How to Repair KORG & Yamaha Digital Pianos
If your KORG or Yamaha Digital Piano has sunken keys or keys that are hard to press down, this video may help.

I fully restored my KORG C15s Digital Piano and documented most of the steps.
If you are not getting sound, then it is possible that the surface mount electrolytic capacitors on the mother board have all failed and need replacing. My surface mount caps had all leaked their electrolytic liquid on to the circuit board which caused corrosion and ate many of the circuit traces.

Donner DDP-200 Digital Piano Key Bounce Fix

This video shows a simple and inexpensive way to improve the action of the Donner DDP-200 Digital Piano. There is excessive bouncing on the black keys, especially the lower octave black keys. By placing a small piece of weather stripping near the key's hammer, it will ...

Interesting video but wondering if by dismantling the piano you invalidated the guarantee.
If you just purchased a $800 digital piano from Donner and it arrived with bad keys like in this video, your first action should be to contact Donner and ask what your options are. I would NOT take the piano apart until you do that first.
Thanks for clear explanations about how you found a solution to fix the bouncing problem of the black keys. Hope Donner had a view on your video so they would get inspired to improve their product. Nice playing of Phillip Glass's piece by the way. Have a great day! :)
Thank you Vincent. Did you experience the same bounce problem on the black keys? It definitely made an improvement on my keyboard, especially when I hit a black key in the center or towards the back of the key. I never hear anything from Donner. Hopefully their engineers see my videos.
Hello George! I'm strongly planning to buy myself one ddp soon, so your videos are great help to know what to do if I notice the same problem, your repairing is smart and affordable and it seems to be really efficient. I also hope that Donner's engineering dept they will watch your videos and take davantage of your job, so they can fix for good problem of bouncing around keys, and also improve the shipping packaging. Very good job! Thanks again for sharing.@@georgeterbush2976
please don't put stuff on you tube if you haven't read the instructions and are clueless about what your talking about
I don't know what is worth less. My video or your comment.
Five years, 500 views and no comments. Yikes! LOL
I got one of those at a Repair Cafe. I used 100C hot air to work out which cap was bad (heat it and it booted) and got the right one second attempt. But the repair took me 1.5 hours, which is too long for one item at these events.
Nice job! You never know what is going to walk in the door at those Repair Cafe events. Good thing you brought a selections of caps with you.
Hi George - was just watching your Donner videos to see if there is any way to access to On/Off button when removing the top. My daughter pressed that button down today and it got stuck down (but not on). Was hoping to get in there to fix it if possible. Wondering if you had any insight. Thanks.
Hi Mr Lowery. Sorry I can not be much help on the power switch. My piano is back together and I'm not sure how the power switch assembly would be removed. So you are saying the button no longer clicks when you press it down? I wonder if you tap hard on it multiple times to see if it releases? Maybe a crumb of a cookie or something like that fell into the circle opening.
Great video. I think it is going to help me a lot restoring my Cat. One question. When you measured the caps, was the capacitance reading not outside the tolerance? Or did you just look at the resistance which was fine? Thanks!
I looked at both the capacitance reading and the internal resistance. I don't believe any of the caps were bad and needed replacing on mine. What kind of problems does your CAT have?
@@georgeterbush2976 It's probably my lack of knowledge about measuring these. I noticed you measured more capacitance then was mentioned on the cap. I thought caps only degraded but yours gone up in capacitance? I was wondering if that was a sign too for degrading...
@@OKB53 I was measuring in circuit so it's possible there is a little added capacitance from the circuit. Also, the caps are probably +- 20% tolerance. I would not worry about your caps if they read like mine. Internal resistance, on the other hand is VERY important. If they read 1 or 2 ohms, they would be bad (for 470uf caps).
@@georgeterbush2976 Thanks, good to know! I just purchased mine and was in a pretty bad shape visually. I cleaned everything and now it looks very good. I didnt turn it on however. Thats my next step. I want to check the pu first.
@@OKB53 Wow! That's awesome. Good luck with the restoration. It's a piece of history.
Impressive! Your video is very thorough and your attention to detail is helpful! What would you charge to fix my Bose CD player? It takes about 17 minutes to start playing my CD, then it works fine.
Hi Deb. I think BOSE use to charge $100 for them to do the repair. They would swap out the bad circuit board with a new one. I'm not sure if they still offer this service since the player is so old. It sounds like you definitely have some bad capacitors that need replacing.
@@georgeterbush2976 thank you for your response. I'll check with Bose.
You sound great George! Amazing you can get a musical instrument for $12. 🎶 👍
I wonder how common this problem is? You sounded great at the end George. 🎹 👍
I think it is a common problem for at least the DDP-200. I would like to know if Donner uses the same design in their other keyboards. Thanks for you compliment. I'm just a piano hack but still enjoy playing. That's all that matters. :)
No explanation ?
This video was to simply show what the charger's display panel shows in pulse repair mode.
Frigging SWEET!
Thank you for the informative video. Was hoping for it to be a easy fix but like mentioned definitely not a project for beginners😅. Still great you were able to fix 👍
Try with cca starting amp. 👍
Just being plugged in over the years wears these out? …what about if a unit was unused and in storage? Nice video!
If the unit is plugged in and basically being used as an expensive clock for years, all of the electronics are still receiving power, even if you are not playing CDs. If the unit was new in a box for 20 years, the electrolytic caps may still be like new.
@@georgeterbush2976 thank you!
Hi, I’m thinking of buying one of these, but have heard mixed reviews. Is yours still working now? How has it held up over time?
It's still working but I prefer playing my Yamaha P71.
I'm confused - do you lubricate the outside of the bushing or the inside of the metal part that touches the bushing?
Hi Philip. I used the lubricant on both the bushing and on the inside of the metal key. Here is where I mention it in the video 11:55. Good luck with your restoration.
@@georgeterbush2976 Thank you!
Thank you for the video help, you are correct! Success! However ONLY the 22uF at the lower right of photo at 17:05. The lower rightmost, in the metal shield can. I tried three over to very left near the orange mylar ribbon cable with no luck. I found refrigerating the board killed CD player then gently touching cap tops with solder iron revealed THAT cap did it. Unit plays entire CD repeat mode all night so I consider it done. Thanks again, hope this helps others not to replace all caps at this time. Yes, they all go bad eventually but hey, in meantime it'll work fine.
Nice troubleshooting with the cold, then the soldering iron! Nice way to pinpoint which cap is causing the problem. Many people here have found that the 22uf cap above the one you replaced was culprit. last night I held a hair dryer aon the front of the unit for 2 minutes and the radio started to work. saw this on another youtube channel. I suspect it heated the capacitors to get them to work. forget Bose customer no service
Yep. that is correct.
This worked for me today. I still love my Bose sound. Who'd a thunk a hair dryer? SMH, so thankful it is once again operational. ☺️
@@aminaroseayeam2125 Of course it is only temporary. The cap (s) are still bad and will malfunction once they get cold.
Bad 22uF cap under the shield can, look at my post above your here.
Thanks for the hair dryer tip, it worked! I feel confident that taking the time to replace one or more capacitors will solve the issue.
You shouldn’t have to do that. Should be better quality
Yep. Totally agree.
WOW how informative!
Thanks. I try to pack as much info into the videos as humanly😅 possible! LOL
Thanks so much for this video! Great to see how to restore vintage synths with such details and explanations! Did you, by any chance, take some pictures of the pcbs?
Thank you! I hope my journy fixing my CAT synth could help others. At least show them what is inside. I have a few pictures that I took when it was apart. What were you looking for?
@@georgeterbush2976 hi! Well im trying to replicate the synth - or at least parts of it! So any detail would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance!
@@wawajanvier By "replicate" you mean reproducing the circuit boards, I do not have good enough pictures to do that.
I don't think dielectric grease is the best tool for this job. It's pretty heavy, viscous grease. Even if it doesn't hang, it would likely slow the action. I've experimented with several lube types including the mentioned spray. I finally settled on Dow Corning Molykote 44 after a recommendation. It gets highest marks from me. My main keyboard was lubed with this 2 years ago and it hasn't changed in the slightest. The action is very light and responsive. One tube should last a lifetime unless you do it for a living.
I agree. The dielectric grease is still performing well on the synth, but if I were to do it again, I would use the Dow Corning Molykote 44. I restored my Korg digital piano and used the Molykote 44. ruclips.net/video/G96oP-ACREQ/видео.htmlsi=0t01yR7imm7T4ap5&t=408

Hi George, I really love what you’ve done with your bike. Very tasteful. I’ve recently purchased my own low-milage 1996 Vulcan. And am currently in the process of personalising my bike somewhat similar to yours. I do have a few questions. What product was used to conceal the flashing on the underside of the tank? The profile of the rubber trim would be just as helpful. Also, how was the Harley cowbell attached to conceal the fuel filter? I’d definitely like to incorporate these ideas on my bike - it sure elevates the overall curbside appeal. Anyway, great looking cycle you’ve got brother!
Thanks for the comments. Really appreciate it. For the gas tank seam, I just used black electrical friction tape which is made of cloth and does not have a shine like the plastic electrical tape. I hated seeing the white seam on the gas tank. LOL. For the cowbell housing, I fabricated a custom metal bracket that fit between the V Twin engine. Unfortunately I sold the bike a few years ago so I can not take close up pictures. Good luck with your new vintage bike. I really miss mine.
Thanks! That's awesome. I love when people post repairs info like this.. please if you do more keep posting! The cable on my C-900 to the 3 pedals is missing from a move, do you know where I could find (1) the wiring diagram. (2) The connector to the pedal that plugs into the back?
Thanks for your comments. I really do appreciate it. I did a search for Korg c-900 service manual or schematics but nothing came up. When i bought my used C-15, it did not come with pedals. since I only use the sustain pedal, I made an adapter that converts the Korg connector into a 1/4" jack so I could use a standard pedal purchased off of Amazon. One possibility would be to contact Syntaur in Texas. They have all kinds of parts for keyboards. syntaur.com/Part-11514-Pedal-cable-Korg
great video, very thorough, very useful. thanks for taking the time to share.
Really appreciate the comment. The bushing and grease are still holding up. I was just playing it.
@@georgeterbush2976 Nice. I just ripped mine apart. Removed the old bushings, am cleaning key tops overnight, have to see about leveling the keys in the morning and then add the new bushings and put it all back together. What could possibly go wrong?
Hello Goerge, thank you very much for this video! I'm in the process of restoring a Yamaha CLP-550. It's not the first piano I restore, and in this case I was puzzled by the keys still getting stuck after lubricating etc...your explanation on the springs is shedding light on this! In general, any siliconic grease would be suitable for this job, but as said sometimes it's difficult to find one with the right viscosity. Thanks again! 👍
Thank you for your kind words and giving the video a thumbs up. It can be really discouraging to put so much time into making a video like this and not have any feedback. Yep, if some of your keys are sitting a little lower than others, the metal spring for those keys have chewed a notch into the plastic which gives the springs less tension. Good luck with this restoration. It's tedious but the results are good.
Awesome bike! I have a 1999! Question? How did you put a Harley Davison horn on it?
It was just the horn cover. I designed a custom bracket to attach to the engine. Behind the horn cover I hid a gas filter.
actually no, but I would also like to use it live and in some schools (like the old wurli) and to do so I need to know if spare parts are easily found or if they used standard keyboards (like fatar, so to speak) sorry for my English 🤷

sorry, where can you find replacement keys for the ddp80. the donner factory says they don't sell them

I spent a long time searching for suitable grease to lubricate synthesizer keys. I ended up using Molykote G-4500 FM Grease, which seems to have the right consistency and is safe for plastics.
I also spent a lot of time looking for the right grease. Molykote makes the grease for Yamaha which is Molykote G-100GY, but it seemed really expensive. I went with Molykote 44 medium. Others have used it with success and so far, I like it.
