Solo Overnight Backpacking in Emigrant Wilderness (Ultralight Style)

One night in Emigrant Wilderness. Depart from Gianelli Cabin Trailhead, off trail connect to Crabtree Camp. Then make a big counterclockwise loop. Labor Day Weekend 2018. This was my first solo trip, and I also had a goal to not look at my GPS (I did log the trip on GPS though). I carried a satellite communicator for emergencies.
Ultralight Backpacking Trip during Family Vacation (Naples, Italy)
Просмотров 2706 лет назад
Phillip and I took our brother Andrew out on his first backpacking trip. We took a cable car about 3/4 of the way up Monte Saint Michele Molare, the tallest peak in the Lattari Mountains. We were visiting Naples and the Amalfi coast as part of a big family trip. One of the perks of having a light kit is that it's easy to fit it in my suitcase for an otherwise non-backpacking trip. It was great ...

Road Trip to Ochoco National Forest for the Great American Eclipse

Three of us fight fatigue and forest fires to get all the way out to Oregon and view the Eclipse. We hiked to a great viewing spot, but later found there was a road directly to the top. No worries, the excitement from the other viewers was fun! Music: "Gemini" - Brice Plays Drums briceplaysdrums.bandcamp.com/

Nighttime Mockingbird Visit (Mountain View, CA)

I wanted to document this bird that has been visiting the past few days. Also a good chance to use my new microphone and fast lens. A friend tells me this is a Northern Mockingbird. The males are currently (March) establishing their territory in Mountain View, CA. He goes on to say that the first few calls in the video happen to be an impersonation of a Dark Eyed Junco. I think it's just funny that most people seem to be wearing the Skurka-designed Flex Capacitor backpack, except for Skurka himself, who is wearing the Osprey Exos.

      Andrew loaned out those backpacks for free to people who needed them (many needed a bigger backpack than usual for the trip). Meanwhile Skurka was reviewing that osprey pack. You can see the review on his website and a picture of my brother Phil is in the review!

    Thanks for this - I'm thinking of doing this hike next June. How was the confidence level / knowledge of when to start heading North toward Moose lake from Alta Meadows?

    • @TheNormalUniverse
      @TheNormalUniverse 4 года назад

      Hi Brian, the trail cuts out at Alta meadow. I think the hike from Alta meadow to moose lake is a good introduction to off trail travel. The hike from moose lake to pear lake was pretty sketchy and I don’t recommend it for beginners. If this is your first time going off travel I recommend that you read the intro chapter to “Sierra high route” by Roper and watch Skurka’s videos on map and compass. Have fun and be safe!

      synthesizerneil oh ya two reasons. First off all I was glad to get to have Mike and Mags as guides, I figure I can catch Andrew another time if I want to. Second, Andrew’s group this session was CRAZY fast

    • @normaluniverse2804
      @normaluniverse2804 6 лет назад

      @@synthesizerneil Ya they were much faster than me, I'm only like 30% in shape. Also, I find that when you're filming it takes a significant amount of mental and physical energy. For example when everyone is relaxing enjoying breakfast, I'm running around filming. To get a shot of people walking by I have to leapfrog them. One of my goals for the trip was to make a nice video, so being in the intermediate group helped.

    Nice vid and congrats on the summit. To clarify one point for safety, a self-arrest utilizes the feet as well. Kick in your toes/crampon tips after getting onto the ice axe and coming to rest!

    • @normaluniverse2804
      @normaluniverse2804 6 лет назад

      From the instruction I've found on the internet, it's the exact opposite. You're supposed to keep your toes in the air, because if your crampons catch and stop moving your own momentum can injure your ankles or flip onto your back. Once you've come to a complete stop you can kick your toes in for stability.

    • @MTNVIWS
      @MTNVIWS 5 лет назад

      Your crampons in a self arrest situation is the worse thing to do, quick way to break your ankles and or start tumbling. Never use your crampons
