Furniture Restoration - Restoring a Drexel Newport Collection Vanity
Excellent video! I’ve been looking into doing this for some furniture and your video was most helpful. Thanks!
It’s a mess but it does work!
I thought you were Vancouver carpentry for like 5 the first 5 minutes
I want to restore my daughters and add a lighted mirror. What would you recommend?
A lighted mirror that would typically be mounted on a wall would probably work. If you search for lighted vanity mirror I would pick one that looks like it’s made to sit on the vanity, and attach some boards that span at least half the height of the mirror to the base of the vanity and let the mirror rest against the boards. Or you could always just mount it to the wall above the vanity.
Saveyour self some time cleaning it get thinner and a rag and whipe the oils off if your gonna sand it anyway it really don't matter.
As long as it looks like glass, you did a good job 👏 if it looks like an orange peel, then you need more practice. it looks great to me. Keep doing what works for you 👍🏼
Use a tack cloths
Try using the blue bondo or grey to try keeping the color in the same family
Love the colour of the paint and the hardware but dont like the wallpaper.
Yes, something botanical would have been nice.
It would be better for your lungs if you wore a respirator.
Thanks for taking the time to make this video. I have the Vevor and it's similar to the Harbor Freight. If you are going to upgrade, it's probably worth stepping up to a Crest (or even a Branson). Those are the real deal.
Never heard of that brand, but I’ll definitely look into it. I haven’t used mine much anymore.
I don’t know how anyone can afford to have that much work done on a piece of furniture and I don’t know how you can afford to do as much as you did to it. Other than that I think you should be very proud of your work.
Krud kutter or ammonia and water makes it sticky and breaks it down even after months of cure time
Yeah. I agree it’s got its problems. I’m really just comparing to it cabinet paints.. I think it’s about perspective. Gallery gets none of the air bubble issues that I have with other PUs and is way more user friendly in my experience. It’s definitely more of a paint but just my experience.
What grain sandpaper were you using at the beginning?
To strip the finish probably 180 or 120
Thanks! Looks great.
Thank you!
How do you mix the color, do you put mineral spirits or different things. What were the measures Thank you Beautiful job
I just thinned it by eye. 10-20 with fine paints of Europe mineral spirits.
adam i have really appreciate all of the content you are putting out! i am working on a thomasville faux bamboo dresser that I want to do in high gloss. following ur example i attempted to get centurion vinyl sealer tinted to my color.. unfortunately they were unwilling to attempt to tint it so I went with the Centurion 1111 urethane primer high build. it is tented to my final color. I’m planning on adding 5 percent catalyst to it. instead of using a tinted top coat i want to go with a clear. My question to you is should I use a one or 2K lacquer or something else with the high build urethane primer any advice you can give me would be much appreciated.ps. i have sanded completely flat.
Centurions high build is a water based product. It can be topcoated with a lacquer after waiting at least 24 hours. If you have access to centurion water based gloss coatings I’m sure you can try that, but I just used whatever brand precat clear gloss (85+ sheen) that is available to me. Usually it’s Gemini or axalta or sometimes Mohawk. If you didn’t have issues spraying centurion which is a difficult product to spray then you should not have issues spraying a water based gloss if you want to go that route. Water based coatings will not be as glossy as a lacquer or oil based clear in my experience. You can still topcoat with a gloss lacquer if you want to.
What spray equipment do you have

Thank you so much!!! I hope you enjoyed the video
Great job as always. I like that you put so much time and care into it
Thank you!
Getting started with a channel is kind of demanding, but once you get some kind of rhythm, it should be good. I like watching you work. You have good things to show us subscribers and interesting ideas on how to rescue items like this table from the trash. I love the way it turned out.
Thank you!
As always, another wonderful video!!
Thank you my friend! Best of luck to you
Thank you. The company that sold the kit to keep it clean went out of business.
Glad I could help
hi Milo I bought a cherrywood bedroom set in 2006 in at the time I bought a polish and cleaner for it, that company has since gone out of business and because cherry wood is delicate can you tell me what Product I can use to clean and polish it.
I’m not honestly a big fan of polish. The reason being, any future refinishing that has to be done will only be made harder because waxes in polish interfere with the coatings I use. There’s a couple products out there, the company Milsek manufactures a wax free polish. I’d think anything that is wax free and silicone free is okay! That’s really the only important thing to me. Others might have different opinions. Some people do like wax because it helps to act as a polishing compound, but to me I just avoid it in case I want to refinish a piece later.
Went back to watch the previous videos, and wondered when would the new ones be published - here it is ❤❤❤
I promise they are coming! I had a situation with my day job busier than normal, hopefully soon!
That is GORGEOUS
Thank you sir!
the end results look good. I do cabinets and painting for a living. We prefer BIN Shellac as a primer on woods to block tannins over cover stain. I would suggest in the future trying a smaller needle on the primer and paint, lowering the pressure a bit and narrowing the width down a lot. looks like youre spraying way too wide and heavy with that paint, on camera it looks like 8-10 inches wide on a 2 inch wide pieces of wood. A lot of splatter as well which may be due to too high of a pressure, or too much thinning. FPoE doesn't need thinning. Not much you could have done with the dust as you addressed in the video unless you get a dust extractor. With high gloss everything shows, it's hard work. Perhaps wood filling the mitered corners to remove seeing that in the future. Otherwise great results for someone trying that out for the first time.
Any update on what happened to your sprayer?
Nope never came back from warranty been months
What grit did you use?
For which part? For primer 180-220 Between topcoats 300-600
Love the rich dark color. Perfect choice. Beautiful outcome. I checked the prices for the soda blasters. Won't be getting one any time soon! Lol
Not sure which ones you’re looking at? They can be purchased for as little as 75$. Some are very expensive.
would you paint a car with wood paint? no because it won't last. car paint is make for metal, metal doesn't breath wood does. I would think over time the paint will crack due to the wood movement. your thoughts ?
That is not necessarily correct. Lacquer was used on cars for years, and though it was a slightly modified formula it was basically the same thing as wood lacquer. Same thing with modern car paint it’s a 2k which has been more or less copied into use with furniture
Was it solvent or water based automotive paint?
Bingo what’s up! Solvent nason fulthane 2k urethane. It was a fun experience and I like that I can buff it after 24 hours but it’s hard the dust is still huge problem for me. Ideally id like to not have to cut and buff but I had to on this one, I enclosed my booth didn’t know if you noticed that in the video
Hey! I’ve always wondered how car paint would perform on cabinets and furniture. Everyone seems to bash the idea but personally with these new 2k products targeted for wood it doesn’t seem like a bad idea to try the car paint especially if it’s cheaper! It seems like the solvent based 2k polys are a lot easier to work with than the water based bc the water is dependent on the climate. The hardest part with solvent like you said is the dust since it dries so fast unless you got a dedicated spray booth sucking all the air out that dry dust will land back in the finish and that makes for a fun day to cut and buff it out. Great video as always and awesome finish. I tried that with lacquer and it didn’t come out as great but then again I started with 600grit and then jumped to 1000 then cut/buff still didn’t remove the micro scratches. Gotta start with at least 2000 and can’t using anything that randomly orbits it just needs to spin.
Yeah man DA sander no orbit all the way the scratches will look like French polish. What lacquer? If you’re taking about the lacquer I’ve used in my videos I never polished after the fact because of that. My final coat was always just good and had to make it perfect. Buffing car paint is a heck of a lot easier than lacquer.that’s not a problem unique to you it’s just that most RUclipsrs including me you can’t see that close up but if you did I’m sure it would look just like yours. I’ll tell you though lol But when it comes to satin I really don’t care you know. Getting that 90+ sheen gloss is the only reason I try a lot of different products. Using auto paint is not necessarily new it’s just that I do a ton of research lol and i try to find out what works on a forum and bring it to RUclips. Just trying to do something different. It’s not really gonna be cheaper unless you’re comparing it to something like gallery. No reason it should be that expensive to buy a product like centurion (which is actually economical) but some of the Italian 2ks are insane and I won’t even consider buying something that unrealistic to me.
@bingobunga8995 I never want anyone to be misled by my videos though. There’s some polishing scratches and maybe a few pigtails in there but you’ll never see them. And I’ve kind of set a rule for myself which is that if it looks good in natural light it’s okay. Sometimes good enough for my customers is good enough for me.
@@milosrestoration1337 I’ve used high gloss Sherwood nitro lacquer and wasn’t impressed at all. No matter how much I thinned it I would spray it and goes on like glass then wrinkles up into orange peel as it dries and cures. Very disappointed with the product but it definitely sanded and buffed well I just didn’t have the right equipment to do it properly. The white vinyl sealer I’ve used in the past and the CAB acrylic lacquer from Sherwood were much better products. Nitro lacquer is very outdated idk why my local Sherwin Williams stores still carry it and not the better stuff. I’m moving over to 2k polys now even if isocyanates are the new hazard to contend with. I’ve been experimenting with gallery series as well adding a crosslinker which is safer than isocyanate catalysts it uses benign aziridine as the hardener. I found out Gallery was a spin-off of Sayerlack’s Hydroplus and is actually compatible with the crosslinker from Caldwell Painting. It actually outperformed 2k Renner against acetone in his test which was very impressive. The adhesion test was less desirable but I’d wager the primer he used was the limiting factor.
Really gorgeous work!
Thank you very much!
Super hard paint to spray but outcomes are amazing. How much did you thin it down?
30-40%

Hi, Andy from Chile 🇨🇱. Do you buy tinted lacquer? Or you mix the color yourself? Do you ever work with water-based products? And why is it Milo’s restorations? Love your content ❤❤
I have a dog named Milo! Thank you, I don’t tint the lacquer myself I use pre tinted lacquer and sealer.
@@milosrestoration1337 I have a dog named mylo too!!
Beautifully done. I ❤ the color!! Thank you for sharing.
Thank you very much!
Beautiful color!
Thank you!
Hope we get to see it done with the hardware I think this is gorgeous!
I haven’t seen it with the hardware yet! I will change the thumbnail when I do.
308 tip did you think that was best for this paint?
Yeah I don’t think I would go any smaller. Also a 308 allows sometimes more than one pass if needed.
As far as caulking these type of cabinet doors, I do it on every job. I am much better off with my customers for it and the luxe are fantastic compared to the black edge if you didn’t caulk them.
Propane are here for last seven years. Good preparation I like how you use to Sanders to speed up your process. I also use Hans standing on every panel. You finish pretty much the way I do.
I noticed it's thin too. I do have a favorite but it's melange paint
Great job! I’ve been getting tired of the red bondo glazing putty lately. It shrinks too much. Two part bondo is better. This guy who runs a collision repair center told me to try UPOL Dolphin Glazing Putty instead. Dries super fast and hard and it will not shrink and sands to a powder. Honestly I’ve given up on scuffing with 220grit it takes too long and I don’t think it gives the surface enough bite for the paint to adhere to. I’ve been using 120, 150 and 180 grit. Even after the first coat of primer I’m still using 180 grit for my topcoats. If you’re concerned about the lacquer drying too fast just add more lacquer thinner! Or better yet some acetone and MEK. 90% MEK and 10% acetone for the thinner mix. It helps put on a heavier coat of lacquer without getting runs. I can’t stand the dry time for oil based products. Dust is a massive problem and I need speed cause time is money!
Agreed! It was more of a just for fun and RUclips thing. I tried a two part glazing but it was too hard to sand, maybe I’ll give the UPOL a shot
As always, a beautiful project. Are you going to participate in any of the RUclips furniture flipping challenges?
Thank you! Probably so. Once I am more caught up at my day job I hope to!
I like the color, too. But I think a color like this needs to be ultra glossy. Nice!
It does! It’s more of an accent color.
I like the color but it’s to glossy for my liking
Thank you! Im kind of trying to do some instructional videos, and a fine paints of Europe video seemed like a popular product.
