Ukulele Anatomy: What are the parts of my uke?
I usually strum with my index finger, as you demonstrate. However, for some reason, the nail on my index finger taps against the edge of the fretboard, making an audible tick sound. Any hints as to how to reduce/prevent this?
Thanks so much for asking! That’s a common issue actually, I’ve seen many high level ukulele players do that here and there during performances and even recordings! I used to hit the fingerboard so much on this ukulele that the edge is rounded now from wear haha. So I think it all comes down to a matter of control which you develop through repitition. With more practice you’ll have that issue less but every now and again I’m sure you’ll still whack your finger like we all do sometimes haha. One other thing to note is that the height of your strings and thickness of your fingerboard make a difference too- I make the fingerboards on the new ukulele I build thinner and it happens a lot less than it used to for me. And if you’re string action is ultra low you’re more likely to hit the fingerboard/body too. All the best and good luck!
@@CTrietschUkulelesWow, thanks for the quick reply. Glad to hear I'm not the only one with this problem. I had a feeling you were going to say "practice." Actually I re-watched your video, especially where the camera angle was looking straight up the fretboard. To my eye, it looked like tip of your index finger was moving in a fairly tight arc, so the tip of your finger was approaching the G string from an angle, instead of straight across the strings, which would make contact with the fretboard less likely. I think that your wrist rotation was generating that arc. Of course, that might not help in other strumming contexts, when the hand moves vertically further. Thanks again. Your ukuleles are beautiful. Someday I may be worthy of an instrument of that quality.
@@MikeWach you are worthy! I'd be honored to build you an ukulele and thank you for your compliments too. So what you're talking about with the wrist rotating is right on the money, I actually made a whole video on strumming wrist movement that might help you too! ruclips.net/video/KKo0qImhbyQ/видео.htmlsi=ytDNnhXj0gHnR25S - I've heard a lot of pro players teach others by saying that you strum straight across the strings but I don't think that's right at all! The finger tip moves in an arc from your wrist rotating like you said, but also your wrist's ulnar/radial deviation and your finger's flexion and extension. It's multiple planes of motion across multiple joints but incorporating all of that gives you better control over your strum speed, control, and accuracy. Something else I just thought of too that might help you is to make sure that your strumming finger isn't too rigid: it should be stiff enough to flex and release each string but also pliable and give way a little as it hits each string. Then for harder strums it can be marginally stiffer and for softer strums a little more relaxed and so on. Happy to discuss these finer points with you, good talk and thanks again for commenting!
Nice one man. I’ve only recently gotten an amp,I’ve been playing ukulele for four years now. And I’ve been doing some Open mics, but I’ve been unplugged and I’ve not even thought of pedals. So after watching this video I’m Going to get some pedals And make up a board
Thanks! They sure are fun to play with and can add a lot to a performance! Also you'll be the coolest cat on the scene 😎 Best of luck and enjoy!
Very sweet bass. Excellent work.
Thanks so much! I appreciate you checking it out!!
This is so cool!!!
Thanks so much!
This is a most wonderfully informative video - thank you! I'm partial to a typical rock sound and love your use of distortion (Blues Driver). This was my introduction to a Loop pedal, and it is fascinating!! I have just purchased a Flight Centurion, tenor, solid body, electric ukulele with humbucking pickups. It has no battery-powered preamp. Might you be able to tell me if I would need the EQ effect pedal, to add power please? Or would I be OK plugging straight into distortion, wah-wah and volume pedals as is please? Thank you so much for bringing this to us. You are very clear and concise in your teaching. Best wishes. (Liked and Subscribed)
Thanks so much for your support and kind words! Glad the video is helpful to you - i plan on making more pedal sample videos in the future! So humbuckers are inherently stronger pickups and in addition to that your ukulele has two humbuckers so you probably won’t need a preamp to boost your signal into those other pedals. Have fun! That sounds like a great setup!
@@CTrietschUkuleles Oh wow!! I can't thank you enough for your kind reply! Your taking the time to respond is appreciated beyond words - thank you so much. I'm so looking forward to exploring all of your other videos and would welcome anything and everything you might make in the future. As a retired elementary school teacher, I want to say you are one EXCELLENT teacher. There is a massive range in style and quality when it comes to instructional things on RUclips. catch me playing this on repeat for daysss
I already have! Haha, you’re the best 🥰
Beautiful.
Many thanks!
Man I’ve had the worse luck with the TC pedal I have. It’s a reverb pedal, not the one you have, and it just adds so much noise to the chain that I basically can’t use it. Do you ever use flange and chorus at the same time? I have the old fashioned phase and chorus as separate pedals, and never can figure out if I wanna phase my chorus, or chorus my phase.
Oh jeez, yea sounds like your reverb pedal is an issue, I’m sorry thats happening to you! So a flange pedal is the combination of chorus and phase already so you generally don’t need to use a chorus pedal at the same time as flange because you can just adjust the chorus knob on the flange pedal. But having a seperate chorus and phase shifter on at the same time gives you the flange effect like you’re saying! The pedal order changes the sound but neither way is “correct” just different flavors - try experimenting both ways with different settings until you can dial in the sound you’re looking for! Best of luck!
Very helpful. Thx
Glad it helped, thanks for watching!
Could U suggest me the best amp for ukulele?!?
Thanks for asking! It all depends on the sound, features, and size your looking for but I would start by looking for acoustic amps! Best of luck to you!

Thank you.. great teaching.. and not too much at a time!!
Yay, so happy to hear that its helpful for you!! Thanks!
My finger just falling inside, nd can't play 4 at a single stroke
Im sorry to hear you’re having trouble! If this strum isn’t working out for you right now, maybe you can try strumming down all 4 strings with the side of your thumb, and then try coming back to the index finger in a little while when you’re ready. Best of luck!!!
Thanks for the useful video! I have Boss RC-5 loop and it looks the output of my uke is too low to feed it (and the output reaching my amp is weak enough). Does it mean I really have to get preamp between my uke and the pedal? Like that Fishman Pro EQ. Or perhaps Boss AD-2 or Joyo AD-2, if you have any comments on those?
It sounds like an outboard preamp is exactly what you need! I only have experience with the fishman pro EQ II - have had mine for over 10 years now and although its not glamorous, its done its job on stage and in recording studios, both by itself and on my pedal board so I’ve never really needed to try anything else! I’m sure the others you mentioned would work well too though, best of luck!

@@TraceBravo Thank you! I look forward to talking with you more!
It’s amazing how many different recommendations there are !
Definitely! Thanks for watching 😁
When you say longer and shorter, how do you do that to the saddle? Do you mean physically moving the saddle?
Yes! Its a combination of physically moving the saddle and then shaping the top of the saddle so that each string breaks over it at the correct distance from the nut. The saddle location impacts the bridge location which impacts the soundboard braces’ placement so these measurements need to be taken early and planned for throughout the entire build process! Thanks for asking 😁
Super cool & handy jigs. Thanks for that tip!
Thanks! If you make one send me pics! I’d love to see, all the best
Nice overview! ❤
Thanks! And thank you for watching!
You are playing with your health, dude. Why do you think this product comes in really tiny bottles? With that huge area you are working at the same time the immense amount of fumes will damage your eyes and lungs.
Noted in the video! A respirator, goggles, and proper ventilation is a must. Thanks!
@@CTrietschUkuleles I used respirators and still managed to become sensitised to superglue. Now if I use it even briefly I get bad hay-fever like symptoms for 3-4 days afterwards.
@@ColinWatters that’s terrible, sorry to hear! If you need recommendations for other pore fillers let me know - there are lots of options!
@@CTrietschUkuleles No worries. I was only using it to speed up building RC model aircraft, not as a large area pore filler, so can avoid it. Im fine with epoxy. Now if I really have to use superglue for something I have to do it outdoors so the wind blows away any fumes or suffer.
@@ColinWatters That's good to hear! I do the same when I have to use superglue - outdoors is best. I heard that people can become sensitized to epoxy too though! crazy
Great info, thanks
Glad it was helpful, thanks for watching!
Very clear walkthrough - thank you very much indeed!
Thanks so much! Glad you think so, hope it helps!
@@CTrietschUkuleles Certainly does!
Great! 😁
I tried laquer clear coat over super glue and it did not work well at all. I think just a superglue finish would have good sound though as it gets super hard. Was thinking if there was a way to spary it on would be great, but don't know? It does not sand well at all?
Sorry to hear you are having trouble! Super glue isnt going to get smooth or glossy and you won’t be able to buff it up like you would a finish. I’d also be concerned spraying it with how toxic it is - wouldnt want airborne superglue particles floating around. There are lots of different finishes though if spraying lacquer is giving you a problem, maybe a brush on or wipe on finish that sands well, looks good, and dries hard would be better! Best of luck!
Investigate a wet sanding technique…thin your true oil and sand in the wet slurry…when it dries …sand minimally repeat until it looks like an automobile finish.
@@patrickjoseph5028good tips! Micromesh and Bufflex papers work great too
@@CTrietschUkuleles This is poor information, CA glue can polish up to a higher gloss than any "poly" type finish. I use it for grainfilling, which is fantastic, but once filled and level sanded, many more coats can be applied until thick enough to flatten and polish.
@@peterjones3100 that’s great that you have had that experience, good for you! That hasn’t been my experience and that is fine too
Nice work, beautiful instrument. What kind of stain-varnish did you apply on?
Thanks! This was a coat of amber shellac to seal the wood and add a little color 😁
do you sand it down, or thats it?
I sand in between coats of superglue and after the last coat of superglue. I also sand between finish coats with this finish - lots of sanding!
Probably more helpful to an experienced Ukulele player unfortunately I am a beginner and don’t even know how to play a ukulele. Oh well.
Thanks for watching and congratulations on beginning your ukulele journey! Actually, I think several of these tips can be helpful even if you don't know how to play yet - especially trusting your first impression on how the ukulele feels in your hands and how it sounds just playing the open strings. Playing all the strings together and one at a time helps too. Best of luck picking out your ukulele!
Thanks very helpful, any tips for ukes you buy online when you can't hold it and try them?
Glad it was helpful! The best thing to do when buying online is to compare reviews and listen to different people sampling/reviewing the ukulele. Ukulelesite is a great music store where professional players demo much of their stock for online shoppers, and Gotaukulele is another great source of objective reviews. I do the same with my handmade ukuleles I have available so people can see how they handle, sound, and feel through my sampling of it. Thanks so much!
The sound is very quiet, and badly desynced. You should turn the volume up and reupload.
Sorry you are having trouble enjoying the video! I did record this video outside which unfortunately does not provide the best audio quality. The play back on my devices seem to be synced and loud enough though, I hope you can find a way to still use this tutorial! All the best!
@@CTrietschUkuleles I'm not sure why I was having trouble then, but it's synced fine now.
Glad to hear its all better on your end too! Thanks and enjoy!
Check the action of the strings
String action does make a big difference in playability - its also highly adjustable and subjective so important to note what needs to be addressed with a proper set up while sampling ukulele
