LOTR is the GOAT
Good to know there is another Blanc fan (using French title to avoid sounding like a neo-nazi). I love all three, but always enjoyed Zbigniew Zamachowski's comedic performance and the absurdity of Karol's situation, and its resolution, so much.
Newman's performance in Hombre is also exceptional - This too direc. by Martin Ritt and Written bv Irving Ravetch
Great video! One of my favorite film podcasts, Scene By Scene, discussed this earlier this year. They covered it so well, excellent discussion!
" ... two David's with broken slingshots." Nice turn of phrase.
Great review thx. And yr absolutely delightful and articulate. Oprah will scoop you up. .
lotr is best. come on. this is nr 2 though
Saw this many times over the years and once again today. This was wonderful. The main characters were likeable but fell into an irresistible trap. I can see similarities of this movie with Double Indemnity (DI), though Phyllis in DI seemed like a conniving psychopath while Cora seemed genuine. Ending reminded me of A Place in the Sun. Both men admitted their guilt and were resigned to accept punishment. Agree about Hume Cronyn who added so much.
The movie Hud is a complicated story just as life itself.Yes the ffg film is made into a screenplay from the novel. There are two schools of thought in the film from the Bible the old testament an eye for a eye or the new testament turn the other cheek.Lonnie is put in a difficult situation di I follow the philosophy of my grandfather or my uncle Hud.What complicates the story it is implied Hud was born a badtard out of wedlock and does not feel loved by his father. There is constant contention between HUD and his father and Lon is in the middle listening to both. The bond continue to build between Hud and Lonnie up until the fight scene in the bar. When Hus confronted Homer his father "I wasnt a bundle left on your doorstep "Hud was telling his father he wanted his love. The bond between HUD and Lonnie during the potential rape scene when Lonnie came to Alma's rescue but the bond had with his nephew remain as HUD couldn't strike Lonnie with his fist. The reason HUD is so complicated because most human beings are like Hud as stated by Lonnie after Lonne felt that Hommet confronted HUD and told Hud ,'Boy I was sick of you long before that"referring to the car accident that killed his brother. In the end Lonnie embrace the new testament but he was short sighted because he abandon HUD when HUD needed him.But is shows we all need love over anything else when Hud asked Lonnie to stay on the ranch with him in the ending scene.
Wow Wonderful analysis of a movie whose speeches have been a very compelling ( esp MJ Fox speech about leadership and our hunger for it) I think since movies are always in context of the current real life events we can only suspend belief if they show a way of dealing with life events ( Dark Knight after 9/11) or tackle topics not yet brought to bear by real life( like you have mentioned Lewinsky’s case would not allow this movie to have been done in the period) Movies allow us to believe the best of ourselves for the most part.
Sir, you speak very well, a good communicator! Loved "The Best of Everything"
I came from MÉXICO in 1964 I see this movie some time in 1965 I was familiar with American actors Paul Newman was one of them,my English wasn’t very good so there was a language barrier,..let mi jump to 2024 I just finish watching the movie again and I was surprised to see the content of it and i said he was kind of cold blooded to everyone in that movie ….great Acting…he was my favorite actor I am 79 now .🇺🇸🇲🇽🌹❤️
I love your objective analysis of "Fat City". It is one of my favourite films and amazes me that the Academy was "reserved" in awarding it the accolades that it justly deserves. When it first came out, the advert was that this is the film that John Huston always wanted to make. Characterizations are superb. It should have been in black and white though.

Great! movie! I have the Indicator UK release.
When I first watched theses films, 20 years ago, I said to myself: “that’s it - there is nothing else - this is cinema” O never seeing anything else that explores the medium to that level that go beyond books, poetry, painting, opera, anything. It’s a treasure.
FYI DeWilde is pronounced "duh Will duh"
I saw them when they first were released, and they have been a part of my imagination ever since.
Just watched it today and it is already my 5th favorite movie of all time.
Great review! I'm excited to finally watch this movie.
I agree that Lana's entrance in this film might be one of the most stunning and convincing character entrances in any film of the era, you can literally see Garfield's breath being taken away when they cut back to him as he lazily meanders her way to pick up the lipstick. lol I will say that Rita Hayworth's entrance in Gilda, which is a film that was released the same year as Postman, is just as mesmerizing. That's a film that I believe you'd enjoy, but aside from the 1981 version of Postman, if you want a cool comparison and contrast take a peek at Double Indemnity from 1944 starring Fred MacMurray and Barbara Stanwyck, very similar themes. I really enjoy your review for Postman, it's wonderful and really insightful. I'm a huge Lana fan too and it doesn't get much better than Postman film if you want to highlight her.
The scene between Homer and Hud and Lonnie where Homer tells Hud "No boy, I was sick of you a long time before that" perfectly encapsulates today's society. Hud is a sociopath. He does not give a damn. And Homer's berating of him in that scene is timeless. Melvyn Douglas was perfectly cast. BTW, these characters were players in McMurtry's first novel, "Horseman, Pass By," although Alma (Patricia Neal) was Halmea in the book, and her name and race were changed for the film. Other changes (for the better, I would argue) were also made in the remarkable screenplay written by Ravetch and Frank.
Happy birthday to stacy on 2nd june yeh still my favourite
the best trilogy OAT is lord of the rings
Maybe, but the Apu trilogy is quite good. Also, one must take into consideration the loose trilogies of various auteurs such as Bergan's Trilogy of Faith: Through a Glass Darkly, Winter Light, and Silence.
I love this film for it's bravery in depicting a man who is just loathsome and is not redeemed in any way at the end. It defies our wishes to see him change and become better.Because in reality this is the way some people are. No growth, no new insights. I personally like Newman much more in Cool Hand Like, where he is a lovable troublemaker who is also trapped by circumstances and fate.
NO redeeming features to the character and yet it is worth remembering the exquisite Elmer Bernstein opening score to Hud is titled 'The Lonely Man'. That title hints at something hidden and sad in the character.
It was great for me to "discover" you today on Grays of Westminster. I loved this essay. I was a teenager when HUD hit the big screens. I've got to go watch it again after seeing your review.
Sunset Boulevard is indeed a masterpiece. My favorite film of all times is chariots of fire from 1981
Susan Tyrell got an Oscar nomination for supporting actress and Stacy Keach was considered for best actor at the New York Film Critics Awards. Your review was excellent!
Thank you for giving Hud the recognition it deserves. I wish more peiple were aware of this film. Massive bonus points to you for giving Patricia Neal her props. One of my favorite actresses of all time.
Love Paul Newman, love Hud, love McMurtry's "Horseman Pass By," love this review. Subscribed.
Great analysis and review. Just watched for the first time last night and loved it! Always looking for good film/movie suggestions. Especially old time classics. Thx.
Cool Hand Luke, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, The Hustler The Sting. Paul Newman's acting was just poor genius, they don't make actors like him anymore. You kind of wonder what happened to Hud after that door slammed shut at the end of the movie. I think he was afraid of being alone and his worst fear came to be.
It's bewildering seeting how so many people saw this movie as something to aspire to instead of being the warning that it was/is intended to be.
❤ this 1
Stacy is a guid actor
Watched early this year i like stacy hes sexy
Red is my favorite movie of all times.
Both 'Blue' and 'Red' are in my top 4 of the 90s. They're incredible films.
Excellent review. Insightful. It's nice to see a member of the younger generation hook on to a classic. Would have been worth pointing out the work of James Wong Howe, one of the top cinematographers of all time. Please read Horseman Pass By. You won't regret it.
Nah man it really really isn’t, it’s very average
Picnic movie squeal 2 would be great with William Holden and mage getting married shirtless yes 🎉
London❤1965 on 🧊 ice
Thank you. I wish more people outside of former USSR know about it.
My left ear loved this video
I thought that maybe Hud was Homer's illegitimate son. Some of the dialog implies that. He was a very pained character. Deep pain .. "you don't know the whole story".
It’s great, but I think White stops it from being placed in the mythical realm which it is often placed. Blue and Red are among the best films ever made, but White is merely “good.”
@@lightgatha Right.
Each film is the best at one aspect of other, but White is the best overall. The only reason it seems to suffer in some people's eyes is because it's the most Polish & therefore not everyone is familiar with the reference points & the things it is trying to say.
I like how the film doesn't treat it like he's cool for being an asshole. It shows the reality of being an asshole.
Great commentary.... You helped me look at this movie in a whole different way... I like that. We know he lied about being in Florida from the begining of the movie. Then Irene Dunne figures it out with the California stamped orange. I had always assumed that Irene Dunne was inocent and that her story to her husband was true. I never thought of them as phillandering but a victim of apperances. Your insight makes me look at things a bit different...what if Irene dunne was cheating....Mr. Grant too. I am not sure I buy it but it makes me look at the film differently. Thank you.
As someone who grew up in the 1950's, I have on disc all the '50's melodramas you mentioned, and I like them all for the kinds of reasons you discussed. If you haven't already seen it, you might also want to check out HILDA CRANE (1956), which is available in excellent picture quality on RUclips. It's a variant on PEYTON PLACE before the movie of that name came out in 1957. Great review!
