@triomerak Actually the distinction between xylophone and marimba/vibraphone is crucial here, and what I said earlier pertains to the marimba/vibraphone only. The same arrangement with a xylophone will have a completely different lineup of overtones, without those odd-sounding intervals. So, sorry about the confusion indeed. As for the overtone science, it's simple enough: marimba/vibraphone tone bars are carved to favor the 4th and 10th partials (harmonics), witch are respectively two octaves and three octaves plus a major third above the fundamental (root tone). If you have a piano playing alongside the marimba/vibraphone, the marimba/vibraphone's fundamental and lower partials will be overwhelmed by those of the piano, leaving only the 10th partial - which will come across as an instrument playing three octaves up and two whole steps (i.e. a major third) off key. With a xylophone, the tone bars will have weak higher partials but a strong 3rd partial (an octave and a fifth above the root tone), which should allow it to hold its ground against the piano - and even if not, Misirlou will sound more or less agreeable with a strong overtone that consistently sounds a fifth apart from the main melody, rather than a major third. Here's an article worth reading: orchestrationonline.com/orchestration-tip-harmonic-spectra-of-xylophone-vs-marimba/ Long story short: whenever the vibraphone plays tremolo on E2 (e.g. at the start of the piece), it comes across as a tremolo on G#4, especially if the piano is playing E2 as well. For the root note it's OK, seeing as G# is part of the E major chord, but then the same major-third interval persists throughout the melody, and that's where it starts sounding off-key.
