Pre-Stage Check List
Pre-Stage Check List... how to set yourself up for success on a stage. As ROs we see a lot of people show up unprepared to be successful at a stage. This short breaks down Ryan's Pre-Stage process that helps him be prepared for anything a Stage could throw at him.
If you have a different method or something you do that Ryan didn't mention, please share it in the comments!

    If I were using a phone purchased by the government, sure, I'll do anything with it, but I do not think you should need to bring a phone on a RnG. The military uses phones to gather intel, but they also don't have to worry about replacing it. Matches should just ban phones and make intel that can be done with a notebook and pencil.

    • @ActionShootingShow
      @ActionShootingShow 2 месяца назад

      @heyhayhay247 I definitely don't think a smart phone should be necessary to be successful at a match. Intel or not, I always have mine as more of a safety net to call if there is a need or emergency so I don't think they should be banned. I guess you could ban people from using them on the course, I'd certainly follow that rule and be fine with it.

    I'm late to commenting. I have questions on how to handle a specific ND. Stage was starting in the driver seat of a car. Car pointed down range. Rifle in amber status(bolt forward on empty chamber mag in) and stuck in middle console area. On the buzzer shooter had to open the door, grab the rifle left the muzzle up and move it between door and A pillar. Then chamber rifle and engage a 15 yard cardboard, 200 yard and 400 yard steel. All shots had to be taken left handed and the shooter had to stay in the seat of the car. There was more to the stage but this part is all we need. The shooter got his rifle out the door muzzle in a safe direction, he went to shoot. His sling was in his LOS. He moved the sling with his left hand went to put his hand back on the fire control . He insisted, put his thumb in the trigger well, and discharged the rifle. The rifle was in a safe direction and the round struck the C zone of his intended target. He DQed himself. Would you have given him a match dq or just a stage dq?

    • @ActionShootingShow
      @ActionShootingShow 7 месяцев назад

      Good question. To start off, I generally don't like the idea of "stage DQs". I personally think it should either be a penelty to discourage an action, or if it's unsafe it's a match DQ. It's in a safe direction so generally, I'm inclined to not DQ someone, especially if I'm not 100% certain of what happened. I think since it's still in a safe direction I'd probably just let them keep going but afterwards give them a little warning that they got lucky and need to slow down. Kudos to the competitor for the integrity to call themselves out when they are out running their sights.

    • @jamesheldman4659
      @jamesheldman4659 7 месяцев назад

      @ActionShootingShow I'm with you on this. The shooter has been around for a long time. He DQd himself and said it's a lesson learned. He also stuck around and helped RO for the rest of the day. I tried to get him to take just a stage DQ instead of a match Dq. His muzzle orientation was excellent, and that's what made this "unsafe" situation safe. I was just curious what you guys would typically do.

  • @joemotorsports
    @joemotorsports 8 месяцев назад

    Thanks for the AAR. Yes, it’s a balancing act to make the stages difficult, but accessible. I’m toying with an idea to make a Pro class for the folks that want harder. We were originally going to have 8 stages, but we couldn’t get the board to approve the non-traditional range use. Originally stages 1 and 2 were a lot harder, but we would time out or be right at the limit so, Bob made them a little easier. Imho match was time plus points, so having some hard stages that most DNF isn’t a bad thing. I think you need 1 or 2 stages like that. Stage 4 had a sled because we didn’t have a rescue Randy to drag, next year we will. Look for a variation with Randy. For the course, yes it was a lot better this year, my goal is to make it a don’t miss kind of match and not the normal RnG. Look for it to increase in challenge next year. Jeremy Swofford was the food truck guy, excellent food, fyi.

  • @heyhayhay247
    @heyhayhay247 8 месяцев назад

    I ultimately want the event to be safe, but I also can't stand being around people who treat a gun like a grenade with the pin pulled. Respecting the firearm and fearing the firearm are very different things. I was turned off of USPSA events because some old fudd will call 180 on someone when it wasn't even close or I'm not trusted to holster an empty gun myself when getting ready at my car. Conversely, I can come to the starting line of a gun run with a hot pistol safely in the holster. I guess it ultimately comes down to I really don't like being told what to do when I'm already doing the right thing or being treated like a child.

    • @ActionShootingShow
      @ActionShootingShow 8 месяцев назад

      100% as an RO I do everything I can to keep from DQing people. Generally, RnG seems to balance safety well even with all the dynamic movement. I've also been to matches where people seem almost excited to DQ people and that's not the attitude we should have. ROing for the years I have I've sadly had to hand out some DQs but I always feel bad because I couldn't help prevent it. -Ryan

      I think that's a very very common idea in RnG and it does a great job at testing gear. Mike and Ryan's guns would both probably fill the main fighting rifle niche in different ways. That sounds like a very solid build. I'm sure it serves you well.

      @@ActionShootingShow My 16" is basically the exact same setup but I'm running the Credo 2-10x36 w/RMR on top in a Badger C1 mount. You really don't need parallax adj on a fighting gun, you don't have the time. I was interested in the Leupold 5 but noticed the same with the reticles and the parallax wouldn't be used in my case. I have about 3 years behind my 14.5 and it performs very well.

    • @ActionShootingShow
      @ActionShootingShow 11 месяцев назад

      @Blain5700 while I'm still experimenting I think you maybe right about not needing parallax adjustment. While it can be nice to have, it's definitely not a deal breaker. I hope in the future I can pick up a Credo 2-10 and get some time behind it.

    • @Blain5700
      @Blain5700 11 месяцев назад

      @@ActionShootingShow I can see places you might be able to use it, like a stage where you had a single target out at 700 yards, for example. But a stage with multiple targets at varying long ranges like we have here in TX, there's no time to adjust, or you forget. I think it's more important to have your scope setup in a way to ensure your head and eye placement are in the proper location and you have consistent form. That will be much faster and more accurate than dialing a knob under time.

    • @ActionShootingShow
      @ActionShootingShow 11 месяцев назад

      @Blain5700 agreed. Generally I set it at 100 if I'm pretty sure it's all close range targets, and if it could have extreme distance and I don't need to adjust I'll just set it to infinity. It's easy to set and forget. And even with parallax a consistent head and eye placement is always a good thing.

  • @heyhayhay247
    @heyhayhay247 11 месяцев назад

      Thank you for the insightful AAR and for your work as ROs. I was very grateful for the honor of participating. It allowed me to reconnect with the Legion community and honor our fallen (SSG Cody Prosser). I wish that I had actually been competitive but I realized quickly that at my age (64) and with my disabilities (VA 90%) just being able to start and finish was a reasonable success for me. Strength and Honor! RAB

      Thanks for sharing that! I thought about adding that into the videos but was afraid it was all too long and would clutter it up so I appreciate having it in the comments.
