Our Crash Course in Limestone, Cast Stone & Masonry Details | Workshop Garage Ep. 8
Finding the perfect stone is hard. Installing it right is harder. Our search for full depth stone took us on an unexpected journey as we visited Cottonwood Falls, KS. We found out what is, and isn't, in our budget. This led to unexpected changes with our siding, and introduced us to architectural cast stone.
Shopping and designing for cast stone means finding a mason, mortar, side profile, color, installation and flashing details and more.

    22ga 12" panel with foam backer rod is the best way to reduce oil canning with a flat pan panel. Striations help but some do not like the look of the striations. Flat beads and pencil ribs don't do much. There are floating clip systems that raise the panels from the roof slightly, these help reduce oil canning as well. It's natural, it looks good. I have seen much worse.

    Great video. So many factors when it comes to oil canning. I’d say I’ve seen alot worse. Good thing oil canning doesn’t affect the performance and you will never need to do that roof ever again. If you plan on staying there awhile it was a great long term investment. Also looks like there would be a lot of wind there. Shingles would not stand a chance in the middle of an open area. Great choice of material. One thing that will put your mind at ease is that the paint will lose its sheen over time becoming more flat. Oil canning will present less and less over the years and you will be so glad you went this route. Thanks for posting. Great edits. Super hot topic in the architectural sheet metal industry! Been in the industry for 20 years, and can say oil canning is completely normal! As the roof and building settles, and the sheen of the black paint gets worn down to be less glossy, the oil canning will be much much less visible. We try to be upfront with our clients to inform them that oil canning WILL be a thing on there standing seam metal roof. These guys have a nice video explaining oil canning ruclips.net/video/iTP3L4sUvYc/видео.html

    • @bellrisefarm
      @bellrisefarm 4 месяца назад

      Good to know it might improve over time! We did watch that video before the roof went on, and I think there is the idea that if you do the right thing, oil canning will be minimal. Then you see pictures of gorgeous roofs in good lighting and it reinforces that idea. It’s probably best to go into it assuming oil canning will be there no matter what, and be pleasantly surprised if it isn’t.

    • @karlhakkarainen9553
      @karlhakkarainen9553 4 месяца назад

      Unfortunately i feel that a lot of people feel mislead in the same way you were, that oil canning will be "minimal", technically this could be true as its not oil canning all hours of the day. I hope our industry can get comfortable having the conversations before hand, saying that it highly likely will oil can. If it makes you feel any better, when using some of the highest end materials such as zinc and copper they oil can alot more than your steel roof. Zinc and copper could be up to 3 times more than steel in cost, and you get quadruple the oil canning.

  • @andrewmueller9975
    @andrewmueller9975 4 месяца назад

    G90 would refer to the material coating under the paint, determined by steel mills salt test. This roof will last forever at G90 grading. For material hardness standing seam must use a 50-55 yield tensile strength (hardness) this is softer than the barn style exposed fastener panels that use high tensile 80 yield. Standing seam may crack and split if high tensile is used because of the sharp bends to create the profile. You did the right thing adding the rib in the center and going to 24 gauge steel which should have removed any oil canning potential. Maybe the machine was not set up correctly, or the roof was not 100% flat. Sometimes a slight moon shape can cause this asthe panels done lay perfectly flat. I would definitely ask the manufacturer about the tensile they used. Project looks good, will be following!

    • @bellrisefarm
      @bellrisefarm 4 месяца назад

      Appreciate the clarification! We definitely did not check on tensile strength.

  • @MattHartley-hy1gc
    @MattHartley-hy1gc 4 месяца назад

    Hey guys! Love this. I have over 30 years in the architectural sheet metal trade and I can tell you that this is completely normal. You can do some things to reduce oil-canning; but you can never eliminate it completely. 22 gage with striations is the best you can do with standing seam panels and even then you will get oil-canning. But it is still way better than exposed fastener corrugated panels. You rock!

    • @bellrisefarm
      @bellrisefarm 3 месяца назад

      @@CollingFilms We don't have experience with foam, so can't help you there. Maybe someone else can chime in. Neighbors in our area have 29 gauge siding and it looks fine. However, it is the type you find at Menards -- large striations / ribs. If you went with hidden fastener, flatter panels then I would be worried with 29 gauge.

    One mistake you made that is very common is that you laid the panels flat on the roof sheathing. When they heat up during the day, the heat is trapped on the backside. To avoid that, you put furring strips diagonally on top of the shark skin. That gap allows air flow on the back side of the metal and keeps it cool.

    • @bellrisefarm
      @bellrisefarm 4 месяца назад

      We discussed that but the roofer wouldn’t do it. Unfortunately the panels weren’t rated for the span so it’s probably the right call. Over at GreenBuildingAdvisor it’s always debated if the ventilation is worth it. Would be nice to try it one day though considering our outcome.

It looks like even though it is matte black it still had a glossy paint finish in which will show every little ripple in the panels. all those issues are fixed with the quest 3 people made tuns of apps for it such as simlab and sketch vr, since the quest does have actual controllers it works perfecly, i can make a whole house in an hour instead of 5 due to how easy it its when you have 3 dimentions

    explort to stl and load in one of those 3d model apps

    I figured out how to export and walk through. You export as a ".usdz" (You need a 3rd party exporter like SImLab). Then save the file in an iCloud folder your Vision Pro can access. Select the saved usdz file. Place it. Now this is where I was previously stuck. It will only put a small version in your space (in my case 32% scale). If you look at the file name and pinch select. You can then select 100% Scale!!!! Boom. It works! Now the Vision Pro constantly fades out when you are walking and sketchup exporting can cause some weird geometry anomalies. But boy howdy. Can't wait until this is native but for now. Game changer.

    you mentioned rendering took too long, I assumed you uses CPU rendering, which is sloooooooooooow.... For instant rendering, real time renderer are much recommended. Enscape is one extremely easy to use and incredibly fast with just typical graphic card (not gated to nVidia GPU only), it basically turns your sketchup model into a game with walking mode + VR support. But specifically Vision Pro? I think it is still too new and too niche for companies to tap into. As for Trimble....? I not going to hold my breathe they going to "improve" the software any time soon.

      For the rendering portion, I meant the time it takes to find materials you like, set lighting, etc. Not CPU specifically. Usually, we just need a rough feel of a space to make a decision, and not something photorealistic. I agree with you regarding Trimble. I keep dabbling in Blender and Shapr3D to see if I can port my workflow. Have you made a switch off of them? Any recommendations?

      @@bellrisefarm Enscape have material tags which vastly speed up generic material setup. Literally just name it with keyword, "wood", "metal", "gold".... The software takes care of the setting. More software should do this, why are we manually import and adjust generic materials over and over and over....? The included asset library also good enough for generic decorations, since it is real time, lighting is just a matter of finding a good time of day and color temperature, very very easy compared to any other renderer plugins I used before (vray/thea). I'm on Sketchup for over 13 years, don't really have the time and will to learn other software so far. Will it benefit me greatly if learn Blender? Absolutely, because I work with game assets. But... no will to do so.

      Alright I'm sold. I'll give Enscape a shot to see what I'm missing out on. Thanks for the tip!

    Edit: Looks like with VisionOS 2 the mouse bug is fixed. Also, the wrap around display comes close to fixing the multi-window mirroring limitation. Saved guest profiles help as well with quick sharing. If anyone knows of an elegant solution for immersive VR in Vision Pro straight from Sketchup or a .gltf file, please let us know!

      Please and thank you!. I managed to export my sketchup model to a USDZ and plop it in my room. BUT it would not scale more than 32% so I couldn't walk through. SO CLOSE! This will be an absolute game changer. I'm chomping at the bit and furiously clicked on your video hoping you'd found a solution! Alas.

    Assembly line. Awesome family project. Kids learn a lot of principles from things like that. Your daughter may be a carpenter someday 😉
