Hi! I am Carlo (or Tagliamare if you prefer) and I am a shipmodeler. I live in Italy and I build ship models in my little workshop which is always "under construction".
The channel goal is to help beginner ship modellers getting into the world of ship modelling. In this channel I show you how I build my ship models from the keel to the sails, the tools I use the most and some tips and tricks you might need.
You can also check out my website: www.tagliamare.com/

Building BRASS ANCHORS from scratch - Ship Modeling
In this episode I show you how you can make your own brass anchors like the ones you see in arsenal models. The hardest part is to shape the shank, the arms and the flukes and then put everything together. At the end of the day you just need some techniques and a bit of patience.
The brass sheet you see in the video was bought from China, here's the link:

Hi, how are you doing with the ship building?😊
Nice 👍🏻🙂
Thank you! Cheers!
Keep it Looks very nice 👍🏻🙂
Looks great
👏👏👏
nice job mu friend, salute from puerto rico
Thanks man!
Lovely work. A suggestion from the model railway world re the flukes. In future, you could solder 4 pieces of brass together and cut/file them out in one action. Then de-solder.
excellent tutorial, I happen to be working on the anchors for my Sherbourne model, and I also broke the anchor at the top where the hole is supposed to be drilled for the ring. Great solution for me.
Just in time :)
Perfect work ! Glad to see that vid. Nevertheless, u should add some mussels on them for more realism ! ( i am joking, very well done )
Thanks man! Next time!!
Very nice tutorial ! Can you share the anchor plan?
You can find the drawings by buying the monography or they also posted the anchors as image in the ancre website: ancre.fr/it/monografia/30-monographie-de-la-belle-barque-1680.html#/langue-20_plans_de_la_belle_au_1_24
Was considering getting into ship building, do you have to do all this, even for beginner kits?
Interesting question. Short answer for most kits yes. Then you have easier or harder kits. Easier kits usually have super easy planking or the hull is already built
Un forrado del casco perfectamente hecho, donde todas las tracas que pasan por la cuaderna maestra llegan a la proa, terminando en la roda, como ha de ser.
Now imagine making 100 of this. Model builders surely have a lot of patient
Unfortunately it was closed, when I visited Napoli some years ago. Have to come back some day …

I love that one too!
Thank you for sharing. It looks amazing
Amazing work! Thank you for making these videos!
Thank you!!
I'm reading the book 'Moby Dick'. This is very handy to help envision the action of the men and the ropes as they drop and pursue the whales they are hunting.
Qual a melhor madeira para esse processo?
Almost all wood can be bent. The best ones are certanly the soft ones like lime wood

Excellent and very informative series + everything else that you do. I’m new to all of this wooden ship building. Can you give me the make and specifications of the dividers you use in this video or, a better choice if appropriate.👍
Hi thank you =) what dividers are you referring to? Not sure I understand
@@Tagliamareyou are using them in this video at 18.37 minutes in. Thank you.
oh perhaps you’re referring to the false bulwarks. those are included in the kit
Always love to see your work, and your teaching skills are amazing. I hope someday you get many followers more.
Thank you =)
Привет Я хочу купить коробку парусник????
You can check the site below, you can find all the information you need www.amatimodel.com/en/
Nice. Just bought this kit. Did you trim off the back of the false deck by a millimeter in order to get the transom to sit flush against the stern frames? Because I did. Hope it wasn’t a mistake, my doing that.
Don’t think it’s a problem, you’ll install the real deck on top of it
hi... my dorade build is going well and I am up to installing the blocks. I was looking for the blocks and found I have to make them myself from the template which I think is quite poor considering the expense of the model. What did you do?....or did you buy your own blocks?,,,thx
Those are non standard blocks that’s why you have the parts to make them included in the kit. I decided to make them from scratch, there is a video about that :)
hi...am currently assembling the main mast and seems quite high. instructions say 96.8cm.....can you do me a favor and measure height of your mast from deck to top just to confirm I have it right....thx....tony
Hi Tony I don’t have the model with me anymore. Stick to the plan! A big part of the mast should fit under the deck. The main mast should be around 80cm from the deck
@@Tagliamare thanks....i just noticed now that you didnt wrap the lower main mast with that photo etch plate.....any reason why or just your choice not to include?....thx....tony
Hi Tony, yes the reason is simply that in that period it wasn’t wrapped in that brass sheet! To know more consider watching the whole playlist THE DORADE - Scale 1:20 Amati ruclips.net/p/PLjLFeG6md-d164FrNlU-ewjz-4whEmpSb
I usually apply Danish oil to the hull, however the shellac does look good so I will try shellac on my next vessel.
I like oils. Try shellac and then use a four-0 steel wool. You’ll get a surface as smooth as butter
@@Tagliamare I presume four o steel wool is fine steel wool ?
I have found ultra fine steel wire wool on Amazon.
It should specify “0000”
@@Tagliamare understood.
Very nice hobby work ,congratulation
Fantastic work !
Great job! I love the deck furniture part of the build. It is like several smaller kits to build.
What an excellent video build log of Fife. Very thorough and comprehensive. 👍
Thank you :D
I do love watching you work and the background local radio adds just the right amount of ambience.
Excellent work as per usual. Can’t say the background noise chatter adds anything.
I’ve been waiting for the next video in this series! The quality is great and I’m so glad you are covering this model.
Thank you!
Jolie boite .
Good vidéo and interressant work !! Congrest ...
Is the balsa wood good for th naval modeling?
No it’s not
If you’ve never tried soldering with a small butane torch, I’d suggest you give it a try! Once you adjust to it, you’ll love its fast action and the incredibly clean joints it produces! There are many great videos on soldering by people who make jewelry, and they’re worth a watch!
good job😍🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩👋
Hello i have a qestion what is better to use for planking nail or wood glue and what type of resin do u use to waterproof the hull, also it would be cool to see you make a battleship out of wood.
Hi! You can find the answer to this questions in this playlist :) ruclips.net/p/PLjLFeG6md-d2hkyi3uIqJtstDc37w4ecz
many interesting ship have but all has owerprice too lot, if price drop about 50% then peoples buy lot more ship models.

hi again.....just wondering if you painted the hull?........i havent painted as yet as I think the finish it has is quite nice and thought may leave it as is,,,,,what are your thoughts?......thx

@@Tagliamare just wondering what white paint did you use?…..I am using Tamiya ts 26 pure white……I have used a whole can with about 5 light coats but still not happy with the white I am getting?…….maybe I need to use another can?…..thx….tony
@@tonytodesco3018 that's a good paint. I used a tamiya super fine grey primer and then 3 coats of a white paint i bought from amazon (a cheaper one than tamiya)
@@Tagliamare well I'm on my 3rd can and probably about 11 coats....starting to look a lot better. Did you give it a final coat of clear?....thanks
No in the video I didn't but I highly recommend doing it =)
Looking forward to the continuation of the Sherbourne series as I have just ordered mine online and I am a first time wooden ship modeler coming from plastic kits!
You mention zed rope. Explain that to this non-ship modeler please! I built a manual rope machine like this several years ago to make rope from the twine that farmers use to tie up straw bales. It works swimmingly well, but I’ve never heard the zed reference before! Really enjoying your channel! I’d like to see an episode on the tools and machines you use in building your exquisite models sometime in the future! Home machine shop is my hobby using the Sherline brand lathe and milling machine. Thanks for your excellent videos!
Thank you Tom! The Z refers to the direction the cable is twisted. It can either be S or Z shaped. Most of the ropes of the ship are twisted from right to left (Z), the bigger cables like the the ones that connect the anchors or some stays are S shaped (made from 3 or more standard Z shapes ropes). You can check this by looking at the threads direction of your rope :)
@@Tagliamare Interesting! Before retirement, I dealt with wire rope a lot, anywhere from 5/8” to 2” in diameter in the railroad mechanical department. Much like the ropes you make, wire rope is comprised of wires twisted into strands, and strands twisted into rope, or cable as some refer to it. If the wires in the strands run in the opposite direction from the winding of the strands into the rope, it’s called “Regular Lay”. If the wires in the strands and the winding of the strands into the rope are both in the same direction, it’s called “Lang Lay”. I’m guessing this is similar to the “S” or “Z” that you’re talking about?
@@tomt9543 Not really the same because you can have right regular lays (Z) or left regular lays (S), and right lang lays (Z) or Left lang lays (S). In the modeling community they always refer to them as Z or S. Maybe because it's easier to have a visuale reference.
@@Tagliamare Right. The same with wire rope. Regular or lang can be left or right. You’re getting me very interested in this ship modeling thing!
Carlo - I really like that RC ship model. Have to look at it some more.
First thoughts on the drill press: 1) If your bits have ever become stuck but the drill (hand held or drill press) chuck was still spinning, the bits might have tiny burrs from that, and that can cause wobble if not filed off. 2) the chuck on the drill press might have a lot of “runout”, that results in eccentric motion. I’d consider replacing the chuck with something having less runout.
Thanks!
Tom, I had about the same comments. First, that drill bit itself looks to be running out of true. I also found when I bought my drill press that the chuckand Morse adaptr was junk and replaced with a JET brand. I just sold that drill press after about 20 years ownership (moved to a duplex with no room for a decent shop) but did a check for the new owner - still well within a couple thousandths. Also, the quill may be bent or have a worn bearing or sleeve, i.e worn out.
It's also possible that the bit has become bent in some manner. It may be rolled on a smooth surface like a table or countertop and see if you sense anything is off with how true the bit is.
