Edinburgh School of Icon Painting
Великобритания
Добавлен 1 май 2020
Edinburgh School of Icon Painting was founded in September 2013. It is a small school based in the artist hub St. Margaret's House. The school mission is to teach icon painting (writing) to people of all different backgrounds but at the same time maintaining the ethos and essence of it's spirituality. Introducing this unique form of art to students of the school I introduce a way of practising art which is different the other forms of art and it is said to be more then just art.
Students learn egg tempera technique which has been used in art for centuries and it is one of the most lasting painting technique. There are still reasonably well preserved icons from VI Century.
Egg tempera involved preparing own paints using egg yolk and dry pigments. Through the whole process of work we try to limit synthetic materials. Using organic materials helps to develop a connection with nature.
Here I'm sharing insides into the process.

Iconography is my favorite ❤
The introduction was TOO LONG! Shorten it and quickly get to the point.
Is it just me or the painting is fill with sadness?
@@pohkimcheng59 it’s hard for me to remember what I was feeling while painting this. It is very possible that sadness was one of the feelings. But also the saying “the truth is in the eyes of the beholder” really resonates with me.
😮that is so awsum. ST. BARBARA THE GREAT MARTYR PRAY FOR US AND KEEP US FROM STRONG IN THE STORMS OF LIFE. PRAY FOR US O GREAT SAINT. I LOVE YOU ST. BARBARA ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Interesting. It would have been good to see examples of each 'difference ' during the talk. But, thank you!
Thank you for this.
You are writing such a beautiful icon, It has such beautiful colour 😊
Nie znam tej techniki, ale może kiedyś się nauczę.
Does it matter, if you own as Russian Orthodox as well Greek icons and opposite?
0:20- left is Jesus, right is St John the baptizer. You should ve chose one of them for both icons.
Beautiful, where was this painted?
In Edinburgh, Scotland.
@@edinburghschooloficonpainting Oh, of course. I feel embarrassed for even asking on this channel, but I thought I saw a similar painting at a Church in Palestine.
It was inspiring to hear your thoughts. Art allows me a way of self expression. The creative process enables all to have their ‘own voice’. Thank you for providing the opportunity to learn iconography.
Thank you, Jane. I feel so privileged to be able to share this beautiful way of expressing the world and oneself to people.
So beautiful…..
Thank you for a lovely exposition of icons with animals.
Thank you for taking time to look at it. It is so important to me to keep showing these images.
Stunning! I think a trip north may be in order! Xxx
Thank you ❤️ You are most welcome.
Absolutely beautiful. A beautiful space and inspired images. Thank you so much for sharing ❤
Thank you so much Joe.
Great song!
Damn bro that's fine remember me when this goes viral
Sketching is looking more deeply.
I love this definition of sketching.Thank you Jane
Interesting! This style remindes me of Ukranian folk artist Mykhailo Bilas. Very similar faces and bright colours like his amazing Western ukranian art.
Gorgeous❤❤
Thank you 🙏
This is amazing feed back and beautiful work ❤
What is that
Beautiful 😊
Thank you 💕
Wow❤❤❤
The shading is so striking ❤
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Wow! So specially wrapped.
Yeah 😊 I got it as a present from someone.
I really like the Coptic style. It seems more stylised and stronger outlines, more contrast, if I understand correctly. Less elongated faces than Russian style and short proportions. Thank you for these short discussions and topics. Very interesting
Thank you for watching Emma. I like it a lot as well. I used only liked very “classic” icons. The closest to real human proportions etc. Now I love also those who are much different. It would be interesting to explore origins of Coptic icon more. I’m planing to do an online course painting a Coptic icon soon. Looks like there are people interest in it.
@@edinburghschooloficonpainting Thank you Basia. I shall watch out for that. I love all icon styles. Coptic style seems a little more accessible to me as a beginner , as its more stylised and graphic, especially not really being a painter or fine artist. I don't know if that's true or not. I really want to learn to be able to find my own contemporary style untimately via learning the traditional and one day be able to translate onto the page the beauty that I see in my head. Whilst not disrespecting the traditions. Most important for me though is that it's a contemplative practice
Very good advice, thank you! It is a good reminder to go back to the origional intention behind your desire to create an icon.
And it's so easy to forget it.
My favourite icon! I have not seen the original, I have a little copy. I find this beautiful in the use of colour. It really speaks to me. I looked at it for a long time before I realised the bodies were so small, I was captivated by the eyes and the arm on the shoulder.
I have not written icons, but I have loved watching the process in your videos. I have always understood icon writing as a form of prayer and it is so lovely to hear your experience. I do find praying with icons very meditative and rewarding. One day I may be able to take a course with you…..I could not make the dates for the next week long course. Looking forward to seeing what you do next.
I’m glad that this was helpful to you. I find that it is so good for me to have this practice in my life. I often find comfort and quietness in it. Especially now when the world is a little bit crazy. I hope to see you in one of my courses when you can make it. Thanks for following me here.
I agree..it is a deeply meditative practice. Even watching you paint during our workshop, I felt an emotional connection to the subject..the divine Mother. It is early days for me but I look forward to experiencing more of this as I learn the craft and can immerse myself in it more as I lear how to use the materials. ( the framework).
The slowness of it helps with this os much for me. It’s such a special practice.
Awesome work of art you have going there! How long did it take you to make?
Thanks! It didn’t take too long but it’s still not finished.
Thank you. Very interesting to find out more about icon styles.
I’m glad that you found it interesting Jane ❤
Thank you very much for sharing. I don’t think I have ever seen the second two icons.
I’m glad that you learnt something new. There will be another one soon. More specifically about Coptic Style.
Christ and St Menas is my favourite icon. This brought me in to looking at icons in general. I don’t know why, but it may be the eyes. I love the image of Christ walking with the faithful, walking with me. I also love what appears to be the simplicity of it.
Thank you for this. I love these icons as well. For me it took longer to appreciate and love them. I come from Russian iconography education. At the beginning my favourite icons where those painted in the most classic style. I would even say closest to academic style in a way. Now I love icons that are different. Not necessarily painting according to perfect rules.
🤗👍🤗👍
Very inspiring. Thank you!
Thank you. Good to hear this. 😊
I love how inspiring and educational this is 💗
❤️
Wow! I admire your work Basia! Looking at your students and their artwork I'm tempted to join the class! Also, the video looks very professional! Well done guys 👌👍📹
Thank you for this 😍 You are more than welcome to join on of the classes. No previous experience needed 😊
So looking at my icons, I seem to like the Greek style, although this may also because I have had more access to them.
Are you thinking about exploring other styles?
Thank you Basia, I am discovering icons and this was really interesting. I love that there are beautiful icons with vibrant colours but then what I would think of as more contemplative, still ones with more muted colours.
Such vibrant colours ❤
Thank you 😊
I adore the blue ❤
How wonderful to see all of the icons from you lovely talented people. I so wish I could spend some time in Edinburgh learning how to write such special images. Thank you so much for sharing and I am sure your exhibition has been a success. How long is the exhibition on for please?
Sorry, I just saw the notice at the beginning 😂
Thank you Joe. It was an amazing experience. To see the work of the students on the wall. I was so proud. Lovely to share this with others as well.
Beautiful
Thank you 😊
