Listening Fatigue Day 6- Memorization and study skills
Просмотров 224 года назад
How can we improve our memorization and study skills? Using Mnemonics (short phrases that stand for certain facts) can help us remember certain details. You can also use your five senses, especially smell and taste to help you remember what you learned. Pop in a breath mint while studying and then put it in your mouth right before an exam. The flavor will trigger the memory of you studying (and...
DAY 5 Overcoming Listening Fatigue: Increasing Focus Part 2: Doodling
Просмотров 234 года назад
When we experience listening fatigue, our brain starts to wander. Doodling helps us increase our focus. Though we might have though of Doodling as a bad thing, studies show it actually increases our rate of memorization of verbal and auditory information. Another strategy to increase focus is handwriting notes instead of typing. Handwriting is typically slower which forces us to process what we...

Listening Fatigue Day 4-Increasing Focus Part 1
Просмотров 304 года назад
How can we help our brain focus? Being able to focus is a big part of overcoming listening fatigue. Our diet and lifestyle habits can either increase focus or destroy our focus. Our meals should be a mix of protein, healthy fats and slow-burning carbs. Sugary foods will cause our blood sugar to spike and then crash, making us fatigued. Aim for slow-burning (high fiber) carbs, healthy fats and p...
Day 3 Overcoming Listening Fatigue- Creating A Sense of Calm
Просмотров 264 года назад
Listening fatigue is often accompanied by anxiety. Activating our parasympathetic nervous system and our vagus nerve can help calm us down and enable us to focus better. The vagus nerve helps activate the parasympathetic nervous system and increasing vagal tone in the vagus nerve can help us restore our body to a state of calm. Deep breathing is a simple way to do that. Breathe in through the n...

Understanding Listening Fatigue Day 1
Просмотров 1084 года назад
What is listening fatigue? Listening fatigue is mental exhaustion that we experience due to having to listen for extended periods of time. It is more pronounced in those who have hearing loss, especially when we are listening to someone talking, because we can't understand everything that is being said and our brains need to fill in the blanks on the words or sounds we missed. In a peer reviewe...
The Lesson of the Straw
Просмотров 214 года назад
I went out to eat today at a takeout restaurant. When I opened the paper covering over my straw, I found that one side hadn't been cut. It was still whole but because it hadn't been cut, it couldn't fulfill its purpose. I couldn't drink out of it. Even when I tried to tear off the end, I was unable to because it was plastic. I ended up having to take the lid off my lemonade and drinking it that...

Learning styles and a child's zone of genius
Просмотров 114 года назад
'Every child is a genius.' We tend to judge children by standard measures of intelligence. But all children have different abilities and attributes. Some children are gifted in math or reading. Other children are musical. Or they may be athletic. It is important to understand what children are gifted in and what their learning styles are. When children have listening fatigue, they also have gre...
'Every Child Is A Genuis'

I've been thinking about Einstein's quote, "Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its entire life believing it is stupid." (And yes, I know I got the quote wrong in the video! I think I was distracted by the clap of thunder I heard just as I was saying the quote). I struggled a great deal in school due to my hearing loss and listening fatigu...
Background noise and listening fatigue
Просмотров 534 года назад
Background noise can be difficult for anyone but it can be especially hard if you have hearing loss. Most people with hearing loss cannot 'tune out' background noise when trying to focus on a particular sound and can become distracted by other noise. This can lead to listening fatigue, mental exhaustion that occurs when having to listen for long periods of time or having to intently concentrate...

The Deaf and Hard of Hearing community face significant discrimination when it comes to employment. I told a cashier in a store that I was hard of hearing ,indicating that I needed her to speak up. She continued to talk to me in a quiet voice that almost resembled a whisper to me. People are inconsiderate. That’s just one example. Hard of hearing people like me are often ignored , laughed at , ridiculed , not included in conversation , verbally abused , etc. People often get mad at me because I can’t hear good and they refuse to try to understand. I get talked to in condescending ways often just because I’m hard of hearing.

That is not the sign for HOW, at least not in American Sign Language that’s closer to the sign for WHEN. HOW would be using both hands front knuckles touching in the relaxed A hand shape and your dominant hand rotates forward away from you
