Turning a Spalted Walnut Bowl for a Wonderful Couple
I turned a spalted walnut bowl for a kind and loving couple. One of them got to watch the first half of her bowl being turned. This one was tough as it was very punky. I used a LOT of shellac to hold things together as well as some CA glue. Luckily the tenon never broke off. In the end, we got an 11 1/2" fruit bowl. This is the first spalted walnut I've turned. The log lived on our "lawn" in the sprinklers for a good 6 months. It came out very beautiful!

The Largest Piece I've Turned So Far: 19.5" Walnut Charcuterie Board from a Cookie

My first turning on the Harvey T60. This is a 21" walnut cookie that had warped and cupped. It was VERY dry and a bear to turn. It beat me up pretty good as there were uneven chainsaw cuts that had to be turned out. I will be turning a matching dip bowl to go with the charcuterie board. It will be available via Etsy soon.

    You are not the first to complain about the paint job on this particular lathe, I know it’s just the paint job it just gripes your soul when you’ve got this 20 ton Bohemia setting in your shop and you really just wanna send it back but you know that’s not possible! Sorry I’m just rambling but what I did wanna say I could be wrong, but it looks to me as you have the old style to tool rest. I do know that is how they ship them at the beginning and then they upgrade it it’s even in their brochure That it has the Harden still rod so it won’t put dings in your cast-iron. They all Harvey boys they sure can make some sexy looking tools. I’m just glad to see the other side enjoying the view as well. Hey listen it’s a good machine. I have a few Harvey. No they’re not perfect. You’ll enjoy it. What really matters?

      @renaissancewoodworking 16 дней назад

      Thank you! Yea, I'm not too worried about the paint. It's a tool. I'm more sad about the scratches in the ways from a burr that was on the banjo. :( I just thought it was weird it chipped after one use. I don't even think the tool touched the paint. Maybe just from vibrations. Mine has the steel rod on top, so it shouldn't be touching the paint. 🤷🏻‍♀️ It is a great lathe so far. I wanted a Robust but can't justify that price. This was the best and closest to the Robust. I wanted a lathe that had weight to handle the bowls I want to turn. I was WAY bigger than i thought it would be! It was a chore getting it setup!

    It doesn't matter if a motor is a servo motor or not, it will not give you 4Hp if its rated 2 Hp. It being a servo motor only means that a servo controller (like a Variable Frequency Drive / VFD) controls the rotational position of the motor from some sort of feedback like a encoder. What they probably mean from saying a "servo motor like in a cnc machine" is that it is not a asynchronous induction motor but a permanent magnet synchronous motor which are generally a little smaller for the same power but need a VFD to run.

    • @renaissancewoodworking
      @renaissancewoodworking Месяц назад

    A trick I've used in the past with glued in fasteners is to use a soldering iron (a fairly juicy one that might trip the breaker if anything significant was turned on at the same time on the same circuit) and it works fantastically well for el cheapo factory fabrication on other devices, especially ones with a circuit board attached or those pig metal screws that act like single use fasteners. Thread locker, ehh, not so much other than thermal cycling the joint. I've drilled out my share of screws and bolts, too. 😁 I was looking at this kit recently, maybe thinking about doing the x axis first. I was also toying with the idea of just using the hardware and getting third party linear rails to make a BIG machine. Undecided as of yet.

  • @C-M-E
    @C-M-E Месяц назад

    If you happen to know, does it also operate like a VFD where control of a router's rpm will coordinate with settings in software? The automated on/off is nice but somewhat trivial compared to having coordination with rpm control, which is what I would buy it for.

  • @LeddingtonGuitars
    @LeddingtonGuitars 2 месяца назад

    I have just done this upgrade and i am not happy with the results. An intended straight cut across the x-axis does not yeild a straight cut but instead an arc with a deflection of about 1.5mm or 1/16" in the middle. I have perforemed many tests to solve this issue but to no avail. I believe this is due to the linear rails not being stiff enough to suport the weight of the carriage + router (makita) therfore causing it to sag inwards in the middle where it is lease supported. I have been intouch with Sainsmart about this and have requested a full refund. I recommend not doing this upgrade, and if you already have, check an x-axis cut on your machine is actually straight. If anyone wants more info or images / video to explain this further, shoot me a DM.

    • @renaissancewoodworking
      @renaissancewoodworking Месяц назад

      HMMM....Maybe that is my issue? I will take a look. I've been so busy, I haven't had time to figure out why it's cutting so deep. I figured it was my uneven lumber as I was using 2x4s.

    • @LeddingtonGuitars
      @LeddingtonGuitars Месяц назад

      @@renaissancewoodworking Sounds like you need to level the spoil board if you haven't already? My issue is with straightness of cut, not depth. i.e. if i tried to cut a rectangle of say 500x100mm, when cutting the 500mm lines across the x axis they come out arced, not straight.

    • @renaissancewoodworking

      Probably from being a mom. Hahaha! I had to stop and do other things many times making this flag. I do know that I didn't account for the 1/8" kerf from cutting the union from the stripes. I very well may have started with a 24.5" length and not longer to compensate for what I would have to cut off when I evened out the side. So, if you make one, make sure you start out w/ at least 25.5" stripes. ;)

LOL) Our son was given an IR for defending the flag when he was in 2nd grade. We fought that tooth and nail. Anyway, have an awesome day!

      As a teacher, I am so sorry to hear that! I teach 5th grade and understand how important our country's history is. I do my best to stick with the facts and help the kids understand what our foundation is. We do things like right the Pledge of Allegiance and the Preamble in their own words as well as write up a 1700's news paper on the constitution. Good for you at fighting back and standing up for your son!

      @@renaissancewoodworking Thank you from the bottom of my heart for keeping American History alive. So many schools have gotten away from that, which is sad. The reason he was defending it was that a boy kept spitting on it. Our son went and stood between the boy and the flag and told him, many people died for this flag, you don't spit on that. We have never been prouder. The principle at the school informed us that he kept the other boy from having "free speech". We were floored. Told her that maybe the news stations would be interested in her response. My husband is a disabled veteran (non-war) so we tend to be very patriotic.

      @@shannabauer You are very welcome! I have to wonder. Is it his free speech to spit on the class floor our on the sidewalk outside the class? Probably not. Therefore, he shouldn't be spitting on the flag either. Interesting he used "Free Speech" when it fit his needs.

    Wonder if this would facilitate running a small dado stack (like the CMT one in this video) on a SawStop CTS? (Aside from potential warranty invalidation issues, safety brake size / function concerns, etc. I probably just talked myself out of it.)

    • @renaissancewoodworking
      @renaissancewoodworking 3 месяца назад

      LOL! Probably a good choice! Hmmm...On a CTS? Can it even use a dado break? You can't run a dado without a dado brake. The arbor knows! Haha! That's why this is my second saw. My first was DOA as the arbor was not detecting the blade. Had to wait another week to get the saw replaced. I wouldn't try it.

    Just... no. First, it's only for SawStop. That eliminates 90% of table saw users. Second, you had plenty of arbor to use your regular washer. Unless you build your stack to a full 3/4" it's pretty pointless. Third, dado stacks have been used for decades without a $45 nut. That makes it doubly pointless. Like most of Woodpecker's stuff it's an over priced and unnecessary gadget.

    • @renaissancewoodworking
      @renaissancewoodworking 3 месяца назад

      Case in point. No, not at all necessary and I stated that. The video was not to convince someone to get one, but to show what it is so others can make that financial decision on their own. What other's do with their money is none of my business. Yes, it's just for the SawStop. So, it's not ok to make things or review single use objects? Lastly, I didn't take the time to put on a full dado stack as I know the viewers are pretty smart and can understand the difference between a 1/4" dado stack and a 3/4".

      @@renaissancewoodworking Of course you're entitled to buy whatever you like. Likewise, you can make any video you like. The criticism isn't directed at you, but at Woodpecker's. Charging $45 for a nut, washer, and snap ring is absurd. Especially since it's completely unnecessary. The original washer works fine unless the dado is expanded to 3/4" and dados work fine without any washer at all. Who at Woodpecker's thought this was a good idea for anything but making money?

      @@ST-0311 I totally agree. I think it was a good idea to solve something that make people nervous. I agree the price, as with most of their stuff, is way too high. This and the small drill press fence I got for $60 is all I have of their's and all I will probably ever have. But, Capitalism. They won't sell many if people are not willing to pay it. Then, it will be a one off thing and you will see people try and sell them on Amazon and Ebay for $100 as "rare". LOL

      Thank you! My kiddos really like helping when they can. ;) The old rustic flag was made from our old fence boards from a section of fence we had to take down. Time was the only finish! I love burning the wood to give color and texture!
