Here's the letter I got from Heckel back in the 90s regarding the first Contra I ever played on (serial number 175): westerling.com/?p=1125
We finally have our first chance to dig deep into the details about a Heckel contrabassoon thanks to Forrests Music in Berkeley, Ca, USA. How does it compare to other manufacturers like Amati, Fox, and Mollenhauer? So many interesting things about this instrument! Too many to cram into a single video. We'll get a good chance to hear a "Low A" in a future video.

    Mollenhauer has a delicate contrabassoon sound. They are very soft to play. I've played Moosman Contra and they have more power. Mollenhauer are much softer, but less powerful.

    Lovely! I really like the sound. If possible to try one out, can you do a comparison with the contrabsn by Thore. It’s said that that they are Amati stencils, so basically the same. But maybe like Howarth, having their own specifications? Also, what are you using for electronic sheet music? It’s not a Gvido I guess, nor an iPad on it’s side.

    I wanna know what the key below what I assume is the c# key does. I'm also curious about what fingering you have to use to make Eb3,E3, and F3 sound good

    • @ProducerJ
      @ProducerJ Год назад

      Great question Frith2010! Those notes can be quite stuffy. Admittedly its been several years since I played the Moosmann, so I'm sorry I don't remember what fingerings I settled on. Let's explore some options: have you tried playing these notes while holding open the thumb C# key with your right hand?

    • @Frith2010
      @Frith2010 Год назад

      @@ProducerJ I am borrowing a school's puchner contra. There is a little, albeit looks like an afterthought, key that lets me hit the c# key and upper vent at the same time. I've tried many fingering charts and many fingerings. Ultimately the fingering that I thought was best for F3 was 1,3,resonance, 1,2 and upper vent, sometimes add pancake key to lower pitch. That fingering is just like the high f for bassoon but obviously adding the upper vent key. This fingering sometimes works really well and at times not at all and I have no explanation as to why. So for F3 now my go to is 2,3, 1,2,Bb, with upper vent key. For E3 1 and upper vent seem to work well enough but I also like the tone of 1,3, resonance, 1,2,3, upper vent. For Eb3 nothing really works to be actually playable in tune so I just add the Eb key to D and call it a day. I tried as you suggested adding the C# key but it just makes all the notes really sharp.

    My contra is easy to play but difficult to master. I find the low pedal tones are easier than high notes, but you play them with ease. I admire that. I have an Amati contra and my bassoon looks like an infant compared to my big baby.

  • @GaryGP40
    @GaryGP40 Год назад

    I Love my Amati. I don't recall it clacks like yours, but it could be that it does. Do you find when you play it is not as obvious? I need to take mine out and try something like this. I have played more Rimsky-Korsakov, and more modern pieces on my contra, the classical repertoire, while wonderful, is limited to the contra often doubling the bassoon or cellos an octave below. Nice video. Have to try the cork idea on the upper thumb rest! Thanks for sharing your contra!

    My brother owned a Mollenhauer contrabassoon when he was still in high school in the Detroit area. 1970-71. Very same vintage as the one in this video. Serial #532. He studied with the contra player in the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and unfortunately went to study with Hugh Cooper in Ann Arbor. My brother dropped out of school and never played bassoon again. I remember we sold the contra for $2600 to a member of the Seattle Symphony?

    This video posits an interesting concept, but couldn’t one find it tiring to switch back and forth like that over a lengthened period of time?

    • @ProducerJ
      @ProducerJ Год назад

      Good question. In reality, you only switch "on" the low A mode on for passages where it's needed. Usually this relates to the music being in a specific key for that section. For example in Mahler 5, I have to switch to "low a" mode four times during the piece. So its not super involved. I write the best time to switch back and for in my music and pivot the extension into/outof low A mode at that moment.

    • @ProducerJ

      Depends on the symphony, but its true sometime you need to go chromatically. In that case you'll need to literally add another key to the keywork on the bass joint. However, normally when playing the low A, you're in a key which doesn't use A#/Bb so this modification works well. Thanks for watching!

Everyone seems to just hate Amati but I wanted an actual professional opinion. The instrument worked for me but like I said, it's the only contrabassoon I've ever played so I don't know how it holds up against some of the more "Prestigious" names. The reason I'm asking is because I want to buy a contrabassoon and if an instrument that is 20-30k cheaper does just as well, then financially it's a better choice.

      Ahvenjärvi & Lappalainen It just makes it easier for the player to slide their fingers from one key to the next.

    I just fine the term "horn" odd, what is wrong with instrument?

      It's just musician parlance. We also say "Axe" to refer to our instrument, so go figure :-)

    I'd love to see an Amati demo.

      That's what I want to hear! Let's hear a contrabassoon most people can actually afford.

      Thanks for this request. You are not the first person to mention this. I'd love to review an Amati - but preferably one of the new instruments since I understand they have made several improvements recently. I've reached out to them, and encourage you to do the same. According to their site the email of the US rep is amati_strunal@msn.com. Please drop them a note encouraging them to contact me for a profile vid. If not, I'll use an older horn at one of the colleges nearby. Thanks!

    I play bassoon and I want to learn contra. Is it hard to play?

      Its harder to find one then it is to play one. Just start playing and you'll figure it out. The lowest octaves are very similar to the bassoon.
