      @@VileVamp Rewatching it, I was speaking a little too off-the-cuff when I said, "my special headphone pad stand." I should've mentioned it was one of the stands for my green backdrop and I was using one of the plastic clamps that came with it to keep the pads from falling. Any vertical pipe-style stand would do: backdrop / microphone stands; tripods; anything vertical. Get little plastic spring clamps at any hardware/dollar store or Amazon. Like these: a.co/d/cKgeowP. There are a million ways to do it. You'd just want to be sure the pad is resting evenly across its surface-not hanging by a single point-so it doesn't stretch while drying. Good luck! Let me know how it goes for your pads!

      @@vektacular That's too bad. Curious how you were you using it in hip-hop: Vocal reverb? On the whole mix? Hip-hop certainly requires its own unique approach to effects. Its spectrum is often more distinctly banded (with SO much low-end energy) than, say, rock , and we often don't want to hear obvious reverb on the lead vocals. I should try Sound City on a hip-hop mix and see what results I get. Perhaps a follow-up the next time they announce a fire-sale on Sound City?🤔 Thanks for watching and commenting.

    This nothing like Soothe. Much fewer and broader bands makes this more of a tonal shaper, where Soothe 2 is a surgical resonance suppressor with thousands of bands. Soothe 2 also has online and offline oversampling control, band solo, and left/right mid/sode processint cotnrol per band. I had the same thought, but couldn't think of a compressor that acts quite like it. The traditional model keeps GR as a percentage/ratio. Whereas in Krossbow, the actual ratio must be changing to reach that GR floor. I certainly can't get any comp/limiter I have to act quite like it. Check my previous demo of it, where I mathematically level a wildly dynamic vocal using it (and see why I asked Carp for a lookahead function too!) ruclips.net/video/3wEUjFHcZ20/видео.htmlsi=hfkq5hWmEGDXX6tT&t=328 What really drew me to Krossbow is that it makes dialling-in your attack / release settings so easy when it's set to exreme GR-then just bring up the Max GR needle till it sounds reasonable. Bam! Or leave it at extreme settings to become a transient designer. It feels like how I "see" ideal dynamic reduction happening. They've got a demo, so give it a try and see what you think. I don’t think the Pultech MEQ5 sounds different because of the picture. I think it sounds different because by turning a couple Knobs o got a very cool snare sound and a very cool acoustic sound using it. Plus it’s repeatable.

    What I ended up doing for mine was I removed the pads and did a dish soap soak for an hour before heavily scrubbing them. Then I took a soft bristle toothbrush (the kind you can get at a dollar store) and I used that to lightly brush away at the under pad in small circles. You don't press in with force but you just lightly graze it with circular motions and it actually helps pull out the dust and debris from the black fabric cover.

    So, I purchased this and it does appear to the be the real deal. My only issue is that it only handles ONE resonant frequency at a time (not counting "octave" harmonics). Unless I'm plain wrong, I am under the impression that there might be three or four frequencies that could be causing trouble at any given time, and to tackle this, I'm forced to create multiple instances of the plugin on my chain in sequence. I am wondering if I am making a mistake doing this, or if it wouldn't have been an improvement to implement this as a multi-band plugin that would allow you to handle more than one resonant frequencies in the same plugin instance. I realize Smoothe 2 and Reso do that, but this is so darn clean and I'm loving the manual control! Thoughts?

    • @dahlhousestudios
      @dahlhousestudios 2 месяца назад

      I've had the exact same thoughts! My biggest wish with the plug is that it would dip down to, say, 500Hz-just in case that reso is happening at, say, 970Hz! I too was often finding that I needed to add a couple instances on some tracks. This is no big deal, as long we're careful with the little bells-and-whistles buttons (the exciter, for instance, creates pretty serious aliasing-so you wouldn't want to have a bunch of that on a track). As long as you don't engage any of the saturation, you can load as many of these as you want (though feel free to mess around with the Compensate/Excite/Q buttons in the final instance of DeRes in your chain)! At its core, DeRes is a simple digital EQ, just with a whacky Q of 20, and some alleged exclusive methods to minimise artefacts. I was never able to fully null DeRes with other EQs though it was VERY close. You could also use DeRes to identify resonances, then cut all the resonances in any digital EQ that can make Q-factors that high (many can't). In any of these cases, we'd want to keep the ears open, listening for any odd phase issues etc. Cutting resonances is one of the age-old secret skills that the pros have always used. All that being said, at some point I recommend ignoring everything I said above! It's always the same rule: try to stick to good principles as you set up your mix, but once you've got a good balance, whatever sounds good, IS good! Thanks for commenting and watching!

      @@producer_randu5228 What do you mean by "unison"? Direct monitoring? Insert path for external hardware? Delay compensation? As I noted in my review, LUNA is horrible with sync. Visuals stop matching audio as soon as you add plugins. So if one were to use hardware, it would be through a series of busses and you'd have to compensate for delay manually. Does that help?

    Ive always had the impression these kind of plugins were mostly gimmick...basically just applying filters/eq's and IR's. I guess ill have to try it before judging.

    • @dahlhousestudios
      @dahlhousestudios 2 месяца назад

      I think the same way you do. But the proof is in the pudding. I imagine one could recreate the *general* tone with a couple reverbs, EQs, compressors, and saturation, but like the "All EQs are the same," argument, at some point it becomes such a ludicrous proposition once there's one plugin that does it all with minimal tweaking. To me, this one achieves that. I'm sure it IS "just applying filters and IR," but the lengths they've gone to: getting tone from original tapes; having the OG engineers there to explain technique; modelling the whole path from speaker to mic to console to gear…it would just be a dog's age to get something this convincing lined up with plugins in-the-box (not to mention an insane CPU suck). My next plan is to try sinking an entire mix into it, as if the band played in the room! Oh! And to try a literal re-mikin by sending a DI guitar through it. Thanks for watching and commenting (and especially the trust!)

  • @jsmacks11
    @jsmacks11 2 месяца назад

    The main thing "analog" plugins gets you are speed and convenience. I think a Pro Q3 can do pretty much anything EQ wise but sometimes that can slow you down especially if there is a curve you know you want that could be easily done with an analog modeling plugin, that could take many moves on a Pro Q3. I think he is more right on EQs, his methodology seems to fall apart even more with compressors. Analog modeling plugins are designed more for quick results and sweet spots. I think a great digital compressor can give you more sonic options but it would also give you more options to sound bad and would require more familiarity with the plugin.

    For re mic mode on drums are you sending to an FX bus to mix wet/dry or just putting it on the drum bus?

    • @dahlhousestudios
      @dahlhousestudios 2 месяца назад

      @@PinkNoPinkBand Generally speaking, the re-mic mode will be used on your drum bus-with all the direct mics routed to that bus. In re-mic mode, Sound City will completely replace the dry signal with the emulated speaker and mic"direct signal", as if you literally played the signal through two speakers in the room. Reverb mode is the send version, with no direct mic tone. That being said, you can totally choose what goes to a Sound City bus, insert it on individual drums, or even run it in parallel.
