While I do agree that Branthwaite should’ve been taken, let’s look at it from Southgate’s perspective. Dunk has 7 years of prem experience, he’s a GOOD player, all his passing metrics are excellent and he’s a huge threat in the box. The way Brighton play is much more akin to the way England play then Everton is, possession based football, playing out from the back etc. I think had Maguire been fit enough, Southgate might’ve taken Branthwaite, but he wants another experienced centre back. Again I want to clarify, Branthwaite has a way higher ceiling and I’d have him in my team, but it’s also not such a travesty as people are making it out to be. I don’t think any of Southgate’s decisions you can look at and say they’re objectively bad. He’s just trying to build a squad with the best balance of young talent and experience. One thing I do think he got wrong was not bringing Tyrick Mitchell but hey ho, we just gotta pray for Shaws fitness I guess

As an Everton fan, been watching Braithwaite all season. Totally agree, IMO he is future England captain - he is that good. Southgate said he 'is not ready' - so maybe he's seen something that we haven't but it can't be about his football ability because no exaggeration - he's a generational talent. How Dunk has got ahead of him, I don't know. Branthwaite has a great left foot and is a better defender in all departments. That said - I think it's the only decision I disagree with that Southgate has made, so overall pretty positive - although I don't think our defence is good enough to win it against likes of France, Germany, Portugal.
