Tagliamare
Италия

Hi! I am Carlo (or Tagliamare if you prefer) and I am a shipmodeler. I live in Italy and I build ship models in my little workshop which is always "under construction".
The channel goal is to help beginner ship modellers getting into the world of ship modelling. In this channel I show you how I build my ship models from the keel to the sails, the tools I use the most and some tips and tricks you might need.
You can also check out my website: www.tagliamare.com/

Smaller ships are cooler and here is why
I love bigger ships though, but are we sure those are fun?
Of course, there’s one exception-arsenal models. Unlike a full ship kit, you’re not expected to build the whole thing. No masts, no rigging, maybe even half a hull missing-and suddenly, it’s “historically accurate” instead of “unfinished.” Now that’s a loophole I can get behind!

Building BRASS ANCHORS from scratch - Ship Modeling

In this episode I show you how you can make your own brass anchors like the ones you see in arsenal models. The hardest part is to shape the shank, the arms and the flukes and then put everything together. At the end of the day you just need some techniques and a bit of patience. The brass sheet you see in the video was bought from China, here's the link: it.aliexpress.com/item/1005007408255483...

Yes make step by step of all of the models that you build.
If you rough the brass sheet with very fine sandpaper, wipe it with acetone, and then immediately put on a thin coat of 10# shellac the paper pattern will stick to the shellac and won't fall off when working it.
Just began construction of a whaleboat using this book as a reference.
Excellent presentation, there is a place for all sizes of ships but smaller ships are all of the things that you say. Manufacturers must have a market for big ships and certainly the margins will be bigger.
A big problem with the larger models is display space. Smaller models can be better accommodated when deciding where to display them. Great video, looking forward to seeing more.
There is an excellent tv show called "The North Water" it's about a whaling ship. It's either a Schooner or Barque not 100% sure but I would love to build one, any recommendations?
Didn't know the show, I think Im going to give it a shot. It looks like a Schooner to me. Dorade and Bluenose are two beautiful ones
@Tagliamare thanks much appreciated
I really love 17th century men of war like La Couronne and HMS Sovereign of the Seas. So much so that kit bashing and scratch building loses much of its tedium, and cost is no object if you are willing to work for it, and the patience and dedication demands are very high. What counters those is the passion for such elegant and detailed warships.
I agree 100% with your conclusion and your reasoning. I'd rather build 2 or 3 quality smaller crafts than wasting my time, money, and sanity on a monstrosity that I would have to get rid of my 60" television to display.
I need both of them !
I have followed your very good videos and purchased what I thought was an easy model to start with when I have the time. It is the Panart Armed Pinnace Lancia Armata 1800 1:16. It is open frame and has triple planking. Not easy! So I have now purchased the Corel Sloup Brittany Oyster Boat 1:25. I will start with that. How difficult is the planking? Ok this has got to be easier, Billing Boats HMS Renown steam pinnace. Please could you do model builds of these boats so that I can stop buying and start building. Thank you.
Lovely
Probably the most common sense video you or anybody have put out on building model wooden vessels. I am 80 years old and would be crazy to start building a 74 ship of the line now.
I agree, I love making smaller boats, I don't make ships with canons, and I particularly like the look of the Vanguard models fishing boat series. I also like the ships of exploration. Shackleton's Endurance from Occre was a great model to make, a larger model but so much less repetitive and complex compared to the big old ships of the line, and so much more interesting. The elegant racing boats of the 1930s are also a favourite for me. I loved building the Dorade from Amati, again, a larger model but simple enough to be enjoyable and not repetitive. I think that the small models from MidWest are a great place for anybody to start if they want to get into the hobby.
Those swivel guns are so cool, how did you make them?
Those are 3d printed and are part of the Sherbourne kit :)
@@Tagliamare okey!
What kinds of tools are needed to build model ships? Awesome video by the way, keep it up!
Thanks! Here is a video you might be interested in :) TOP 10 Shipmodeling Tools for Beginners | how to build a ship model ruclips.net/video/YRcHjcwdjew/видео.html
@@Tagliamare Ill check it out! thank you!
I really like Vanguard models (Chriss Watton) approach.
He really makes great kits for beginners and awesome smaller ships
I agree completely. I like smaller ships for all the reasons you listed.
Hi - great video and thanks for sharing! Really insightful, especially for the planking as I find that so hard to get right. Question about the nails. After the plank is glued, do you cut the head of the nail off and sand the remainder of the nail down/push it in or do you take the nail out when the glue is dry?
Hi there! Thank you. So, usually I take them out, simply because most of them are reusable. It can happen sometimes that the nail is too pushed down and you can’t take it off without damaging the plank. In this case I just leave it there, head included
When you leave the nail in, do you sand down the head of the nail to avoid little bumps for the next layer of planks?
Yes, as a result of sanding the entire plank, the nail head is also sanded down. You don't sand just the nail head otherwise you risk to create an uneven surface
I want to kiss you
Vanguard models are very impressive
I am building The Dutchess of Kingsdom from Vanguard Models. Everything is absolutely 1st class
I just had a look at the online manual and the pictures of the finished product are really impressive! In terms of construction design you can easily spot it is a VM model :)
A great tutorial for beginners and not so experience builders
Prese su Amazon amzn.to/4abvUSV
Thanks for your super work and sharing with us
Thank you :)
Thank you for the great video . The planking process is excellent.
Thanks!
Hi Tagliamare, nice videa, thank you. What do you think about Harold Hahn‘s method? Btw the radio in the background is a nice touch. Shall try the shelack next time, looks nice. Take care!
Hi! Thank you for the comment! I’ve never used Hahn’s method, but I think it might over complicate things for such a model. For arsenal model ship it’s a totally different story
@ True. Thank you.
Sorry, one more question: what colour of shellack do you use? Colourless or blonde? Thank you in advance!
@robertsuffak813 yeah no problem, I use the blonde one which gives a yellowish warm shade. But colourless is also good if you want to keep the original color temperature of the wood. Cheers
@ Thank you!
Hi Tagliamare! Thanks for the review. Btw: The Rif Winfield book can be bought at Amazon for USD 900…
Hi, how are you doing with the ship building?😊
Nice 👍🏻🙂
Thank you! Cheers!
Keep it Looks very nice 👍🏻🙂
Looks great
👏👏👏
nice job mu friend, salute from puerto rico
Thanks man!
Lovely work. A suggestion from the model railway world re the flukes. In future, you could solder 4 pieces of brass together and cut/file them out in one action. Then de-solder.
excellent tutorial, I happen to be working on the anchors for my Sherbourne model, and I also broke the anchor at the top where the hole is supposed to be drilled for the ring. Great solution for me.
Just in time :)
Perfect work ! Glad to see that vid. Nevertheless, u should add some mussels on them for more realism ! ( i am joking, very well done )
Thanks man! Next time!!
Very nice tutorial ! Can you share the anchor plan?
You can find the drawings by buying the monography or they also posted the anchors as image in the ancre website: ancre.fr/it/monografia/30-monographie-de-la-belle-barque-1680.html#/langue-20_plans_de_la_belle_au_1_24
Was considering getting into ship building, do you have to do all this, even for beginner kits?
Interesting question. Short answer for most kits yes. Then you have easier or harder kits. Easier kits usually have super easy planking or the hull is already built
Now imagine making 100 of this. Model builders surely have a lot of patient
Unfortunately it was closed, when I visited Napoli some years ago. Have to come back some day …

I'm reading the book 'Moby Dick'. This is very handy to help envision the action of the men and the ropes as they drop and pursue the whales they are hunting.
Qual a melhor madeira para esse processo?
Almost all wood can be bent. The best ones are certanly the soft ones like lime wood
