Birdy was well aware from the start that he's fucked up with JiaHan because he fell for him, only that, he chose to not entertain it even when JiaHan already screamed his love for him. Birdy has been scared for the both of them, and knew too well they're doomed and gonna get "killed" if they ever openly show it to the world. They're love was at the wrong timeline as well as the others going through it at the time. Their love was doomed to fail and Birdy couldn't afford to risk a chance for a more peaceful and acceptable life at the time for JiaHan. He tried so hard, and suffered too. I couldn't blame him for not fighting--it's a war they were bound to lose afterall. The time wasn't on their side. These actually brings me back to how I've felt in Brokeback Mountain--the tragedy of "forbidden" love. We could only hear the stories and watch, with nothing to do about it but feel sorry for them.

I've never cried about a same-gender love story after Brokeback Mountain until this one came. The pain backfires each time. It's not just a real story but a series of real life events that occur in the old times presented to us. We could only watch and feel sorry for them. There's this BTS where even the actors were shown to kept on crying even after the director shouted "cut"--the characters were too real to them and understood how it was to the real people it represented in that period.

Finishing the movie was so bittersweet because there are still Jia Hans and Birdys even in todays day and age. I will watch this movie on repeat until queer people everywhere are given the freedom to show their love proudly. Thank you for this beautiful edit :')
