at 720p. If you have any other cell phone service other than Verizon you want have much service which is not great too. The AT is very remote so cell service is not good no matter who you have as a service carrier and thats just trying to make a call or doing text. AT&T is your next best for service. The best way I found to upload was when I had at lest full service and LTE using my data plan I uploaded to Drop Box. Then I would have my son back home post them to RUclips for me. Hope this helps! You may want to download iMovie or which every editor of choice from the app store and play around before you go. Like tonight -LoL
LoNSlo2015AT Thank you, sir. I may have to travel down I-16 to buy you lunch and "talk shop" sometime between now and next March!
Mike8180 I love to eat not sure where you are located but we may could meet in the middle. Thanks Mike!
I love him.
lol, trust that this rock has been here for a couple thousand years
didoma73 There is know way to know for sure just a wild guess. Would have been nice if it was dated... LoL Thank for viewing didoma73.
Congrats on your hike..Thanks so much for sharing your entire adventure. Your videos were great, the information was informative and I hope you make other videos in the future maybe showing what your gear and the sacks looked like set up or something along that line. I don't recall seeing your cooking method other then your spoon, maybe you could touch on that. Having the tent on the outside of your bag seemed very logical esp. as you said if it was raining and you needed to get set up fast. Maybe you could show the set up of your tent. Anyway thanks so much for what you have shared and hope to see more videos of you hiking and equipment.
Vonnie McB Thanks I'll looking into doing a breakdown in more detail soon.
Thank you so much for sharing so much of your experience! I enjoyed every minute!
The Hungry Hungry Hyker I see you are planing a hike this coming spring. Look to the many hikers who have done the long trails. Save up and buy the lightest equipment out there and look to the cottage industry more than the big name companies.
Great gear list that is tested and took you almost 1000 miles. I know it's early, but do you have plans to start where you left-off next year? Looking forward to more videos.
Loner2012AT I give thought of going back this year maybe in mid August and start at Katahdin and go south to Front Royal VA. I could finish the AT in mid November that way this year. The Benton MacKaye is the trail I have looked at for the past two year and want to do more than the AT. I like the idea of doing/starting the BMT in September and try to do lots more video of the BMT. There is not much video of the BMT. Thanks to people like you my gear I left home with worked very good. I weighed in at Springer at 24lb less the two bottles of water. If I would have known my knees would have worked that good I would have left with the ZPacks tent. That was my big change other than the water filter. I seen way to many people having to buy new gear on the trail because of bad choices to begin with. Then they buy the wrong gear again b/c of bad advice from outfitters. They are into sales, it's best to look to the people who have done long trails right here on RUclips. Thanks Loner!!
+LoNSlo2015AT (LoNSlo) you are so right about watching these youtube vids from folks that have already done the long trails as they can save us all from a LOT of needless extra weight and bad choices!! And thank YOU so much for making this vid of your gear that made it. My dream is to do the AT in 2017 or 18 but I have such bad knees I'm not sure how far I will get. But it is my numero uno bucket list item so were there's a will there has to be a way... right LoNSlo2015? my hat is off to you dude for doing your hike and congrats!
972 miles! Excellent! first time i have seen one of those seatpads, we need those!! lots of good info here, thanks for showing us what you carried
potatothorn You can check the seat pad out at REI.com it is a Therm-a-Rest Z seat Pad best $15 you can spend. Thanks potatothorn! www.rei.com/product/829881/therm-a-rest-z-seat-pad
LoNSlo2015AT me, my Mom, and my lady friend will have them by the end of the week this is exactly what we've been missing cant believe i never saw one before thanks so much
potatothorn You guys will enjoy them for sure! Happy trail...
LoNSlo2015AT can not thank you enough for the tip about the z-seat- literally turns a hard cold rock into a soft warm chair. Used them in Kings Canyon National park and on Mt. Whitney where it is seriously cold, was absolutely amazing how warm these seats are, i mention you in my videos because of them (and your hikes) thanks again
Thanks for the video and good ideas. Interesting comment about heavy items to the bottom. Almost all "experts" recommend that heavier items go midway up you pack and as close to your back as possible with light rarely used items (sleeping bag, tent) at he bottom and lighter more used items surrounding the heavier as you move up the pack. I also found it interesting that you were good the whole time with a 30 degree bag. I went with a 22 degree (EN) for next year. I think the 30 pound threshold is a great piece of advice starting with keeping your big 3 (pack, shelter and sleeping system) under 10 pounds while keeping the sleep system pack volume down too (I recall an 8 or 9 cubic liters target?). Why did you leave the trail?
Molon Labe The bad thing about putting your tent at the bottom of a backpack is, at the end of the day you want to setup and its raining you must pull everything out into the rain to get to your tent. I tie my tent to the bottom of the outside of my backpack, which is at the bottom you could say -LoL. My Zpack Duplex tent only weights around 21.5 ounces. Its not a heavy piece of gear. Your food and water will/should always be the heaviest thing your carrying. My food bag with 4 days of food could weigh around 8 to 9 lb. which is as much as my base weight. Being it only dropped down to 28/29 degrees a couple of nights I could put my base layer bottoms on and be fine. You can always put your jacket on too. If I would have left in March I would have needed to carried warmer and more clothes. I left the trail because I was just not enjoying the hike because of the heat, humidity, rain and bugs. I live down south where all these factors are everyday life so I normally do my outdoor activities in cooler weather ie fall and winter. I'm sure I will regret leaving the trail many times my body and performance was doing very well for someone my age. My last day hiking was into Front Royal VA and I did a 26.5 mile day and had many other days that was 18 plus miles. There was no reason I could not have gone all the way to Katahdin. I did not set out to do a thur-hike and it for sure is very important to have your heart and mind set on a thur-hike before you leave home and remind yourself everyday along the way. It's 80% between the ears... not in the body there are little kids out there doing a thur-hike. Thanks for all your comments and viewing my videos.
Molon Labe The "experts" do recommend putting your heavier things to the bottom and close to your back. Being I carry my tent on the bottom and then my food bag I think that is around middle with my load. The tent is outside but the load is about the same. First things first with rules, know the rules well, then you can break them. Great point about the load, THANKS.
LoNSlo2015AT Thank you for the videos and taking the time to share your experiences and knowledge. Your point about burying your tent in the pack is a good point. I might put my tent, air pad (Klymit Static V2) and Klymit air pillow in my sleeping bag compartment if my new bag is too big. This would make it more accessible as you point out. Appreciate the Sawyer filter info too! I'm gonna use the Mini myself. Good to hear you made the decision to leave the trail and it wasn't an injury or anything serious, it was on your terms. You'll be back out there someday, I think. Thanks again!
Molon Labe Thanks for all your info and watching my vid's.
This is a quick look at what I was carrying for 2.5 months for 972 miles. If you have any questions please ask. If you would like to see a more detail video review on any of my gear please ask too. Thanks everybody!!!
+LoNSlo2015AT (LoNSlo) Thank YOU Lo and I too am really glad that you left on your own terms not the body failing or something other. Happy new year 2016!
'Can't wait for the gear review! Thanks for sharing your hike with all of us!
The Hungry Hungry Hyker Hope to have it up this week. Thanks for stopping by!
Great tour, it looks like a great place for a rest and maybe learn some green living ideas to take home. Thanks for showing us!
Loner2012AT It is a great place to stay I stopped by on my way home for another say. Best hostel I seen on my hike! Thanks Loner!
That was an awesome place you showed, thanks for all the info you shared.
Vonnie McB Well worth visiting even if your not hiking and just passing by the area. My pleasure, it truly is a great place to stay Vonnie McB.
Thank you again...Safe travels.
Very cool spot. I hope to visit someday.
SmackNC By far the best hostel I seen along the AT. Thanks for viewing SmackNC!
Lo, so sorry to hear that you had to leave the trail. I hope it was a personal choice and not due to a family emergency, injury or poison oak contact (I am SUPER allergic to poison oak and poison ivy myself, so if you are too, I feel your pain). I was going to request that you do a comprehensive gear review soon - especially since my gear list is very, very close to your original one with the exception of the fact that I'll be using a hammock / tarp combo instead of a tent. Safe travel home and I'll be looking for your next video.
900/ WOW. views look Great, we're on a big screen and your camera is doing a fine job of capturing the view- PS- TECHNU soap- might be worth it for you to carry some - if you wash with cold water and technu within 3 hrs of touching poison oak/ivy/sumac, you wont get a rash. I use it often, it works really well even after chopping poison oak by hand for hours.
potatothorn It's amazing how good of video you can get out of a iPhone 5 that is 3.5 year old using iMovie. If I come in contact with it I'll give it a try, thanks. I know how to ID it and just avoid it. I wear long pants and shirts. Thanks for viewing!
Congrats on 900 miles. That's just amazing. It's tough for me to drive that far let alone walk it. Keep up the good work!
SmackNC You can do it even if it's only 10 mile. Get out and hike!
Watch out for them snakes! They might be scaring all the bears away. Congrats on 900 miles! That's awesome. Hitching is tuff sometimes. Keep trucking!
Loner2012AT Loner thanks! I'v hike as far as I wanted this time and have left the AT in Front Royal. It was a fun journey of 972 miles. Had a great time and met a lot of wonderful people on the trail. I should have left at Waynesboro VA but the AT has a way of pulling you in... Hope to get a gear review up soon on what I was using after 2.5 months and around a 1000 miles walked over all.
LoNSlo2015AT Congrats on 1000 miles! You had a great hike. Looking forward to the gear video but going to miss your updates - and am sure you'll miss the trail. But like they say - the trail will always be there. Thanks for sharing your hike with everyone.
pretty cool, celebrity meetup! -you know you are as much a celeb as he is LoNSlo....
potatothorn Not me but he is one awesome runner! 50 plus miles a day on the AT.
Cool interview!
Loner2012AT Scott is a great guy and I think he has what it takes to set a new record.
Congrats on your encounter!!!
Vonnie McB Thanks was so cool meeting him and he was very kind to stop and do photos them a moving interview.
cool be safe and keep on hiking
That was great, he is really moving on !!!!!!!
mikkat50 50 plus miles a day. I think he will set the bar high.
Thanks for the update. Keep up the good work.
Good advice about shoes and socks. Feet take a beating when hiking and are often the biggest obstacle to a successful finish. One pair of sock liners and 1/4 height Darn Tough hiking socks at 2.3 ounces (large) each pair isn't too much economically or weight wise for their importance. I'm gonna carry 3 pairs of Darn Toughs, designating one pair strictly as sleeping/glove use if I need more warmth than just glove liners. I bought the 3 different colors so I can differentiate. Good luck and keep the positive attitude!
