    Gifts Ungiven, Fact or Fiction Now, how to get this into my game?

  • @Nixxiechan
    @Nixxiechan 3 дня назад

    I really like Sagrada in the way that you roll dice and draft them but each player chooses which dice they want based on their specific player board. No same colours can go next to another of the same either vertically or horizontally and this applies to number values as well. Each player chooses which dice they'd like to put on their player board in turn order and it goes from there. Then of course, there's Catan that I dislike with a passion as it's just rolling (and praying) for resources. A game similar to Catan that I like way more is called Machi Koro where each player can buy from a pool of cards that has a number on it. The number represents the roll and if the dice get rolled for that amount, the player who owns that card gets (or takes) money. It's a much better way of controlling the randomness of the rolls in my opinion.

    • @cogitodesign
      @cogitodesign 3 дня назад

      Thanks for your comment ☺I completely agree about Sagrada- it's much better to have player agency over what dice you choose etc rather than the game deciding for you, leaving you with no interesting decisions to make. I haven't played Machi Koro but I like the sound of how it helps controlthe randomness. I'll have to look out for it! Thanks again!

    "Circle The Wagons" does one of my favorite versions of this with card drafting. The cards are face up in a circle. One player chooses what card to start on and the other gets the first pick. The drafting player may then either choose that first card, OR skip as many cards as they want until they reach a better card further down the circle. HOWEVER your opponent then gets ALL the cards you skipped. It's such a smart and fun risk game where both players are effectively cutting and choosing their way around the entire game. There are superior cards, and players want them, but you not only need to determine how many cards you would be willing to give up to get that card, but also what value your opponent is also putting on that card as EITHER player can technically draft it at any pick.

    What is a "crunchy" game?

      Great question! In board gaming, a game is considered 'crunchy' if it involves a lot of interesting decisions during gameplay. Here's a Cogito Short I made about this terminology which gives you a little more info: ruclips.net/user/shortsI0jiRZ0Np1w?si=z3t8oEbPqWHpMRNL Thanks for your question!

    I'm currently designing a tabletop RPG with detectives and police set in the 1930's where you gather evidence, interrogate NPC's and at the end when you have all the correct info about the suspect you make a final accusation and you gain XP and level up in rank. It's quite complex because I need to design tons of cut-outs for objects, maps for the locations, hand-outs for various objects, mysterious letters , police databases for license plates, fingerprints and criminal records for the players to compare. Again, the game is complex but fun and makes the player want to play again on the next session because it's keeping them on the edge and encourages investigation further. The name of the game is called: Solved Cases, a role-playing investigation game. (Ages 18+)

    Just got on your channel, 5.21K over there. Eager to see how big this helpful channel will grow. Anyway, I haven't see you talk about board game material and how it feel to player yet. I think this is important to learn, like paper, some of them clumsy and will deteriorate, while thing like wood even if it improve the experience, it may make the design more costly and increase the packaging size. Basically, I wanted to know from experienced like you, how you feel about material.

    Great video! I think it’s fascinating that this mechanic was used in Biblical times. Brilliant! Thanks for sharing that! (I know this mechanic as “I Split, You Choose”, but that may be a regional variation.) Another way to make this mechanic work well with more than two players is to pair the players up. Bequest, for example, handles this brilliantly, in that you either negotiate with the player on your left or the player on your right, depending on which round it is. 5:21 Just a comment about player interaction: I often see board gamers talk about “multiplayer solitaire” as if it’s a bad thing and player interaction as a good thing, but I feel like that’s a matter of opinion (and it also depends on the game). Personally, I tend to prefer games with lower player interaction. That’s because I haven’t found as many cooperative games that I really like compared with competitive games, but I still like being able to help someone out without sabotaging my own strategy too much, and lower interaction allows me to do that. Some of my friends have even been able to predict games that I will dislike because there’s too much player interaction, and they’re often correct! 😂

    • @cogitodesign
      @cogitodesign 29 дней назад

      I know what you mean. I think the term multiplayer solitaire was applied to modern euro style games by those who prefer more thematic games but I agree it is certainly just a matter of preference. I personally like games with interesting indirect player interaction mainly. I haven’t played Bequest so I’ll have to check it out but we actually have a similar approach in our second published game Philosophia: Floating World where players would cut and choose cards with their neighbours even in games up to 6 players. Thanks for your comment ☺️

    Roll to move is the best game mechanic as it reflects real life circumstance. It teaches us that we ultimately dont have control of the bigger picture of our existence and it teaches that no matter how bad things get they can turn around in the blink of an eye. And no matter how good things are. You can still fall.

  • @Quincy_Morris
    @Quincy_Morris Месяц назад

    The best roll and Move game is A Touch of Evil. Because 1. There are a lot of resources which can modify the roll 2. You can go many directions with varying rewards at different distances so you have interesting choice with both ‘good’ and ‘bad’ rolls. 3. Rolling a 1 grants you an event card so the worst roll is actually one of the best given how good events are. Another good example is Spy Alley which has a resource that can modify your roll, and part of the board has a major deviation and choosing which path to take is a significant decision/ risk each time.

      @@cogitodesign Yeah, when you trigger the Production action, you get a resource for every tile (or selected tiles) with a meeple on it. Getting more meeples is also a Production action. Then you can use a Move action to ferry them around and set up a new Production action. Also, they're relevant in combat - they deter attacks by lowering the aggressor's Popularity and some faction abilities can give them combat points, iirc.

    I love the idea of them, a game that's played as an extended campaign is amazing. But the practice of permanently destroying/altering/etc game components... nope. Not in this lifetime. While I doubt it's the intent for most designers, with the expense of many modern board games, it /feels/ like planned obsolescence, a marketing gimmick to sell restock components like printer cartridges, or a way to cut secondary market. It also makes introducing the game to somebody new a royal pain. You can't really introduce them to the start of the game if you've already been playing it, at least not without buying another copy. Also, as they're sort of designed around the idea of a specifc group of people playing over and over, introducing somebody entirely new part way into overall run has so much potential to create some issues. There's a group of folks out there for whom none of these are things that would bother them, and more power to 'em, but... Mind you, on a computer, where you can reset to 0 on a new save? Most of problems just vanish. Of course, there's some issues with computer board games, but at least it's an entirely different set of issues.

    There are some really neat variations on this mechanic! You mentioned Village, where your workers get old and die. Another unique mechanic to that game is how most actions in the game are taken not by worker placement, but by worker displacement: taking a token off the board to do the action of that space (and that token becomes a resource you can use!) One of the issues you mentioned was blocking, and I think the game Asking for Trobils fixes that in a neat way. You place one worker per turn, as usual, but instead of there being a defined round, you can spend a turn to gather all your workers so they are usable again. However, if someone wants to take an action where your worker is, they can kick you off, but then you get your worker back so you can delay having to waste a turn getting all your workers back. Architects of The West Kingdom has the mechanic that you can go where you’ve already gone, and the more workers in a spot, the more powerful the action. Dice placement has revolutionised my game experience. Add a rondel and you have The Red Cathedral. Put in a silent auction and you have Crystal Palace. Mix colours and numbers and you have Scholars of the South Tigris. Change the function of worker by the die face, and you have Beyond The Sun. So many of my favourite games of all time have this mechanic now!

    The universe is made up of just protons and Neutrons, and yet it can make every element and molecule. It is inanimate and yet it makes life. I would say Art is when we make something that somehow is more than what it is. Generally with an emotional component. Ironically this could be used to slightly apply a metric by which we can measure how art something is. By that difference of how much it creates in excess of what it is. The Mona Lisa is small and simple and yet renownedly loved. Monopoly is art in its ability to illicit the appropriate emotion when someone mentions capitalism. Clue is art in its ability to tell an ever changing murder mystery story. Chutes and Ladders is less art than it used to be thousands of years ago. When it had more meaning to what it was doing. Art is us taking that step to transcend simple humanity towards something more than life. And board games are very much part of that. They served as a cultural salve for Germany after the world wars. A reminder that we can go exist together and still be competitive and have fun and not attack anyone. Eventually they have a chance to be one of the best forms of art. Although at this rate VR will probably overtake it. (Also clearly by this definition Tiny Epic games are High art (small box big game))

    • @cogitodesign
      @cogitodesign 2 месяца назад

      Thanks Matt, this is an interesting idea! So when something is more than the sum of its parts the extra that is added is the 'art'! Also, who doesn't love tiny epic games, so this checks out for me :)

      @@cogitodesign from what I can see not enough people love Tiny Epic games lol And yeah, although to be more accurate I would say that "the extra" is where art lives, but the art isn't quite guaranteed and all of the extra isn't art? Maybe ? But it certainly helps explain why it is so hard to define

    why Talisman was not mentioned? It is getting its 5th edition and its still just roll and move where the only decision is whenever you move to left or right and then stuff happens and you might roll again. It is a great example how people nitpick at luck of dice, but don't complain about luck of draw of the cards because the limited outcomes unlike a dice where the same roll might show up n times in a row.

    Pop Quiz, is Tiny Epic Quest a Worker Placement game?

      BGG says it isn’t but I haven’t played it myself… Would you say it is?

      @attmay82 3 месяца назад

      @@cogitodesign I would say it isn't, but I think it checks all the criteria of a worker placement. You have three meeples, you move them around the map, where they are determines what actions you will take during the night phase, you can block your opponent

      I agree that does sound like it checks the criteria. I’ll have to look out for it and give it a go myself. Definitions are always tricky things! We discuss this topic more in our ‘are board games art?’ video. Thanks for commenting ☺️

    I haven't played Ur, but I feel like it is a decidedly better game than Backgammon, multiple d4 where 2 sides count as giving moves is massively bell curved. And being able to determine how to apply those is even better. It's specifically the I rolled and that number is the amount the piece moves. Is so much worse. It's weird how the worst of thousands years old games are the ones I've actually heard of and played

      Interesting, perhaps there’s an alternate reality where no one has heard of backgammon and everyone plays Ur 😂

    If you can script a game to only stop and ask for decision then these would run to completion without single prompt

      I think this applies to games like ‘Snakes and Ladders’ completely but equally it applies to casino games like Roulette ☺️ Thanks for your comment!

      @@cogitodesign well, in casino games you either bet between each round or are asked whenever you want to pay out or continue - scammier but more engaging. Snakes and ladders only have illusion of agency.

    6:20 technically its not balanced, first to move still has the advantage :P

    I think you title is misleading. Many games use randomness. The issue with games like Monopoly is the lack of agency; you actually make this point towards the end and it is the really issue here. For example, the royal game of Ur is actually interesting despite the randomness. I also don't think it really matter whether you have pre-luck or post-luck either; it's how it's implemented with the rest of the game. In fact pre-luck might be a bit easier to get right!!!
