    Did you ever end up adding a intercooler?

    • @jtlachappelle
      @jtlachappelle 25 дней назад

      Nope. 8 years and 120k serious road trip miles later it still rocks just fine just the way it is. Im going to give it a bunch of attention soon, replace a bunch of stuff, so i might add one then. Or not. It works great without one.

      And no EGT gauge either. Thats the thing, with no intercooler you have to be more mindful of EGTs. I do it by feel but for most people if you go without an intercooler id recommend an EGT gauge so you can be sure you’re not cooking your head, etc

      I did away with that setup long ago and have a stainless Vibrant resonator with 2” inlet/outlet, hung from the bumper with rubber H mounts. It ended up being more reliable than the factory setup. I need to make a new vid and delete this one.

    Tremendously useful video, thank you for making this. 1z into an '82 Westy over here. The 1z/AHU is the best engine for Vanagon! All VW parts, no aftermarket or custom stuff needed. ALH is a lot more work to swap in, and the newer 2.0 TDI's are more complicated still.

    Great conversion, i love it. These AHU engines are far better than the modern 2.0 TDI. These original AHU water pumps are a little weak in the bearings but there's a reinforced aftermarket version. I installed one in my caddy a few years ago when the bearing gave up the ghost. I recommend installing it when converting knowing the tension on the serpentine belt is higher than originally intended for the WP.

    I live full time van life got my video games tv and hotspot pc in the working I’m still figuring out the conversion for space and what not but curtains are what I’m working on next wack ass people be calling the cops on me in a parking lot so I got a front window reflector but people be weird cops don’t care your living van life but people need to talk to you first before randomly calling the cops

    • @jtlachappelle
      @jtlachappelle 2 года назад

      Thatd be nice if people would come talk to us before calling the cops, but they wont, because they’re lazy AF, and they’re dicks, and afraid of homeless people, and afraid of what they dont know and understand in general. SO….thats why there’s Stealth Camping, and im afraid, my guy, that youre not doing it. Curtains are the VERY FIRST THING you do to a van if you’re going to live in it. Period. They come even before your bed, because you can always put down a Thermarest and sleep on the floor, but you cannot sleep properly without curtains. Then, even if you have a sweet curtain setup, like mine, you cant be hanging out playing games and shit at night in your sleeping spot when its time to stealth out. I mean, if you have some sort of absolute blackout setup maybe, like black painted cardboard under black tinted windows, fitted so there are zero cracks to peep through, where its absolutely impossible to see inside, maybe you can play with headphones, but then some snoopy bastard might hear the controller clicking or some shit, or hear you moving around in there. The bottom line is Stealth Camping is called that for a reason…because people have zero idea youre doing it. There are a lot of rules and tricks, like doing your eating and yoga and tooth brushing and shit someplace else, BEFORE you get to your spot, so you can roll up quietly draw the curtains and crash out. Now i have to make a full on Stealth Camping vid sharing all of the secrets I’ve learned over 26 years of doing it…long overdue…

      I have no clue about decibels. I just know my van sounds BITCHEN. Just build it and drive it and don’t worry about it.

    • @EndlessShots
      @EndlessShots 2 года назад
