Third Planet Rocks
Добавлен 31 июл 2015
I turned my grandpa's old truck into a makeshift camper to explore North America and find rocks. It takes me on some incredible adventures.
A Perfect Beach... But You Can Only Take 1 Rock
After what felt like years worth of talking about it in my videos, I finally went in on a Hi Tech Diamond 10 inch slab saw. To add a little twist, I decided to take only 1 rock home with me for this rockhounding walk along the beaches of the Eastern Upper Peninsula.
Come along with me as I sort through unakite, Lake Superior Agates, jasper, and mysterious rocks I can't even guess how to identify in some of the clearest water I've ever seen.

I decided to make something completely different than I ever have before. Here are all the highlights from 4 different rockhounding locations in the Keweenaw Peninsula of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. This is the first of many videos on a 3,500 mile road trip doing almost the full Lake Superior Circle Tour. The rock beaches of Lake Superior were especially kind to me, giving me sunshine and 80 de...

I was sure to hype Sara up on the sunsets, desert roses, and friendly cows… while failing to mention the rampant ...

It has iron (hematite) trapped within the crystals, giving the typically purple amethyst points a red speckled appearance. Rare Thomsonite and Waterfall Hike | Rockhounding Michigan Upper Peninsula

I head to Michigan’s remote Western Upper Peninsula to explore the shores of Lake Superior for agates. To my surprise, I find something more rare, which was a beautiful piece of thomsonite. Thomsonite is a rare zeolite found only in very small regions of Minnesota and Michigan. It is one of the most beautiful hikes I’ve done in the Upper Peninsula. And for once, the bugs left me alone. Lake Superior’s Worst Agate Spot?

I've been looking for Lake Superior Agates for quite some time now, but never on the shores of my home state of Wisconsin. @@corinneargue3387 nice! Trading is my favorite way to build my collection 👍👍
Lets go!
I found some really nice pieces in 2000 when I lived in El Paso. Geology profession ( my neighbor) took me with him. Really an interesting place.
You have at those rocks!
🤘
Get your hands off if those rocks! Somebody is going to go off

Are those rocks protected by rattlers?
@@BrianDoherty-e8s I’d bet heavily on it! I didn’t see any while I was out in the Winter months, though
Getting the rockhound bug. Thanks for your video, I'm in Vegas.
@@CraigAnderson-h2h you’re in a great spot for it! Get out there 👊
Great Finds! Thanks for sharing!
The Eastern UP was unbeatable when it comes to variety!
nice
Thank you! 👊
i used to go to bishops cap for purple fluorite
Added to my list! Any pro tips?
My brother, your videos are among my favorites. They resonate. I really like the detail you put into your website too. Just want to add that I think it's advised not to wear gloves when operating the saw cause they could get caught in it.
You just made my day. Thank you very much! I am trying to level up my game when it comes to editing. And regarding gloves, these are nitrile gloves that should cut easily if they contacted the saw. That said, I should invest in thinner ones to be sure they will tear away as expected!
@@ThirdPlanetRocksyup exactly how someone we know lost a finger lol 😮
Great job! 👏
Why thank you!
I think you did a great job considering it was your second cut ever.

@@UnknownUser-fe5zu it’s interesting isn’t it? If I’m out here recording and talking about the spot, I don’t want to give people misinformation
Looking at the pile of agates it looked like mostly low grade agate that he didn't want so he was just throwing it back into the lake, I saw a few with good banding I'd have picked out.
Fantastic job sir - really enjoyed this video. Thank you.
Editing it took me quite a while - glad you liked it!
leaky radiator tour ! sounds like the real deal , im in ! lets go !
But will it make it around the lake? 🤞🤷♂️
# 17 looked very much like pudding stone
No kidding… close!

when u showed the beach closed sign, well that sucks hahahahahaha glad u put that in
I only am able to get usable footage out of about 1/3 of the places I stop at. I’ve got whole lists of places that look good on a satellite map but end up being inaccessible 😅
A lot of beautiful rocks
Thank you - the Keweenaw Peninsula is a slice of heaven 🙏
Is 17 actually concrete or is it pudding stone?
That’s good ol fashioned, actual concrete 🤠😅 - I’m not in the right part of Michigan to find puddingstone.
@@ThirdPlanetRocks there are huge chunks of it in our local creek 😄 there was a landslide in 2007 that destroyed a house
😮
13 is my favorite
I liked 8 and 25 a lot
5 👍
I've lived in El Paso for over fifteen years, and I didn't know about this place. We used to go rock hunting at Oro Grande though. Its off of US54 between El Paso and Alamogordo. It's a great spot if you haven't checked it out.
That’s awesome - thanks for the spot. I’ll do some research and will try and swing by next time I’m in NM!

Thank you..... Sooo Beautiful!!! Fun to walk around, find and seek with you 🌹
I’m glad it turned into a nice video, it’s a very cool location. I’m amazed more of it isn’t claimed! Thx for watching 🙂
@@ThirdPlanetRocks YW... I appreciate your reply - Yes, this was a fun and strikingly great video 🎯
Do you have instagram i want to show you mu thomsonite piece?
Do you cut these pices and rock tumble them into jewelry stones or do they fall apart? Im thinking of visiting the area soon.
@@itukuppoo4280 I am going to try to cut one of these, although my hopes are not high. The material is very brittle and tends to crumble. I don’t think it would last long in a tumbler
I am also under the impression that rock collecting isnt allowed bc blm had designated the area as a monument. Im thinking people tresspass into that ranch that i guess owns land to the south part of the hole? I think i followed some info from another video titled : " the volcano in new mexico with green gemstones; the potrillo volcanic field"
@@itukuppoo4280 There is highly variable info online about collecting here and whether or not it’s part of a National Monument. I was given permission to collect here after calling the Bureau myself prior to recording. If you come here to collect, be sure to… 1) verify that the rules have not changed (this is older footage) 2) Stay off the private land. You’re correct, there is private land within the crater.
Awesome video! Do you encounter a lot of dangers when searching for these incredible rocks? - for example rattlesnakes or scorpions? How do you protect yourself from these kinds of things? Thx.
@@jlu926 Truthfully, no. I only have been in the desert in winter months. Snakes and scorpions are still there, but are much less active. I move slowly and carefully before picking anything up. The biggest danger is honestly the challenging hiking conditions. Easy to fall or twist an ankle
You are making two possible fatal mistakes. First wear high top boots and second carry a stick at least 3 or four feet long. Rattlesnakes are everywhere all year long. Use the stick to touch the area you are reaching before you stick your hand on any item. In mid winter when sun is out and heats up the rocks they will sometimes come out to absorb the heat in small crevices.
I thought they were tucked away for winter. Good tips for next time I’m out, thx!
It was great meeting you last week at Vermillion! We took up your suggestion on going to the amethyst mine around Thunder bay and found some really good pieces. Thanks again and good luck hunting!
@@ckt3061 No way - that’s awesome! I’m glad you guys were able to make the drive and find some great pieces. Thanks for keeping in touch!
Why are the new generations sooo obsessed with selfies... We don't care what you look like man, we came to see the rocks and minerals... Not watchable 😢, when every ten seconds you spin the camera around so you can talk to it, so creepy 🤣.

@@dreamlookautodetailingauto3353 safe to say it’s not quite a priority 😂
This is actually on my way to Boise from glass butte! What the best dirt road to take in? I don’t wana get lost or accidentally go on somebody’s property
That’s exactly the route I took. I spent the night out in Leslie Gulch in the winter too, which was wild. Only car out there in 8in of fresh snow.
You mean like a tweeker? lol jk
If the rocks were blue… 😂
Those are amazing. I didn’t even know what it was. What do you do with them when you take them home do you just clean them up and display them or I’m just so curious.
Thank you for this amazing video and I’m just curious. Did you encounter any like rattlesnakes or is it too cold up there? I don’t know. I’m just so curious about all this.
@@Pampnaylor I only brought home a small handful of the pieces shown. I’ve given 2 away to friends that can’t easily get to New Mexico. I plan to keep the remainder as display pieces, and will try cutting a couple of the others. And yes, rattlesnakes are a huge danger here. They’re pretty dormant in the winter months, though
I am new at rock hunting in fact I’ve only been once or twice here in Florida, but I’m learning so much from all these RUclips videos with these amazing people that we know so much about rocks. thank you all for your videos.
