    For agricultural-land clearing operations, can your device detect big boulders that are subsurface? Boulders which are hidden and in about a foot deep underground which is a depth where farm tillage equipment might come in contact with them. Also, a ripper attachment on a bulldozer might collide with the boulders. Ideally, the GPR will have a laser which will paint an outline of the boulders on the ground so that a skid steer with pincer forks can stab into the ground and lift out the boulder. For the soil/bedrock ripper the bulldozer can go around the more deeply buried boulder.

    Can it detect underground tunnels? How deep can it detect objects?

    • @AltoMaxxTech
      @AltoMaxxTech 7 месяцев назад

      Yes! GPR can identify tunnels or cavitations underground. As for depth, this figure varies, and is heavily dependent on characteristics of the ground. For more information reach out to one of our GPR specialists here: www.altomaxx.com/contact-us/

    How deep on the ground can it detect, like on soil or concrete?

    • @AltoMaxxTech
      @AltoMaxxTech 7 месяцев назад

      It’s difficult to provide exact figures, as the penetration depth of the GPR signal depends greatly upon the soil conditions of each site. It also depends upon the frequency of the sensor you are using. We have both mid-frequency and low-frequency drone GPR units, but they’re used for very different applications. Is this system capable of detecting a change in pipe size? say from 12 inch to 10 inch?

    • @AltoMaxxTech
      @AltoMaxxTech 11 месяцев назад

      The system should be able to detect such a change in exterior pipe dimensions. This would be observed in post-processing as a change in the hyperbola width as the GPR signal reflects off the pipe.

    how does it do on hilly terrain? I live on an island that has trees and major hillsides and would love to use this product to find piping with septic systems.

    • @AltoMaxxTech
      @AltoMaxxTech 11 месяцев назад

      The drone GPR system is equipped with a laser altimeter that allows it to fly in True Terrain Following mode, enabling it to maintain a constant height above the ground, hugging the terrain as it flies over hills and other surface features. Trees, however, present an obstacle for any GPR system because they reflect the GPR signal and prevent it from penetrating the ground. It is possible to pre-plan your drone GPR flights to avoid wooded areas, or even to fly manually to navigate around trees. However, it is not advisable to conduct drone GPR above the forest canopy. Firstly, flying from such a height would greatly diminish the penetration depth and resolution of the GPR signal. Secondly, in many jurisdictions Ground Penetrating Radar cannot legally be used above a specified altitude (For example, 1 meter is the max GPR altitude in Canada and the US). This height restriction is easily handled with the True Terrain Following mode of the drone GPR system but would typically mean you cannot fly above treetops. If you have any further questions about the realities of using drone GPR, please don't hesitate to reach out! www.altomaxx.com/contact-us/

    Assuming that the drone is where the GPS position is taken, how do you account for the horizontal difference in the position of the drone versus the position of the sensor. This would be particularly critical in a stream where the echosounder might be horizontally offset by several feet.

      My first thought as well, I would love to hear an answer to this.

    • @bosanova1643
      @bosanova1643 Год назад

      I believe you are asking too much. There is surely an answer. However, for those like me who have experienced the traditional bathymetry of hard labor on a poor little leaking canoe, I can assure you that this system has the merit of existing! :D Next, regarding the sensor's offset, the calculations to approximate its planimetric position don't seem too complicated. You know the tether's length, the z-coordinate of the drone, and thus the z-coordinate of the water at the time of immersion, etc. But indeed, we can see the infamous 'saw teeth' on the slopes in the renderings, which clearly show the disregard for horizontal offset. By using a clean slope or a regular launching ramp, and by making a round trip in the direction of the slope, we can very easily recover the towing offset constant.

    • @AltoMaxxTech
      @AltoMaxxTech 11 месяцев назад

      Thanks for your question! The drone is indeed where the GPS position is taken, so the sensor where the data is recorded may be offset somewhat. However, there are several ways to reconcile this discrepancy. Firstly, the drone is pre-programmed to fly at a set height above the surface, and the sensor is attached to a tether with a known length. Secondly, there is a tilt sensor attached to the echo sounder that records its angle relative to the y-axis for each data point. This tilt angle is used during post-processing to remove data points where the sensor tilted too far, or to calculate and correct the horizontal offset of the GPS location. You can read more about it in this whitepaper: integrated.ugcs.com/files/bathymetry/bathymetry-using-uav-accuracy-concerns.pdf

    Current or weather not a problem, sure, but what about marine debris... logs and deadheads for example?

    • @AltoMaxxTech
      @AltoMaxxTech Год назад

      The bathymetry sensor is tethered to the drone but is only submerged approximately 9 inches while collecting data, making it less likely to hit debris that is submerged beneath the surface. As well, there is a “grasshopper mode” where the drone dips the sensor at select points rather than drags it through the water. This might be an option if debris is a concern. If you have other questions, feel free to reach out! www.altomaxx.com/contact-us/

    sounds convenient, but how much better are sonar scans with a device that actually touches the ground?

    • @AltoMaxxTech
      @AltoMaxxTech Год назад

      The real advantage of using drones for this type of data acquisition is that it allows for the scanning of areas that cannot be accessed by other tools, or large areas where typical methods would be inefficient. For magnetometry (and GPR/sonar) scans, our drones can fly along the surface at a very low, predetermined altitude. This provides quality data that is sufficient for most applications. While having a ground-coupled system gives optimal data, collecting this level of data is often not necessary or practical. So, it really depends on what you’re scanning and what you’ll be using the data for! If you have any other questions or would like to discuss if drone data acquisition is right for your needs, please get in touch! www.altomaxx.com/contact-us/
